Wanna race slot cars? This is the place to do it. In this Hobby Shop Tour episode, we check out Fast Track Hobbies in Rocklin, CA. In addition to their 3 indoor tracks, they have a whole ton of other hobbies available. You are likely to find what you want and need right there on the shelves. We also catch up with award winning scale builder Elio Deanda (from Axialfest in 2019!) who shows us his latest build and invites you all to his next event Scale Challenge West. So awesome to chat with staff member and fellow RC Girl Allison about her role in the shop after 3 years there.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the video! It has been a ton of fun learning about so many different facets of the radio control hobby and hearing stories of how people got involved.

  • I miss slot cars. I used to do them at a track off 1960 in Houston in the 80s and 90s as a kid. These things are a real shame that they have died off, because honestly it should make a comeback. I guess the home tracks maybe hurt the desire to have these, but nothing replaces the real thing.

    • On a cross-country family trip in '67 my older brother slot raced his way from CA to Boston, via Montreal, and back. Pitting his scratch-built-frame cars against locals at any track he could find. He was so jazzed about the new (at that time) body tech: clear plastic paint-on-the-inside bodies. Nice to see the hobby is enduring still.

  • Back in the middle and late 60’s those tracks were amazing. There were magazines and suppliers. It was huge. As a little kid we went with older brother and would sit at the hard turns where people would run off. You would pop up and put somebody back in the groove. They would say I’m on green or whatever. If they were a jerk you would put the car in nose first and pull it backwards a few inches. That would make the woven pickups to come loose and fail sooner. 😂 The nice guys would give you a quarter top.

Met so many cool people. My arms are still cut up from all the times I volunteered to marshal during races for free time. It was scary in group15 races with wings coming at your arms when reaching into an underpass to pull out a flipped car. I ended up using duct tape on my arms eventually. lol

Jesse Kensinger, Bruce Huntley, Bob and Brenda Herrick (owners of DRS), Frank Reedy and a few others all helped me. Most of these were world record holders and I will never forget them.

When we weren’t out moving sprinkler pipe, farming or feeding livestock (summertime spare time) we would get high and race cars. It was awesome but, I wish we had something like this. After retiring from the military I moved back to Idaho and we don’t even have a decent hobby store here. Hobby Lobby is crap! This place on here would blow my mind and I would finally be able to buy some Nitro for my 1/8 scale buggy and 1/8 scale truggy. Looks fun as hell there! 🤙🤙🤙

It's a little out of my way to go as I'm off Bradshaw and Hwy 50 but I take every advantage to going and attending all the events Dwight puts on. Something most Hobby Shops don't do to give back to the community. The workers there are always so helpful and knowledgeable passionate about what they do. I grew up in Highland Park Calif, by Glendale in the 60s ~ 70s and they had hall with 4 massive slot-car tracks. Though I was young I held a good paying job cleaning 10 pool tables at the local pool hall every morning before going to school. So I had plenty of money to spend the whole day on the weekends racing my slot cars. Later they opened a slot car place by Burbank Airport ran by a very nice elderly couple.
