Braces Explained: Wires Pt.1 (NiTi Shape Memory)
In this little minis series, I want to highlight some of the wires that you may hear your orthodontist using. The first one is probably the most popular word you hear, and that is “NiTi” wire. NiTi stands for nickel titanium and it is an annoy of metals that have shape memory!
They are used for the beginning portion of your treatment as they have shape memory and want to always spring back to their original shape. This helps align your teeth into an ideal archform! All orthodontic wires come in three different shapes: round, square and rectangular, when you look at them from the cross-section.
In this video we will discuss the difference between round and rectangular NiTi wires and why they are used!

  • Awesome video Dr. Greg. Most awaited video for me. You are very good at making detailed as well as short videos at the same time and we viewers find your conent very cool. How do you describe the size of archwire? In addition to the shape memory, the Ni-Ti wires also have one more characteristic, activation by our body heat, correct me if I'm wrong. But I am dying to know how the hell the SS wires work? I am desperate to know that and as you said, you will have it covered in your next video, which I am looking forward to. Super excited to see what's going to be next on your list always. Warm wishes to your channel. Loads of love from India!

    • Im so glad that you enjoyed the video!! Although NiTi is somewhat heat activated, I will be doing a video on super elastic NiTi that is heat activated soon =] The way we describe the size of a rectangular wire is by inches (height by width) so for instance a 16x22 NiTi is 0.016 inches by 0.022 inches. Hope that makes sense

  • I'm new and I came across your channel, your videos are very informational and interesting. I was told by my dentist that if I didn't get braces soon my teeth would get super bad when I was older, therefore she referred me to an orthodontist. My teeth are basically straight but two of my teeth on the top row are twisted and semi-crouded or kind of close together I guess. At the moment I am 16 and about a year and a half ago I had to get my wisdom teeth removed because they were pushing my others close together. In my opinion I was too young to get my wisdom teeth removed but I feel like dentist knows a whole lot more than me so me and my mom just ignored our opinions. I'm super nervous but at the same time I'm super anxious for braces, but for the most part I'm scared because I don't really know this ortho, but I've heard great things about him. Could you share your opinion on the situation, maybe shed some light on me?

  • Great video series Doctor! My questions are I’ve had braces for the past 2 and a half years and admittedly I didn’t take care of them as much as I should’ve. Now I’m a lot more focused on brushing after every time I eat, flossing everyday, etc. Will these changes help me to reverse any staining or damage I may have caused over time? I think I have at least 6 more months before they come off. Also, my lower gums are very swollen and it’s hard to brush below the brackets. If my teeth have white spots after the braces come off, is there anything I can do to correct this? Thank you!

    • These are all very difficult questions to answer online because it is case - dependent. I would ask both your orthodontist as well as your general dentist these questions and see if they can give you a more personalized answer after looking at your teeth

  • Love these videos, what do the numbers mean? For example, my orthodonstist would say 19-25 stainless steel.

    @523101997@5231019975 жыл бұрын
    • Thank you so much!! So those numbers are the size of the wire... so 19x25 is short for 0.019x0.025 inches.. so the wire is .019inches tall and 0.025 inches wide =]

  • Awesome video! I have a question. I had a lisp for about a week after I got my braces on but it went away once everything settled. But after getting them tightened for the first time about a month ago I've had a lisp again...but this time it hasn't gone away. Its not a big problem, and I had one as a really little kid. But I was just wondering if it will ever go away?

    @oddvids2160@oddvids21605 жыл бұрын
    • Hmm thats really interesting. I generally do not notice patients coming in with a lisp but I think once your tongue gets used to the new position, your lisp should go away, but I can't say for sure!

  • I'm having some of my brackets repositioned at my next appointment, that's an alternative to bending wires isn't it? My teeth were pretty wacky when I first started so I can imagine it was difficult to get the brackets in an ideal position to start with.

    @jessiebierman6502@jessiebierman65025 жыл бұрын
    • Man you're a pro now! You got it! In the beginning its nearly impossible to put them in the ideal position so once you get closer, like you said, we either repo or wire bend =]

  • Hey, Actually I am working on a project of treating an specific kind of a crossbite (unilateral posterior). For this I am using shape memory alloy. I studied that it regains it's shape when heated, can you please explain what is the source of heating in mouth? and how much displacement of teeth can we expect (there must be some losses). Thanks in advance

  • I have one of the ones that springs back and I have had my back archwires come out 3 times in 2 months. It hasn't even been a week since I got my left side fixed now the right. When I use tweezers it seems impossible. Can I just play it off to my orthodontist as it just happened when I get to my appointment? it's in 3 weeks😬 I know you wouldn't recommend this but I want to do it if I can as it doesn't hurt at all. Would you be able to tell if it was out for that long?

  • Thanks doctor :) Could you elaborate more on the sequence of wires used from starting to end. Also, which size and shape wire to use during certain procedure.. For eg during space closer.. Retraction.. If you use elastics...

  • Hi Greg, Is there a difference between wire-brands i.e. I have Damon Clear 2 braces (upper arch) and as I am the only one who has this brand, my dentist uses his own (white coated) wires. Which I do not know the brandname of. Somehow I feel more comphortable if the wires are from the same brand as my brackets. But am open to learn from others to obtain a wider perspective on this. I hope you find the time to share your knowledge on this subject. If it doesn’t matter, what do you advise: invest in Damon wires in a later stadium (phase 2 perhaps)? Square and/or rectangular wires (they can only be bought in a package of ten)? And ofcourse thank you on explaining braces and wires! Orthodontists explaining braces are so rare!

    @tanjapeters6516@tanjapeters65165 жыл бұрын
    • I can definitely do a video explaining different arm forms. The brands do have to be the same & actually they usually are not. We select wires that are best fit for you!

  • When you get powerchains, do you get the rectangular wires or does it vary?

    @whatsmyname8653@whatsmyname86535 жыл бұрын
    • You generally get power chains on rectangular wires but it really depends. Usually power chains are used on stainless steel wires too, not too often on light NiTi
