[BRACES EXPLAINED] Wires Pt.1 (NiTi Shape Memory)
Braces Explained: Wires Pt.1 (NiTi Shape Memory)
In this little minis series, I want to highlight some of the wires that you may hear your orthodontist using. The first one is probably the most popular word you hear, and that is “NiTi” wire. NiTi stands for nickel titanium and it is an annoy of metals that have shape memory!
They are used for the beginning portion of your treatment as they have shape memory and want to always spring back to their original shape. This helps align your teeth into an ideal archform! All orthodontic wires come in three different shapes: round, square and rectangular, when you look at them from the cross-section.
In this video we will discuss the difference between round and rectangular NiTi wires and why they are used!

Wow, I finally understand braces! I was always wondering how that wire makes teeth straighter... Now it makes sense. Great videos!
Woohoo! Glad you liked it =] Thank you so much for the kind words!!!
Me too, just got mine and i wonder why the doctor used very thin wire. I came here to watch.
I've been bingeing these vids ever sinc my ortho told me I would be getting braces four days ago. I'm ready stressed and knowing what's gonna happen to my mouth is really calming and instructive. Thanks!!😃
could you make a video about clear vs wire retainers?
Sure! I plan on doing one on different types of retainers in a few weeks so hang tight!
Love your channel. As an adult with braces for the first time I have lots of questions and enjoy knowing exactly what the process is. Thank you for taking the time to share! It's much appreciated!
Ah thank you so much! That means a lot to me and I'm glad that my videos are helping you through the process!!
Extremely helpful videos Dr. Greg. I don’t ask many questions because at my appointments I’m just trying to get in and out. I really appreciate your channel and will continue to support and recommend it as much as possible.
Aww thank you so much I really appreciate your support and recommendation more than you can imagine! Trying to grow this channel as much as I can!
I've gone through the same changes in wire as you have explained!!! Thank you so much for making such informative videos🙏♥️
This is my favorite braces channel! I tune in all the time. Have learned a lot!
Ah thats so nice! THank you so much fore the kind words =]
Hi Dr! This helps me to understand more. Next month the dentist will be changing my wire into ‘bigger’ wire. Now that I know bigger wire means rectangular wire, I feel a lil bit of ease and happy that my teeth has moved a lot. Thank you!
I absolutely love your videos. You answer a lot of questions that we may forget to ask the orthodontist.
Ahh thank you so much! That really means a lot to me and motivates me to keep producing! Thank you!
Hi Dr Greg - whilst I did a lot of research into how other adults (I'm 50+) were planning to get and then coping with braces before I had my fitting 3 days ago, I was intrigued about the mechanics around what would happen and why after the fitting. I've now found your great explanation on wires - many thanks.
Dude I have never had braces or anything but I watch all these videos. Wish you could go over anything in life very informative and easy to understand.
Woah thank you so much!! That means so much to me!! =] Thanks for checking these out!
After searching and searching I could NOT find information on literally HOW braces work. I recently got braces and I couldn't wrap my head around it- but NOW because of YOU I completely get it! So detailed and great visuals THANK YOU SO MUCH! *Subbed!
Ahhh that is so amazing! THank you so much for watching and your support!! =] I really appreciate it
I was just about to ask you about wires and then here comes this video! HWOOOW! I'm scheduled for my 1st wire switch next month so I'm really looking forward to the rest of this series. :) Thanks so much for your videos.
That's so awesome haha I really appreciate the kind words =] Excited for your next appointment! Let me know how it goes!
This is exactly the explanation i wanted. Thank you

Woo I'm glad we were able to connect! Congrats on getting your braces soon - you're going to do awesome =] Theres nothing to be nervous about!
Dr. Greg Asatrian can you do a video on what to use on teeth for stains
That solved my curiosity with these wires! Thanks!
Thank you so much, Doc! This is very informative and this is something my orthodontist didn't explain to me when I asked her regarding the stuff that she puts in my teeth when I had my braces installed 2 months ago. :-)
Woo that's great! I'm glad that I was able to help you out in explaining how it works =]
why do you have braces for?
thanks, this was very informative
Of course! I'm glad that you found it useful =]
Hie doc Greg. Um a dentist in Zimbabwe, love how you explain everything. Keep up the good work . Include cases you have worked on please.
Wow! Interesting! now I know why my orthodontist changed my NITI wire to steel wire! Thank you so much!
Awesome! I'm glad that it was able to help you out! Thank YOU for watching =]
😊 These videos are appreciated as always! Thank you for the provided information :)
Thanks doctor! This is very informative and a great knowledge for people to know! I am having a rectangular wire now, my doctor will use a step up wire soon to pull my top teeth up, so that my bite will look more even!
Thanks Doc! Had Invisalign for 24 weeks now just fine tuning. Wore the first wire for 2 weeks now on the 2nd wire and will finish with the rectangular wire. Had no idea what that meant until watching your video. Really appreciate the details and animation.
Of course! Thank you so much for watching. Glad you found it helpful & congrats on almost being finished!
I need to have this guy as my orthodontist. Just got braces put on yesterday, all this is new to me.
this video amazed me, thanks doctor!

This is the first time i got to know how the braces really work. Thank you so much!
Of course ! So happy that it helped you out =]
Just got mine off today!!! They look amazing!!!
So awesome Congrats!!!
This was so helpful! Today I had my round wire changed to a square wire and I didn’t think at the appointment to ask what the square would do for my teeth. I am 4 months in! Love your videos!
Ahh thank you so much! I hope that this video was able to answer that question =]
This video was amazing
Ah thank you so much! I really appreciate that =]
Finally someone explained it!!
So glad I found your channel! I just got my braces put on and was wondering how teeth “know” which direction to move. Thanks for the info!
Thank you so much! Teeth dont "know" anything haha Its based on the forces we put on them and their reaction to the forces. Check out two videos that would help answer this: How teeth move & Wire bending . I think those should answer your questions!
Great video😘
I have never been so informed ♥️
Great illustrations 👌👌👌
Thanks G!
Great video doc ❤️❤️❤️

That's fantastic =] That's great that you can recognize that!
Great video!💗
Hey Supreme Gabby! Thanks so much! =]
Thank you for this video!! I now understand more about how braces works as I just got my adult braces a week ago! Can you please talk about extractions? I’m getting 4 teeth removed Saturday.

Interesting can't wait for the stainless steel wire video, love your channel.
Hang tight!!
Really it is very informative video. 👍
Thank you so much!
More wires please!!!!!
Hi Dr Greg and thanks for your insightful videos. If SS wires have no shape memory, why and what do you use them for?
Awesome video Dr. Greg. Most awaited video for me. You are very good at making detailed as well as short videos at the same time and we viewers find your conent very cool. How do you describe the size of archwire? In addition to the shape memory, the Ni-Ti wires also have one more characteristic, activation by our body heat, correct me if I'm wrong. But I am dying to know how the hell the SS wires work? I am desperate to know that and as you said, you will have it covered in your next video, which I am looking forward to. Super excited to see what's going to be next on your list always. Warm wishes to your channel. Loads of love from India!
Im so glad that you enjoyed the video!! Although NiTi is somewhat heat activated, I will be doing a video on super elastic NiTi that is heat activated soon =] The way we describe the size of a rectangular wire is by inches (height by width) so for instance a 16x22 NiTi is 0.016 inches by 0.022 inches. Hope that makes sense
Goo day Dr Greg, have been following your KZhead channel for about a year this is my first comment Thank you they are highly educative I will like you to post a video on the use of composite in fixing orthodontic brackets and the difference between the better composite material either flowable or others with demonstrations
Thank you so much for this video and all you do! I’m on my 6th month of treatment and it’s so awesome to really understand how braces work. Before discovering you I had to google everywhere but nothing is as concise and educational and easy to understand as your explanations! Dentistry is so awesome I wish I went down this route!
Ahh thats so great! Thank you so much =] I really appreciate it!!! It truly is an awesome field
I got a rectangle wire and I had no idea what it changed, thank you for this video
Of course! thank you so much for watching
thanks for breaking it down. i asked my boss the difference between niti and SS and i just couldn't understand and didn't want to keep asking. THANKS FOR THE BREAK DOWN!
Absolutely ! Hope to make some more videos soon to help further explaint hings!
Very interesting
Isn't it??!
Thank you for ur amazing video Dr Greg😍😍😍 Could you make a intro about lingual braces someday? They are way more expensive but idk why
Sure! that sounds like a great idea =]
Hi Dr. I wonder if you can do a demonstrating vedio regarding the sequences of using the arch wires used in different stages of orthodontic treatment.. thank you so much.. God bless you..
I have rectangular wires on my upper teeth and lower teeth 😁 I’m in my 19th month of my treatment
Amazing I wish I could come across you ten years ago
Aw that so nice of you! Thank you so much =]
Hi Dr. Greg, my ortho recently changed my wire on my bottom row to what he called an 18 wire. They said it will move my lower k9’s into place.
I've heard my ortho say niti so many times and I always thought he was talking about how my elastics were tied. Thank you 😂
Haha no problem! So glad I was able to help =]
Can you post a video about different type of braces, and what is the difference between them...😊 Love your channel.
Thank you so much!! Yup, I can =]
Nice! Could you do an video on steel ties?
Absolutely! I plan on doing that one very soon actually (maybe this or next weekend!)
So I’m an adult and just got a rectangular wire put on. I still have a gap that needs to be closed but this time my orthodontist took my power chain off but didn’t say if this wire will finish closing the gap. My question is will a rectangular wire close a gap? Thanks for all the helpful info!
I am new to this channel and am a Gp dentist trying to get my hands on ortho .. let’s see where it takes me .
Watching this video, I can feel the pain.. 😂 I just got a bit thicker wire with a little bend for the corner teeth, oh boy do they hurt. I know now why. Thanks doc!
Haha >_< Glad that it was able to help explain !
This is great my dentist never explain this to me, Now i know what my teeth is going through. Thanks Doc for this helpful info.
Of course! Thank you for tuning in and checking it out =] Happy to help!!
@@DrGregAsatrian yes i always watch your videos
I'm new and I came across your channel, your videos are very informational and interesting. I was told by my dentist that if I didn't get braces soon my teeth would get super bad when I was older, therefore she referred me to an orthodontist. My teeth are basically straight but two of my teeth on the top row are twisted and semi-crouded or kind of close together I guess. At the moment I am 16 and about a year and a half ago I had to get my wisdom teeth removed because they were pushing my others close together. In my opinion I was too young to get my wisdom teeth removed but I feel like dentist knows a whole lot more than me so me and my mom just ignored our opinions. I'm super nervous but at the same time I'm super anxious for braces, but for the most part I'm scared because I don't really know this ortho, but I've heard great things about him. Could you share your opinion on the situation, maybe shed some light on me?
Ugh, I remember when I first started my treatment. I had 2 teeth that were in the back.. OMG I popped Tylenol like there was no tomorrow 🙈
Probably helped out quite a bit though!
Could you do a video of what happens at your first adjustment for braces?
Every orthodontist treats different so it is a bit tough to make a video saying what each doc does but generally when you get your braces, you get a NiTi wire and then for the first few visits, we increase the size of the wire!
Hello Dr, plz make a video on orthodontic wire sequence plz
Great video series Doctor! My questions are I’ve had braces for the past 2 and a half years and admittedly I didn’t take care of them as much as I should’ve. Now I’m a lot more focused on brushing after every time I eat, flossing everyday, etc. Will these changes help me to reverse any staining or damage I may have caused over time? I think I have at least 6 more months before they come off. Also, my lower gums are very swollen and it’s hard to brush below the brackets. If my teeth have white spots after the braces come off, is there anything I can do to correct this? Thank you!
These are all very difficult questions to answer online because it is case - dependent. I would ask both your orthodontist as well as your general dentist these questions and see if they can give you a more personalized answer after looking at your teeth
Love these videos, what do the numbers mean? For example, my orthodonstist would say 19-25 stainless steel.
Thank you so much!! So those numbers are the size of the wire... so 19x25 is short for 0.019x0.025 inches.. so the wire is .019inches tall and 0.025 inches wide =]
What about reverse curve wires? Not sure if we are using them for the right purpose.
Could you explain torque in relation to orthodontic movement
I’m getting spacers soon. any tips?
Awesome video! I have a question. I had a lisp for about a week after I got my braces on but it went away once everything settled. But after getting them tightened for the first time about a month ago I've had a lisp again...but this time it hasn't gone away. Its not a big problem, and I had one as a really little kid. But I was just wondering if it will ever go away?
Hmm thats really interesting. I generally do not notice patients coming in with a lisp but I think once your tongue gets used to the new position, your lisp should go away, but I can't say for sure!
My first consultation is NEXT week! 😀😱 (I’m weirdly excited for braces)
You should be! That's so awesome =] I'm excited for you! Keep us posted on how that goes!
Dr. Greg Asatrian I will 👍😄
I'm having some of my brackets repositioned at my next appointment, that's an alternative to bending wires isn't it? My teeth were pretty wacky when I first started so I can imagine it was difficult to get the brackets in an ideal position to start with.
Man you're a pro now! You got it! In the beginning its nearly impossible to put them in the ideal position so once you get closer, like you said, we either repo or wire bend =]
A “buccal tube” just fell off my back molar but its not connected to the wire. Will I have to wear braces for longer?
Sir 🙏plzz make video on wire sequenceing in treatment in details
Hey, Actually I am working on a project of treating an specific kind of a crossbite (unilateral posterior). For this I am using shape memory alloy. I studied that it regains it's shape when heated, can you please explain what is the source of heating in mouth? and how much displacement of teeth can we expect (there must be some losses). Thanks in advance
I have one of the ones that springs back and I have had my back archwires come out 3 times in 2 months. It hasn't even been a week since I got my left side fixed now the right. When I use tweezers it seems impossible. Can I just play it off to my orthodontist as it just happened when I get to my appointment? it's in 3 weeks😬 I know you wouldn't recommend this but I want to do it if I can as it doesn't hurt at all. Would you be able to tell if it was out for that long?
Thanks doctor :) Could you elaborate more on the sequence of wires used from starting to end. Also, which size and shape wire to use during certain procedure.. For eg during space closer.. Retraction.. If you use elastics...
I may start doing videos for dental professionals soon so hang tight for those!
Dr. Greg Asatrian omg please do :D thank you so much !!
So longing for the same thing! I’m in for my next appointment on september 11th and I’m affraid I have more questions then most “can handel”. ☺️ I’m just so curious .
Hi im a dental nurse.... Here in ksa.. Im actually assigned with GP doctors but time to time they put me in ortho. I want to ask what is the best wire i could put for the brace of my friend. He has like 2mm gap on some of his teeth. Or can u make video. When can we place such size of wire. Thanks I know it should be liscenced doctors could put braces for safety.
Hi Greg, Is there a difference between wire-brands i.e. I have Damon Clear 2 braces (upper arch) and as I am the only one who has this brand, my dentist uses his own (white coated) wires. Which I do not know the brandname of. Somehow I feel more comphortable if the wires are from the same brand as my brackets. But am open to learn from others to obtain a wider perspective on this. I hope you find the time to share your knowledge on this subject. If it doesn’t matter, what do you advise: invest in Damon wires in a later stadium (phase 2 perhaps)? Square and/or rectangular wires (they can only be bought in a package of ten)? And ofcourse thank you on explaining braces and wires! Orthodontists explaining braces are so rare!
I can definitely do a video explaining different arm forms. The brands do have to be the same & actually they usually are not. We select wires that are best fit for you!
Thank you so much for your reply! Looking forward to see more video’s from you explaining braces!
Do you still use niti square wire after round wire for teeth alignment? Or you proceed with the stainless steel square wire? I have so many questions coz I use 022 slot bracket
About how long does it take to see a change after the braces are put on?
Do you think you could make a video about the ALF appliance?
I am not too familiar with this appliance but I will look into it!
Wow! This is so awesome! Thanks for sharing doc!!! ☺️☺️ I just got mine put on and I have the round wire, and I was wondering why I have small gaps now on my top jaw I have a tiny gap where I didn't have one before and lol my teeth seem to whistle when I talk 😅😅😅 do you know why that is?
During the initial wires, spaces do develop just because of alignment but we close them all up as we go through the process!
@@DrGregAsatrian oh wow!! Thank you so much Doc! You're awesome!! ☺️☺️😁🙏♥️
When you get powerchains, do you get the rectangular wires or does it vary?
You generally get power chains on rectangular wires but it really depends. Usually power chains are used on stainless steel wires too, not too often on light NiTi
I have Damon braces and my wire broke, I currently don’t have an orthodontist but I did see I can buy the round or rectangle wire online, but it has different sizes can you explain the difference between the sizes?
My Orthodontist gave me thicker wires Friday to help close up gaps and before putting them in, he put some bends in them where my gaps when I got my teeth extracted in March. Does that help close the gaps I have faster?
i just got my first i think square wires and it’s hurt WAY more than my round wires lol. It’s been nearly a month and there’s still pain here and there. Especially with my new elastics i just got
