  • 1:29 - 1:36 I hate that she said that. Vocalists and singers (who take or teach lessons) know that each vocal coach and instructor has to approach each person differently when it comes to singing because they are dealing with different instruments, from different bodies, from different people, with different habits. It is crazy how people think if you go to the same person, everyone becomes the same. That is not true. Also, it is crazy how people think you need to just a few vocal lessons in order to know the basics. It takes years just to get out of some bad habits we have in singing (nasality is the biggest one), and if you want to stay consistent, then you will need to see a vocal coach.

  • This is a very important topic to talk about. And I see a lot of artists nowadays favour style over technique (kpop being at the top of the list). That's often a recipe for disaster. And I hear so many people who are not vocalists themselves call them terrible singers. They're still very much singers, but ones who are not adequately trained especially in the basics. All in all, you can't build style without technique because it'll eventually come back to bite you in the blubber. Vocal nodes and other vocal damage exist, so that's why we build technique: not just to be able to sound better and do more, but to keep our voices healthy. Plus, vocal warmups and vocal exercises are two very different things. Most people that favour style over technique usually do warmups and call it a day. That's not how it works. Just like bodily exercise, you can't just walk to the gym, warmups and then leave 😂. That's not how stuff goes. Exercise keeps you healthy, not warmups. There are so many vocal coaches out there, and some don't really know what they're talking about. One that has been monumental to my almost decade long singing journey (and that's putting it lightly) is Eric Arceneaux. He has a YT channel and his videos are fantastic for singers at all levels ❤

    • @@youngornitier9581 Well I don't agree with you... Plus his methods have been really helpful to not just me but a myriad of others. I've tried several vocal coaches, but none come close. My voice has never been healthier. And vocal typology can be tricky to classify, but I assure you that he's a baritone.

      @DiogoChris@DiogoChris Жыл бұрын
    • @@DiogoChris I can assure you he's not a baritone, and you probably don't know a thing about baritones if you think he is and are completely unfamiliar with anything operatic about baritones. His "low voice tips" video is nothing but him swallowing the sound in his "classical" demonstration with a froggy/tongue tensed sound, his speaking voice is far too high in median pitch to be a baritone. Guy simply does not know how to belt. Telling me his methods have been helpful to a myriad of others doesn't mean much, you're probably referring to his subscriber count or something and if popularity was what made vocal teachers good then I guess Tristan Paredes is automatically the best or something on youtube.

      @youngornitier9581@youngornitier9581 Жыл бұрын
    • @@youngornitier9581 This topic doesn't deserve too much argument. You don't know who I am and don't know what I know, but I'mma try to make this short and sweet. There isn't one voice that encompasses the characteristics of a voice type. The voice comes in many different colours and shades (tonal quality, weight, tessitura, etc). Gather as many sopranos as possible and you'll find out that they don't have the same timbre. This is why within those categories, there are many different subtypes because grouping everyone under a generalized vocal type is unrealistic and impractical. Within the baritones are sub-classes; lyric baritones, baritenors, leggero baritones, light baritones, dramatic baritones, kavalierbaritone, baryton Martin, etc. And within these classes are singers with various tonal qualities. I keep talking about colours, so I'll use it to make a point: Within the red family, there are a ton of different shades: crimson, burgundy, plum, even salmon and coral. But do you know that there are some odd looking ones that Chinese red, and red-purple. Looking at them, one wouldn't instinctively group them under shades of red, because Chinese red looks brown, and red-purple looks, well...purple. But they are still in the same colour family. So because of the intensity, the light, shade, colour temperature, and other factors, they don't all look the alike or similar. This, I'm using to emphasize my point on vocal types. Each voice type comes in different shades, and you can't count one out because it doesn't sound like the "typical" example of that voice type. Some may be able to reach certain notes easier than others, but they still fall within that category because of the reasons above. Ergo, there maybe overlaps with another vocal type. And I know Eric usually likes to sing in the upper register that's why it sounds to you like he's a tenor, but he's not. And need I remind that Baritone is literally the commonest voice type among males. It's easily way more common than tenors, so it's not too much of a surprise if many male voices fall within that category. And I'm not rating his method's effectiveness by his subscriber count. That's dumb. I followed other vocal coaches who had way more subscribers and subsequently sustained pretty bad vocal damage. But ever since I found Eric's channel, not only has my voice healed, but I've been improving in leaps and bounds. And as a result, I have to believe the testimonies of other people who follow his advice/expertise. And the amount of people who watch his videos are not as much as you think, so he's pretty much a semi-hidden gem. So much for "short and sweet". But hey, at least I got my points straight.

  • I do not think Christina has damaged her vocals at all. She has found her comfort zone as a vocalist. I don't expect to be wowed by anything new in the future. She has admitted to having zero mixed voice - she will probably ALWAYS be able to belt, and to her credit, she can belt pretty high from her gut - but not frequently. I don't think she aspires to develop a mixed register or to hit A5's and Bb5's without falsetto. Alicia has definitely damanged her voice, and has always been inconsistent but that makes sense - she's a trained pianist and musician with lots of instruments under her belt. She was all of that and a songwriter first - singing was not her first love or her first priority.

  • Finally, someone who does these vocal videos said it. I've been saying the same thing myself. There is such a weirdly pretentious attitude surrounding technique in music and vocals. It's just not necessary. I mean, even if you look at the vocal trinity . . . . do people REALLY think there weren't more "Technically" according to technique and what not vocalists out there? It's not a coincidence that Celine, Mariah and Whitney were all incredibly attractive women for their time. They had technique, a little something style wise in some of their cases(Mariah and Celine ), the right connections ( Whitney ) , and a marketability due to being beautiful. People with greater technique were out there, but those women succeeded because they had something to go with the talent and were marketable. Technique is one of those things that can aid you, but if you don't have IT . . . it's not going to make you a gorgeous performance or piece. And when it comes to master artists in any field, it's not the ones with the best technique we remember. That's just a fact. A lesser singer can outshine a technique based singer, it happens all the time. But having technique never hurts and can only aid you. But people don't love . . . . for example Tarja Turunen's voice because she is an amazing classical singer, she is but she has vocal character and tone and timber that no one else can bring. She left Nightwish 18 years ago and people still talk about missing her and how she was Nightwish. ( You don't have to know anything about her or listen to her to know based on that what she meant to people. I mean, Selena is ANOTHER great example. )

She's able to hit high notes with ease, has a great lower register for being a soprano, has great vocal runs, and has great vibrato, which all require technique. But she also uses style in her singing too doing all kinds of ad-libs and stuff I love it always.

Same with versatile singers like Paul McCartney (who can scream, growl, and shout like anybody), and even crooners like David Bowie.
