Robert Spencer interviewed on 'Did Muhammad Exist?'

Robert Spencer was interviewed by Dr Smith on his book 'Did Muhammad Exist?' for an hour. He did a great job of reviewing why the historical Muhammad of the 7th century is quite different from the 9th-10th century traditional view we have of Muhammad, questioning why there is so little evidence for him anywhere in the century he lived, while simultaneously asking whether we should believe in any of the references we have of Muhammad from the later centuries?
They also discussed the problem of 'embarrassment' and how we can respond to them, as well as looking at why Abd al-Malik needed Muhammad, and why he indeed needed Islam, as well as what this means for Islam today.
Robert would like to do a follow-up session where people like you can ask him questions directly. So, if you would like to put questions to him, write them below, in the 'comments' section, and we will schedule another interview, possibly next week to let you direct your queries to him.
Enjoy the interview.

  • I owe a lot to Robert Spencer. Back in my college days the woman who would become my wife and mother of my kids (whom I love very much 😊) Was a Shia Muslim. After she read the History of Jihad she became a Christian. 4 years later we got married.

    • Im assuming you do not read or speak Arabic when asking this. When you speak to Muslims about the Quaran, do they ever mention that it can only be read in Arabic? Any other language is aberrant? Some other Christian apologists who engage with Muslims have said the Muslims will object to any non-Arabic based interpretation or exegesis.

I believe I have seen many, many hour-long videos in which Dr.Jay Smith taught the historical Muhammad or the Quran. And I believe I have every book that Bob Spencer wrote. In fact, as I recall, he sent me one and I sent him mine in return. If anyone can pull this video up again , it is worth every second of listening--no punches were pulled and nothing left unsaid.

  • Really great to see the two of you together!! 32:30 On the Dome of the rock, have you considered the context of its construction (685-691) by abd alMalik during the time of his conflict with ibn alZubayr? For a time, the Kaaba was not accessible to those under abd alMalik's rule, whether in Petra or Mecca, so there would be a temptation to create a rival Kaaba (in similar thinking to Jeroboam and the temple being in Jerusalem, so he starts a new religion confined to the territories of the Northern kingdom). With that in mind, what does the Dome of the Rock look like? It looks like it's built to be circumambulated, with plenty of space around it for people to do so - and it even has its own rock inside to venerate. Later, with ibn alZubayr eliminated (691), and the Kaaba accessible again even though displaced, the Dome of the Rock could be re-purposed.

The Muslim calendar was instituted after Mohammed's death, with a starting-point of his emigration (hijra) to Medina (then Yathrib) ten years earlier. Some Muslims, however, seem to have correlated this point of origin with the year which came to span 624-5 in the Gregorian calendar rather than the canonical year of 622." - www.opendemocracy.net/en/mohammed_3866jsp/ Where exactly is it written that he died in 632 AD, and what about this above?

If you copy and paste a comment - which I suspect is the case - KZhead automatically throws that into spam. Thirdly, I get recommended 2-3 books or papers a week to read, but I often just don't get the time to do so. I spend 20-30 hours working on my channel and your claim is just absurd. Fourthly, I received a tweet message the other day regarding the Masjid Al Haram and it was through that I became aware of it and I am more than happy to send a timestamped image of that tweet if you should so wish. Fifthly, all this information is in the public forum and to think you have exclusive knowledge of it is delusional. I wish I had the time you think I have to read this book of yours. With all due respect, your claim is false and I would appreciate an apology. If I do get a chance to read your book, I will give it due mention.

    • @Edgar Morina Listen, I sympathise as I know what it is like to put a book out there and to get little response. My advice is "don't big up your own book". Don't devalue it either by giving it away for free. If you have put in a lot of research time, then it deserves to be monetised. If it is good, then the people who read it will spread the word. I remember the contents being extensive which is a good sign. But also remember a lot of information is already out in the public domain and you can't go around assuming that people are using your material, it will make you look bad.

I hear that a lot of the ideas and concepts of the book are disputed and I do keep hearing that scholars are constantly uncovering evidence that are consistently in line with the traditional narrative of Islamic history so... I don't know. All I can do is look at both sides of the arguments (seeing as there are reputable sources on both sides) and wait for more evidence to come out. The problem is that I'm from a Muslim background and the area I live in has religion embedded in it and so my natural bias is to go with the traditional narrative but, like I said, his book "Did Muhammad Exist?" did really open my eyes.

What's more, the Sana'a is only around 28% of the Qur'an, and is a palmimpsest, which means it has a lower layer of writing, and that lower layer has 60 verses, with over 70 differences in that layer with that of the upper layer. • Well, Jay, I have been looking forward to this for quite some time and boy did it live up to my expectations! I am glad that either by design or by accident the issue of Mohammad as a name vs. a sobriquet came up. I have been trying to find out if this word, as a name, existed prior to Islam. I couldn't find any examples in my research but as Dan Gibson keeps saying. "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence." Robert Spencer made it clear, as a personal name it did not exist prior to Islam. That has always made sense to me. After all, what loving mother would name her kid: "The one worthy of praise". If that didn't earn him an unending series of wedgies from his classmates nothing would! Now you and Robert Spencer have me champing at the bit for the next episode. May it be soon and may there never come a day when some far distant historian writes a book titled "Did Jay Smith and Robert Spencer Exist?"

Also the "Golden House" church of Antioch (province of Syria) built 327 AD (finally destroyed by an earthquake in 588 AD) had the same eight sided layout, with an ambulatory around a central area. • @PfanderFilms I do believe there is a reasonably strong case for the existence of muhammad as real person. However, it is more likely though that the historical muhammad was very much unlike the man typically described in the traditions. The following is just a quick timeline describing who muhammad was and what may have really happened. 1) Pre 632AD - (Pre islamic doctrine phase) Phase 1 - The transitional development of an arab religion. a) What sort of arabs lived here pre 632 and what kind of arab was muhammad? - A few historians give an account of this:- Roman historians Ammianus and Zosimus. And then we have Eusibius, sozomen & Theodret ( sozomens contemporary), all 3 of whom have a biblical take on the identification of the arabs. Of particular interest to me are sozomen (who explains the development of Judaic practices amongst the arabs) & Theodret (who explains the development of Christian conversions & practices amongst the arabs). So who were muhammad and his companions essentially? - I feel the need to insist that sozomens account best describes them as the Hagarenes or Ishmaelites who were (NOT JEWS but) later felt the need to identify with jewish practices and identified themselves as Saracens. Therefore, muhammad and the core element amongst his followers, were most likely of an abrahamic (originally a jewish like but not actually of the jewish) faith who believed in a messianic message and the belief in the end times. But why do I single out this group and not the christian elements described by Theodret or by say someone like professor peter von sivers? - Well, its the sheer explanatory power of this group. Its explain the following: i) Beliefs: Muslim, like jews believe God is trancendent. Any association of an incarnated human son is blasphemy. ii) Rituals and practices: wudu (washing), fasting, kosher foods, beards and other practices are similar (muchbof which has remained unchanged even today). iii) Contemporary and subsequent association: Note that they were identified as Saracens well before muhammad arrived on the scene and then continued to be identified by the sane name during and after the conquest. Phase 2 - 622AD Arabs declare an independence. Little is known about Muhammad, but he may have been amongst one of the (Judaic) Saracens and may have led or been the leader of a rebellion. 2) Between 632-634 AD (Conquest against a Abrahamic Messianic background):- Muhammad died sometime around this period. He may or may not have been alive during the 634 conquest, but that is not certain. An unnamed prophet (dt 634AD):- The account of Doctrina Jacobi (dated 634AD) states that amongst the conquring Saracens, at the inception of the conquest, was present a prophet (a john the baptist like figure) who was then proclaiming the coming of the Christ. While it doesn't tell us much about this prophet, it does: i) suggest that this prophet was possibly alive (or perceived as such) at the time of this conquest. ii) and is consistent with a jewish/Christian like sect (i.e not the traditional Jewish kind or the typical Chalcedonian Christian one either that had already earlier recognised Jesus as the Messianic Christ) that was significantly representive of this invading group. A named leader Muhammad (the evidence):- While there is little evidence in early documented history linking such a character to a one described within traditional records, there is certainly positive evidence that a person named muhammad was indeed associated as a leader of the conquering arab saracens. Several accounts such as Thomas the Presbyter in 640AD and Bishop Sebeos 660AD and a growing number of inscriptions suggest that the existence of such a person is likely based on historical fact. 2.1) Between 632-685 AD - (Phase 1 - Development of a faith): - No one knows for sure if quranic material is being written down as a single text at this time. Nevertheless, this is definitely a period when the Arab hierarchy colloborate on different ideas and are shared between regional Saracens and non-chalcedonian christian denominations (along with some persian influencea) and these are begining to come together (The Saracen/Judaic aspect of these ideas definitely dominate though). The ideas that are shared by Christian groups of the period are better described here: m.kzhead.info/sun/acOYc5uPrGqniWw/bejne.html/ Correspondence letters between Leo III & Umar's II sheds light on external perceptions on the development of the new religion: An early 8th century correspondence between Umar II & Leo III has leo III suggesting, as part of his polemic statement to Umar II, that during the early days of the arab conquest it was Umar(the rashidun), Salman the persian and Ali (the rashidun) who had composed the book (or compilition works) for the new faith despite rumours going around that it was suposedly God sent. As an external but nevertheless early source, it does present an relatively early understanding of foreign elements external to the arabs, as well as an explanation suggesting that some early proponents of the faith, had perhaps earlier conspired to develop a new religion. 3) Post 685 AD - (Phase 2 - Further religious editing, standardisation of the belief and religious & political consolodation and establishment of religious empire): - A huge redefinition of past theology and consolodation of power, standardisation of the religious school of thought and a distinction between religious groups. No more ecumenism, no more believers movement. Its muslims and non muslims now. During the 690's, Zubayr (the competitor caliph who begins the muhammad revival movement) is taken out and his cause and his followers are taken up Abd al Malik (the very person in competition who has him killed). Following that the dome of the rock is built as a political statement and soon after that the Meccan masjid al haram is also built in 697 AD (we have a rock inscription to this effect. Do note that the inscription says "BUILT" and not "REBUILT". www.islamic-awareness.org/history/islam/inscriptions/haram1 Also despite the new construction, as per Jacob of Edessa's account in 708AD as well as Dan Gibsons recent works, the Hagarenes still continued praying in the direction of their old qibla, even well after the building of this new Meccan kaaba). At least Two More 8th Century sources address developments from this post 685 AD period: i) The first again is the early 8th century correspondence between Umar II & Leo III that has leo III suggesting that it is Hajjaj who had edited, destroyed, and standardised texts/works that were already in existence prior to these edits and then had these distributed his areas of influence. He (Leo) also stated that, despite this destruction, the works of Hajjaj did not manage to make all the works of his predecessors go away and that, amongst the remaining distributed works of Hajjaj, there still prevailed some of the works of Ali (the rashidun) that were not destroyed. ii) The second source for this period is John of Damascus (730 AD). He lays down a detailed form of Polemics against this newly repackaged, once again re-edited religion. But his polemics are not as important as what might be concluded from them, namely, that by around 730 AD: a) The structure of this belief system and related texts were substantially recognisable, compared with that which exists in the Quran today. b) Despite this degree of recognisability, at this point the people of this belief are still identified as Saracens/Hagarines/Ishmaelites and not Muslims. Also there appears to be no clear knowledge of the name of the religious text of the Saracens, despite (John) being reasonably familiar with its related text. c) And finally, despite the religious text of this saracens having been substantually complete and recognisable by 730 AD, it is likely that it was still nevertheless incomplete as a matter of fact at this point. For one, John's mention of text and detailed story of the "she-camel", a chapter not mentioned in the Quran today (except by mere reference) suggests that there were further edits yet to come. Furthermore, this seems more likely when one considers that the people of this religion were yet to be clearly identified as Muslims, their book still awaited its name as the Quran (or at the very least, the name was not quite as popular/ widely accepted or known yet) and the Qibla was yet to be universally redirected towards the direction of the Meccan Kaaba.

  • You are both very clever and logical. I just wish you applied the same logic and methodology to christianity itself that exactly the same problems (if not worse) than Islam.
