The E60 BMW M5 is an amazing car -- but it's horribly unreliable. Today I'm reviewing a 2008 M5 with a 6-speed manual to show you why the E60 M5 is so cool -- and also why you shouldn't get one. I'm showing you all the key quirks and features of the BMW M5, and the most interesting things about the 2008 BMW M5.

  • Just did rod bearings on an 08 m5 with 140k miles and let me tell you the previous owner was persistent on letting the car warm up before beating on it and that makes all the difference. They had a ton of life left on them. Key to this cars longevity is letting it warm up before play time. It’s 10w60 which is syrup when cold.

    @Meatislife@Meatislife2 жыл бұрын
    • Great comment. I have a manual 07 with 85k miles. It seems the warm up period is the difference. Mine apparently had a rebuild at 37k miles due to the bearings. New oil every 3k miles and proper warm up should make the difference.

      @MikeyPraz2121@MikeyPraz21212 жыл бұрын
    • The problem with BMW M cars with high revving normally aspirated engines is that they were bought on finance and ragged to death from cold then given back. Finding one that's been looked after is rare because so few of them were bought to be owned long term. They all seem to have 50-150k miles now. Find an exotic car like an period Ferarri and most of them are barely broken in.

    • Totally agree, I do the same, 10 miles warm up and then gradually crank it up, same with the cool down, last 5 miles let it glide and take it easy. My SMG pump failed, probably the electric part, can't wait to get it back in the road.

      @georgmichaelcoermann890@georgmichaelcoermann8902 жыл бұрын
    • Also doesn't help that BMW decided to link the warm up lights to the coolant temp, which is boiling in about 2 minutes, whereas the 10w60 oil takes about an hour 🤣

  • The rod bearing issue is what happens when you give a car with a racing engine to plebs to drive . In order to have a motor like this rev as high as it does , you have to run tight bearing tolerances . They also run a fairly heavy weight oil so that when up to temp the oil can protect the engine correctly. So if the car isn't warmed up very gently, watching the oil temperature and not gunning it AT ALL until up to full temp , you will damage the bearings If the oil is not thin enough to flow through the bearing , ut cannot protect the bearing. Most normal car drivers just wouldn't understand this at all .

    • @Matthew Nicholas I work on old aircooled Volkswagens and build larger aircooled performance engines for them , 2.3 litre 200 hp sort of motors as well as 2 litre ish ones for campers . They all have bigger sump extensions , full flow oiling and external oil coolers and henceforth hold about 7 to 8 litres of oil in total . I have Autometer gauges in them and the oil takes a fairly long time to get up to temperature. I make it a rule of thumb to not give them any more than gentle driving till past 150 deg Fahrenheit and no full throttle till at 180

Seriously, you had to overpay, and buy it on reputation alone... no test drives for a car that cost as much as modest condominium in that era. Now I see one down the street at my local dealer 2010 M5 pristine with only 120,000km on the ODO no accidents all maintenance done for only $10,800. They got a 2014 Corolla for $12,500 and the dealers been pushing the cheaper BMW on me for days now. I REALLY want one but know the hassle and headache that comes with it. It's funny though, I am not sure how someone would equate a 507hp, 383ft lbs, 8250RPM redline, and 205mph top speed car with being reliable? If you want a sporty reliable car, get a Honda Accord GT. If you want an amazing one-of-a-kind vehicle, you have to be realistic about what you are getting into and be ready to maintain it.

  • I bought a 2007 M5 around 2010 or 2011 and had it for a few years. Didn't have any major issues with it during that time and about 20k miles but I did have to replace the battery and a few of the SMG relays. Did a ECU upgrade that claimed around 540hp on 93 octane and that thing kicked like a mule. Also reprogrammed the SMG computer with the Euro software that gave the car back real launch control and made the transmission work as designed (launch control in US spec M5's just dumps the clutch and is really burnout mode ... Euro software has both depending on how quickly you put your foot on the gas pedal when you activate it). Oddly enough the most common issue that causes the dash to light up (same on the normal E60 5-series) is the steering wheel position sensor. Relatively easy to fix but this one sensor takes out cruise control, traction control, M mode, hill assist and a few other systems. Mine came with it broken when I bought it but it was replaced for free by the dealership and then all was fine until one day the car wouldn't go into gear (that was a dangerous week driving the V10 beast without any nannies!). Some troubleshooting and a $25 relay later and all was good again. Luckily it wasn't my commuter car but I did get rid of it while things were good and I was aware of the potential for engine bearing, VANOS and SMG issues. Also got to learn BMW ISTA-D and ISTA-P quite well when I owned that car :) I would love to own one again but yeah they aren't for the uninformed that doesn't recognize their potential for issues.

Used a small CRT screen and would get German TV channels if you were sitting still. Great car for the Autobahn, although the steering wasn't awesome (V-8s got recirculating ball, V-6s had rack and pinion). Drove for hours at 120mph.

  • I had a E36M3 98 manual & a E46M3 competition SMG 05 both purchased new. After I totaled the E46 I purchased a new 08 M5 SMG- loved the car but about a year into it the engine failed & the dealership replaced it with a brand new one flown in from Germany. Once the warranty expired I purchased another E46M3. The M5I was like dating a super model. I got lots of attention & people wanted to race me. It was black on black But I truly enjoyed the E46m3 more. My first 2 we’re really reliable as a Toyota & were a blast to drive. I still have my E46 convertible. I love the top down with the wind breaker screen. Must have that & it’s so much fun especially living in Orange County California. I still miss the E60 sometimes. Think of the E60 as a 4dr supercar. At the time there was nothing out there for even twice the money that could beat it. Take the limiter off & it will top off at 205mph. That’s crazy for even cars of today.

I ended up supercharging the engine, and soon later, both throttle actuators went out. Thank God some fanboy from NY paid me all the money since it was Manual and Supercharged. Shortly after purchasing it Vanos pump went out on him. 😂😂😂😂 having this car is like being in a toxic relationship, two years have gone by and thinking about buying myself a third one.

The performance was precise and surprisingly quick. Still, none of that matters if you can't depend on it starting when you want to enjoy it. I'm convinced that only hardcore DIYers or full time mechanics with an empty garage waiting should go anywhere near these brittle bricks. BMWs act like supercars but are priced for the general market. BMW service and warranty for the first 4 years is second to none. Lease > love > dump.

He didn't mention the exhaust note, didn't even really explain the MPower mode well, nor the styling or performance bits like the front splitter and wider fenders. I think he went into this with his mind made up. He said it was all around better than the e39 but the final score doesn't really reflect that. He also didn't mention that the seats adjust while driving to keep you in your seat. The bolstering actually adjusts from side to side while taking high speed turns.
