Agree, it was bait to get a look at the shop and cars for other illegal activity. Signs its a chop shop, hiding other known street racing cars, etc. If your legit an easy hook to swallow. My guess is the outcome would have been different if any of the makes and models matched the night's street racing complaints.

A few years ago when I first moved to USA, I found about copart. Extremely cheap prices in comparison where I came from got me excited. Visited my local yard a few times I decided to buy a salvaged car and ship it back home to my friends so that they can fix and drive it. So I did. But for some dumb reason I thought why not to drive this slightly rear ended salvaged title car to the yard of a shipping company which would eventually export it. Drove it for 400 miles from Minneapolis to Chicago. No registration, salvage title, no tag and being a foreign exchange student no USA issued driving license. I was lucky enough not to get pulled over. It stills scares me to this day when I think about though.
Come to florida. When i rebuilt my E30 the inspection consisted of looking at the mileage, and the vin. 😂
30's Revolution I had to go twice in less than 6 months because i changed insurance. The First Lady was like "oh my god how do you see out of this?" Chuckling about it The whole time. I have an 86 that used to be slammed and it’s still pretty low now. The second time the guy didn’t say anything about it lol they only check mileage, vin, and lights in Florida

Same in Ohio. I have a had a few cars that I either bought out of state or salvage titles and the inspection was just vin and mileage.
In Minnesota they don't inspect it if it older than 6 years and are worth more than $9,000. I've been able to just register than without inspecting lol. Their inspection is littering checking for stolen parts and for fraud.

Georgia is the most strict state when it comes to inspections. There are so many criteria’s that it has to pass. I bought my dream truck out of state salvaged and I was happy but when I got it inspected it failed. We fixed everything that was wrong but every time we went back to get it inspected it failed. My truck failed it’s inspected 4 times. Now I’m having to sell my truck out of state cause we can’t get it to pass it’s inspection and since it don’t pass I can’t get the license plate. Literally every other state would pass the truck no problem. The inspector told me that even some of the vehicles that come from dealerships rebuilt still don’t pass that’s how strict Georgia’s rules are. Now I have to sell my dream truck and look for another :(

Update: The cops weren't hanging out, instead they were going undercover to see all the cars that were associated to the shop so they would know where exactly to look based on descriptions that come over the radio.

Yes, Always get the vehicles road worth certificate FIRST, before doing any modifications! Easy to do MODs after, so the car remains stock for it's inspection and then after that, Happy days ;)

Not to deflate Zach's enthusiasm about the police hanging out at the shop. But they were probably gathering information on the vehicles and their modifications to fine the drivers, impound the vehicles and to track where the vehicles were modified at a later date.
In 2016 i was the designated driver of a friends 700hp E30 M3, here in Sweden you need to have a car inspected each year (If it's 30years or older, every two year). This car hadn't been inspected for obvious reasons for 8 years, one night, we were 5 people in the car and it misfired like crazy.. we did some low rev pulls on the highway with a pc connected to the ecu to see what caused the misfire. A cop shows up in my mirrors, pulls me over, asks me about the car, knowing it's super illegal, no inspection done for the past 8 years (Knowingly it's not ever gonna pass an inspection). He asked a bunch about the car, I was straight with him and after like 15min of discussion about who's the owner and what so, he told me "Well, drive safely on your way home, and tell the owner to have it inspected before he drives it on public roads again, and be careful, cause I can imagine there's some power under the hood, cuz it has a turbo right?", at that moment all 5 of us in the car laughing like crazy and a buddy of mine (with the PC in his lap) said "We would never do such a thing, officer"
