  • As a board game nerd, I would like to point out something about the Mistborn deck building game that you may not have understood. Magic the gathering is a collectible card game and you are already aware of how that works. The Mistborn game here, is listed as a deck building game. That is a different game from magic. A deck building game has all the cards in the base game (expansions of course could be added) Each player starts with an identical small deck, and as they play the game they buy cards from a pool of cards that add to their deck. So you literally build the deck as you play. Maybe you already knew this, but it didn't come across in the video.

    • Yep 🤦🏻‍♀️😩 Agreed. Couldn't believe they showed Yennifer being willing to sacrifice Siri in order to get the ability to have children back. It's a ridiculous subplot! Everybody knows that Geralt & Yen adore Siri, and become like parents to her. Yennifer would die for that girl. It was such a slap in the fact for the show to have her desperate enough to see her killed. Ridiculous. I hated it. They had to reverse that bullsh*t immediately once season 3 started, because the entire fandom (both book readers & non), absolutely hated that dumb sh*t. I don't understand why TV show writers always insist on inserting their own fan fiction ideas into these stories. I get needing to make adjustments when adapting source material for a TV show... but this was such a departure from who the character of Yennifer was, that the decision didn't make a lick of sense! And then the dark side of the internet started blaming the downturn of the show on the fact that they had hired a Latina actress to play the character of Yennifer, and thats why the story sucked so bad. But UMM... the actress had done a phenomenal job in the role in the 1st season, and it wasn't her fault AT ALL that the writers did what they did. Just disgusting.

    • @@KabbalahSherry Yeah, it was so unnecessary. Have to love it when someone actually _wants_ to adapt the source material not twist it into something it never was. On the Yennefer front, Chalotra is English and Indian. And the issues I've seen people have with her is the casting director saying they wanted to cast people outside of the "traditional beauty standard", which people took to mean not following the Polish source material. A slap in the face for Sapkowski, Chalotra and the fans.

    @kahlenwillow7668@kahlenwillow766827 күн бұрын
    • it does, i think it operates on a license basis though. A library can only have access to certain files they've paid for and they can only lend out as many "copies" that they've paid for, same goes for digital audio books. i think the issue with internet archive might be them changing the file format? i'm not sure.

      @nisc2001@nisc200127 күн бұрын
    • @@nisc2001 I believe a big part of the problem is also that libraries are only able to "lease" licenses for ebooks. So instead of buying 20 copies of a book as a one-time expense and loaning them out forever, libraries have to pay for however many licenses they want of the ebook, and then continue paying year after year to maintain those ebooks as part of the library. You can see how that would snowball over time and force libraries to choose between maintaining a library archive or buying new books. It's a financial model that needlessly lines the pockets of publishers while bankrupting libraries, who should be able to purchase their ebooks to loan out the way they could with physical books

    • Apple taught the music industry how the technology provider can exert a dominant position over the content provider(s). Amazon learned this lesson, applying it to books with Kindle (and then Audible, and now Goodreads). The book publishers oligopoly are competing with Amazon’s monopoly. Guess who gets screwed: the public, the consumer, and the authors. Also, books aren’t software. Scanning a book into an EPUB format is not software. There is software that includes text and graphics (e.g. videogames) but that are quite obviously NOT BOOKS. Finally, the anti-ownership economy is fueling this as well: _leasing_ a book? Pro-capitalism or pro-civilization, pick one.

  • Big problem is how copyright is handled in the US. We allow these cultural works of art to remain under copyright for decades and then try to take down any attempts to bring it to the people. • My wife is currently in school for library science. Her class just discussed this case and ones like it. There is an even bigger issue at play. Since the library only has a license for access, many publishers are going back and literally changing history when their works fall out of favor with public perception. 1984 was even more prophetic than we know.

  • Isn't "Tales of the Shire" supposed to be something like Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley? This seems to want to be a cozy game that caters to one specific game experiece. Trying to put much more pressure of this game because it technically a Lord of the Rings game seems unfair when since it was announced this game was pretty clear about what it wants to be. Also the characters look great. It is a parculiar art style but everything seems pretty cohesive.

I could be wrong but I have this idea that the Narnia books remain quite childish and very short, while the potter books become more interesting and adult over time, which I feel makes them more enjoyable. • They looked at the views not the quality of the series. Its crazy coz Netflix ends most of their good series afters s3 (Stranger Things are an exception still that s2 was yuck filler) and trash series get lots of seasons. The writers were intrested in twisting what the witcher is about into what they want making a fanfiction not an adaptation. The source material was full of great things yet they wasted it to try to make it modern. Terrible decisions all around mostly on creative side of it.

As much as I want to see a Project Hail Mary adaptation, I'm still trying to figure out if it is a good idea. I don't want to spoil anything for people who haven't read it, it's just that I have concerns. The non-linear nature of the story for one. And I'm curious about how they are going to ...uh design a certain character. I mean it's still well off. But I approve of Ryan Gosling as Ryland.

  • The Mistborn deck building game looks really promising, given what little info they have released about it. Brotherwise games has done good work in the past. In case you didn't already know, Deck-Building is the INVERSE of games like MtG where your deck is pre-built. A deck-builder starts you off with a few cards (usually 10 super basic ones) and you build your deck up as you go. This MistBorn one appears to be accurately capturing the burning of metals through the game mechanisms, so I am looking forward to it.

  • Even if companies somewhat have a leg to stand on in terms of distribution and infringement when it comes to Archive providing unmitigated access to ebooks; digital preservation is extremely important and cannot, and _should_ not, be left as the sole responsibility of corporations, as they have no incentive to continue to provide access to preserved works if its ceases being profitable to do so. Companies that cease distribution of a work, for any reason, could potentially result in its permanent loss.

  • Even if the internet archive is deemed to be breeching copyright, they're still an invaluable source for everyone. Their digitization and lending of books is something that has done so much good in not just providing access to information, but it. And if what they've done is technically illegal under current copyright law, it's the law that needs to catch up. Not them. Also good reminder to everyone: pirating is morally correct! Do it! Artists would like to keep their lights on, so please also support artists, particularly small artists, financially if you can. But if you can't I promise every artist worth their shit would rather you experience their art.

    • That is quite untrue. I am an indie author, I know many other indie authors, and we hate book piracy. It is demoralizing, dehumanizing and sends the message we are less than. That we don't deserve to be compensated for our labour, our skill, and our product. Yes, we want readers, but we also want to pay our bills and recoup our costs. There is nothing "morally correct" about piracy. And in case you are wondering, I do distribute my books to libraries (and they actually pay authors). But have nothing against the Internet Archive, and wish them well.

Obviously. But there are millions of books, games, shows, movies, etc. that the official rights holder just doesn't make available in any way. Not in physical format, or in a digital version that you can buy, or that have been long out of print so you can only get a used copy at a ridiculous price. If the owner of something isn't actually giving you any way to buy the product, is only letting you rent it without actually owning it, if they turned their servers off, or they premiered something on streaming and then removed it six weeks later, or they aren't actually giving any of the profits to the creator, or stopped caring about it decades ago and haven't released it since the VHS or gameboy era, or its in the public domain, there's no reason to not get a copy off the net from the library.

It buys an official digital copy when it can and it loans it out *one user at a time* with a digital chain, they don't get to keep it, just like any library book. The only difference is the branch goes further than a city. It also scans and archives a ton of stuff that doesn't otherwise get saved or preserved anywhere else that has no licensor, publisher, owner, or sale value, that you literally can't get in any other way. There is no way to give anyone money to purchase it, if you don't pirate it, it is simply lost to history at no gain to anyone. Millions of articles, videos, and stories with no home or seller.

Brotherwise is a quality publisher - I especially love Boss Monster by them. It looks like standard deckbuilding mechanics - I recommend the Star Wars Deckbuilding Game if you want an affordable and straight forward example of the mechanism (2p only).

  • Very happy that the witcher is ending. After episode 5 of season 1 I knew it was doomed. But I still watched until the end of Season 2. As Someone who read the books and then played the games. It was extremely disappointing. Hopefully someone serious can try again in the future and just stick to the story line which would easily work without having to make ridiculous changes.

    • I dropped it after episode 3, that first season was pretty bad. Then the Strigga episode happened and I noped out. On top of reading the last wish a handful of times I've seen that play out in the opening cinematic for witcher 1. The monster looked better there, not like some weird xenomorphic botchling on top of screwing with the base story.

  • Honestly don’t get how some show runner’s approach is just to completely trash an IP. It like they just have a view that they know better? Fallout used the game backbone to weave a story and add new stuff, the boys are adapting the comics but doing changes within the cauldron of it. Use the backbone and bones of an IP and it makes it easier to weave stories. Even Kathlyn Kennedy regrets totally trashing SW EU couple years ago too. Saying how harder it was- use what you got like using Lego pieces of a Lego set.

  • If I may speculate wildly about the mistborn deckbuilding game. From looking at these three cards, it appears a card may be played using either it's left or it's right side. The left side being the effect, the right side being the vial. In order to use the left side of the card you must first play another card using it's right side that has a matching symbol. As we can see, each card has symbol representing a metal, iron, zinc, and pewter in this example. So if you had two ironpull cards, you'd play one card to get 1 iron element and whatever the second element in the vial is, and that would allow you to activate the Iron element affect, in this case 2 damage and the text effect. In the case of the other two cards we can see that being able to get more of a metal can allow for more powerful effects from the cards. Like with the middle card, 1 zinc gives you 3 gold, but 1 more zinc for a total of 2 gives you 2 more gold for a total of five. It also appears the vial of metal on this card gives 2 gold on its own, so some vials will have effects behind just granting metal. The top right of the card is obviously the cost in gold of adding the card to your deck. Beyond that we can see theirs obviously damage and healing in the game with the cross swords being damage and the green plus being healing. I think it'll either be like Star Realms or a co-op game because of this. Not a fan of sanderson, but I like use a card to play other cards mechanic, so I may check this one out. Just to repeat, this is all speculation from the picture so don't take it as gospel.

  • Having just watched the Tales of the Shire trailer I'm going to say it looks like it's trying to be a cozy game, in line with Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley. I like the overall painted looking art style, but the character design doesn't gell with me. Where as the environment looks stylized the character models look outdated. It's hard to tell if it's KZhead compression or not, but the character animations also looks a bit choppy, like they aren't running at 30 FPS. From what I can tell this is Weta Workshop's first video game so hopefully they stick the landing, but this doesn't look like it's going to wow the world.

  • Haven't looked into the mistborn game anymore than this video, but I would be willing to bet it is a game more akin to dominion or star realms rather than magic/hearthstone/etc... wherein a player builds their deck turn by turn throughout the course of the game, and therein lies the main gameplay loop. Rather than in something like magic where you build your deck you even play the game, and then face off against someone. The zinc card having a money icon is very common in deckbuilders where cards cost money, and we can see these 3 cards have a money cost in the top right corner as well. VERY excited to see if this is good, I love deckbuilders. hope this helps fill in your gap of knowledge! you should check out slay the spire (video game) if you haven't before :)

  • Hard to say a lot about the Mistborn game. At the most basic, you've got 3 resources in these types of games; combat(for poking your opponent), health(self explanatory), and money(for buying new cards for your deck. You draw a hand, play all the cards, do all the effects, then put them in a discard pile. When your draw deck is empty, shuffle your discard and go again. Continue until one player is dead. Lots of other text appears to be pretty common mechanics; removing cards from the buy row, 'eliminating' is probably akin to trashing(in this instance removing from the game). All pretty standard. The spicy stuff is going to be how those allomantic metal resources play into the game. The game designer behind it did Mystic Vale, which is pretty fun, so I've got high hopes.

  • soo. magic (mtg) is not a deckbuilder its a ccg(confusing i know.) this will be more like dominion or star realms where you start the game with a beck of bad cards and can "buy" better cards so your deck improves over the course of the game. so the "charm" card you showed is probably showing that you have 3 buying power when played or an extra 2 if another zinc card is played. the number in the top right will be how much a card costs to put in your deck. crushing blow probably dose 6 damage to your opponent and heals itself for 8 if you played 2 other pewter cards this turn. the thing that isn't basic deckbuilder on these cards is the viel in the lower right showing the metal pairing, charm has a cost there so that may be something interesting. good news is these games don't normally have random booster packs so it will either be all the cards come in one box or they might do something like one box has 4 or 8 metals and there is another box with the others and you either chose which metals to play with or mix them all together. if they do multiple boxes i'd expect them to be between $15 and $30 ish each if they do one big box will probably be under $60 not including postage.

  • Here's my (hot?) take on the Internet Archives case: authors should have to opt in to that. I'm all for public access to literature (and to be clear this is modern literature we're talking about). It's great - not as big a deal as it was before the internet, not a by a long shot, nobody is learning stuff in libraries anymore really, the internet is our new tutor - but still the idea is good, especially for those getting into real knowledge not just superficial knowledge. It only worked well in the past because there were no digital copies - before the internet this was a rock solid system for the betterment of society. But the internet has changed books. So I'm saying great - make this happen - but get author consent first, because it's basically charity. You don't go stealing someone's work and giving it away, that is in fact piracy, but if they are generous they'll provide it, and I'm pretty sure 75-90% of authors would support it for libraries. This is true especially for fiction, because it's not really education - I mean it is in a way - but mostly it's for entertainment. Just like authors will give out free copies or give out a free short story, they should be giving public library access on a per-title basis, and even better on time limit. Just like netflix and amazon have mainstream movies, not because they are just "loaning" them to us, but because there were agreements in the background to get that to happen. Then authors could even advertise that - like hey, my book is free this month at your local library! And that is a win for everyone involved.
