Drinking the Blood of Christ - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, on this Fifth Sunday of Lent, we hear one of the most pivotal passages in the Old Testament: Jeremiah 31:31. Jeremiah knew the long Israelite history of covenant and blood sacrifice, but he prophesies, “The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.” This passage will find its fulfillment about six centuries later at a Passover supper, where a young rabbi-the covenant in person-offers his own lifeblood for his people to drink.
Mass Readings:
Reading 1 - Jer 31:31-34
Psalm - 51:3-4, 12-13, 14-15
Reading 2 - Heb 5:7-9
Gospel - Jn 12:20-33

  • Bishop Barron, I will be baptized into the Catholic Church this Easter; thank you Bishop Barron because your videos have taught me so much about Catholicism, and have been playing such an important role in my faith journey and conversion. Besides, I really appreciate that your videos always have proper subtitles. God bless.

  • Stunned! So much history and deep meaning, all pointing to the Eucharist. Wow! Bishop, your words have honestly left me speechless. Thank you for bringing God's word together with your understanding and knowledge of history, to shine so much light on the most fundamental Truths of our dear Mother Church. Lots to think about and reflect on. God bless you 🙏🏼✝️

  • I am a Catholic from birth and was educated in Catholic grade, high school, college and professionsl school. I thought I was knowledgeable in my faith. Upon hearing the various homilies of Bishop Barron, I wonder if I know very much at all, and if, even at my advanced age, I need a seminary education, because by comparison, I seem to be woefully ignorant. Sincerest thanks to you Bishop Barron.

    • "The blood is the life" of the Covenant-sacrifice. However, in old covenants, sealed in animal blood, people were sternly warned NOT to drink the blood, though it could be, and was, splashed on them. No 😂question, it was real animal blood, not Red Dye Number Two. In the New Covenant? Can it be sealed in...red wine? How then could it full-fill and surpass the other covenants which should foreshadow it? And does it not make perfect sense, then, to drink the Blood that IS the Life of God made man that only God made man can make happen?

    • My husband & I, as well, are advanced in age, Catholic from birth, never fully comprehending our faith. Then thinking about some of the saints that died young, St. Terese of Lisieux & children such as Francisco & Jacinta Marto or Jose Sanchez Del Rio & it encourages me about what Bishop Barron said, the covenant is instilled in our hearts & the history of our church confirms that time & time again. So we can literally take heart in that & just keep growing in our faith, giving witness to one another. May we all be blessed with this fulfilling journey.

  • In your homilies, Bishop Barron, you make our faith come alive . These talks make clear why Roman Catholics could build great civilizations with all its intellectual and artistic grandeur. What a loss, that most of us lost that vision and sense of mission. I am very grateful that God gave you to us in these times of uncertainty. May God protect you always.

  • Here again is another masterful homily on the part of Bishop Barron: I feel truly enlightened about how the prophecy in Jeremiah 31 is fulfilled when Christ institutes the New Covenant in His Precious Blood. We are called to eat of His Body and drink of His Blood so that the New Covenant can truly be written on our hearts and that we can be forgiven of sins by the power of His sacrificial offering. And there's no better way to become more intimate with our Savior than partaking of His Body and Blood in the Eucharist.

  • Excellent. What's more, there were also sacrifices offered in the temple in an unbloody way. That is, they didn't appear to be like the animal sacrifices even though they were sacrifices. What was the offering? Bread and wine. The todah (Thanksgiving) sacrifice is an example of this, a "cereal offering" might be what you see in your Bibles, which means a grain offering, an offering of bread. Another example is the Bread of the Presence, found in Exodus 25:23-30, which was offered in the Tabernacle/Temple along with libations of wine. This sacrifice was offered every sabbath by Aaron and the priests (Leviticus 24) and was eaten by them. Jesus in the Eucharist is combining the sacrifices of old in his New Covenant sacrifice - offered in an unbloody way at the Last Supper and completed in a bloody way on the Cross - a new Bread of the Presence offered by the Apostles and the priests of the New Covenant.
