Ever since we saw the original reveal of Spore, our minds were blown. The graphics were amazing, you could choose to stay underwater or choose to move onto land, and it truly seemed like magic. What we actually got was less than what was promised. Ever since then, many have hoped for a sequel, remake, remaster, or spiritual successor but will any of these new games come close to what we really want? Let’s find out and welcome to new games you can play in 2024 that are like Spore. If you want to support the channel, buy games using this GOG referral link: af.gog.com/?as=1715648857 Thank you!

Spore left a legacy in gaming that even though it disappointed many simulation games fans in its day, we saw what was possible in evolution life sim god games. In 2024, there are many new video games that are trying to remake Spore and maybe some of them could make a new mark on the evolutionary simulator genre.

  • A lot of people were just interested in games like Spore and missed, so here's a list for you with some extras! There's so much more simulation too, check the playlist: kzhead.info/channel/PLYVqUDxY6COh7bkuJoBb1koNRX7mAX2yp.html

    • @@MrPitxardo That was first revealed just 6 months ago and it looks like it's in early development, and it's not labelled that it'll be early access or anything, so if it's going straight into full release I don't see it being a thing in 2024. The dev says it's too early to speculate on a release date too. I'll check back in on it next year.

  • I think a lot of evolution games dont put in the fact that your creature’s survivability should also depend if its adaptations fit into the environment. I’d love to see a game that allows your creature to adapt by building their nests in trees or caves or building a wall or hive made of mud or sticks around the nest. Or if it is a freezing planet, your creature needs thick fur or blubber to survive better.

  • Not so many Spore-likes aim to replicate the most important aspect of Spore, imo, that you can guide a simple cell to evolve into a galactic empire😢 ofc, it’s understandable considering the sheer amount of manpower you need to develop all the stages, but without such epic big-history feeling, it doesn’t really feel like a Spore successor…

  • Great video! I'm a bit late, my favorite part about spore was around the creature/tribal stage, I'm a bit bummed now that there wasn't any push for dinosaur things, since creatures in spore often resemble mammals, especially built in stuff. Another part was the super giant creatures, forget what they were called, but I was always kind of sad that the creature stage wasn't expanded into that direction or something similar.

  • There are two games, known as the evolution of species duology, that ask the question of "what if the cell stage never ended?" ?t also has a lot more than the cell stage. You don't have to do mate calls and actually find a mate to evolve. There is a level system that forces you to level up to unlock items.

  • I loved SPORE. Surprised you said the cell and creature stage were the favourites. I rather enjoyed the Space and Tribal stage the best. Even though Creature was a close third favourite. But nothing could beat the space stage for me. OK the "promised" version of it wasn't to be, yet it was complicated enough but not overtly to be GOOD. Just shame about all the rubbish with the codes and if you got a new machine you had to basically buy another SPORE game (or crack it). It became the most pirated game due to the code system on the CDs I think anyways.

I succeeded to make some pretty fun creatures by adding limbs and whatnot to those existing heroes. (also, the only healer of the game who was tremendeously useful was highly nerfed which killed the game for me) So I wanted Darkspore in spore with the mod aaaand it didn't really work... But Spore was always that fun game where you could create funny creatures (remember Robin Williams playing with the creature creator?) and after that... it was meeeeh... the civilization stage was too fast and quite stupid, not deep enough. The space age was on the other hand, too long ! You messed around within a few solar system and then it was time to start all over 'cause it was boring. (with some weird limitation)

  • I finished universim recently and got to say, while early stages were fun, once you get to the space stage its basically like a NG+ where you have your tree maxed out and can colonize a new planet to start all over again, and you can do this pretty much forever. But why would you? At that point there really isn't a point in playing anymore, space age isn't like traveling around the galaxy like it was in say spore where you could conquer the entire galaxy if you wanted but its more like jumping from one colony to the next where you get to redo everything all over again. So ultimately it was disappointing to me. Lets be honest, there probably won't be a game like Spore ever again, just because of the scope that game had. Various game devs are trying to copy parts of it, but never really go beyond and try to improve upon it. Honestly Spore itself needs a total remake, too bad that EA killed the studio

  • I'll be honest, the later stages in Spore were what made the game rather boring to me. I wish they would've focused on the creature stages. The tribal stage only makes me want to play an RTS like Age of empires, The civilization stage makes me want to play Civilization, and once you get into a space civilization makes me want to play Endless Space. It's like it's a bunch of half-cooked ideas that never feel like they're fully realized, only the cell and creature stage feel unique, and it would've been amazing if they just expanded on the creature component. They could've made huge ecosystems, and have the ability to grow your own giant creatures. In some way, I wish it was more like Evo: Search for Eden, but less grindy and fully exploring the capabilities of what the 3d environment could offer.

  • Spore got more boring and tedious the further you went into it, but it also had more to do. Its execution wasn’t the best, that was the issue. Cell stage had very little to do, but it went quickly so it didn’t matter. Creature stage had significantly more to do, but it was ultimately repetitive outside of the diversity of what you were facing and the random events. Creature stage, though I’d arguably the best stage in spore as past this stage things just start getting boring. Tribal stage wasn’t… bad, per se, just bare-bones. It was an RTS with survival aspects and different methods of said survival depending on the path you took but it was too easy and went too quick. All you had to do depending on your path was rush food, then rush weapons/instruments. You didn’t need to do anything else. Hell, you didn’t even really need to think about what weapons or instruments you gave your tribesmen, so long as you had an even mix of instruments you’d be fine and so long as you had enough weapons in general you’d be fine. The only time you faced a snag was with RNG regarding instruments, as if you picked the wrong village to go to they’d ask for instruments you don’t have. Civilisation stage is the first disappointing stage. Every stage beforehand is affected significantly by the choices you made in the stage before. Cell stage affected what you can eat in the creature stage and also gave you potential access to unique starting parts (even if most didn’t do anything). Creature stage’s parts carried over into the tribal stage, helping you (mostly) in combat. The only thing that affects the civilisation stage is your aggression from the creature and tribal stage, the way your creature is made doesn’t affect it at all, and in fact past this point you barely even see your creature anymore. Civilisation stage goes fully into the RTS stuff, with vehicles, weapons, bases, resources, etc. you don’t need most of it though. Spam cars with weapons then rush the closest bases, ezpz. Space stage is the most tedious and arguably the worst stage. Quests, trading, and the ultimate goal of reaching the center of the universe. All your choices leading up to the space stage don’t matter in the slightest. Doesn’t matter if you’re a carnivore, if you’re religious, if you’re aggressive, etc etc. the only thing you get from your choices at this point is a special ability and maybe some changed dialogue stuff. That’s it. You’ve still got the same goals, you can play any way you like, and the Grox are till your enemy (unless you do the work). Space stage isn’t even really that hard. You barely need to do the given quests, all you really need to do is trade spice. It’s a glorified merchant simulator. Mind you, you DO need to unlock things, via discovery and stuff but then well… Spice trading. Because you need sporebux to be able to get to the center of the universe which is the end of the game and the only goal you have (not mentioning that you can choose to continue afterwards, maybe work to defeat the Grox). So yeah, cell to creature is the best parts of the game with MAYBE Tribal too…

    • It did enter early access in 2021. I never said "actual game studio". And sure it's open source and has all sorts of plans, but that's not important. Why are you ignoring the 150 month dev time plan? You think it's lack of research, but you have lack of context. I'm talking about what it is right now because how important is it right now to talk about what Thrive will be in 2034? 2034! Seriously, why did you skip that very important bit of context? I make these lists every year, if Thrive gets better then I'll talk about the new stuff. But right now for 2024, because this is a 2024 list, what it is 10 years from now is not relevant for 2024. You don't trust me? Nah I don't trust you. You put words I never said in my mouth, lack all contextual relevance, and judge what you haven't seen based on your misunderstanding.

  • I have enjoyed Spore for many years. Looking forward to an even more better game hopefully.
