I have epilepsy and for some reason something that happens after I have a seizure is that I usually get upset about red. I have freaked out that there isn't anything red neat me, and I've also freaked out that I don't know what red is, and I've freaked out that there is red things around me. Human beings and brains and colours and how they interact are totally wild haha.
thats fascinating
Usually, red should be a more calming color, if you're exposed to it in a non-threatening way. For instance, red light. Lowest visible light on the color spectrum before infrared. Red light therapy is a real thing, that fights inflammation, helps regulate body processes, helps with sleep, etc. Blue = probably more calming because we think of air, water, breathing, and "Blues" music, which would more likely mellow someone out, than amp them up. It shouldn't come to us as any shock that we're easily tricked.
I hope Vsauce stays around for a long time. I love the science you do and wish I could be apart of it.

Okay so I'm totally not crying at the kids after they managed to get better. That kid saying he no longer has migraines, & now he's actually excited for high school, broke me. & if you think I'm being ridiculous, wait until you have a child of your own. My 3 year old son has had to go through so much since he was born, & the feeling of seeing your child happier & able to live the life they want is so powerful. This whole field of "curing children through placebo" deserves all the grants & all the Nobel prizes.

@@catdisc5304 considering that you deemed the dog good before going through the string makes the dog a 'good dog' by default, whereas FireyDeath4 just said 'A dog' without giving it a good or bad tag.
Perhaps. It depends on the morality of the converser, since morality and ethical alignment are entirely subjective and arbitrary to existence and it's significance. You could say that, no matter what, all dogs are good dogs, as long as you care about literally nothing else when it comes to situations normal humans would see as dire extremes. And if that were the case, I could assume that the goal of your existence is exclusively to ensure dogs never go extinct. Which they will, but that doesn't matter: the longest time is good enough.

As a drug addict, I really wish Michael would make a video about addiction, and the science of it. It'd possibly bring light to the fact that we don't really choose to be addicts.
i feel the 100% same way
Hey, just wanted to let you know that I hope you are well.
The first time you took the drug you chose to be an addict. Now stop playing the victim card and blaming other innocent people for telling you what you are.
@@thedislikebutton1907 You don't have the slightest clue what is going on in other people's lives. I myself am not an addict anymore but I used to be one a few years ago due to some major hardships in life and you of all people should know that we didn't choose for it to be this way. It takes a lot of self control to get over drug addiction and some people may or may not have the strength to overcome it. My life has improved significantly due to another person lending out their hand and making appreciate the positive aspects of life rather than the negative ones. We all are different individuals with different beliefs, experiences, strength, weakness, etc. at the end of the day, even I dislike a situation where a person suffering with addiction just give up on any hope of overcoming it. But instead of making light of someone going through a difficult situation we could help them get better and it is the least thing we could do. Have a nice day :)
@@nezukochan471 Staying addicted isn't an easy choice to avoid making, but initiating the addicting behavior is, you choose to do drugs for the first time you choose to drink you choose to overeat you choose to play video games you choose whatever, the first time doing it you choose it, and that's what dislike's saying. You can get over an addiction, with a metric fuckton of effort, you CAN choose to not be an addict anymore, it's just hard as hell. But absolving others of their blame for their own addiction is not going to help, they fucked up, and they're dealing with the consequences, telling them that they never fucked up'll just keep them from putting in the effort to get better. People don't get better by being told what they wanna hear they get better through taking earnest criticism.

I rlly dunno if anyone has made an explanation on the "how chinese ppl associate with red" topic but in short there was a legend about a certain monster called "年" (which, I guess you can translate it directly into "year") that basically hunts people especially small children during New Year. People find out that it is scared of the color red, so they just put red things everywhere like the lantern, envelopes nd firecrackers stuff like that (it's also afraid of loud noises) and that protected people from the monster by scaring it away, since then the color red is associated with luck and joy and almost some sort of safety in chinese culture (especially to the older generation who directly absorbed this very big part of our cultural tradition)
This is great stuff. Not sure why some people focus on the "deception" aspect given that the researchers are up front with what they are doing. And the fact there are positive impacts on lives of the young people, not a bad outcome. Hope they are still doing well.

I think one of the reasons red is so salient and attention grabbing also has to do with our physiology. We only have RGB cones in our eyes, but blue is so predominantly the sky, and green predominantly related to grass/foliage, which leaves red as the only remaining ‘pure’ color to use that is not overly stimulated in our environment.
You made this comment 2 years ago, just wanted you to know you made someone just go "OHH that's so smart!"
Innit
I'm so glad he made this, it's been such a powerful revelation - especially the part where he explains why the experiments in earlier Mind Field episodes didn't produce the most 'sensational for TV' results; it's truly incredible to see now the work he's put behind the series considering he started out just as a KZheadr and now he's actually highlighting fascinating studies into fields like placebo that researchers don't want to pursue, I mean the man has already drastically improved the quality of life for some of those kids and their families by extension. I remember being the subject of the oldest trick in the book I was 9 years old or so, my late father came home early and i was watching tv instead of studying, so i did the usual, play asleep. He came into the room, i can hear him looking at me, yes, i can hear his looks, i was scared shitless, but he was the kinda man that would make you laugh and fill you with love, but at the same time fill you with fear if you do something wrong. So he was looking at me and spoke to my brother, saying "he is not asleep, he keeps his mouth open when he sleeps", and you guessed it, i slowly opened my mouth thinking that they wont notice somehow if i do it slowly enough, but instead i hear him burst with laughter. A good memory. May Allah have mercy on his soul. He was the greatest father anyone could have wished for.
I think the biggest issue people have with placebo and hypnotic type of stuff is; that they feel embarrassed and humiliated when they find out it was their own brain. Alot of people dont know just how powerful our own brains are.
That would be more likely if it was with malicious intent but honestly most people would laugh it off or prefer not to know

It's important to relax the kids, sneezing can be a thought influencing act, creating a small distress feeling. I don't think of it as lying, as keeping the kids as cool as tiny cucumbers. Pretty good psychology behind every action he takes from my point of view.
@@dreugh424 "you're going to feel a little pressure"
@@dreugh424 if you anticipate pain you will feel it more painful. There's a Mind Field episode on that as well. So doctor could say "It won't hurt at all, if you believe me" and he actually won't be lying. And if you still feel pain he could parry with honest "well, that means you didn't believe me enough".

As for the experiment with the posters of death, I believe they should have looked for the questions to polarize the participants number value because they would have more conviction in their decisions. Ergo the number values should be closer to 1 or 7

44:00 ok I'll reveal it then lmfao. It's tiny piece of pencil lead temporarily attached under his right thumbnail. The sleight of hand involved is loading/unloading the pencil lead (uncomplicated when the only person you need to fool doesn't know they're involved in a magic routine), and making sure you keep your hand moving instead of statically holding the clipboard in the same place the number was written.
Yoo, I didn’t know those exact details but that’s pretty much what I guessed
Wow. That sounds awfully complicated! I don't think the average person is cut out to be a magician 🤣
i see you just HAD to stretch it past 10 minutes. just came back 5 months later. had no idea this whole thread happened here until i came to rewatch this.
As someone with a higher than average IQ, education level and extreme anxiety I can attest that one can diminish the effect of drugs by not believing they work. It has happened to me. Also it is quite sad that I would never be able to heal with this method. I have a constant pain on my intestine, like having a big ball pushing outwards my body. I have visited doctors, surgeons, specialists. No one had done something to fix that pain, I have learned to live with it now after years of trying to fix it. Constant freaking pain. Suicide lurked my mind because of it. But once u went to a doctor that told me it was something that could be easily cured and gave me some pills. Magically after a few minutes the pain went away. It turns out that my anxiety was collecting itself in my instestine and the belief that I had a medicine that would work was enough to make be feel better. Of course the pain came back weeks later. The only solution I figured out, because none of the dozens of specialists that I consulted thought about this, was to take anxiety medicine. And like magic again, the pain went away and this time for a longer time. As long as I take the medicine I don't have the pain. Turns out my anxiety collects itself in my intestine and jaw. So, for those with "IBS" I suggest you go to a psychiatrist. No f'ing gastrologist Will never EVER think on referring you to a psychiatrist unless you present clear signs of mental issues. They will most likely give you medicine for the pain, but won't fix the root of the problem. This was mind blowing to me. How doctors don't view medicine or health with a holistic approach, thinking outside their field. I also saw this with dentists. They don't understand how patients don't brush their teeth when it is pretty obvious is because of depression. And because doctors are just humans that know medicine there are lots of dumb dumbs that can't connect 1 with 2. Some might but majority won't. It was infuriating to hear them say "we don't know what's wrong with you, you don't show any damage in the images". So frustrating. Hopefully AI will get rid of these ignorant issues soon.
Damn Vsauce, you guys are making the other youtube channels look cheap. This was really well put together, from thevery beginning. Thanks!
"League of Legends is basically like mario meets checkers." No wonder he got dumpstered by bronzies.
It was a joke lol
League of legends was the absolute WORST choice for this experiment. They should have had him play something non competitive and actually explorative of 3d spaces. They should have given him portal to play
@Thomas Johnson I bet the decision was made by someone on the esports team. Michael probably asked a producer for a suggestion and the producer probably asked some moron on the esports team who has spent the last 6 years of their life playing league every single day and had only spent like 5 hours on video games other than league. To that esports player, league is probably the best test of skill they can think of. They probably didn't think anything about exploring a space.

@@Mit852 Portal doesn't have that much replayability tho. So while I agree, that would require him to go to a new game pretty quickly.
Placebos are amazing, the only time I know of experiencing one was a year or so ago. I had recently started playing trumpet, and lost one of mouthpieces. My dad found says mouthpiece after a few months, and I thought it was smaller than my current one (smaller mouthpieces make higher notes easier.) I had been having trouble with high notes for a while, but as soon as I used that mouthpiece, I was able to play multiple notes higher. It wasn't until a month or two later that I finally realized the mouthpiece was exactly the same size as my other one, and I had placeboed myself.
This has probably jappened to me without me noticing, although it has happened to my friends alot and it's sort of funny haha.
Yeah this is totally a thing. Most people refer to is as psyching yourself out (if it is a negative) or being "in the zone" when it is a positive. It isnt that hard to relate to and then apply it to medical issues, etc. As much as I hate pseudo sciencey things, I also personally know many people that have been legitimately helped by them because of placebo, so it is hard for to criticize things like that.
In this case I don't know if really is a placebo effect. I used to play the french horn and something similar happened to me. The mouth piece that I lost were larger than the new one and it should be easier to reach high notes. But when I found my old one, it was easier. There where two important factors: the old one was better fabricated, was a Paxman, and my muscles were more used to it. Maybe if I trained more with the new one maybe this wouldn't be the case anymore.
Crazy thing about actualizing placebos sometimes is that you can just call that a coincidence and was because certain timing in your life for all different reasons. Like you could have just lost a touch and got better at playing the high notes again after positive alignments in ur life
Your embouchure probably had also improved.
3:00 That's the fucking witch cry from left 4 dead I thought I was going insane and was just hearing it in my head 💀
For the neuroscience students who were fooled the “magic trick” is that he had something attacked to his finger that let him scribble the number while they tell it to him. He practiced writing with one finger (probably on the side of his finger) and the awful handwriting demonstrates this is likely the case.
