[PG] In episode two, we learn about Carl Völkner, the German-born missionary Mokomoko was wrongfully accused of murdering.
In 1861, Carl Völkner was sent to New Zealand by the North German Missionary Society and took charge of the church mission station in the Bay of Plenty town of Ōpōtiki.
Initially welcomed by the local Te Whakatōhea tribe, Volkner built a church and a school for the mission station with the support of Governor George Grey, who at that time was attempting to defeat Māori fighters in the Land Wars.
Völkner was a political as well as a religious figure and instead of building his relationship with the tribe, wrote to Governor Grey informing him of an alliance between local Māori and a Catholic priest.
Völkner's actions caused people in Ōpōtiki to question his motives and they started to wonder if he was a spy for the British government.
Once, when Völkner travelled to Auckland, he was warned by members of Te Whakatōhea not to return to Ōpōtiki because of the rumours.
Ignoring the warning, Völkner returned to the Bay of Plenty and was apprehended by the Māori Christian group Pai Mārire.
Taken prisoner and held in a house, Völkner was hanged from a willow tree near the church the following day.
Afterwards, he was taken down and decapitated before his eyes were gouged out and swallowed by Pai Mārire leader Kereopa Te Rau.
Made with the support of Te Māngai Pāho.

  • Is there anything in our countries past as insidious as the pretense of "godliness" and the false pedestal of religion? On top of the conscious and calculated theft of land, these "religious envoys" were pure and utter evil personified.

  • 2:16 The British Historian Peter Lineham, neglected to mention that Victoria, the Queen of England. After her husband Prince Albert had died. She hooked up with this Scottish grub, John Brown, and probably had more children. So yeah, if you call that overwhelmed with grief. Mate! Looks to me, that Queen Victoria, was living it up in Castle's in the expense of others with all that loot from Greece, India, Australia, Africa and NZ, China, [ etc ]. You would think with all the trillions of dollars the British stole, they would at least have a decent country with decent people, indeed.

    • Not just Maori are peeved about what happened. Today the landgrab continues by man made inflation until we cannot breathe any longer. Worked all our lives for those leeches, got finally free of mortgages and bang.... inflation puts all back into financial dependence. 😢 they're laughing all the way and we sweat yet again. It's their game. 😮

  • This is why pakeha need to understand their view of why they make legislation. It still is not honourable definition to co exist with te tiriti o Waitangi. Change your system now, pakeha we been housing your livelihood to provide you safety of the disrespect that keeps you guys contradictory mindset. We are whole beings Māori who have rebirthed our historical claim from instinct and the remaining knowledge of who we are. You buried your people in Māori soil, pay your dues.

  • The Australian Aboriginals have it right ( in the end the land claims us all) one cannot claim the unclaimable. World history has shown us nothing remains static, movement is essential albeit uncomfortable for the so called losers in the power game. So be it.

  • we know the history you cant change that, its sad really on how it was done, colonization is always about land, resources and the growth of the commonwealth, regardless of who is in the way, demoralize people of its culture, home, away of life you will achieve that, people say Maori and Pakeha should live together, and we should, in my opinion the issue today is not only about the loss of land, its about understanding the value for what it is, if you have a connection to the land water air and its wildlife you'll understand, im sure most do, some only see value when you put a $ sign in front of it, land is worth more in its natural state instead of concrete, but its happened, how do we exist as one, we accept the past we preserve our cultures, we acknowledge the mistakes we acknowledge the land wars and the people who fought and died, we accept our history and celebrate it, Waitangi doesn't really do that, well, doesn't really move forward its stagnant so to speak, most Maori and Pakeha New Zealanders do try, a lot dont, the growth of the economy and the well-being of its people is what we should achieve in this day and age, population growth is much different now than it was then.
