Who is watching this in 2024?
Unforgetable
I recently rediscovered it and it's my current earworm 🎶❤️
Why hadn't I heard this when it came out in the mid 90s? It is gorgeous! I hope it returns with many cover versions in 2024 ❤❤❤
The best British entry EVER.
I am just digging through older Eurovision videos. This song is amazing compared to some of the trash that now passes for "music" in 2024.
When I was a child in 1997, I never understood how we won with this song. Now as an adult.. now I understand why we won. The songs fucking amazing. What a voice
Tony Blair had just won an election, which meant every everyone liked us.
Magnificent.
Also a time without Tories.
@@jason_a_smith_gb Labour won the election two days before this performance…
See my comments above. That's why UK was allowed to win. Paving way to the WAR!!
"Well, if that doesn't win, we might as well pack up the tents and go home." - Sir Terry.
In 1997 it won because back in those days it was about the best song winning, in 2022 its all about virtue signalling gesture politics. Sam Ryder should have won this year as it was easily the UK's best entry since Katrina although if you ask me this song is still considerably better.
@@adamknight7904 we will win next year as long as someone bombs us
Say that again to the faces of the kids dancing to Stefania in bomb shelters in Kyiv. Music is a powerful thing, and there’s a whole world out there
What a legend Sir Terry was R.I.P sir Terry
@@adamknight7904 even though I really liked Ukraine's song and am fine with it winning..yeah, it probably wouldn't have won without the war. Still, the overwhelming majority of the televote is what propelled it to victory.
The times when really good song won the eurovision song contest...
The last eurovision winner with a live orchestra
Not quite, the 1998 Eurovision from the UK was the last with a live orchestra.
you didn't have to have an orchestra and Israel, the winner, chose not to have one.
@@richardevans3680 UK wasn't winner in 1998
@@alexliverpyl5583 Yes I know.
Bring back the orchestra! They don't need to perform each song, just the theme music like you would at the Oscars.
No gimmicks, no dancers, just a damn good song.
a heavenly good song
That his how you perform a winning song, even now I get a little emotional as was and still is a memorable song Katrina you did the UK proud.
kzhead.info/sun/hcOxna6bnmOfdY0/bejne.html - when it won in 2020 too, despite the pandemic...
Katrina's voice was truly stunning in this. Perfectly synced vibrato and extremely powerful. Her lovely smile, live orchestra and fantastic song. This performance could never have failed to win.
..it was like a Shinkansen. Came, perfect speed, everybody was taken by it, and there you are, winners were created.
Without question the daddy of all Eurovision .that has stood the test of time ,with a beautiful message sung to perfection....Katrina & Waves 1st...the rest now where...just magic
You'r right. 😢
When the UK takes Eurovision seriously they can strike absolute gold, instead of sending the same generic or outdated dross for the last decade.
Yes - you're right The Beatles / The Who / The Rolling Stones / Oasis / Take That The UK has nothing to contribute to pop music...
@@usualsuspect7484 Our pop groups are the most successful in the entire world 🙂 One Direction and Little Mix. Better than USA pop music, made more 💰.
@@usualsuspect7484 they were talking about Eurovision smart arse.
Yes you got it 100%
Looks as if things could be changing in 2022.... currently 3rd in the odds with 1 week to go
I get goosebumps every time I watch this performance. It is one of the best Eurovision performances of all time! With love from Ukraine. And thank you very much for your support!!! 🇬🇧 ❤ 🇺🇦
Love from the UK back to you in Ukraine!
❤
If there could be a world anthem, I'd choose this.
A good song but personally I would choose Celebrate The World by Womack and Womack.
Me too
Good one💞 (My own favorite 'anthem of the world' is 🎶Crockett's Theme - Jan Hammer🎵😉😌🌌🌟🍀🛡
That's so sweet. We should have a anthem 😊
To be fair, when Eurovision was cancelled in 2020, and they had that weird show, this was THE anthemic song everybody knew.
Best UK entry ever, can’t see that performance being beaten.
Absolutely!
Not in the same league as Bucks Fizz
No Brotherhood of Man were better than Cathrina
@@wargreymonandi2342 Sandie Shaw was better. Your first winner for Christ sake.
Not with it now being so political
24 years after, this song would win the Eurovision
No it wouldn't! It's now a political movement not a song contest. The UK is the highest contributer to Eurovision. It creates millions of jobs in the UK... wait a minute....it brings millions to the British economy hang on- May be not....Let's get rid of it,yes.
@@nearlyretired7005 and the scandal runs deep. Money that we give to broadcasters like fox cnn.. It needs exposing
In 1997 as a child I never understood how we won with this song.. now as an adult.. now I understand. The song is fucking amazing
21 years ago.. i remember it as if it was yesterday... i liked the song..
@@nearlyretired7005 that's not True. Don't be a sore loser. It wasn't politic, UK was average so a lot of people forgot It. Didn't deserve zero points tho but wasn't amazing. UK have to bring masterpiece like this one to win ^^
Hey, I'm just over here with full goosebumps - just incredible! 0:32 tambourine lady's face on the right 0:47 nervous/excited laugh 1:17 guitar mans face 1:26 Just wow! 1:49 "woah!" - pure joy 2:05 flutey thing 2:08 the trumpet 🎺 - it totally gets me! 2:46 final chorus 💖😭 Nailed it Katrina. Just love it! I was 15 in 1997 and didn't think anything of this. Now I can fully appreciate how wonderful this song is. Pure goosebumps.
best song in eurovision EVER! hands down!
And brought back again in 2020 for the pandemic Contest - all the contestants sung this divinely-inspired song wondrously well and with true motivation and joy, and all (except Belgium) WON! The Holy Spirit won too. Just take a look --- kzhead.info/sun/hcOxna6bnmOfdY0/bejne.html 2024 was not like that...
I'm here after our atrocious entry this year. Now I feel better.
Say what you want, but that's a great live vocal performance.
Yes. It's a really great live vocal performance. Katrina nailed it that evening. And together with her backingsingers and the musicans from the RTE Orchestra they created a moment of magic. Unfortunatly live interaction between musicians and vocalists is not longer allowed in the contest today (since they only allow prerecorded music nowadays )
@@escLIVEmusic1 Do you mean the backing music has to be prerecorded?
@@thedistractedbaker7401 Yes, it's a sad story. Since 1999 there have been no live music in Eurovison, apart from the vocals. Those acts which includs instrumentalist, bands etc. nowadys just mime playing their instruments.
Agreeee
One of the really beautiful ESC winning songs. Wonderful voice, great melody. I am walking on sunshine every time I hear it.
She absolutely smashed it
So e deserved winner❤still love this, greetings from Italy🇮🇹
the flutes and trumpets at 2:04 still give me chills till now.. the best performance..
Best UK entry ever, still love it to this day 🇬🇧❤🇬🇧
This excellent song would go to another level with the visuals and staging we have today , I'd love to have seen her perform this in Liverpool earlier this year!
such a wholesome song
This is my favourite winner of all time. The best song ever 🥰
I was serving aboard a merchant vessel going around the North Sea when this was shown. We had to have someone go up and re-direct the antenna so we wouldn't miss the voting. Was worth the effort!
After 2020 version, but this was great, deserve won!
Back in the days when Eurovision song contest actually was a song contest and not a dance contest. One of the best winners of ESC.
where do the years go 1997 I was 9 remember watching this with mum dad and brothers rip mam xx
That trumpet in 02:08 and 02:11 still gives me chills even after 22 years!!!
It's a little touch, along with the flute that you really notice is missing from the studio version but makes such a difference. There's a live orchestra version of Charlotte Perrelli's Hero that is exactly the same: kzhead.info/sun/apSjhcZwrp98pY0/bejne.html
Totally agree. You just KNOW it's coming when you listen to it and even that gives me goosebumps. :-D
why?
@@marcelleratafia2360 because you dont have good taste in music
Lol, I scrolled to this comment like 1 second before that trumpet 😂
This is my favourite Eurovision song from the United Kingdom and one of my favourite Eurovision winners of all time!
This should be our Humanity Anthem in these difficult times… Musically the orchestra, the message… her voice… I even sung the song in my car and cried so many times… It’s such a POWERFUL anthem and I’m proud to sing and listen to it… 23 years later… let love shine a light in every corner of our hearts. Be grateful we still have a life to live and live. Love you all!
The last winner with live orchestra. AMAZING song, I'm sure even now this song could win
Vladyslav Kovalénko There was still an orcherstra in '98, but in '99 they removed it because they don't have enough money for that. I miss the orchestra, it brings magic on a Eurovision song. :'(
Diva was performed without orchestra :/ so it remains the last
Vladyslav Kovalénko Oh, is that so? I guess I still need to learn more about ESC. Thanks. :)
it's OK, you were almost right, just 98 had some performances with orchestra and some without. Israel refused to use the orchestra
...and the conducter plays now the keyboards for Deep Purple.
Those were the times when music was what mattered. One of the best winning songs ever. Astonishing performance! Let's make Eurovision great again!
A truly wonderful song, a wonderful performance and wonderfully orchestrated 🙂
It's just one of those songs - you from the beginning knows will win❤🥰❤
Love for everybody. United against coronavirus. Much love from Spain. 🇪🇸💪🏻
A time when there was a beautiful magic and innocence in the ordinary day life, manifested in meaningful, beautiful music like this. Nearly 25 years later through the progression of technology and we have lost this simplicity and connection with one another. Very sad to see humanity now having lived through brighter days like these
who after 2020 tribute
that was not a song but rather a typhoon..I still remember me and my parents discussing ''Here we have a winner''
Loved it straight away and still got shivers hearing it.x👏

our best moement in Eurovision, to date, It wont be beaten x stay safe everyone xx
Most are forgetting Katrina and the waves were a legit band long before ESC.
@@adrianpallis4568 how many established singers did we use. Michael Ball, sonya cliff Richard. Your point being. Ireland used same singer for years

Really appropriate for these troubled, unpredictable times
Bring back that orchestra!!!!!
Knew this was the winner within a minute of hearing it. That melody. Without question the last great Eurovision song.
The BEST Eurovision song ever!
Best UK entry best ever debatable
Sandie Shaw: puppet on a string. Also good
Nahh best song ever is Sound of Silence from Dami Im
It is beautiful
Without any shadow of a doubt the all-time best Eurovision song winner.
No stupid outfits, no lightshows that distract you from the performance, but just an amazing musical performance of a beautiful song 😍 🙌 👏
This and sam ryder our best 2 entries in the last 27 years by a mile.
They can sing which is unusual for us at Eurovision
When Eurovision peaked !
Omg! I remember watching this as a kid in Switzerland. She was the one my mom hoped would win😊
This is a timeless classic with a timeless magic that has stood the test of time and is still very relevant today. 2.12.21
25 years ago the UK won with this song and it will be the last time we ever win it.
Im here after they announced Europe Shine a Light, lets hope that you will perform during this show.
Hopefully they will ask her to do it don't want to see the song butcherd by some wannabe
@Srijan ESC really???
They will, and all countries who are active and associated members of the EBU will broadcast the Eurovision Europe Shine The Light including Kazakhstan 🇰🇿
THEY PERFORM IN A BETTER WAY, 40 COUNTRIES AND SHE WAS EPIC
They had every 2020 act sing this song (edit: except Belgium)
A shout for Don Airey. He was the conductor/arranger on the night and was responsible for all the sublime "extra bits" that are sorely missing in the studio version. Wikipedia is your friend here - I was gobsmacked when I read how many (and which) bands he has performed with!
The deep purple family is a winner here too!
@@michaellorentzen1051 Sadly good as Don is, he always looks second rate for those of us who experienced Purple with the sublime Jon Lord.
27 then, 53 now. And still it's a song that will always stay with me..
26 Years!
still remember watching this with my parents when it won. It was (and still is) one of our favourites
One of the best winners ❤❤❤🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 I can't help myself but I must to listen to this song when I am in UK so right now ❤❤❤🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
We never knew this song would mean a lot that we are in struggle in the world now
Really brilliant song .powerful voice
Fantastic winner,a classic!! Gotta say the stage is freakin cool especially for the 90’s🙌🏻
Simply the best winner in the history of the Contest. I had the honour to be there on the night in the Point Theatre, cheering Katrina on. Great memories.
In 1997 still old point counting method was used. And it was almost 400 points. Never before, never after.
Great great song !!!! With love from Albania, Luan's motherland (Gangs of London) ❤️
For me one of the greatest eurovision songs absolutely great harmonies and the backing singers was immense, kimberley, what a fantastic singer.
Katrina Leskanich sings it, Rew wrote it.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 not only that, Kimberley Rew is actually a man!
Rew's the dude with the guitar. (EDIT: NO HE'S NOT - SEE BELOW)
The bass guitar.
@@Bizz55 Turns out it's none of them - he didn't perform on the night. Vincent de la Cruz is on guitar, Phil Nicholl is on bass.
This is good stuff. A true Eurovision anthem.
Old good days of Eurovision! Best song ever and biggest win ever (81% points receive from available points 227 out of 276)!
Thank you very much for that great remark!
Way to go out cause we not won since
You know each country can’t vote itself so 23*12=276 available.
I gave you the official page of Eurovision my friend. So 24!
A hole in one well said no1 best ever song in the Eurovision !
Absolutely AMAZING song! I get so so emotional listening to it. I'm 33 now and had just started high school, this winning was such a big deal. What a truly golden and innocent age; both in Eurovision and in the state of this country/world now. I would give ANYTHING to go back to those times.
Wow, I felt this comment. I agree with every word. Thank god we had the 90s I was only a small kid but so glad I had some experience of it.
Who is watching this in 2021?
2020 and still one of the best winner entries!
Totally deserved winner and a real anthem to World Peace, something we need in early 2022 as much as ever. Incredible vocal performance from Katrina. It's strange that a group that, to be honest, never really made it as a _massive_ act nonetheless had two monster hits: "Love Shine A Light" and 12 years previously, "Walking On Sunshine". You can fluke a single hit, but if you can put out two songs like that in a career, regardless of other success, there's quality there.
it is a sign of geniouses. In this Katrina ( and the Waves) is a genius.
The last time UK won the Eurovision Song Contest.
And will ever be
So far!
@@gazowenowen250 I doubt that. The UK will win again.
This was 19 days before my sister was born and she’ll be 24 this year. That’s how old the last UK victory is.
one of the best uk winners
There are some Eurovision songs that you can’t imagine being second or third, they just feel like winning songs. This is definitely one of them .
There are Eurovision winner songs that are typical of their time - and then there are winning songs that still sound great today. Like this one.
Brothers and sisters, I love this song!!!!! From Sweden to the UK, Love shine a light 🕯❤️🤍💙💛💙 🇸🇪❤️🇬🇧
Funny how we never win the actual contest anynore. But Europe chooses this great song to promote eurovision 2020. Ironic and highly amusing
I agree
Cuz u don’t send good songs anymore
i still get tearful when I watch this performnce. The combination of the message and that it was our last win. We came close with Sam in 2022. We can get back on top one year soon. Apart from 2002, 2009, 2017. 2022 & 2023(ish) this was the last time I was proud of our entry.
2014 and 1998 were also good!
Best live winner ever!
Man, that brief trumpet parts are the best thing
Live music and vocal is perfect
A great winner. In my top 10 best ever Eurovision songs.
such a "feel good" song, my favorite Eurovision entry of all times
By far the greatest Eurovision song of all time, in my ears.
Yeah no.
Omg i was 9 years old thats the last time we won it .....
You see, UK? It's not politics! Just send songs as good as this with performers as strong as Katrina and you can totally win again! This is one of my favorite Eurovision entries ever and no other British entry comes close. Brilliant song and performance and quite possibly the best orchestral arrangement of any song (Hemel en aarde from the following year is also fantastically-arranged). Also, it was funny seeing Katrina come back to give the British points in 2017 and one of the co-hosts remarked that they were born that year. She looked somewhat bemused. (And then the UK, wisely, gave 12 to Portugal, a testament to how things can change in twenty years: the UK and Ireland struggling for results while Portugal, who got zero points the year Katrina won, walked away with the biggest victory ever seen up to that point - the very achievement Katrina did back in '97!)
Das war noch Musik.
We need this song more than ever in this world.
The BEST song winner of United Kingdom, in Eurovisión..From Spain.
What a great performance Katrina did us proud.
Proof that United Kingdom can send a perfect songs unlike what they've sent last years.
They have had decent songs, They cant stop eastern europe from cheating and voting for each other.
@@fkthelefties i agree but all countries do the same. Uk gives Ireland, Scandinavian countries give one each other .
It's more to do with politics I think. The UK have become unpopular in the EU.Things can only get worse with BREXIT I feel
Sorry but we could put up Adel, Ed Sheeran, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, The Rolling Stones or any one in the current U.K. top 40 to represent the U.K. and we would still lose as no one in Eurovision likes the U.K. anymore
@@CricketEngland apparently they liked us this year 🤷🏼♀️😂
Just the kind of song we all need right now. What a powerful song.
This soulful classic truly deserves to be the anthem for World Peace ✌
They paid their dues as touring and recording musicians for many years leading up to this spectacular moment. Most of the time I watch and enjoy this without getting emotional but sometimes.....there's a few tears owing to the majesty of the performance and the sentiment in the song. More frequently, it gives me goose bumps because it is one of the best performances I will ever see and I love it every time I hear it. I saw KATW twice, once in 1988 and then in 1995, with both performances extremely polished. It came as no surprise that they were able to pull this off so brilliantly to walk away with the crown as the highest scoring act of all time ( I don't know if that has changed as I haven't watched the contest for over 15 years). I hope the band read the comments about them on You Tube so they know how much their fan base appreciates them, as I for one, believe they are one of the most unsung and underrated bands Britain has seen. I am glad to be among those who have been lucky enough to know the value of their music since the mid eighties.
The record has been broken 4 times by now. I really recommend you get back in the contest, as there's a surprising amount of quality music in it :)
Loved it then ,and still do in 2019 👍😇🙋
In those days the quality of song writing was better. Nowadays the contest seems to be about the staging, suspect costume and wind machines! All very distracting! The contest would be better if the number of entries in the final was restricted to 10 or 12 then each of those entries performed twice with two different arrangements! That way it's all about the song!
Wonderful then, wonderful now. Been struggling with mental health issues for a few months and been feeling pretty horrific. This song genuinely makes me feel happy.
I agree, the song and live performance, was wonderful back then, and is still wonderful now; I looked for this song today, because this is my wish for 2023, and also makes me feel happy, such a high vibe song, all the best for 2023, and hope this message finds you well, love shine a light to you, from Scotland.
