CBA, DBA, EBA, WHICH VERSION OF THE NISSAN R35 GTR SHOULD YOU GET AND HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT
At least once a week there is someone asking whether they should get a CBA or save up for a DBA. There always seems to be someone responding with false information based on something they read from someone else. In this video I'm going to explain the differences between the CBA, DBA and EBA platforms in the R35 GTR.

I love them all. Previous CBA owner and now an EBA owner.
This was definitely the video I've been looking for. I'm thinking about a GTR wasn't sure which one was a good fit for me. I love the looks of the EBA but the price is crazy right now, and CBA'S I've found have way too many miles. DBA'S are kinda right in the middle of good to OK prices and miles but still maybe out my range. Definitely gonna keep looking but this helped tremendously. Thanks for the info.
Awesome. Glad I could help
Careful cba has $20,000 transmission problem
What did you end up getting!
Excellent stuff! Literally answered almost every question I had, as I looking for a R35

I can sense the passion you have for this topic, and it's contagious!
Thank you
Thank you! Most informational video ever made in the history of the GT-R. period.
Hi Archer - great video chap with some brilliant information and delivered very simply so thank you.
Awesome, glad it helped and thank you
I appreciate the video and for putting good GT-R info out to the community. The DBA (2015+) made a huge difference to how the car drives. It really feels like a "Grand Tourer" now. Speaking of now, this is a horrible time to buy a GT-R. Prices have gone up $20k+ this year and with the last R35 model year upon us, I see it continuing to rise.
Thank you. Also I've been seeing the prices come down on R35s recently, but that probably more due to the lessening of the chip shortage. I figured they drop, then probably go back up in a few months.
I learned more from this video than many other gtr videos. Great stuff
Thank you for that and I'm glad I could help
Thanks for this Archer! My dads currently looking into an R35 and we were a little confused as to which R35 should he get and thanks to your informative video, he’s definitely going in the market for a CBA! Keep up the great content, Archer! ✌🏽

Great informative video Archer! Thanks for posting. I learned a couple of things I didn’t know. A video idea for you, I would love if you could do one on brakes. Specifically carbon ceramic zr1 swap. There is a lot of info on it but putting it all together and knowing where to get all the parts can be tough.

When i was looking for an R35 my choices were a Higher mileage tuned DBA or a Very low mileage totally stock CBA. After all considerations ( & this video) i went for the CBA. All i'm gonna do is DBA turbo inlets & software upgrade to LC5. Thanks for this video, it helped me choose.
Awesome. Good choice and glad I could help

@@richardmahoney9415 We got some in common. I have a Raptor, and own a GTR. Do not, I repeat do not get a car under 2012. 2011 and under transmissions had major problems. Now in 2012 they did major renovations and improved 100%. It also tracked the launch control so it showed all the launches. 2012-2014 everything is great! 2015 I believe they again did a minor adjustment so it might be a little superior but not by much. I was very lucky to get a 2012 without this prior knowledge. And what else he doesn’t inform you is by dropping the oil pan it’s just about 9-10 hours worth of work for a skilled mechanic. It took me 11 1/2 hours as I took many breaks. So good luck on your adventure.
CBA is the best looking R35 IMO
of course get the newer one. Or the newest one that fits your budget I recommend getting one stock though, it's a great journey to gradually mod your gtr

CBA without a doubt looks the best to me. Wish I could get the performance and interior of the 2024 GTR with the exterior looks of the 2007 GTR.
My favorite is the cba i just love how basic and pedestrian it looks. I would love a silver 2011. Its the one i fell in love with as a kid
Very good information, well done sir. Do you know by chance if change of front bumper from CBA to EBA, will hood from CBA fit the EBA bumper?
One thing I found very hard to agree on in this video: I never found anything that suggests the first three digits of R35's chassis code are reference of ECU program. The theory I found much more reasonable was that they stand for Japanese Emission Standard codes (C/D/4=2005's 50%/2005's 75%/2018's 25% of low emission certification, B=gasoline, A=passenger car), I'm not saying this is undoubtly true, just way more likely to be. And since we are here, no there's no EBA according to Nissan, BUTT, there is a 4BA, this chassis code should be on the VIN plate of every GT-R from MY2020 and on.
i feel like reading a cheat sheet before buying the r35 with this video.very good info to know.
Glad I could help. I also have a video on what to look at when buying a R35
Glad I could help. I also made a video show everything you should check when buying a R35 also
Thank you so much. Needed this. Definitely didn’t like the CD Player so I’ll continue to save for the 2017 so I can have apple car play too.
I think speed by design also made an apple car play/android auto for the DBAs
@@JDArcher nice, I know they have a Nismo body kit for the DBA’s around 15k. So I might just do that.
@@justinvandusen75 that seems a little high. It's something I would want to do as well. CT Carbon has the wing for $1.2k, and the fenders fir about the same price. I saw someone on the FB pages that was doing a CF Nismo nose for I think around $2k

After 15 years I wish they'd give us something different
The DBA is my favorite, it has the best look and took everything we loved about the CBA, but made it better. Also the paddle shifters are still on the steering column.
It definitely has the best look, although I prefer paddles on the wheel
2:30 "Daytime Running Lights, it *DLRs* " 😂😂
I went with a DBA. Didn't bother tuning it and want it as reliable as possible. And last 2 years, knock on wood it's good.
I own a DBA an absolutely 🥰 it never gonna look back.
I like mine as well. The little changed between the CBA and DBA I like. I'm not really a fan of the 2016 refresh
Video answered a lot of my questions, thanks! I've read that certain years got a softer steering with less road feel. Happen to know what years and any other driver feel, connectivity differences? Also, could the "EPA" suspension fit on the DBA wo hiccups?
First I've heard of the softer steering, but 2015 and up does have softer suspension. And yes all suspensions bolt patterns are the same across all platforms
Very informative. Thank you. But what it’s where it my goal is to get a 16-17 Nismo edition.
Love the 2017 Nismo

Ive got a cba for 3years now. I installed the tsb clips and dodson filter right after i buyed it. 2017 sofware update and the car is pretty much an EBA now. Absolutly no issues at all so far. It cost me less than 1000$ to do that 👌🏼 ive got a video on the tsb installation on my channel

When did the inner section of the engine cover change from black colour to red? Was that from CBA to DBA?
Correct
Between the CBA and DBA, which one has the stiffer suspension and heavier steering feel?
Both are about the same. The suspension was softened in 2015
By updating the transmission software…does that erase any tunes that have been done prior?
I thought I was going crazy because I actually liked the look of the DBA too, and still do. It's more pure.
My ideal design with be DBA exterior with 2017 interior
Grrrrrreat video for a newbie on the different models of a GT-R. THANK YOU A TON!!! That helps out A LOT. Is there away I can get a ODB2 Scanner that will show that xBA and/or LC is loaded in the car (and not have to goto nissan and pay them $$ )? Does anyone have a DIY kit or a hack they are using to build a FULL NISSAN Scanner tools for these model cars?
Easy answer is to get an ecu teck. Not only can you do fuel curves, but it gives you a ton of information. Other than that Nissan PPI is the best way to go
Funny that you like the looks of the DBA. In late 2011, I could buy a 2010, 2011, or 2012 model. I liked the looks of the CBA and 7 spoke wheels much better than the DBA, so I bought the CBA, and saved $15,000 as well. Early DBAs also were having paint problems. Spent $2000 on Stage 1+ Cobb and have 50 more hp than the newest GTR. I think the CBA suspension is the best for performance, with turn in quicker than the DBA because of alignment changes. Newer EBA models have less precise road feel and steering feedback.
I miss going to the OC Block.
The abandoned mall is a great place to shoot right now
You should come back out for supercar Sunday some time
Get the updated lights from 2015. My 2012 has them and it looks stunning.
Agreed. Want to do some other stuff first
Hey JD.. watching this again.. Didn't the transmission get updated a little bit in 2012, to make them more durable? I thought I heard that.. or was it just a Launch control uipdate?
Correct, there were some updates in 2012. That's why DBA transmissions don't need TSB clips
So get CBA for cheap and evn tho trainy breaks down rebuild it woulddnt be cheaper?? And can spend some $$ to make it better??😮 im looking for GTR advise?
I wanted a 2015 or newer and managed to find a PERFECT 2016 LOCALLY! Couldn't believe it. FBO, E85, tuned, single owner, not even 12k on the clock, upgraded turbos...its even the right color! QBA, just like my Z!! It's a friggin savage...love the hell out of it!!
Nice, congrats on the find
@@JDArcher Thanks, man! I've had it for just over a year and don't think I'll ever sell it. 🤣

There ya go. They really are a good all around car. Family car, daily driver, Gran tourer, race car
I notice your interior door panel is all peeling near the window. Is that common? Never seen that before
Peeling? I don't see that?
Thanks for such an informative video ! One question though... Will it be wiser to get an old CBA, rebuild everything to near "new" condition, or spend that extra cash on DBA In my country, CBA is currently at 60 - 65k USD whereas DBA is about 85k USD (20k++ difference) DBA's are very rare now, only late 2011/2012 model left, so it's a 10 years car and I'm pretty sure there's lots of wear and tear. Despite the fact that CBA is a hassle for transmission, and also other major parts such as engine, timing chain, abs pump etc. Will it be wiser to spend that 20k++ difference (or more if budget allows) to rebuild EVERYTHING possible to feel like brand new, or get the DBA and spend maybe lesser bucks, maybe not on transmission but common parts like pads and rotors (means engine and transmission all are still 10 years old ++) Extra note : Trying to keep it stock but 500hp ++ just like DBA, still a newbie Thanks in advance!
If you're going to upgrade and replace CBA is a great way to go. Don't worry about the transmission, just do the TSB clips and you're good to go.
@@JDArcher Thanks for clarifying, the only concern I have now is that will there be more parts needs to be replaced as well? steering rack, differential, tyre sensors..etc. My end goal is try to replace all to new parts, so I'm not sure how old CBA's are holding up for these parts, wouldn't want to spend the repair ending up the same cost as buying a 2017 recon.
@@fazaladil7905 I've never heard of steering rack issues. Most people aren't like me and don't daily the car. With your concern though, if you're upgrading the part, is it maintenance. Like coil overs, poly bushings, Shep trans, alpha turbos and so forth
@@JDArcher Thank you so much, yes, it'll be weekend car for me too...hopefully it'll turn out better than the newer version, kudos to you

I don’t know if you’ll get to this since you posted over 2 years ago but what is the 2011 in your video you say it’s a CBA but on the internet it’s not clear most sites refer to it as a DBA but others just like you did call it a CBA. And I was just wondering if you also thought that would be a good choice because there is a 2011 that has a pretty good price on it nearby and I was considering it everything else just seems expensive but maybe I’m not looking in the right spots
The new tuner cult giveaway is what type? Middle?
DBA Babyyyy🔥🔥🔥🔥
My favorite as well
Great video, how did Nissan get the HP from 545 on the 13-16 to 565 on the 17+?
I think it was just some tweaks to the fuel map
@@JDArcher inlets, a bit more peak boost, fuel, IGN timing and cam timing maps were slightly redone.
They got it by taking M multiplying it by C but squaring it first, which resulted in E which itself equals HP.
Also cba has different centre console screen it has a chrome lip around the edge and is separate from its control panel.
Yup. The resolution is better with the DBA and the 2017 on up had a bigger screen.
Im new in the jdm market and love the looks of the gtr r35, what I dont understand yet is why some model prices vary so much, are those nismo, premium, black edition body kits/rims/carbon fiber trims only or the actual engine is upgraded? Can someone explain?
Except for the nismo, which got some upgraded turbos, the engine and transmission are all the all the same. The packages are mainly esthetic
@@JDArcher thank you for the quick response🙏🏼 unbelievable price tag for visual/cosmetic differences that you can buy a base model and do the body kits later on I guess. I thought there was a difference like base meredes to amg but thanks for clarifying. There is a high spec gtr r35 nismo sv 21’ on carsales here in Australia for 699k, its mindblowing

What about the 2024 GT-R? Are they new platform code? or still in the EBA platform?
So far I've not really seen anyone talk about it. Technically there is only tye CBA and DBA. Nissan hasn't made any significant changes to the platform since 2012
Watching this in 2024. GTR STILL LIVE 🎉
I just want to point out the transmissions on the first generation GTR do suck because it has a lot of transmission chatter the only way to fix that is to get a updated transmission bell housing from another GTR a newer one
Another difference is the brakes on the CBA are smaller than the DBAs and EBAs from my knowledge and front bumpers are Hella expensive for these cars lol love mine tho DBA FTW
Oh wow, im surprised this video has been up this long and this is the first time that was pointed out. Yes, the CBAs do have smaller front rotors. Nice catch, thank you. As for the bumper conversion, I've found the bumpers to not be to bad, it's those damn DRLs that are stupidly over priced for just some lights.
I like the OG CBA. Personally I don't like the EBA as I feel they made it look too busy. I like the DBA lightning bolt headlights though.
I still think the DBA is the best, looks good and I'm sure is the best they ever done 2013 and 2014 models. Also I can't stand the steering wheel paddles on the EBA, makes it impossible to drive on Manual.
Im also more of a fan of the dba looks
Ok lol. There is a saying where I’m from. If you don’t have what you like, you like what you have ;)
Brilliant information. That was exactly what I needed
Awesome. Glad I could help
Just curious is there any size difference on the body between the cba and dba like fenders rear panels etc ?
Nope. They're all direct port over pretty much. There are some things that create a little more work like getting the DRLs to work on tue CBA becuase the CBA didn't come with them.
CBA looks the best, cleanest face, not been turned into eurotrash with the extra angles and DRLs. Sure the gearbox needs a refurb at some point but it has the purest aesthetic
I want the eba interior swap
That would be the ideal set up
What about the transmissions i dont know what year is best for building like a 1000hp on the transmission or should i swap the transmission
Anything over 800hp you should get a built transmission. Shep transmissions seem to be the most popular
@DJ_PS_ GAMER if you keep everything stock the CBA sits at around 500hp and a DBA around 550hp. As for as what the stock gears in the transmission can handel. I hear anything over 650 and you should consider a Shep trans anything over 800hp should start looking at pistons, rods, crank and valves
@DJ_PS_ GAMER at that much HP you're looking at a rebuild an blue print of both engine and trans.
@DJ_PS_ GAMER no worries
Hi I’m looking to buy GTR r35 CBA 2009/2010 , is there anything else I should be aware of apart what you mention gearbox update software ? As heard that gearbox has got bad rep. , and also what milage they can get issues as heard after 80k miles
So, mine is at 130k miles. The only things that have come up, aside for general maintenance, is 1) the car started throwing the code (P0011, if I remember right) which means the time g chain had to be done. This was at around 97k miles and , 2) the pressure sensor on the transmission went out leaving me with odd gears only. The transmission has to be removed from the car to get at the sensors, so I elected to do a full stage 1 rebuild at SP Engineering. This happened around 120k miles. Other than that, no major issues.
@@JDArcher thank you

Hello JD! May I ask how is your eye sight going for a GTR driver like you? Do you wear glasses, contact lens or just leave it blurred while driving? Thank you!!
What? I assuming you're trying to burn me, but I think you missed your mark
@@JDArcher Nooo I’m asking if do you already wear eye glasses as a driver or do you still have good eye sight til this day.
@@vrsinal1339 still good eye sight. Nit sure how that applies to GTRs though???
@@JDArcher Ohh Thanks. Sorry I was just curious about your eyesight since driving cars like the GTR usually needs good eyesight 😅.
@@vrsinal1339 ahh, well, no more than another car really. The visibility out of this car is great compared to some other cars
How do I make the R35 front look like a natural progression nose from a R34?
Body kit if there is one
I have driven my CBA since I bought it new in 2009 and still own it at 112,000 miles. You should know that in my case even though I had the launch control update and the TSB clip service update my transmission died ANYWAY right after my warranty expired. This even though it had NEVER been launched or track driven up to that point. I also lost my AV unit and my AC controls died. The AV unit happened under warranty and the AC after warranty. There is also the Bell Housing Rattle that was not mentioned in this video. There is a VERY high chance a CBA will suffer from this unless it was fixed under warranty or done by a good mechanic afterwards. If not, it is NOT really a cheap fix. I had that one done out of warranty. As a cautionary tale, don't think you are truly safe with just the clip TSB for the transmission being done. Trust me on this. Especially if you plan on going FBO on a used CBA. I took advantage of losing my transmission for the second time ( it failed before the clips were done and afterwards) by having it rebuilt by Shep Transmissions to handle more torque along with fixing its inherent flaws. Now I have been running FBO 600whp, 600lb-ft for years with no issue. It feels fantastic and has not had any UNKNOWN CBA issues. Everything I listed above is a well known CBA issue. In hindsight, it was still the best car purchase ever.... because it was 73k brand new for me in 2009. I can sell it for close to that even now. I won't, but it is nice being wanted.
Great post
So the CBA has no DTR, red LCD screen in dash, grey instrument panel, and start button is below the shifter? DBA has DTR, blue LCD screen in dash, CF instrument panel, and start button above the shifter?
Start button didn't move till the 2017 (so called EBA)
What about the electrical issue’s that most talk about on CBA’s, is that a myth?
I'm not aware of many electrical issues. I know the A/V unit can go bad.
I have a question can you swap the interior of eba to cda
It might be doable, but it would be a lot of work. The dash and center console were completely redesigned. However, the main chassis hasn't really changed since 2008
