The Steelpan Drum | Hear Us Out

Tom Berich and Ted Canning provide a hands-on Steel Pan experience for curious musical minds.
Both Tom and Ted have traveled to and performed in Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century-the Steel Pan! These professional musical instruments are literally hammered out of 55-gallon oil drums!
Ted and Tom present the fascinating history of the steel pan before recruiting audience members to step behind these unique and fun instruments to learn a Calypso tune called Sara. The audience split into groups to learn the parts of three different types of steel pans, from single lead voices on a shortcut barrel to full-size 55-gallon barrel bass voices. After a brief lesson, participants came together to perform the song Sara as a complete ensemble.
