The members of the Continental Congress pledged their lives and fortunes to the ideals of American Independence and the creation of The United States - an outcome that was far from guaranteed for a majority of their tenures.
Historian Mark Maloy of the National Park Service details the origins of the United States' first national political body.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

  • Thanks Mark! I grew up in southern New Jersey, and "grew up" with the history of the Revolutionary War and everything that happened almost in my backyard. I keenly remember the feeling of standing in Independence Hall, and at that time (late 1950s), the Liberty Bell was there, in the Hall, and I touched it many times. So much history---thanks for encapsulating the events that occurred across several years, right there in Philadelphia!

  • +CWPTbattlefields *The Second Continental Congress didn't rename the 4 July 1776 Declaration "The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America" until September 1776.* Originally titled "In CONGRESS, July 4th, 1776: A DECLARATION by the Repreſentatives of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA, in GENERAL CONGRESS, Aſſembled", the translation to _hochdeutſch_ of the original Declaration should have been titled „Im Congreſз, den 4ten Julŋ 1776: Eine Erklårung der Repråſentaten der Vereinigten Гtaaten von Amerika im General-Congreſз verſammelt“.
