- (Timestamps below) - Most logo design courses and tutorials focus a lot on teaching software, but I won't be doing any of that today. Instead, I'm going to focus on the most important considerations when designing effective logos. First, we'll run through a few slides to tackle some important considerations, then you'll see me (through timelapse) design 2 logo design concepts for an app I'm building. I'll describe my thought process, so that you can understand what I'm thinking as opposed to *doing*. Then, I'll show you survey results based on which logo design concept a non-target audience preferred vs. a target audience demographic.
@2:59 - Software
@5:25 - Logo design fundamentals
@12:41 - Timelapse logo design concepts construction w/ voiceover
@19:14 - Survey results (which logo concept was more popular?)
Thanks to the Guitar discord server for sending out the survey for the logo design:

Is procreate good for logo design?
Thank you for this!
Fantastic tutorial it's truly learning by doing sort of thing so very effective. Keep up the good work Simon!
Ok, but the “retro” logo didn't enter the survey, it was my favourite
same
I also LOVE that one on the left side immediately!! Looks more fun and musicians should like that one too. Love your style. Thank you for educating us!
Great tutorial, loved to see the conceptual process. Thank you!
That was one of the best tutorials I've ever seen, really! Great job!
Thank you for discussing the doghome logo. I literally started designing a logo today that I will need to use very soon and it looks almost identical, with the roof and the little pathway leading up to the house. But now I see that less is more.
amazing explanation, loved the illustrations and how you organize it all. thank you very much
Wow!!!!!!!!!! I've never see a pro at work like this. What an inspiration, you manipulate Illustrator like it was notepad ! Any of these logos you created, are worthy of startups and large companies, I would approve ALL of em, actually...I would have choice agony because they are all perfect!
it will be awesome to have a tutorial like this for website design. From the process of brand identity, from the company brief given, moodboard creation, styles board creation, and how you come up with the final website.
Thank you! This video was helpful, concise, and easily understandable! You're a great communicator.
I don't intend on doing logo designs nor am I a designer (trying to become a front end dev) but I just watched this whole video in awe at your skills and experience. Also the concepts you mentioned at the start are really cool even for basic web design. Keep it up and thank you for this amazing content!!
Great video! Seeing comparison of good and bad examples inspires a lot.
On my left {round design. Thanks lots of good info in how you designed it. 18 yrs, as designer and Graphic Coordinator and became freelance 1984 still going - I'm 76 today!
Thank you! I really appreciate your time and ideas.
This is great! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!!!
I really enjoy your great work. Great job Mr :)
You gave me a great idea for a new logo design. Thanks for that. And Great Video Sir!!! 🤩🤩🤩
thanks dude, I learnt a lot, blessings, great tutorial
I love your videos, never stop posting them!
can wait to see fretter ! thanks for the tut
Sir I would like to take this time to thank you. Your channel inspires me to be better.
WOW I love the content! very clever idea!
Amwesome vid. This is truly quality content
omg!!! I will never miss your any tutorial
All the basic knowledge is there, the only thing missing is experience which is ours to provide. Thank you very much for this crash course, really appreciated
Gosh! 😍 Thank you for this crash tutorial 🤝
Almost closed the window when I saw Adobe, then you showed Affinity... Outstanding apps!! Great video thanks
Very interesting to see your creative process!
You are a Master, thank you for sharing your knowledge !
Man I love your videos ... I always assumed I had no talent in design, but actually I just didn't KNOW anything. Thank you =)
Awesome tutorial; I learned a lot!
Yes. Smart guy. Good video, good lesson. Congrats!
You made a number of great points and I basically do the same when designing logos. The I prefer the wordmark Fretter design I can see why the icon based design won overall.
Really very informative! Thank you!
This was an interesting one. Helped me learn quite a bit between the 2 variations and why. I personally liked the logo compared to the lettering, and that's a much simpler design as well, so literal Vs figurative makes a lot of sense, and is a lot more flexible and "playful" if you will, so yeah. Thanks for this breakdown
Gary, I forgot to tell you one thing. I love you man. May The Almighty grant you a long healthy life.
Awesome tutorial! It's great to see how a designer describes the thought process. I learned a lot from this one
OMG! love that fretter logo making concept
Fantastic video, thank you so much! for the circular design, all i saw was the inverted E from Evanescence design, hahaha - Which made it my favourite :P
The guy is just to good to be a true man. He's one of a kind to be honest.
Great Video! Do you find that it's harder to come up with a logo for companies that are more abstract in what they do? It feels like the ideas for a website about guitars arise more quickly than a website about teaching software or something.
love love love the jazz intro
Would really be great to hear more about the psychology behind "how people choose and what they find better" - in terms of design. You probably had situations where you would definitely go with one version, but clients favor one of the other versions (regardless if logo or any other design).
Might seem pedantic, but make sure to keep the emoji size the same when you put out those votes. It can create a subtle psychological leaning to the bigger one; similarly to what you teach about bigger buttons being reserved for more important call to actions.
nerds
More of this sort of stuff please !!
Outstanding tutorial. Although I use CorelDraw, I did learn some new creative concepts.
Thank you so much. Very useful lesson!
Nice concept creating video.
I love the background color..🥰🥰🥰
fun new video, fantastic new year
Good Tutorial, a different approach
great process. great fretter logo!
Great video learnt a lot.
You are very great Gary
Make more of those types of videos please❤❤
I come here not only study code but also study English. Your voice is so nice!
The proper wording is: "I come here to not only study code, but also English" I'm studying Spanish, Arabic, and Urdu. English was my first language. This language is very inconsistent and difficult! But you're doing wonderfully and I'm proud of you! :D
@@znbh aren't you splitting an infinitive?
Nick Johnson i sound so hypocritical now. yes i totally forgot i made this comment and now i feel so bad for spreading that misinformation. the proper wording should be “I come here not only to study code, but also English.” thank you so much for catching that mistake
@@znbh Isn't it (came) instead of (come)?
@@shreyaraman2372 very good question! it depends on the context. if a person refers to their arrival at a particular page frequently, then that person can say "I come here to study English." I made the assumption that the person to whom I replied was clicking on this page's videos frequently in order to improve their English, so I chose "come." However, if they only came to the video one time, then they can say "I came here to study English." This is a small difference between imperfect vs. preterit tense (an undefined amount of time vs. a specific, defined action which occurred one time.
Love your working..👏
I love Inkscape! But just discovered it recently. Great alternative and it's a lot like Illustrator.
Thank you😛 I know the vote’s over but this is my choice!
Thanks a lot for this video 🤗
Amazing, thank you !
you clearly workout. designer, guitarist, KZheadr, and even have time to workout... wow👍
Thank you for breaking down the whole process in such an easy and understandable way.
Sumpah keren banget... Kursus gratis.. Mantaappp..
Sir please make a video on business card Design as well... Love your videos ❤️
Great job man
HI, your videos have helped me a lot ......all the way. i just wanna know what you used to design, i didnt quite get that.
THANKS for this
I loved second one.
Hi Gary, great video as always. I know it's a minor, but could the vote be slightly influenced because the icon of the stuck out tongue is bigger than the heart and also you've made the white box bigger for the first logo. That's some marketing psychology there... Anyway, great content!
You're looking really good today!
i like your videos. newbie friendly
Thank you for your video. I love Logos. I have a few videos on my channel as well. They are so powerful. Visual Images transcend language barriers, and our memory is so visual Logos have a huge power to attract your ideal audiences.
Excellent content! Something we really needed. The program is useless without the ability to think in a certain manner :)
Hello there - great video, very helpful and really useful. Keep up the good work! Regarding impactful, readability and legibility, which is better; red (something like the Virgin Media red) text/logo on a white background, or white text/logo on a red background? is there any preference or science behind which is better or is so subjective that it doesn't matter? Thanks
Hey Gary, really liked the double test-panel. Was this the outcome you expected? For some reason I expected the musicians would go for the other logo . Thanks for the peek over your shoulders!
You are amazing!
I think the 'Combination Logo' won because it's a LOT more flexible, you can use the symbol for things like an app icon or a favicon. On the other hand I think the 'Wordmark Logo' still has potential, maybe you could have made the guitar frets more noticeable (possibly using negative space etc.) It was a cool video though, one thing that you could have discussed is the 'visual-pun'. (sorry for the imperfect English, not a native speaker)
you're doing the Lord's work, my friend
Yea please more
On the practical side, when you commented on your fellow designers not following your "voting" instructions, the graphic you provided could have easily incorporated visual, clear and simple, yet more specific signs (I'm thinking of three words, big and bold) on how to proceed, rather than reading a long paragraph (who has time these days). This is where you could have truly shined by showcasing how to see "outside the box" and how beneficial learning from our mistakes can be (that of course, if you did learn anything). Overall great content, but this golden nugget of learning was unfortunately lost.
thx bro for tutorial
I like the first Doghome Looks really nice and I'd remember it more since it has a House. Scalability isn't much of a problem for me Because I don't really use Microscopic Logos.
Even your cursor tracking is so still steady hands
nice layer manegment..... use diffrent layers for diffrent logo designs
"Doing something like this is so much more appealing to the eye" *bright blue logo sears into my brain*
Nice man
Illustrator's shape building really is better than anything else out there, but god I hate that subscription service. Sucks Adobe had to die on me like that.
look... whatever it is you want...linode has you covered
Awesome video
Great video! I just made a Logo the other day in raster 😆😂 Almost forgot to redo it in SVG. I've used Inkscape for a couple of years, and it's a great program. Especially if you don't use it all the time 💸
Just a word in the "5% knowledge of software" , although the ability to think outside the box is naturally the most important skills, it isn't necessarily the case always. For example, I'm a heavily visual person, so it's quite hard to me to picture something, but trying things - or in other words, making them visual before conceptual - help me create those things, so my logo design capability is directly linked to software knowledge, since the less you know about it, the less you can make happen.
I personally like the one on the right because it feels like it's balanced (Thanos reference from Avengers), whereas the left one shows a symbol (don't get me wrong, that symbol looks awesome, but it's just too much design on the left side of that logo)
Thank you sir
great content
I learned a lot from this vid.❤
Thank you for this tutorial! What's the software that you using for the appdesign? Thank you !
Adobe illustrator
I came to hang out I love the music. Then it cut off but the knowledge is really good.
Nice grade. What camera are you using to shoot this video?
