Episode 11: Rivetting / Making Rivets in three different ways - (free) Online Metalsmithing Class
In the 11th episode I am going to show you how you can use rivets to make connections. Maybe your piece prevents you from soldering (for instance when you are repairing a piece with gemstones) or you are just looking for another way to acchieve the same result. Rivetting might be it for you. And it does have some extra plusses. You can use invisible rivets, but you can place them in plain sight as well. Why not use them as a decorative element? Or how about adding moving pieces to your jewelry? In this tutorial I am showing you how you can use this technique to your benefit.
If you have always wanted to become a metalsmith or are interested in making your own jewelry than feel free to watch all 18 episodes of my metalsmithing course. You can find the entire course right here on my youtube channel. Just check out the 'free metalsmithing and jewelry making' playlist.
The metalsmithing tool kits are no longer available on my website. It was taking up too much time that I would rather spend behind the bench. The companies listed below are stepping in and would love to help you out. Best part: they even offered some great discount codes!
To end up, I would like to point out that all my videos are and will remain free. In return, it would be awesome if you could take the time to share my channel on your socials or with your metalsmithing friends. That's all. I think it's a privilege to create a community of people doing what I love most. So thank you so much for your support, it means the world to me.
Have a wonderful day,
Bregje

Another great video. I can’t thank you enough for all your very helpful and informative videos. I look forward to continuing to learn from you.
That is so kind of you Traci, thanks!
Wow! I have tried riveting decorative brass straps many times with only partial satisfaction. If I had known about that little “pocket” things would have gone much better! Thanks for these tutorials! I really enjoy them. BTW, I’m breaking fewer blades, practice is the key.
Yeah, that's great to hear! Practice is everything. Good job! And happy to be of help, :-)
You do such a great job on the close ups of your process. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
I am going to try this.

Always brilliant!!
Thank you for watching another tutorial Janet!
For the algorithm!
Thanks again Ruth!
Excellent!! 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you!
Thank you
Love love the hidden rivet technique, thank you for the great video!! I really appreciate all the work you put into your videos. Than You again!
I appreciated your coverage of this topic. The only thing I would have added is that, while working on the same side, turning the piece and tapping from 4-6 directions across the rivet wire, to ensure even metal distribution. Tapping in one spot would create quite an oval rivet, that, over time, would wear unevenly. Again, only my two cents from personal experience. Always enjoy your videos and selfless sharing of your knowledge and experience. 🙏🏼❤️
Hi Elizabeth, thank you for your response. I can't say that I share the same experience but I appreciate your feedback. Maybe this is an 'aha' moment for other viewers. Tapping straight down is very important not to disfigure the rivet. I totally agree there.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Your explanations are great and your camera work is fantastic!
I’ve had some success and some failures. Thanks for your video!
Thank you so much for your wonderful tutorials! I have learned so much from you and you descriptions and techniques are so easy to follow. I'd like to request a tutorial on HINGES and how to create double-balled hinge pins. I cannot get the wire to ball up (hot enough) without destroying other parts of my work. Thank you so much again! 💕
Thanks Lee! :-)
Great tutorial and such talented teacher. Thank you so much
Thanks again Shamila!
You are so good at explaining and demonstrating skills! Thanks so much!

Wonderful! I would like to incorporate the tube one in a design I've been thinking if doing but had no idea how to do the centre hole. Thanks again, I love learning from your videos 😍

Glad to hear I could be of help, thanks!
Heel erg bedankt voor je bijlessen. ze zijn erg leerzaam
Heel graag gedaan Heidi, bedankt voor het kijken!
Thanks for the video, going to give this a try this week - should you anneal the wire first? Or is that a bad idea? Thanks!
hello Bregja. thank you for sharing this episode on this very interesting technique. I will have a question regarding the silver wire used to make the rivet: should I have an annealed metal or on the contrary a hardened wire? thank you so much.
You are very welcome. Thank you for watching! I use hardened wire, because I don't want it to bend while tapping it down. I want it to be perfectly straight while it goes in. It would be an interesting test though, because I think both options are possible.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks Natalia!
What is the ball bur lubricated with?
What is a disc cutter? Do you have a video on how to use it?
It is a tool that you can use to cut out certain shapes. It is sort of a metal punch. I'll show you in one of my upcoming tutorials.
Could you use your ball bur to make the cup for the rivet?
Hi Martha, yes, I think that should work fine as well.
What gauge are your disks?
🙂👍
Thanks for watching!
@@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials Question can you heat and bend silver and gold plated items like spoons without discoloring or destroying the silver or gold plating?
I have to say that I haven’t worked with plated items before, but... I just received a plating pen by @pepetools so I can get back to you on this one shortly
@@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials Thank you🙂👍
Can you do a video for a chevron or v- shape ring? Thanks
Hi Terri, it is on my (long) tutorials to do list!
What do you use this technique for? With the plexi between?
You can use riveting to connect multiple pieces without soldering. You can even use it to create moving parts in your jewelry. The plexiglas was just to show you the possibilities. You can use all kinds of materials such as wood with this technique.
Essa peça branca é marfil?
I used google translate to translate your message and if I am not mistaken you are asking if the white stuff I use is Ivory? It is not, I would never use anything like that. It is just a piece of plexiglas. Some plastic, just to show you what is possible.
It is SO dangerous to hold a drill facing toward your other hand while drilling the item you are holding... NEVER do that, I know from experience here. 24:22 and 25:02
I had to look it up because I am always careful while working. I can see what you are talking about, but I am not drilling here. I am very gently opening up an already drilled hole. So not much exciting going on there, :-)
