I'm the founder of I AM D.A.N.C.E., a performing arts organization providing a platform for dancers worldwide. Our event, “The Dxngeon” was established to provide a space for the street dance community to train and battle in various street dance styles. And to build a healthy, robust, and active community by bringing together new dancers and spectators to witness the incredible potential of Ohio’s street dance scene. On Sept 10th, we are pushing the envelope to host the most prominent open styles 1v1 tournament in Columbus with a cash prize of $500. As our event continues to grow, we need support to cover expenses to ensure this event is an experience for the dance community and the general audience, who love to witness incredible movement. But we need your help. By donating, we will have a more significant opportunity to reach our goal. Thank you all for the love and support; see you at the Dxngeon!

  • The story in Lay's "Flying Apsaras" was inspired by Chinese mythology or folktales. Apsaras are spiritual immortal beings that can fly -- similar to angels -- which are based on Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. Flying apsaras are most often found in hieroglyph images as part of ancient Chinese cave murals. Lay even shot part of what was going to be the MV at the site of some of these caves. So, a lot of the pictures you see them making in this dance are designed to look like the images of the flying apsaras from those drawings. Lay is an ambassador for China, so one of his goals is to share Chinese culture with the world. One way he is doing this is by creating his own style of music which he has labeled M-pop. M-Pop stands for Mixed-pop, which means he mixes traditional Chinese elements and sounds with mainstream pop and hip-hop beats and styles -- combining old school Chinese culture with new modern hip-hop and contemporary beats and styles. The choreography has also been designed to highlight Chinese culture by using a lot of traditionally Chinese dance moves and styles. The choreographer that Lay worked with was Huang Xiao who is a member of his team from the dance competition show that Lay was a team captain on last year called Street Dance of China season 4, and the other dancers are all members of Huang Xiao's Hello Dance crew. Lay is a singer, rapper, songwriter, composer, producer actor, director, editor, dancer, designer, etc. -- genius -- and with every new release of his, he just one ups himself. When it comes to Lay's solo work he does it all -- he writes, composes and produces the songs (including the rap sections), he even creates all his own beats, he has a large part in creating the choreography and he has a hand in coming up with and directing the MVs. It is also all financed by him. He even owns his own production company called Zhangyixing Studios, which is named after Lay. (Zhang Yixing is Lay's real name. Lay is a stage name given to him by SM Entertainment.) As you might know, Lay is the Chinese member of EXO and he was originally meant to fill the same role in EXO-M -- the Mandarin Chinese sub-unit of EXO -- that Kai fills in EXO-K -- the Korean sub-unit of EXO. Kai is one of the top two BEST dancers in Korea (Taemin from SHINee being the other top dancer) and Lay is one of the top dancers in China. Lay's catchphrase is "Balance" which means that when it comes to choreography and synchronization it has to have balance. If it's not balanced then it's not good. So his attention to detail when he creates music and choreography is on point. He is so highly respected within the Chinese music and dance community that he is considered an authority figure. He has even started his own Idol trainee company in China -- with SM's blessing -- called Chromasome where he plans to use his talents to influence the world entertainment industry and to pass his skills and knowledge on to the next generation. (And he's not just head of the company in name alone, he is super hands-on in everything he does.) He is regarded as an expert at so many different things because when he decides to do something he becomes hyper focused with the goal of being the best at it. Like all of SM's top dancers, Lay is super dedicated when it comes to dance and music. He literally spends 6 hours every day in the dance studio practicing, regardless of how busy his schedule is. Some of his favorite sayings are "Try hard, work harder" and "Talent is only 1% of what you need to succeed, hard work, dedication and a grateful/humble heart is what makes up the other 99%." Lay is a perfectionist and he is never satisfied unless everything exceeds his expectations, which is why he only released a short 40 second visualizer using a few clips from what was going to be the MV, and we don't have a full MV for "Flying Apsaras" yet. He wasn't happy with the final product. This is also why Lay is involved in all aspects of his music. He takes pride in the fact that all parts of his work is done by him, so he wants it to be extremely high quality because it's his reputation that's on the line if things aren't up to his standard. His new album -- which is the album "Flying Apsaras" is on -- is called East. Fun fact: I believe the dragon in his "Flying Apsaras" visualizer clip is connected to the dragon we see in Lay's previous MV, "Lit." If you haven't seen the visualizer yet, you really should check it out.

    • 👏👏👏 thanks for taking the time to write this to let them know how amazing Yixing is. His hard work has been confirmed by Chanyeol who said Lay hyung was the busiest EXO memver and Kasper his choreographer.

  • Lay is such a perfectionist that he rejected the MV for this song because he didn't like how it turned out. We were only left with a preview of what it would have been, and we really wanted her to repent and release it.

  • FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY! I’ve been waiting for you to react to Lay again (and also with either James or Olaniyi! I KNEW you were gonna be “annoyed” again, ‘cause this dance practice had people on their necks, especially dancers! I’m so glad y’all mentioned waacking, ‘cause Lay mentioned it before that he didn’t realize that krumping and waacking are quite similar + during a dance battle in Street Dance of China, he briefly did a move or two and I kinda had a feeling he’ll dabble on it sooner than later :) Someone might correct me, but did you notice that it looks like tai chi was mixed in the choreo? I wish you two reacted to the visualizer, which unfortunately is very short due to his wish to not release a full version (he found it unsatisfactory). Regardless, it’s still enjoyable and definitely MOVING ART. Looking forward to you reacting to more of Lay soon 👀

  • So glad that you guys reacted to this and loved and enjoyed it so much! Indeed this dance practice/ song is a perfect marriage , a perfect blend of grace and power. Lay has been trying to push this new genre of music that he calls M-Pop , not to be mistaken with mandopop , M-Pop stands for mixed mandarin pop; the concept of it is to take something , a sound or an instrument that is rooted in Chinese culture and try to blend it with more internationally known genres and see if you can make something unique out of it! It is Lay's attempt to introduce more traditional Chinese sounds to a wider international audience while also modernising it. This choreography was choreographed by Huang Xiao, founder and a member of the HelloDance team (also the dance team that was featured in the dance practice video) and Lay himself! One of the things this choreography has been praised for is how seamlessly it incorporates ethnic dance, in this case, traditional dunhuang dance with more modern genres of dance e.g waacking to create this wonderful blend of modern and traditional, which is also what the M-Pop genre hopes to achieve! Anyways if you guys loved what you've seen of Lay so far you might want to catch him live in Brooklyn, New York at the Metamoon Music Festival this November 26! Lay is said to be headlining the festival and it will feature other Asian acts that are making their debut in the US. I'm unsure if Lay will be bringing Flying Apsaras to New York but as demonstrated in this dance practice video, he's an outstanding performer and a joy to watch live so I think it's a chance worth taking 👍

  • This is one of the most special dance practices I've ever seen. I love the original music and the fact that the choreography is so good is incredible. It's crazy that Yixing is out here leading dancing from a team of dancers that have won world events. He actually got even better every time I saw him perform this and I really hope I get to see him perform it live this November because it's *epic*. It's so lovely to see you both appreciating it so much.

Not only are your reactions hilarious and amazing, but you also have such insightful comments on the choreo and genuine feedback to add to it rather than just screaming that it's good, you explain WHY it's good and how intense what moves they're doing are. I really enjoy these videos because of all of this and I'm so happy I've found your channel. If I could recommend anything I'd say the soloist Chung Ha, watch her Snapping choreo and ASTRO, honestly any of their choreos are incredible, they are well known for being incredibly in sync with each other, it would be awesome to see you react to them.

That ended up having to be away from EXO for past 6+ years promoting separately as a EXO member within his solo music.
