Why Yemen is Dying (and Nobody Cares)

The war in Yemen is a conflict that has been going on for more than 7 years. Officially it is a civil war between the government forces of Mansur Hadi and the Shia "rebels" Houthi, but in reality it is a proxy war between Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Iran for control of the Arabian Peninsula and the strategic Bab El Mandeb Strait. Unfortunately, the UN has described the war as one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes currently underway. In this documentary video we delve into the history of Yemen, the origin of the war, how it broke out, and the interests at stake.

    • That is true, and also the UAE is benefiting from the continual of this war by being able to close down one of the main competitor to their Dubai seaport (port of Jebel Ali in Dubai is one of their major income sources), they achieved that by placing a large number of their troops in all the ports of Yemen, essentially changing them to UAE military bases, the video pointed that out at 21:36 . The UAE is claiming on their channels across their media empire that "they care about the suffering of the people in the south", and that is why they support the separatist Aidarus al-Zoubaidi and his Southern Transitional Council, that's what they claimed. The reality was different, that council served as a semi legitimate government in the south propped up by support for the (inflamed by UAE media) north-south case. The UAE pushed and is still pushing Yemen to the brink of a civil war between the north and south, just so they can continue to control the strategic areas the video talked about. I wish the best for the people of the south, weather they decided through a referendum that they want to secede or stay as one federal country , hopefully it will happen through a real voting process and not with the help of a 50 year old country that wannabe regional power by semi colonising other people in the region. These are pictures of the leader of "Southern Transitional Council" wearing a scarf that has pictures of UAE leaders on it: ahdathnet.com/news37836.html www.ypagency.net/69260 Edit: Grammer mistakes.

    • Socotra is probably not the key to very much in the war itself. It is an environmental gem, of course, which should be protected. It is also, however, an island positioned to be a handy location for defending the free movement of ships entering or leaving the Red Sea. It is a proxy war and they are always awful. There's no overstating that in this case. But, if we take a step back and ask ourselves what a good outcome could look like, I am not sure that I would say that a Yemen which is, in whole or in part, a vassal state of the UAE is such a terrible outcome. If forced to choose between Saudi Arabia, Iran and the UAE and leading powers in the region, I would choose the UAE without hesitation. No, they aren't perfect - far from it. But they offer an alternative to the dueling theocratic regimes of the Saudis and Iranians. Perhaps the UAE is toying with the idea of establishing itself as a regional power - even expanded in some form of union or mini-empire stretching from its current borders around the south to include Oman and East/South Yemen. They have already advanced themselves as willing to reconcile differences with Israel. Hypothetically speaking, they could shape up to be just the right positive influence in Arabia that Arabs have desperately needed for decades. Or ... perhaps not ... only time will tell.

    • @@gxtmfa well, if my plan succeeds, Yemen could be saved. It will take a political revolution, an assisted change of society for the better and a few economic plans with the EU, Russia, Turkey and India, but in the end, Germany will intervene in Yemen, do an airlift over the Saudi naval blockade and either cause a massive breakdown of Saudi relations with the rest of the world (especially the west) or show Saudi Arabia that its not the sole power to hold control over the Arabian peninsula. Maybe it will even go as far as hostilities towards Saudi Arabia in form of espionage and special operations, maybe even an air war, but if anything like that happens, Saudi Arabia is absolutely screwed, and Yemen will become a better place to live in. After the airlift of humanitarian aid, a "friendly occupation" of all contested territory will follow, and the German army will start a peacekeeping operation in Yemen while continuing to supply Yemen with humanitarian aid, aid via civilian and state-owned foundations and slight financial aid, but most will go to the foundations which will then carry out the aid plan, to evade government corruption. After the situation has calmed down after a few years and the groups involved can mostly live peacefully with each other again, the occupation will end (in which basically nothing changed about the government system), and Yemen will continue growing in prosperity as an ally and tarde partner of Germany.

  • I love the way all the comments speak of the wonderful friendly people. I spent a short while in Yemen. From west to east, to the Omani border. The slavery was unpleasant. The minds of the people were closed. It was very dangerous. To the East of Sanaa, beyond Maarib, only those with serious guards could move. Foreigners were nowhere to be seen beyond Shab'wa. Every ten Km it was necessary to warn the folk ahead of our impending arrival, a task achieved by firing into the air. I was not threatened more than three times. I did not get shot at. Salah had his work cut out. At one stage there was a food surplus, but lack of cash caused the legalisation and taxation of quat. This quickly lead to 25% of the land being devoted to quat. The effect of quat is a bit like crack. It does not lead to quiet contemplation. Salah tried to leave but was manipulated back into his seat. The social problems seem intractable. Forget the lack of rain and agriculture. I think the place would make a very good national park, but it will remain a failing state. I can not see how the slavery can be stemmed. There are five times more AK47s in the country than people. A man is undressed without one.

Yemen is a dumpster fire, the only reason the country is as terrible as it is, is because the Yemeni people have no problem extorting their own. Very next day, Joy Reid on CNN, like clockwork, all 'oh, you people care so much about the WHITE PEOPLE dying in Ukraine, but have you heard about these brown people in Yemen??' In this Ukraine war I’m hearing too much of “this is not Africa and the Middle East” “these are people with blonde hair and blue eyes” the truth is since these people are not accepted by the progressivism movement in the west nobody gives a dam about these people

  • Wow, hard to get your head around this extreme complexity. Thank you very much for this educational video. Clearly greater international aid is currently needed but will never solve the problems of Yemen. It is sadly ironic that Yemen has such oil & gas wealth yet 30% of its population starves. Could you do a follow up video on the suggestions that have been made (if any) to set Yemen up to be self-sufficient? At this point a Saudi Arabia takeover making Yemen a protectorate and gradually introducing working government with sensible exploitation of its oil & gas reserves, including for the use of creating water desalination plants, would seem to be the fastest way to get improvements started. But I am sure that others have suggestions.
