Sandhill Cranes Dancing ~ Mating Dance and Calls

2014 ж. 19 Сәу.
193 054 Рет қаралды

Sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) performing a courtship ritual consisting of dancing, calling, and stick tossing. The call of the sandhill crane can be heard up to 4km away. The sandhill crane has one of the oldest fossil histories of any bird existing today. Fossils of Grus canadensis dating back 2.5 million years have been found.

  • Great video of the mating dance! A pair will continue to do this dance just for fun, all year round, including tossing things around. My parents had flags set out beside their sprinkler heads and the cranes found it great fun to toss those about. Same with the babies on my spider plant. lol

  • I just filmed Sandhill Cranes overwintering in Southeast Arizona. I'm making a movie about them coming in to roost. Unfortunately, I didn't see ANYTHING LIKE THIS! Wow, that must have blown your mind! I know how I'd feel if I were filming it: I'd want to put the camera down for a few seconds so I could do a happy dance! But of course I'd keep filming, same as you did. Great job.

    • Hi Jo, and thank you! I have marked a few of your videos to watch later - and I'll watch for the sandhill crane video! I felt so lucky to have seen this. And I saw it two days in a row in the exact same field! It was truly incredible. I wish I had a better camera back then, They were so far away, but their song was so loud. Impressive birds in every regard! I hope you are having a great week! Les

      @WanderingSoleTV@WanderingSoleTV4 жыл бұрын
    • I hear you about the camera, Les. I've started using a Nikon P1000 for distance--shot the cranes with that one--but that has its own downside. The focus fades in and out momentarily, all but ruining many shots. I guess we both need one of those fifty pound professional cameras, huh? If only I were strong enough.

      @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME4 жыл бұрын
    • That sounds frustrating with the focus issues! I currently use a Canon SX60 for videos and am quite happy with it overall. I wish I had it for these days with the cranes!

      @WanderingSoleTV@WanderingSoleTV4 жыл бұрын
    • @@WanderingSoleTV Yeah, I don't know whether to cuss or be thankful. After all, no way am I getting that kind of distance with another camera. So I keep using it--and swearing. 😏 What's the Canon SX60 like? I have the Canon XF400. It offers much more consistent, sharp focus. But even with a telephoto lens, it gives very little distance.

      @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME4 жыл бұрын
    • I'm pretty happy with the SX60 (not too much swearing haha). It's great with distance up to 85x magnification. After that, it starts to get grainy - but it's rare you need to film further than that. Low light video and still shots are disappointing sometimes. But everything else makes it worth it for me!

  • We were golfing in Southeast Michigan, the cranes must of been migrating. About 10 of them were perusing the gold course together. One crane started the jumping and wing movements, then one by one each crane mimicked the first crane. It was so fun to watch, and a little perplexing. They looked like they were playing a game.

These two were doing lots of jumping and calling, we didn't see any stick tossing. Oh I wish I got it on video!
