Sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) performing a courtship ritual consisting of dancing, calling, and stick tossing. The call of the sandhill crane can be heard up to 4km away. The sandhill crane has one of the oldest fossil histories of any bird existing today. Fossils of Grus canadensis dating back 2.5 million years have been found.

Live in central florida and just saw 2 out side my door on the golf course...doing this mating dance very awesome to watch.
Lucky you. It is incredible to see isn't it?? And to hear! They're so loud. : )
I saw them when I was driving into my neighborhood cuz I went to the mall
Great video of the mating dance! A pair will continue to do this dance just for fun, all year round, including tossing things around. My parents had flags set out beside their sprinkler heads and the cranes found it great fun to toss those about. Same with the babies on my spider plant. lol
What amazing things to see from these remarkable birds. It must have been so interesting to witness that!
Camping out in Heber, Utah and saw these birds outside, they were walking around and probably looking for food dropped by campers. A little while later they had walked off and started jumping up and down as well as preening their feathers. It was very fun to watch!
Oh nice! They are so fascinating to watch!!
What a beauty! It is graceful and enchanting! Greetings from France.
Their dance is amazing to see for sure! Hello from British Columbia!
Thanks for posting this video. I've never been able to see cranes in person. These guys look like they're having a blast haha.
It's quite the way they show their affection to one another!! Glad you liked my video, have a great weekend!
Great capture of these stunning birds & their dance! I love how they toss the stick. Thank you so much for posting :)
+Fancy Gardenbird Thank you! It was amazing to see!
I had two sandhill cranes do this after I threw some apple pieces on the front yard for them. Does it mean they appreciated the apples? lol
“You ready?!!!” “Im ready!!!” “You ready?!!!” “Im ready!!!” “You ready?!!!”
I know I already PM'd you but I love this video sooo much. You truly did well to capture this, I can totally put myself in your shoes and feel the excitement and disbelief you felt as you watched and filmed away. Terrific job with a professional touch!! A huge thumbs up!!
Watching them flailing reminds me of those videos of the men on the moon bouncing up and kinda flailing around. Super funny and cute, I love these guys.
I never looked at this way! I can totally see it! : ) Thank you for the comment!
Great footage of the Sandhill Cranes !!!
Thank you! I felt so lucky to get to see this twice in three days!!
Michigan here! Biggest birds in Michigan! So cool!
They are amazing creatures!
Great video! I got to see this once here in Minnesota. Also watched them as they seem to dance in the air, flying and sort of circling around each other. They're beautiful birds! Thanks for posting this :)
Thank you Janet! They are such amazing birds!
Recently, some sandhill cranes have been showed up in my backyard. and I'm pretty sure I saw them doing this mating dance today! That's so cool!
That's amazing! What a blessing it is to get to see something like this!
How exquisite.... an absolutely delightful capture! Wonderful... thank you! Happy weekend. Warm greetings. Bella
I just the local cranes do this in my backyard!!! It was so wholesome
It's an incredible thing to see. You are lucky to see it from your home!!
@@WanderingSoleTV seeing all these comments make us appreciate what we tend to take for granted that we have a stable though small population around our community. love them!
I just saw the resident Sandhills doing this today in Ohio at Sandy Ridge Reservation. Awesome!
Oh wow, so amazing! It's really something to see! And hear!!
I've been in Florida for roughly a year now and a few days ago was when I first heard an actual sandhill crane noise. I've also seen one sitting down which was quite entertaining. This video really makes me want to see a sandhill crane mating dance in real life.
Such amazing birds! They are so loud! It's great you got to hear them... and someday you may see the dance also. I was so lucky to see it two days in a row!
A few months ago, cranes did a mating dance in my yard while I was getting mail! It was very cute imo. Wonderful birds !
What an incredible experience that must've been!
That is so cool we had that in our neighbors field and looked it up to see if we were seeing was the mating dance.😜
That's great that you got to see and hear it! It's so amazing!
I just filmed Sandhill Cranes overwintering in Southeast Arizona. I'm making a movie about them coming in to roost. Unfortunately, I didn't see ANYTHING LIKE THIS! Wow, that must have blown your mind! I know how I'd feel if I were filming it: I'd want to put the camera down for a few seconds so I could do a happy dance! But of course I'd keep filming, same as you did. Great job.
Hi Jo, and thank you! I have marked a few of your videos to watch later - and I'll watch for the sandhill crane video! I felt so lucky to have seen this. And I saw it two days in a row in the exact same field! It was truly incredible. I wish I had a better camera back then, They were so far away, but their song was so loud. Impressive birds in every regard! I hope you are having a great week! Les
I hear you about the camera, Les. I've started using a Nikon P1000 for distance--shot the cranes with that one--but that has its own downside. The focus fades in and out momentarily, all but ruining many shots. I guess we both need one of those fifty pound professional cameras, huh? If only I were strong enough.
That sounds frustrating with the focus issues! I currently use a Canon SX60 for videos and am quite happy with it overall. I wish I had it for these days with the cranes!
@@WanderingSoleTV Yeah, I don't know whether to cuss or be thankful. After all, no way am I getting that kind of distance with another camera. So I keep using it--and swearing. 😏 What's the Canon SX60 like? I have the Canon XF400. It offers much more consistent, sharp focus. But even with a telephoto lens, it gives very little distance.
I'm pretty happy with the SX60 (not too much swearing haha). It's great with distance up to 85x magnification. After that, it starts to get grainy - but it's rare you need to film further than that. Low light video and still shots are disappointing sometimes. But everything else makes it worth it for me!
Great video! We're jealous you got to witness something like this. Thanks so much for sharing!!!
Thank you! I've been seeing them quite a bit. It's been quite a treat. I hope to see them with a chick soon!
@@WanderingSoleTV I love that they are so social and communal
I have a sandhill crane here at work i played this video while it ate bird seeds it stoped and listened then continued to eat he/she ignored it lol
hahaha
Amazing Footage! Great Job!
We were golfing in Southeast Michigan, the cranes must of been migrating. About 10 of them were perusing the gold course together. One crane started the jumping and wing movements, then one by one each crane mimicked the first crane. It was so fun to watch, and a little perplexing. They looked like they were playing a game.
What a great thing to see. It is pretty playful for sure!
They kinda sound like if a Canada goose was a squeaky doorframe
Brillian video amazing to watch...thank you for sharing this with us...
Beautiful!
Just amazing.
It really is the most remarkable display! And I saw and filmed it twice in a week!!
@@WanderingSoleTV I live in swfl. Do you know when their mating season is? I'd love to film this.
Beautiful
Thank you! It was amazing to see. And I was lucky enough to see it again a few days later!
Wow you were lucky to be in the right place at the right time. Great filming! Funny how they toss the stick around. Wonder what it means? Joan
I have read that that is just part of the whole mating ritual. To each their own I guess! : )
Great Gallery! Sandhill Cranes are such a pleasing bird!
Thanks James! I've been lucky to see them quite a few times now. They're pretty amazing.
Great video.
Thank you! I was so fortunate to see this dance two days in a row!
Very nice to see this! Thank you for this video!
Thank you Berta!! It was wonderful to see. I watched it two mornings in a row!
I've never seen this. How lucky you were to film this.
+Trisha King I was quite fortunate to see this two days in a row!
Yesterday, we saw this for several minutes on our walk around the neighborhood in Florida. We have a pretty big population here and they are often with little ones. These two were doing lots of jumping and calling, we didn't see any stick tossing. Oh I wish I got it on video! The back ground was definitely not as pretty as this one, but their dance was very dramatic and thrilling to watch.
It is amazing to watch! And to hear!! I'm sure it was amazing. Thank you for sharing your story.
What a gorgeous video! The cranes are so beautiful dancing their crane dance. I really love this video. Thumbs up! Have a nice day, Ardisia
Thank you Ardisia!
SUPERB FOOTAGE PAUL
Thanks Paul!
thanks so much for showing this.
Thank you Rod! Glad you liked it!
Crane dance with music
Fantastic!
Beautiful birds! We are traveling tomorrow in hopes to see some!
Did you manage to see any?
@@WanderingSoleTV We did! Over 100! Lucky to have seen them also because apparently they are already leaving the area now! We went at the right time!
@@goodkarmabirding That's incredible!! Must've been amazing. Now, they're headed back up my way : )
I like it when they do this
It is incredible isn't it? I hope to see it again someday!
We saw some doing this, and my (then 8 year old) daughter starting singing 'Mr. Sandman' and it matched up pretty well, lmao.
I'm sure that made for an interesting musical mix! haha
Nice video Les - enjoyed that. Quite the girations for sure - wonder they don't get dizzy!
Thanks Bob!
I saw them one time doing this I was like what the heck now I see this and it all makes sense
It's a pretty amazing ritual to see!
wonderful to watch. fascinating to listen to.
It really was amazing to witness (and to hear!). I was fortunate enough to watch these displays two mornings in a row!
They have wonderful voices.
Indeed. It's amazing how loud they are!
We have these up in Michigan very entertaining
It is so fascinating to watch for sure! Thank you for commenting!

Piękne zaloty :) Pozdrawiam wiosennie :) Ela
Great capture! It's difficult to film wildlife!
This is so funny😂
It is a funny way to attract a mate lol
Love it.
Oh thank you Jannice!! I am always glad when I hear from you, because I think you were the first person who used to comment on my channel regularly. : ) I hope you are well and that you are having a great 2017!
Doing fantastic, thanks for asking. I see you videos, just don't post as much as I use to. But I do watch them, and they are as usual FANTASTIC.
Oh, again, thank you so much Jannice! I have a much better camera now than I used to when I started out. I keep thinking of how to make things a little better. : )
LOVELY....:)

Thank you Jennifer! Hope you're having a great week!
Awesome
Indeed! I was so happy to be able to see this - twice in a week!
@@WanderingSoleTV omg lucky!!!
Very much so! It was amazing.
Crane mating calls were used to make the sounds of the velociraptors in jurrasic park
Interesting!
We got these all over south central Wisconsin. My neighbor feeds them and at one point one of the cranes decided to do the mating dance with her. She was laughing hysterically.
I'm producing a short documentary about Sandhill Cranes, and have not been able to capture their courtship dance so well. Would you be open to allowing me to use this footage if I cite your KZhead channel?
Hey Paul! Thank you for your comment. Could you tell me a bit more about the documentary? Are you just producing and creating it personally? Where will it be posted/aired?
Hey Paul, how is the documentary going?
Neat
Sandhill Cranes mate for life and when their mate dies, they go through the rest of their life alone 😢
I thought I had read that they would find a new mate after the death of a mate. But, I couldn't find the definitive answer from a quick search this morning...
Like men and women in the club before taking it to the bedroom lol!
hhahaha sweet. Yeah, there's not much difference lol
Too Cranes and dancing to 2 Cranez Too.
: D Awesome!
That squeak goes away with oil on the hinges.
haha
#LifeOfTheParty
haha absolutely!
I gave some food to a couple and they started to dance feet from me. I was in shock thinking they were dancing in joy for the food I had provided.. 😂 little did I know they were just getting it on
Совсем нерусский стал
can't wait to hunt these magestic creatures! so much food for the table.
