keep coming back here because this symphony is fucking INSANE. tchaikovsky was indeed a genius, holy cow his music is just beyond words beautiful and indescribable, im on cloud nine listening to this
It's so difficult! So many interpretations, so many ways to do every phrase. But, as a musician, in the end you need to make your choice, let it out and trust your musical ❤. This interpretation is wonderful. The 3rd movement is very light hearted and nimble.
It’s the best Tchaik symphony… and this orchestra did the *most*. Absolutely ate.
The second movement’s opening never ceases to touch me to the very soul. Tchaikovsky’s ability to detail the anguishes of life, yet somehow tell a story with a little hope and light is unrivaled. The man was a genius.
I couldn't agree more. There is so much pain, suffering and hope (french horn) within these very first seconds of the second movement. It never ceases to amaze me.

The second movement makes me stop in my tracks just hearing those harmonies and then the French horn stepping in 😩😩 hand down some of the most gorgeous music ever written 💕
Heartstopping melody, especially from French Horns.😢

The climax of the second movement always makes the hairs on my arms stand on end and nearly always makes me cry. Sublimely beautiful music.
I hadn't heard the piece in a long while. Loved it, then got tired of it. With fresh ears, I have to say, that horn player's tone was extraordinary. I wouldn't mind being his next door neighbor.

Unbelievable composer, unbelievable work , unbelievable orchestra & conductor 🎩 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Don’t really know anything about music, other than my love for it. I can’t even begin to fathom how a person can create something so beautiful just with marks on a page. I imagine it must require such a knowledge and deep understanding of the inner mechanisms of music. Not to mention the depths of emotion he must’ve accessed to create something so stirring. And that is just creating it. The actual performing is a whole other thing, that is no less impressive. Ahh I’m so grateful for classical music and Tchaikovsky. It’s so beautiful.

One of the most romantic symphonies.
I love the passion of this concert! So many conductors almost seem apologetic about playing Tchaikovsky, as if he needs to be toned down or something. I say if you’re going to do Tchaikovsky, do it with gusto! That second movement is sublime. The horn solo is played with such sensitivity and he really lets it just ooze out and the aching notes speak for themselves.
hi, please don't describe notes as oozing and aching, it makes me uncomfortable
@@adog3129 Yeah, uh, Tchaikovsky himself made his French contemporaries feel uncomfortable. They considered him a Slavic barbarian. Let's ooze and ache passionately.

Well I've been listening to this piece for about 60 years and I would say this performance is definitely above average. Also the recording quality is quite good. It's certainly one to keep in your personal library.
I completely share your sentiments, except nearly 70 years of listening starting with the classic Ormandy/Philadelphia recording on a 45 rpm set. This is definitely a “keeper.”
me too - when I was growing up we had a 'World Records Club' LP. (well, we had a huge set of them - my dad had done a stint as one of their salesment in his youth) I don't remember who the orchestra or conducter were, but that was my intro to Tchaikovsky. I have never been able to find a recording since that so captured the lyrical dance at moments. Also, I am a little disappointed that this recording sublimates much of the very important underground rhythm that throbs along in the background. To me, those two aspects of this symphony are what really raise it to such a sublime level - in this recording (and many others) you have to listen hard to catch them.
THIS PERFORMANCE IS ABOUT AS GOOD AS IT GETS, & THE SOUND IS PHENOMENAL. AS FOR TCHAIKOVSKY'S MUSIC... GODLY.
I just performed this solo on Tchaikovsky ‘s birthday. What an honor!

c.s.o. + Claudio abbado. You can’t beat it in any century
@@ludo4961 I tend to agree, though Russian music is in the DNA of Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic to such an extent that to my ears few achieve what they can and do. Bernstein delivers a fine interpretation, but, again to my ear, misses what the Russians call 'iziuminka', the French a 'je ne sais quoi' that raises the hairs on the back of one's neck and elevates the performance beyond even the extraordinary. Claudio Abbado pushes the envelope like no other non-Russian. Now, I would be foolish to insist that Messrs Abbado and Temirkanov have a monopoly on interpreting this work. Isn't it of paramount importance that whoever's conducting whichever orchestra give the listener a transcendent(al) experience? I think so and am grateful that this KZhead video brings such pleasure to listener-viewers.
That, my friends, is a work of pure genius. To compose music at that level is almost impossible for us poor mortals. A wonderful performance makes it even more impressive. Nice job Manfred.
Una interpretación realmente magistral!! Un gran director con una gran orquesta. Todo mi reconocimiento a ésos talentos 👌
Don't know much about classical music but I absolutely love listening to this Tchaikovsky piece. My favourite horn solo ever. Sounds so hauntingly beautiful~
I commend you for appreciating the unfamiliar!
The 5th was the first concert (of any kind) I ever went to. In London in about 1983, the Halle orchestra I think. My Grandad was the big classical music aficionado in our family and made me a cassette of this symphony, and the 6th. Even though I didn't really 'get' the concert the first time, it was a bit too overwhelming, I did listen to the tape and got into it on the 3rd or 4th listen. It's now one of my favourite pieces of classical music.
Lol You just hate classical music bc you're jealous that it's better than all modern crap
Congrats! You’re special!
Here today because of that news article about a female audience member in the UK having a "screaming, full-body orgasm" that was accepted as matter of course by the orchestra and audience, with respect, lol. It was during this piece. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't experienced something similar, quite by accident, as a young man attending a jazz concert on the lawn of the NC Museum of Art. Bunch of old coots playing ragtime and pops-in-the-park stuff. And when that thing happens to you, and electricity shoots up your spine, look around you. You probably aren't alone.
I feel so sorry for anyone who has never played in an orchestra like this one. The experiences are beyond description. The emotional catharsis alone is literally a spiritual freedom and expression that is multi-dimensional and universal in scope; bordering on the divine and eternal, timeless and immortal.
OMG your comment almost made me cry
@@timbredan3476 Thank you!!!
@@StefanFourie-iy2gf if you play saxophone you can also play in concert bands (idk if you do already or have access to one), they may not have the hundreds of years of literature that orchestras do but there is still some great band music out there worth playing and presenting. If you want to get into orchestral music you could learn clarinet or basson :) learning another woodwind will be easier now that you have learned saxophone. Good luck :)
I had the privilege of playing this with my youth orchestra more than a decade back. This was one of the very first symphonies that I played. Since I was sitting in the back of the 2nd violin section, I was adjacent to the brass and winds. It was a magical experience indeed.
The Waltz is phenomenal. The body movement really rounds out the rich tone with some playfulness. Made my day.
Amazing how this waltz fulfills the promise made by the waltz in the Third Symphony!
Given that the 2nd movt. is more or less the most emotionally convincing piece of art produced by a human, your mentioning of the 3rd comes off more or less as treason. To the Gulag!
@@netizencapetI agree with you about the second movement! As far as the waltz is concerned, I was only trying to highlight the degree to which Tchaikovsky had developed his art between 1876 and 1888! No offense meant, quite the contrary!
I can't describe how wonderful this symphony is. It's just full of colours, the melody, just bright in colours
I've loved T's music all of my life. 5th Symphony is probably my favorite of his compositions. Had never seen/heard this performance before and sorry it took me so long to do so. Excellent.

I just LOve it.. when I was in Austria I took the pic of his star on the walk.
And to think that Tschaikowsky was not happy with this work and thought it inferior! It is a masterpiece - and masterful delivered here! This even tops my beloved Karajan recording! A big BRAVO to the hr-Sinfonieorchestra and Manfred Honeck conducting!
He later changed his mind about the merit of his 5th. The work was having very successful premiers all over Europe which led Tchaikovsky to reexamine his assessment of his symphony.
Goodness me 😮😮😮 what inspired mad genius Pyotr Tchaikovsky to compose this triumphant symphony! Absolutely free reins of emotions, raw, yes, heart on sleeve! His compositions really bring out all the passion and skills of the orchestra 🤯💥 how skillful are these artists to bring to life the robust spirit of of his music! Bravo everyone! 🔥👏👏👏👏

_Has to be the best performance ever! When I was a kid, I would listen to it at night over and over on KQED. Heard the Boston Symphony live back in 1976 perform it live. Was, is, and will always be my favorite!_ 😍
One of the very first LPs I bought many years ago. I think that of all the Tschaikowsky symphonies this is the most balanced and heartfelt.
And I might add that it is very much like life with its ups and downs and triumphs.
a few years ago in our youth orchestra this symphony was basically all we ever talked about. Definitely one of my first symphonies I kept listening to over and over. Mind you, it's much easier with Spotify and KZhead now. I saw this performed in Nottingham last year, was a huge moment for me :)
Yes sir!
A DIVINE interpretation, in every respect! I'm in love with Honeck's tempi and dynamics!
Absolutely!!
People complain (rightfully) about conductors who wave their hands needlessly as if dancing... with Maestro Honeck I don't think this is the case. Everything he does seems to be calculated to have an effect on the sound (or some other aspect of the performance) without any unnecessary movements. This to me is the sign of a truly great conductor. I also love the elegance and grace with which he addresses the audience and musicians before, during and after the concert. Incredible
