Deidesheim is a rural town and a climatic health resort with 3772 inhabitants , which is located in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Bad Dürkheim in the northwest of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. Since January 1, 1973, the city has belonged to the Verbandsgemeinde of Deidesheim, of which it is also the administrative seat.
The village probably originated in the 9th or 10th century as a subsidiary settlement of the neighboring municipality of Niederkirchen, and with the construction of the prince-bishop-Speyer castle as the official seat, Deidesheim soon surpassed the older Niederkirchen in importance. In 1395, Deidesheim was granted city rights by the Bohemian and Roman-German King Wenceslas and has been considered a city since then - with the exception of the years 1819 to 1838.
Viticulture has been demonstrably practiced here since 770. At the beginning of the 19th century, Deidesheim was the first place in the Palatinate whose wineries began to engage in quality viticulture. Today, Deidesheim is one of the largest wine-growing communities in the Palatinate wine-growing region, viticulture is its most important economic factor next to tourism.
