A portable fish livewell I made out of a cooler, bilge pump, and PVC pipe. Runs off of a 12V battery. Project costs: Cooler $25, Bilge Pump $20, PVC $3. Total: Under $50.

These work really well, keep in mind that if you use this for keeping live bait ie: minnows, get a larger cooler, freeze some water in a gallon milk jug and put in the cooler, live bait likes cold water, vs letting the water temps get to 80 or above which will kill your bait .if you can find a small timer, attach that as well, run the the water for a minute, and turn off for 5 minutes, will save on your battery.

You ABSOLUTELY CANNOT have a live bait container with the pump motor submerged in the water. The pump generates heat and it will quickly heat the water and KILL live bait. With a little thru-hull plumbing, you can put the motor OUTSIDE.

I've got a 50L cooler container so roughly about the same size as this esky. I was considering buying an 1100 gph bilge pump as it's the same price as a 500gph or 750 gph pump on ebay. Is this overkill for such a system seeing your bilge pump has a capacity of 500gph? The following might sound like a silly question but an 1100gph bilge pump would obviously use more battery life than say a 500gph pump right? I'm looking at maximising battery life without sacrificing the oxygen flow through the water. Please help. Thanks in advance.

it will airate better if you just cut slots in the top pipe with a hacksaw blade the finer "nozzle" will spread the water out releasing more oxygen

Could just dip the water out a little then when it is low and a little lighter just pick the whole thing up and dump it. Make it with the pump in the middle-back and run the pvc pipe to each end like a T (on top with the holes) and another around low with no holes (rib-like) going around the end to the other side inside like a U. The whole assembly would sit in the cooler without suction cups, not tip over and it could be lifted out to fill or dump.

It comes with the pump and leads, the suction cups, a flexible hose that makes his 3 day plumbing job look stupid and a piece of PVC on the end the has slots in it that aerate better than just holes, he has taken a 37 dollar kit and managed to make it more complicated and costly.
