I agree. I remember when I was 13 or 14, and my father told me, "my only job is to give you shelter, feed you and pay your private high school fees." I was so wise for my age, that I thought that is "good enough." But now that I am older, I see that my father was "crazy" for telling me that. I have no relationship with him. At 18 I left home to go college, and I didn't see him again until I was 28, and we spoke on the phone less than 5 times. His relationship with me was as a "provider." So, when I started providing for myself (and being abnormally introverted, possibly schizoid) I didn't feel an emotional connection to him. He did his duty as a provider very well, and since I didn't ask to be born, I am not guilty and I accept our relationship as a fair exchange. However, I now also understand that the quality of my life would have been much better if he had invested more than "shelter, food and high school fees" on me. Sad!

I agree. I remember when I was 13 or 14, and my father told me, "my only job is to give you shelter, feed you and pay your private high school fees." I was so wise for my age, that I thought that is "good enough." But now that I am older, I see that my father was "crazy" for telling me that. I have no relationship with him. At 18 I left home to go college, and I didn't see him again until I was 28, and we spoke on the phone less than 5 times. His relationship with me was as a "provider." So, when I started providing for myself (and being abnormally introverted, possibly schizoid) I didn't feel an emotional connection to him. He did his duty as a provider very well, and since I didn't ask to be born, I am not guilty and I accept our relationship as a fair exchange. However, I now also understand that the quality of my life would have been much better if he had invested more than "shelter, food and high school fees" on me. Sad!
