  • Good suggestion from the person about the blue bulb. It's not just a lamp someone is paying for. It's a sculpture, a one off piece of art, beauty and craftsmanship that just so happens to be functional too. If people think a few thousand is expensive for your art, perhaps they should remind themselves that someone paid an obscene amount of money for a blue dot on a white canvas. 😉

  • That is, hands down, the coolest lamp I've ever seen! Not only by using Designer Epoxy's pigments, which were perfect, but the shape you gave it, Jim, was absolutely perfect. And while I understand that you'd have to charge an exorbitant amount to make a profit on one, those who have the funds to spend on something completely and utterly unique, won't blink at the price tag. I'd say put that on your menu of available products, with plenty of time so that it's not the only thing you're working on, the appropriate price tag for a specialty item, and I'll bet someone will snatch it up. If I had the funds, heck yeah, I would!!!

  • Oh, yes, the blue bulb makes it! Ah, I happen to do a lot of color by number art on my smart phone, and there are always a lot more bubbles than that in the aquatic scenes, so I say there's nothing to worry about with that. More bubbles might have been a plus in fact, going by that. Stunningly gorgeous work of art, as always!😊

Was it gonna be fsbric or resin.i just couldn't see you sewing a lanp shade,not that you could not run a sewing machine but i just dont think that is your main intrest. I can see why this shade is stunning. Beautiful work. Worth the wait.🎉🎉🎉

  • Jim, although you say that next week will be out of this world, this finished lamp has already achieved that. The use of the glow in the dark coloring and the mix which was achieved within the shade has created an underworld deep horizons effect. I must applaud your skills and the work which went into this lamp was commendable. I was glad you left the air bubbles in the shade they bring a diving dimension to the top of the bell dome. == just thinking of GI Joe under the dome swimming up to the surface == 🤿

    • Sorry to hear that and of course God does...Isaiah 11:6-9 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. Revelation 5:13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

    • I’ve got a black light now and will take a photo and post it in the community tab later this week. Thanks for the suggestion!

      @SpragueWoodturning@SpragueWoodturningАй бұрын
    • @@SpragueWoodturning The thing with blacklight that I'd be concerned about is the UV, but not all blacklight bulbs actually give off UV but still get that glow, which makes sense (but is beyond my understanding, or at least recollection). Cos UV rays of course damage our tissue (especially skin & eyes, dangerously so with UV from fluorescent & halogen bulbs) and also anything exposed for a while, like the resin of the lamp. That's definitely a factor in the eventual yellowing, crazing, & cracking. IF the bulb doesn't give off any UV (as, again, some "blacklight" bulbs don't) then no problem, but do note. Blue light, however, doesn't give off UV, so there's that. Also, true blue LEDs work better for the glow, ime, and also vs a blue cap over a white LED like the bulb you showed, which still gave great results so imagine! You can easily get one of those bulb retrofits that have a regular e27 screw-in but have several LEDs in blue and in cool white, the blue for that glow & the white for normal light. Usually sold as a grow light bulb or aquarium bulb. All this, feel free to take what I've said here & ask others, like if you have or use Discord, or any board (Reddit or something) that does aquariums or indoor plants would know, probably resin folks ought to have found this, though surprisingly I (personally, anyway) haven't seen it utilised in this way, to make stuff glow. Sorry that was long, but hopefully it might be useful, or point you in a good direction for this &/or future projects, to get that extra pop & take full advantage of that glow quality. Cos really, just a couple of blue LEDs can make the glow stuff GLOW full-bore without having to be dark (though it's more pronounced the less bright a room) and that can really make someone think twice about "glow in the _dark"_ parts. Final tip, technical info: in aquarium use, especially reef/saltwater tanks, the specific blue light used is called "actinic blue" (said like "uh'TINNic" or "ah"... not quite "æ" like "cat") and is 420nm to 460nm wavelength. (And inb4 "true" actinic, cos it matters not for this application.) This is different from the "blue" 20,000°K (as in Kelvin, colour temperature used for mostly full spectrum bulbs & their appearance, not the nm wavelengths of coloured LEDs), also known incorrectly as "20K" (would be "20k°K" or at least "20kK") ... Just ignore that stuff, mostly for halide/vapour bulbs & for full grow lamps with full-spectrum mimicry. Sorry, I never learned to be concise! :x

    • @@mookinbabysealfurmittens have a look under the community tab and tell me what you think. Yellowing could be a problem over time with the black light. Thanks again for the info!

Also, thank you for your feedback of cost for a mostly epoxy piece verses the chances of finding a buyer with really deep pockets. We are finding that most people don’t know what they are looking at and have no clue about the cost of materials, time and artistry needed to make it. They just want it for $5 or less. Great job!!!! I think the "reef" look isn't as striking in the shade as it is in the base due to the small amount of wood, but it makes sense that you couldn't use much due to the small amount of the burl you had to work with. It wouldn't have made sense to leave the wood out either, because it ties the top and the bottom together. In the end you definitely made the right choice. The new owner will LOVE it!

  • This is a great looking project! The shade goes with the base so well. I'm glad you had enough burl in the shade to reflect the "coral" of the base, even if it was not as much as you (or I) originally hoped. Also truly amazing how much the blue light makes a difference to the overall look, that addition definitely a winner. Designer Epoxy

  • Jim, the fact you had to go back to fix the top (in my opinion), was a happy accident for this lamp shade. I think all the extra you had to go back to do at the top, reshaped the top to make it less dome like and more lampshade like. I quite like it, very cool! Love to see a Tiffany inspire lamp shade with wood & stain glass like panels. And the blue light bulb made it perfect! Great video! 🖖🏽 Designer Epoxy ✨

I really love the blue light in it, you achieved your oceanic vision, Jim! $2-3k for a lamp is a bit out of my price range, but I'm sure others will given that it's custom! I mean, shoot, if they'd do it for a bowl set, why not a lap? Beautiful and fun piece! • The switch was meant for a 3way bulb and an incandescent bulb. The LED bulbs run at a different frequency that your eyes can see where incandescent run a full spectrum which is why they burn more power. I don't believe they make an LED tri-liggt for that switch, but if it's by a window, it should recieve enough natural light to glow. A great video as always Jim, looking forward to the next one. #thebucketstruggleisreal
