Air Raid Sirens in Lviv 🇺🇦

A truly jarring experience. But for the Ukrainian people, it ain't shit. The resilience of these people is amazing- they've chosen to stay in Ukraine while war is on their doorstep. And while Lviv feels safe 90% of the time, that 10% is really scary.

  • THE ROLE OF NATO With NATO, Western democracies have created an enormous instrument of power in the world. Although NATO member states account for barely more than ten percent of the world's population, they control almost 60 percent of all global military spending. NATO's leading power, the USA, has around 750 military bases worldwide. NATO states are also the largest arms dealers in the world; they are responsible for 70 percent of the global arms trade - weapons that make the many wars possible in the first place. There is no other alliance of states in the world that even comes close to having a comparable military alliance. But how do the "remaining" 90 percent of the world's population view such a concentration of military power in the hands of a few Northern states? Last year, the US Congressional Research Service found that since the end of the Cold War, the US has intervened militarily in other countries 251 times with the cooperation of other NATO countries, and this figure does not even include CIA operations or proxy wars. These military interventions are often justified by the expansion of democracy. But to my knowledge, not a single one of them has been able to establish a democracy; they have only left destruction, chaos, impoverishment and immeasurable human suffering in their wake. There is no other state or confederation of states that is even remotely responsible for so many military interventions in other countries. This year, the renowned Brown University presented a study of the war on terror since 2002 and came to the conclusion that this war has cost the lives of over 4.5 million people through its direct and indirect effects and has made 38 million people refugees. This means that this war must have cost the lives of at least four million civilians.

      @krepsht8997@krepsht899711 ай бұрын
    • It's individual how you react to the air raid. Some people do go to shelters each and every time the siren goes off. Some don't. I usually prefer to stay at home since I don't really consider the shelters around me to be safe. There can also be multiple reasons for a raid. Sometimes they turn it on just because of test-flights that the russian military planes do. So most of the time the air raid does not necessarily result in a shelling, that's why some people decide to ignore them for the most part.

    • America is allocating a fraction of their military budget for Ukraine. Not only does this decimate the Russians with zero Americans lives lost, it also benefits American arms dealers in the long run because countries are starting to buy more American weapons after seeing how effective they are in a modern warzone. America might be spending money but Ukraine is the one spending hundreds of thousands of lives.

      @vShoTzZ25@vShoTzZ256 ай бұрын
    • @@vShoTzZ25 Ukraine is going to spend lives regardless of whether we fund them or not if they want to resist the Russians. As far as Ukraine being the testing ground for our weapons, if I was to believe what our government has been telling us, Ukraine is getting mostly surplus or outdated military equipments and weapons from us, so there is little value in us testing out those weapons. With the Ukrainian economy being non existent since the start of the war, our money is also going toward running their government and not just their military. In fact, people who understand what is actually going on over there know who was behind the 2014 Maidan Revolution (hint, Victoria Nuland) and what was going on in the Don Bas. It’s too simplistic to just blame the whole conflict on Putin being a warmonger. Without NATO’s push for a new proxy war, the conflict in Ukraine would have ended a month after the invasion in one of the peace negotiations. Ukraine is now being pushed by NATO to negotiate and at this stage, they would still have to give up the same territories as they would have if they agreed to an earlier peace deal. Hundreds of thousands wouldn’t have died on both sides. As it is, hundreds of thousands have died so that our military industry complex can sell more weapons is morally corrupted, so I’m shocked that you actually think that is a good thing 🤦🏼‍♂️
