    • First time I got it, it just clicked, and I was immediately hooked! It's such a head game. Shoutout to the two random older skaters who spent their time teaching me and my friends how to do it correctly. I started on a huge mini. It was basically a real halfpipe, but without the vert. The first time I tried it with no instruction, I bodied HARD in front of a crowd. So glad those guys saw me and spent time teaching us how it's done. I might've never kept skating transition otherwise. There was no KZhead or Braille back then! If you didn't have someone to teach you, it was rough. Took me years and THOUSANDS of attempts just to learn to ollie and kickflip as a kid before I'd ever been to a park.

  • Overcoming fear is not easy, but hesitation is the worst thing. I learned the hard way when I hesitated doing a 360 on snowboard on an icy surface... I slammed badly, got a concussion (wasn't wearing a helmet then, bad move). The sooner you get it "over with" (the sooner you do the thing that scares you), the better. What's the worst that can happen? You slam? Put on some gear and do it. You bail? Do it again, right away. The old addage "getting back on the horse" exists for a reason, because if you don't it'll be worse. YOU CAN DO IT! BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! Aaron said it, it's all in the mind. There is no spoon.

  • I’ve been trying to overcome the fear of turning into a back disaster over the coping, and this video reminds me of how similar all of these fears are. But of course nothing is as scary as your first drop in. Eventually you realize that you just have to take your chances with the first throw. And then boom, your body knows what’s going on and it just starts to work.

  • Thanks for this video! I learnt a lot, both what to do and both what not to do - as a teacher also. I respond here as for your request; I've been teaching swimming and Kung Fu for many years, and the issue of overcoming fear myself and helping overcoming fear for a student - isn't something new for me. In my experience, very small steps, which include very little fear from the one hand, and therefore much more concentrated and relaxed mind from the other hand - in addition to many many many repetitions in each step result in both fun (and less "madness" which suits less people in the world) and more successful way - thanks to building patiently muscle memory. Cheering loudly many times might help the already very afraid person to make the scary step - but might also very distract him... which is the opposite of what we, teachers and supporting friends would like for them... As for me, I'm a 42 years old surfer who is trying to go down like you do on skateboard 😱 So i try to do it the most gradually i can - and most fun - with the least fear and danger in order to learn to control, as much as possible, each scenario in the safest way. In the end we gonna fall - it's inevitable - but if done correctly - more chances of staying healthy in one piece which also enables to continue training, rather than needing the time to heal. Another thing i notices is a difference between how you dropping in - versus what you taught to do: you place your front feet steadily on the board and only then lean forward (which i definately going to try!) Instead how you were teaching which is to both lean forward and only then place your front feet on the board and "kick" while you're already in the air dropping which seems much more crazier!! I hope what i wrote might be helpful - and thanks again for the video!!! 👏👏👏👏👏

  • man I still remember learning dropping in years ago and it is scary. pretty much the only advice I had was slam your foot down. I also got bodied a bunch of times in a mini, even after I already dropped in a lot, sometimes I would still just mess up and slam. so you will always get bodied sometimes in skating, you just have to get through it and try not to mess up and try to fall as gracefully as you can haha. but this was great to watch, gotta love watching someone improve and getting over fear. a lot of the fear is just never doing it before I guess, so it's like fear of the unknown, you just don't know until you have more experience.

  • I broke my spine when I was 12 and I tried dropping in on a minipipe the first time - I didn't lean forward nearly enough, my board went forward, I went back and landed full in the small of my back on the pipe, I was terrified of trying it in the first place but gave it a go, but I didn't have any of my mates who skated at the time to show me how to do this so I absolutely 100% understand Derek. The rest of you are proper bros for getting him through this though, it's properly intimidating, even just trying to do it on a flat ramp!
