COYOTES VS. AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIERS

Whenever wild animals encroach on our urban areas and start crossing paths with our domesticated pets, we start wondering if there are any safety issues we should be concerned about. We also are naturally inclined to worry about how well our dog would fair against a wild hunter.
Recently, I created a list of dogs best equipped to live in an environment with coyotes. A breed I didn't include was the American Pitbull Terrier. In this video, I explain why.

    • I live in NV and raise cattle, sheep, ducks and chickens and there are tons of coyotes around year too. I hear them every night but I have two Kangals that guard my animals. I’ve watched one of my kangals turn a coyote legs into wet noodles in a matter of about 10-15seconds. Then they circle it a few times to make sure it’s not getting up and then go back to guarding. Coyotes are their favorite chew toys…

  • I would not allow my bully to roam free without supervision in an area known to have coyotes. She doesn’t have the restraint nor strong enough recall if it did happen. She gets tunnel vision when it comes to her prey drive and want to protect her territory . She would most definitely get baited and get into a fight, then we’d both be going to the emergency room bc I’m gonna jump in and help my dog regardless. No matter how strong I think she is, she is not going to overcome a pack of wild dogs on her lonesome.

  • Just for reference. I own over 6 g bred working apbt. I live on property. All of mine are trained working dogs they are no joke. I have steel what's called raised kennels they're off the ground and high but have wood flooring with spaces so the shit falls through they're off the ground in wet and hot and they're full enclosed we call em shark cages because they're almost indestructible. Gauge is small enough that they cannot get their mouthes and teeth around the wire and damage their beautiful teeth. I have sprinklers set up and misters. In summer shade cloth goes up on the side to prevent heat in winter they'll get heated pads or straw depending on who don't chew their bed. I have two carpet mills (built custom) and a slat mill and I have 3 acres. It takes me over 2 and a half hours to properly run 6 dogs. Sometimes I don't have the time. I don't have kids the dogs are my full time hobby and commitment. Each kennel costs anywhere between 1200 to 1500 depending on my custom. I feed raw exclusively so this includes green tripe, organs and a shit tone of bones. Even the pedigrees cost ya money. Work the cost out before getting this breed. If ya poor or struggling rethink it this breed needs hella gear collars, chain spots, decent leashes and equipment, e collars and kennels. You'll end up with more heart ache in the end if you're not educated and prepared. Don't touch this breed if you're not going to invest, commit, and stay consistent.

      @juliusmorris5233@juliusmorris5233 Жыл бұрын
    • Yep they live as a pack, they do hunt as a pack herding, circling whatever prey there is. They draw the dog out to attack the one running, then they pack does ambush it, saw it happen. I am not talking about dogs trained to hunt them, and I have had those dogs even come up to my tree stand while I was in it

  • The American Pitbull Terrier is designed for combat, fighting against other canines, wild animals (big and small game). Dogmen seek for the highest level of determination by carefully selecting dogs with this trait. Purists say that the only way to test dog's qualities and prove "Gameness" is by making them fight in the pit. Others say that boar hunting also allows to test and prove it. Of course, the APBT can succeed in very high level obedience competitions. It is important to remember that the APBT was created for a specific task, the fight, so is designed genetically to this purpose. Strong-willed, if confronted, most will readily engage into deadly combat, aggression toward other animals... these characteristics come from its genetics. It is a dog for enthusiasts, knowledgeable persons of the "Bull-and-Terrier" family, responsible owners who can provide safety for their dog, themselves and the community.

They could be controlled with a whistle and a hand signal. My yorkies not so much. The big boys always protect the little dogs. Pits are great. We have had a few racoons that didn't make it in our yard but they never went after anything on the other side of the fence. They knew what property was theirs.

Actually I was one of the commenters of that other video who posted about the real apbt since I own one and I have a pretty much idea about the troubles i will get into if i get my dog loose in the yard. I never thought about that perspective when it comes to Choosing the pet for the coyotes. Since my area is not surrounded by such wild animals I didnt think about that specific point you mentioned and now that i watched this video I can tell you you are 100% right and aware of that breed. Great explanation and I can tell you all of us who owns the real apbt YES. we cant put the dog in a yard free and we can't let him in an area full of coyotes since all the purpose of the gamebred dog is to chase and prey fight every other walking animal. And whoever says the opposite doesnt own a true apbt. THANK YOU

  • Coyotes hunt and fight in packs. These animals work together and are vicious killers. I've seen what they can do. In a one on one fight a pit bull is probably going to win but it doesn't happen that way. Having worked in an area that was absolutely infested with Coyotes and having had to deal with the issues they caused I never saw a single Coyote go after a large animal by itself. I also rarely saw a pack of Coyotes go after a large animal in the daytime. They hunt at night. I'm sure it somtimes happens in daylight but its not common. Coyotes are very smart. They only want to fight when they have the odds stacked in their favor. Please keep your dogs safe . There are better ways to deal with Coyotes.

  • I have three APBT. I've also owned a (robust) American Bulldog and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. None are even remotely "gamey" BUT... it was my Staffordshire Bull at 38 pounds that actually killed an adult female coyote. It was a couple decades ago. Coyote darted out in front of my car at a cul de sac at a river access in rural Missouri. Cheri - all 38 pounds - jumped out of my car window (it was down) and hit the coyote in the neck and went in to a full role. NOTHING like that has happened before or since with any of my pooches. A reminder about the strength and power of the APBT and it's close relatives. Staffordshire Bullies are not exactly known for this behavior. Cheri's playmate was the cat and a rabbit for God's sake lol

  • Thank you for making this video. Even though the title "TEN BREEDS BEST EQUIPPED TO HANDLE COYOTES " may have led a few people to believe it meant fighting coyotes, I felt that the last video was more about breeds that are better at keeping coyotes at bay or deterring them rather than fighting coyotes or dispatching coyotes based on the breeds that were listed. Many of those breeds were guardian breeds rather than catch breeds or breeds referred to as game. Individuals that have guardian breeds will tell you such animal aggression and extreme prey drive to drop everything and go after a wild animal regardless of the situation would not make for the best dog in an environment where coyotes roam. With Pit Bulls, they appear to be better suited as dogs utilized on a hunt to subdue a specific animal rather than to secure an area.

    @Delightful_Addition@Delightful_Addition Жыл бұрын
    • Well they are a bit too slow to be good hunting dogs too- they really shouldnt be bred for anything else than fighting(which ofcourse should be illegal). At that point, just get another breed of dog and dont bother.

      @Greggah@Greggah Жыл бұрын
    • @@Greggah While they are not the fastest, I would not call them too slow. They have been recorded being able to go 34 mph. But with the kind of hunting they do, how fast they are is not a factor. They are catch dogs that are let go after something has been found and used to subdue it. They should, and are, bred for things other than fighting.

  • If a dog is tethered, then it is guaranteed to be a meal on a rope. Keeping a dog in a kennel is good so is a well fenced yard. To protect your in a kennel is best. Keeping a well fenced yard with 2 dogs is ideal. 2 keep coyotes out i would have 2 more larger dogs. Perhaps coyotes can enter a backyard, but maybe exiting one is more difficult. I think if you had 2 large dogs that are contained in the yard, they will have the upper hand.

  • @ 1:24 , the answer to your question is quite simple. For the same reason so many people are interested in mutual combat amongst humans. For example boxing, mma, etc. It's In some of our DNA just like in some of these animals. For the same reason a true game dog would mouth a coyote untill one of them was mouthing no more vs a hound dog who would bark up a storm and cur-snap at a coyote. Of course there are exceptions to the rules in all species including humans... And honestly those of us that know know the REAL capabilities of most dog breeds in their truest forms don't ask these questions we just know. But that is a minority group. The rest are just curious people and dare I say ignorant people. And the ignorants are a danger to animals. Just my 2 cents.

I know for a fact that he can rip apart any dog/animal even twice his size but as zeek said, I'm a pet owner, I would like do dog sports once he's older but for now he lives with me in my apartment. I wouldn't wanna take him to the vet non stop. It's not only breaking the bank, but heart breaking as well. I love my dog and would hate to see him hurt. I didn't get him to fight other animals and love my dog more than anything else. Keep in mind, he is trained well with a good recall but still the only time he gets out of his crate is when I'm around. I wouldn't leave him alone with my mom either as she won't be able to handle his constant high energy. Ideally speaking these dogs should be kept in a chain setup.

  • Just wanted to add that coyotes rarely attack alone…they will get the dog to follow them and then the rest of the pack attacks and will kill the dog together…

  • The video is said and posted PITBULL vs coyotes , with that being said yes your PITBULL will engage in combat if needing to protect himself or it's owner , who in there damn right mind would just go coyote hunting with a PITBULL , number 1 , you shouldn't owned the dog , 2 that's not what you should have your dog for , 3 you must be a person of animal cruelty . Now with that being said APBT are natural aggressive fighting dogs , fought in pits , to show off its strength ,traits and attributes , these dogs where bred to do just that , FIGHT , to never back down from its opponent to any of a kind of breed or wild animal , needless to say we all know PITBULL aren't super dogs , but it is good to know your breeds background family tree , if it comes from an aggressive family or not , if comes from an aggressive background , you will have a harder time to trained and control you PIT meaning a lot of time and energy of your life needs to be strictly on it or the money you must have , cuz they are hard headed and stubborn , but good family pets and hard dogs if giving that reward .

  • My dogs are my kids. I would do everything in my power to make sure a coyote fight never happened. I live in a high coyote area . Good fencing is an absolute must. I have an African Boerboel male, A German shepherd male and a female Cane Corso. I've had working group dogs all my life. " Good fences make great neighbors " . Coyotes are just trying to make it in this world like every other god created creature.

    • Well said, my king shepherd and I agree. I live in the country, where wolves and coyotes are common and thrive... my dog's yard is fenced in , 100 ft × 40 ft x 6 ft high and he never sleeps outside. During are hikes, he has his large "3" inched spiked double collar on and is of leash 75 % of the time. He is very loyal and obedient and so far with the Lord's protection, no incidents. 🐾 At night sometimes they try and bait him by coming close to the property and howl and yip and yap..

  • It all depends on the Pit Bull and the coyote. The Pit Bull if it's in good condition of good age also count's on the other hand coyotes have alot of stamina could go on an on until you kill it an some Coyotes are strong with good diet's.

  • I do agree with u saying it depends on the particular pitbull. The blood line, and size of the pitbull is important. Some blood line have more aggressive temperament. Sum Are natural Born killers. I agree with u saying they are escape artists lol. I agree u saying that u should protect ur dog and try to avoid encounters with wild coyotes. Don't want ur dog to be intentionally harmed. Yet if it came down to a fight between such a threat. U still want ur dog to be able to stand his own ground and protect u or ur family as well. I Personally rather have the aggression and long winded / high energy dog such as a pitbull. I disagree with u saying that they are ALot of dogs with more agility or a pitbull lack agility. Not many other dogs has a higher agility level than a American Pitbull terrier. They jumped the highest. Run faster than most dog breeds. Their Like in the top 12 of guard dogs. Pitbulls are Natural working dogs. Pitbulls served in the War, hunt wild gain, bred for ratting, bred for fighting to the death, work with police force, participate in dog Olympics or tournaments. If trained right they will put their life on da line every time. Plus with the ability to lock their jaws is a advantage other breeds rarely have. Plus the American Pitbull is more muscular than All breeds besides the American Bully. they pull cars , trucks, drag tires. An American Pitbull terrier is like wat a professional Athlete is to ur average person. Wayyyy more fit / in shape than most breeds. So idk why a American Pitbull terrier is not suitable enough. I've known a single Pitbull take out several coyotes. So can't ever underestimate a Pitbull mane. Like u said just depends on the size , temperament, aggression, relentlessness, endurance, and intelligence. ✅

The dog is a love and isn't a mad crazy beast but like my German shepherd he protects his pack and territory.hes the neighborhood pup when it comes to kids and women but will protect against men or animals he doesn't know just like my shepherd and Weiner dog. • A lot of people either live where the coyotes are small or really have no idea about coyotes... Yes a pit bull can win a fight against the smaller ones. But the bigger ones would be very challenging and would most likely go in the Coyote's favor more often. This isn't even considering the fact you are talking about a wild animal and hunt in packs at times. We have coyotes in our area. We also are going to have goats so we are getting rotties... We have one but we are adding 2 more because we know coyotes don't fight fair. I really hope it never comes to them to having to defend our property against coyotes. To the point I use a crossbow on any of them that come close when I'm around and never would release him or them in the future. There's no sense to risk my dogs if I can avoid it.

  • This video needs to be watched by more and more people. Two underrated and totally true statements are made here that most "pit bull advocates" either deny or ignore: 1. Pit bulls are not pets. They are working dogs. 2. Pit bulls are animal aggressive. They will attack other animals. It should be added that real American Pit Bull Terriers is what the man is talking about and what is showed in the video, not Amstaff mixes or bully mutts. Not everybody can afford or knows where to get an authentic dog of this breed, WHICH IS A GOOD THING. They are not for the average pet owner. The problem of attacks by bull-type mixes is already very serious the way it is, you don't even want to imagine how much worse it would get if APBTs were owned by poorly prepared, poorly informed regular people. You shouldn't confuse their eagerness to please their owners with being inoffensive. They love their owners and people they live with, they tend to be friendly to strangers to a certain extent, but an unprepared person will not be able to prevent or break up an attack on another dog, or will likely get badly injured if he/she tries.
