  • This is the only build I have seen where they were smart and insulated the floor 1st. It will be so much more comfortable in extreme temps outside.

    • You are absolutely right. 👍 It is very comfortable. We had temperatures around freezing / 0°c, and inside, without heating, it stayed 16°c. At night that is perfect for sleeping. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! ❤️👍

    • Yeah, you are right, it is a nice house without mortgage or rent! Quite a few have said it before, but to be honest we did not make it to "get away". For us this is just a new phase in our lives, looking for something more, something else then just working 9 to 5 and paying +50% of our income to rent/mortgage. Now we have less income, but we also need less. But we get so much in return. Thanks for your kind comment ❤️👍, and we hope to see you with the next video!

  • Tip, rather than using expensive props to hold timber to the ceiling while the glue drys, just use a long piece of timber on an angle. Knock it in place with a hammer and it will act like a wedge between the floor and the piece you're gluing to the ceiling.

  • Everytime I see a shipping container build I wonder what its really like in the coldest and hottest months to live in with all that steel conducting the temperature into the space? Would like an update about it once you move in for a while. I built something very similar and been living in it 4 years now and will never go back to a regular house, you won't regret it. Even if your heating a cooling bills are off the charts :) You went to a lot of effort to put a deck on the roof, are you not putting solar up there?

    @jedics1@jedics113 күн бұрын
    • You will not believe how comfortable it is inside the container! With the sun blasting it stays nice in there until around 16.00 hour. After that it is the same temperature as outside. But I understand your wonder, without isolation it would have been unbearable inside. And the roof also functions as an umbrella. Architects tell me that thats the best way to keep it cool inside. There will be solar panels, but I have a trick up my sleeve. But that is a story for next time 🫣😄👍👋 Thanks for you comment and support! ❤️

  • Do you have some type of air filtration set up? As airtight as it looks you need clean air in it. There will be alot of humidity in the air from your breath,getting into the walls and woodwork. I guess you could leave a window cracked open or maybe the skylight. Also a container would make a great cooler and freezer. The survivalists would love this.

    @claytonsimplot9554@claytonsimplot955411 күн бұрын
    • Wow, those are quite a few great comment and questions packed in a "short" text. Amazing, love it, thanks! There is no air filtration, we open windows, we have a CO2 sensor (never rang) and our heater uses the "moist" inside air and transports it outside. Also a home-weather station, which measures humidity, always a smiley face there, so it should all be fine. You are the second to comment on humidity and clean air. So there should be a link, a reason or deeper thought behind it. Do you know what it is? And yeah, I have talked to a couple of "preppers" who were very interested indeed. Thanks for your message and apologies for the long reply 🫣👍❤️

Can an untrained/non engineer person do all these activities? Apartly I like the device to apply adhesive/gum. It is easy to use.

No claustrofobic feelings for us, but perhaps for some it might. 3. No taxes, just roadtax. 4. I am untrained and have little to none building experience, so I would say yes😄👍. • hehe, ok, now picture... building the "home" but keeping it within the diameter of the container... with container walls over the windows that can be retracted, container roof over the roof that can be opened to form awnings over either side. Built on a 40' shipping container... thats still... a shipping container.. So. you button it down... and have it... shipped... to your camp site, rail shiped, boat shipped, truck shipped... you just pay the shipping cost and insurance... drive to the camp site, and meet it there.

    • @@uglysjourney Its a shipping container, its designed to be shipped :). Rather then driving from say, New york to florida, ship it there, then fly to florida and got to the property. Just "rent" places and stay there for weeks on end. Heck, might even be able to load it on a train and... use IT as a private train car for cross country trips. then have it unloaded at the destination. Now here is the key thing... yes you are "paying" to have it shipped from point to point... BUT... you are not driving it. it is "cargo" so if it, objects in it, are damaged, its covered as cargo insurance. Theres no wear and tear on "your vehicle" you could even for example dedicate 8-10' of a 40' container for "vehicle storage garage"... and have a vehicle dedicated to travel with it. or vehicles... ebikes, mopeds, scooters, small cars. Smart cars only 8.8 feet.

  • Interesting approach, i am wondering why you made a tounge and groove box inside, but no plumbing or electrical in the walls? Normally in a house you lay down under floor heating, hvac, plumbing, electrical and ventilation. Then clad, as this is a sealed system now and sleeping in it your CO2 levels are going to be an issue, sure you can open a window, ok if its 15-20°C but a missed opportunity given a shipping container is robust enough for being submerged at sea.

    • Hi thanks for your opinion and comment! To answer your question I could ask you to watch next weeks video, but will not do that. I will use a raised floor and internal walls to route everything. First this helps with accessibility (not so experienced, so can correct mistakes), but also enables me to build without an exact plan/lay-out. And second I wanted to have the insulation 100% intact. All in all quite happy with the results! The CO2 comment I do not understand. Can you explain/elaborate a bit? How is this container different than a room in a house for instance. Like to hear what you say, so please let me know! Cheers for the support and comments!! 👍👍🍻

      @uglysjourney@uglysjourney13 күн бұрын
    • Your own home has ventilation as part of its construction to reduce mold, damp and remain habitable, hopefully your house is not 6x2.5sqm A container is a steel box designed for cargo at sea and you are having 4 or 5 people inside a sealed box. Great for insulation, but a bit like breathing into a paper bag you raise the Carbon dioxide levels above what is normal.

      @fraserwright9482@fraserwright948213 күн бұрын
    • When you keep everything shut yes, then you are right. But why would we keep everything shut? Even in cold temperatures we have windows open, works very well. And added to that we have a heating system that uses the "damp" inside air and blows that out of the box. All in all we are very happy and so is our temperature/home-weather-station, monitors inside humidity as well, always well within normal. Hope this helps and if not, then lets agree to disagree. Have a good day! 👍❤️

  • How's the condensation? Boards that are in direct contact with the metal will get wet and grow mold.

    @vladd2023@vladd202311 күн бұрын
    • Hi Vladd, thanks for your concern! 👍😄 I think you are talking about a cold-bridge. When the difference between inside and outside temperatures is very large. I.e. Inside +20°c, outside -10°c. Then water will form on the inside. Like a cold can of coke in summer. To prevent a cold-bridge the insulation needs to be thick or good enough. My insulation is good enough for temperatures around -10°c. So there is no issue with condensation yet. Except 1 point and that is the handle of the Outbound door. That gets extremely wet, it has a cold-bridge (poor design by them). Hope this helps! Please let me know? ❤️👍

  • Great video! Maybe a stupid question, but how is the container fixed to the chassis? Would it glide to the front and crushing the cabine when there is a front facing accident?

    @bram3570@bram357011 күн бұрын
    • Hi Bram, good question on security, thanks! The container is fixed using twist-locks. These are designed to hold the container in place and be manually operated (twisted). Second the sub-chassis "curves" up and sits as well between the cab and the container, effectively "protecting" the driver. 🚚 This last system is not used in all container trucks, I have heard of a couple of deaths in the way you describe it. It "always" happens like this: it is busy, but not overly so. Suddenly a traffic jam starts. There is a heavy truck in front. The fatal accident truck stops relatively close to the truck in front. And behind a heavy truck in full speed hits the fatal accident truck. Driver has no chance, sandwiched between his container and the truck in front. So yeah, good point and thanks for the compliment. Does this help you? ❤️👍

  • Just glue the foam sheets on the sea container then the wood the foam has the compressive strength on the floor it does not compress between the timber it just needs support at the entrance. Same with the walls and ceiling use glue not spray foam they glue aircraft together. Better insulation, cheaper, quicker. Same with the walls and ceiling It is how SIPs structural insulated panels are made and they work well. No need to make little individual ones with poor insulating expensive wood between each small one. Or save the work and just use SIPs it is the same price as the sea container for new panels their are joiners designed for 90 degrees and corners the panels are custom made with no cutting needed. I convert buses so am stuck with the wall and ceiling frame but just add foam and ply to the floor with a strip of timber at the front step thats all, thicker flooring can be used if needed with all the money saved and cupboards attached to it. I use a bus as they are mobile with a cheap permit and stealth if you leave the outside stock none of that applies to a sea contained with holes for windows.

    • Thanks for your question! I think I understand why you would ask it. Before I answer I need to say this, I am from Europe and use Kilogram in my answers. The truck can carry 12 tonnes (kg). It is 12 tonnes. A conventional plastic sandwich panel EU camper weighs around 3 tonnes. A true overlanding truck will be about the same if not heavier. The thing is that I have used a relatively small truck for the weight, I would like to have a bigger/stronger truck. Hope this helps, if not please feel free to let me know. Thanks! 👍👋

    @princeabraham-gk6gb@princeabraham-gk6gb17 күн бұрын
    • 👍 Thanks, comments/questions like these help me continue making videos. Quick answer, yes the container weight is 2 tonnes. A bit longer answer: my truck can have a total of 12 tonnes. 7 for the truck, that leaves 5 for the build. The build is 5 tonnes, fully loaded (600lit water i.e.). So that is OK. To be honest I expected it to be a bit less..... 🫣. Then to compare with a different box build. Usually they start with a hefty subframe (in my case the subframe is the container). Walls are aluminium or some sort, lighter, but still inside they, usually, need steel framing for support. So it should not be a massive difference. Hope this helps, please let me know if it did? Or ask another question if you like! Cheers for leaving a comment 🍻

    • Thanks for adding your concern and experience! And you are right, moisture is a big "enemy". 💦😭 For that reason I used "waterproof" OSB (it can cope with a bit of water) and I have drainage below. So with this I expect the water, if any, would not cause an issue. Also you can see I did not seal the insulation layer below the OSB. This will also help to "minimize" water exposure.
