Great Grey Owls with the Nikon Z6II and 500mm PF. Owls are awesome!
This outing was photographed with the Nikon Z6II and the Nikon 500mm Pf (Mostly) It is owl season and this is a quick reminder that the owls get a lot of pressure and that we should spot the signs when the owls are getting stressed out.

It's Friday. That means a video and poetry from Bayou Josh! Thanks for the photos, video, poem, and thoughts.
Ol Robert Frost. he has a poem for everything. Thank you, 🙂
Beautifully filmed and narrated. Lovely footage band great pics. We are indeed luck
Many thanks!
Ethics in photography are such a difficult issue to discuss without sounding like one is preaching. Well done, message delivered and received. Also, thank you for the amazing images gathered while respecting the owls. We had a situation close to my home where a dozen photographers camped out under an owl for over 5 hours. One got tired of waiting for the owl to move and started to pound on the tree the owl was roosting in. Thankfully, our local law enforcement got involved and placed barriers around the area to keep photographers at a reasonable distance. Obviously, not all photographers take the time (or care) to understand their subjects. Keep up the great work Josh.
Oh my goodness. the nerve of people. geez. thanks Don.
Hahaha! You pulled out the bazooka 600mm. Thx. Nice video and subject.
so heavy!!! Lol. thanks Bob.
Pure magic!
😊
JOSH-- My o my what have you done! You my friend have a video with your Z6II & 500pf thats second to none! This video makes me miss a place I've never been! Randy Bocksnick(Montana)
So glad you enjoyed it Randy. Thank you my friend
Lol, your comment about the owl looking at you reminded me of a time I herd a loud thud against our back window. I got up to investigate and found a hawk sitting in the yard. So I grabbed my camera and to took a couple of pictures. The look that the hawk was giving me was something else. It was like, come on punk! I can take you no problem. Now get out here and lets dance. I figured it was probably not a good idea to provoke it. 😄😄😄 As always thank you for sharing!!
those looks are so incredible. I love it.
You know why I like your channel? It's because you talk about the joy and wonder of this hobby we share. I always feel uplifted and positive after I watch your videos. That inspires me to shoot more. So, thanks Josh and keep 'em comin.
Will you just made my day! Thank you so much
Awesome video Josh! And so many interesting thoughts Have a nice weekend Josh and thanks for sharing Ronny
Thanks Ronny! You too!
Love the analogy of someone sleeping at the foot of your bed. Thank you Josh for using your platform to spread the good word about respecting owls. As someone who loves owls and tries to photograph them when I can, I have witnessed disappointing behavior exhibited by other photographers so seeing your message being spread to your audience gives me great joy. Great video as always Josh.
I work 12 hour night shifts in a busy overwhelmed hospital as a Respiratory Therapist. I'm also a portrait & conceptual photographer... I have never shot wildlife, but love viewing wildlife photography. Been crazy busy at the hospital the last few months so no time for cathartic photography days when off. However, thanks to you, when I get off a crazy shift and I'm feeling hollow or empty inside, I watch your videos instead of drinking a beer. Your work is beautiful and just watching your latest videos brings back some of my lost emotions and feelings and allows me to cry and feel whole again. Got off this morning after a horrible night and feeling completely numb, this video of the grey owls was all I needed to watch and recover some feelings before going to bed. Thank you so much for this video and your other videos! I hope to be back in the studio and creating more art with my camera once things slow down.
It fills my heart to hear that these little projects are connecting with friends that way. I completely sympathies with your situation and want to encourage you to remember that life is all about seasons. It won't be long before you enter a season of rest that allows you time to enjoy the things that bring you joy. hang in there my friend. Thank you so much for taking the time to drop a line. 🙂
It's the second time I'm watching one of your videos and I have to admit that I love the Zen atmosphere. Thanks for sharing your passion.
Thank you so much for watching. So glad to hear that you’re enjoying them.
Nice one. I love photographing Owls. So rare in Iceland wish we had more but one day I Will travel to see the great grey Owl . Wonderful video Mate
You should! thank you my friend.
Awesome birds and photos!
Many thanks!
Owls are my absolute favorite ❤️
they are so magical.
Great stuff Josh! Important stuff to talk about too :)
thanks brother.
Gorgeous owl. It's a pity we don't have such owls in Crimea..
I am sure you have some beautiful creatures there that we'd love to see. 🙂
Class Shots👌👌👌👍👍
Another well done video. Recently I've retired from the greatest job ever getting paid to do photography for the US Army. That being said I've got more time on my hands so I follow a lot of photographers on KZhead. Many of them are redundant. However I can honestly say I've always watched your videos to conclusion. I think it's that mellow voice. Keep up the good work.
Great shots Josh. What a beautiful bird.
thank you Leo.
OK found your channel after watching your Bird Burger interview. Enjoyed this video - the story , the perspective, the message about being responsible sharing time with the owls. My wife and I shot Nikon stills for years. About 3-4 years ago we transitioned to video and now shoot Canon cinema cameras, while I still shoot some stills with R5 (we are on YT as Glatz Nature Productions). One thing you said on Bird Burger that really struck me: “getting better” for you is about “telling stories better.” So true! We are just learning the video craft and it’s super challenging. Looking forward to more of your content. Really like your style. Keep up the good work Josh!
thank you my friend. much appreciated.
Wonderful video thank you. I also have to say, thank you for your flawless diction, I am Costarrican, so as English is not my mother tongue, you are very easy to understand for a non-English speaker 😊. You write very well your stories. Thank you again. Great images, by the way.
You're very welcome!
Josh: Absolutely spectacular shots! AMAZING! And I love your calm, soothing narration. Well done!
Thank you kindly! Glad you enjoyed it.
What to say? Great owls 😉
😀
I seen great photos and videos of owls , but the way you narrate the videos and show the photos is like you and right there with you looking ,enjoying that moment in time. Thank you again for your great videos
thank you so much Daniel. Glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful imagery Josh, such amazing birds! Thanks so much for mentioning the reminders on Owl etiquette, it's so easy to get caught up in photographing these gorgeous birds, becomes easy to forget about the birds' needs. Again, beautiful imagery and wonderful video!
Thank you so much Jimmy. I really appreciate it.
😍 Thanks for sharing such a wonderful moment and words of wisdom.
thank you for watching my friend.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful owl and totally agree with your message.
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it Johanne.
one of your BEST videos great job Thanks Josh
Thank you so much Anthony
Your narration with the compelling visuals make me look forward to your film every week :)
thank you so much my friend.
Owls are one of my favourite. Along with Red Cardinals, Blue J , Chickadee etc. Love your videos. I retired from trucking a year ago and bought an R5 to wonder the woods.
Fun times! congrats on retirement. that's a wonderful way to spend retirement!
Some years ago I traveled from NY where I live to Canada to see and photograph Great Gray Owls. It was a magical experience.
It really is!
Wish we get these beautiful owls by me ...They are absolutely stunning...Great video Josh 👍
They are! thank you.
Mythical creatures! Terrific tag line. With the mouse, real behaviour. Based on narration, you were in a great mood. I’ve never actually seen an owl in the wild. Leopard in tree, but no owl. Thank you.
I'd love to see a leopard in a tree. goals.
@@BayouJosh “Make a plan” is a famous saying in South Africa. Saw the leopard in Kruger park. Recommended highly, no guarantees. Do put it at top of your list. You won’t regret it. That I can guarantee.
My favorite bird is my last Lifer. And this week that was an Emperor Goose.
that is the right perspective to have. keeps you looking forward.
Another great video. Thanks Josh.
Thank you Spence. 😊
Non seulement vos images sont superbes mais la qualité de votre narration l'est tout autant. Vous êtes très talentueux Josh et vous avez tout mon respect. 👏👏👏🙏
Owls are tough to find, in the last month was lucky to get some shots of a Barred Owl only saw it 3 times, once perched on a dead tree stump and the other times saw something move in the corner of my eye and it was an owl in flight which luckily landed in an area where I could get a few shots. When they are stationary surrounded by trees they blend in so well, good luck finding them but when you do enjoy the moment it may be a long time before you see one again. Glad the opportunity presented itself to you, thanks for the video as always.
Practice your hooting skills. if you get good at it, they will come right to you.
@@BayouJosh I know a few people who use bird Apps to play their sounds to attract them. I am not one of them. What is your opinion on doing this.
Awesome Josh
I was out yesterday at a local reservoir, while relocating my tripod mounted 600 mm to capture some ducks, an Bald eagle flew overhead. Had it not been for my second camera slung over my back I would have missed the few shots I captured of this beautiful bird in flight! Later I captured a Golden Eagle on a perch. What a great day! Keep up the great vlogs!
Awesome Day Mark. thanks brother.
So amazing! You are a true professional! I am waiting to receive my Z6ii next week.
You are too kind Peter. Not sure how professional I am. 😉
Love the drone footage!
thank you Fernando.
Beautiful images of the great grey Josh! And also a nice message. Keep making good content. Cheers!
Thank you my friend
Awesome video and shots. I really like the immersive style of your videos. I felt like I was right there with you. "Romanticizing the experience" is what it is all about for me, pics come next. Well said.
I am so glad you are enjoying them Jason. thank you so much. that really means a lot.
What absolutely fabulous, beautiful birds. I am very envious. Another great video. Thanks
I get the envy. I spent the first 20 years of my birding life being envious of folks that had GGO's close by. they are wonderful to see.
what a beautiful creature - TY for sharing Josh.
🙂
Absolutely beautiful video! I hope that I may get the chance to photograph one of these magnificent creatures!
Thanks Josh for sharing your encounters with these magnificent birds. Owls are few and far between down here in Oz land and it sure is magical being able to watch your encounters. Thanks again. Bruce.
Thanks for watching Bruce.
Wow. I have been trying for one of these for way too long. Great job Josh
it took me my whole life up to last year. I get it.
Very interesting
Nice video as always Josh. Had the opportunity to photograph an Indian Scops owl, a pair of jungle owlets, and a brown fish owl. Felt lucky to see these 3 in one trip.
that is fantastic.
I think your my favorite bird photographer from Idaho.
😀
@@BayouJosh I like my humor like I like my martinis.. dry. Keep up the great work, and its really great. Refreshing and totally enjoyable take on the whole hobby.
Thanks Josh for taking us along with you on this beutiful Owl day.. Your videos are so motivating.. Keep them coming friend..
Thank you! Will do Jamie.
Stunning images and as always a peaceful moment in my crazy day. Thanks Josh.
Glad you enjoyed it. so I see you got your toy. I am still sitting and waiting.

Beautiful video of important message of photographing owels 👍 I se on Instagram ofen many picture of the same owel and seen when 20-30 photographer are surouding it! I canot like that kind photographing! Same thing whit the Kingfisher on winters when they try to survive the cold day and photographers are dissturbing its fishing! I know it isnt everybody but many so i scroll past ofen owels and Kingfisher pictures 😕
Glad you enjoyed it. I totally get what you are saying.
Great videos
Thank you Randy.
Thank you, Josh. Your videos brighten my day. Winter there looks beautiful, but here roll on the summer.
I'm always ready for spring right as winter is ending. and ready for winter when summer is ending. beautiful cycle. ☺
Great video!! 🦉🦉
Thank you 🤗
I try to go where most won't go or not go to hot spots for photographers. Not all are disrespectful, but its getting difficult to find areas where us humans dont F things up for nature. It's sad to witness. The baiting, the disrespect, the added noise, the stressing of wildlife. All of which why I prefer to be alone. Even if i dont get a shot. Great reminder, josh. Outstanding shots and a very deserving 10k subs.
I definitely like the being alone part!
@@BayouJosh you and me both lol 😆
Another beautiful video. And the story is beautifully told. I can watch it for hours.
thank you so much Martin.
I really enjoyed the video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Congrats on 10K!
Thank you!! 😀
You’ve inspired me and coincidentally my 6 year old has taken to bird spotting, so we’ve been out together. Today, whilst sitting waiting for the birds, camera and tripod at the ready, a robin came by. He flitted from one tree to the next, then totted up within a foot of my foot. Flew back to his tree, posed for me and then went on his way. A very pleasant lunchtime break, with a visit from the friendly local robin red breast.
that sounds like the perfect lunch break.
In Costa Rica, we don't have the GGO, but we have The Resplandecent Quetzal, In the last day of december I past all day taking pictures of this beutifull bird, so I can undestand that feeling that you describe, so I take a few hundreds of pictures, the most away of the bird so I don't boder him... I can past all my life just shoot this bird, is geat to see it. But Looking this beutifull pisc of you, I have a new target... it is this magnificente GGO, so Josh as always great video! I hope soon can see an take a picture of this owl. thake care.
Thank you Alvaro. I hope I can make it to Costa Rica soon.

What an incredible video!! Thanks for bringing it all to life. Letting others experience what some many never, but maybe boost their ambitions to get out and search! KILLER IMAGES as well!!!
Thank you Rase. I sure appreciate it brother.
Beautiful shots as always man! 👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you so much 😀
🥰😍 OMG, how beautiful and lucky you. Incredible you could sneak up so closely. We have all kinds of them where I live, but super shy and on impassable terrain. Our forest are tripple as dense. You hear them, related to the sub species (day/night activity), all day and night but you never see them 🙈
that is typically the way they are in the summer. they are much more approachable in the winter.
@@BayouJosh Unfortunately that’s not like so in Switzerland 🇨🇭 and Principality of Liechtenstein 🇱🇮
We don't have Great Gray's here in Kentucky. But we have other owls and I can say 100% an owl day is a great day. We have one old friend we've seen at the same spot back in the woods for the past 2 years. We protect that spot because we don't want to make him (or her) restless. It is a beautiful creature and makes my heart skip a beat when we see it. We rarely go looking for owls but we say "owls are where you find them". Yes, an "owl day" is always a good day.
Indeed.
ROFL 4:05 yeah something big happend. LOL Josh,. didnt expect that. 😁
I can't believe it took someone this long to comment on that moment. I was laughing my A** off. 😆
@@BayouJosh 😄
There is something spiritual about just quietly watching. I find that the birds kind of forget about me if I just stay still
It really is a beautiful experience.
Thanks for another great video Josh!
Thank you for watching brother
Excellent presentation, Josh. Your images and commentary have inspired me to seek out owls! Love it!! Thank you!
thank you My friend.
Thanks for making these interesting informative videos that capture the feelings and experiences we are lucky to sometimes have, gold, keep it going, you tell a good tale and take some great shots. Subscribed from Australia.
thank you so much Paul. thanks for tagging along.
Nice video! I got to see 4ish in Yellowstone last September. Breathtaking and got my favorite ever photo there
They are amazing creatures 😊
What a great video, great topic, great content and beautiful footage. Just a few days ago I came back to Lexington Kentucky after about a week north of Duluth Minnesota in the Sax-Zim bog to look for the great gray owl among other boreal and winter birds. I was quite fortunate to come across many in my time there. It’s good to know I’m not the only one who feels The moment is magical and significant when in the presence of a great gray owl.
It really is magical.
I love the images, the video and the narrative. You discussed an important topic in a very kind, yet clear, way! I've always wanted to start a KZhead channel but didn't know where to start. When I found your channel, I thought to myself....this is the style of video I can do! So I did it. Posted my first video last week, but you were the inspiration I needed. So thanks for just showing up and doing a great job.
Well that is awesome. I'm going to check it out.
@@BayouJosh Thank you! If you ever want to come to Florida where there are more birds than people, let me know and I'll take you to some incredible places...;-)
I’m sure you could’ve found a way to include that Frost poem, Baby. Oh, well…There’s always next time. LoL

I love this! I get that same feeling when I come upon any raptor. Like you described, I have found myself mesmerized for hours and not wanting the experience to end. Thanks for sharing!
It is a magical experience.
Great video as always Josh! I have yet to encounter the GGO so this was very enjoyable. Had a wonderful encounter with a GHO this summer. That experience will always stay with me. Cheers from Eastern Washington.
Those GHOs are magical as well. thanks for watching.
Oh my god, beautiful, magical. Most likely one of your 6 best pictures of the year. And again a great episode. Thanks Josh!
Wow, thanks!
Those GGO are amazing, our owls in Australia are very much nocturnal except when they’re flushed from their daylight roosts by other birds (we have many very aggressive and territorial birds that won’t tolerate a sleeping owl in their patch). Another wonderful video Josh.
thank you Ruben.😀
If we hadn't been watching your video we would never have been able to see the great gray owls and photograph them. I can't tell you what an amazing experience it was. It was our first time seeing a great gray owl and we were so excited we could hardly stand it. They are so magnificent and we have you to thank. We love your videos and we enjoyed meeting you and Katy. Former Louisianans, Doug & Carolyn Blackburn
It was so great to meet you two as well. Katie and I felt so fortunate that we were able to experience that with you. Thank you so much for tagging along. 🙂

Great video Josh! Good time to be had for sure. Thank you for reminding us all to respect the subjects we photograph.
Thank you Kurt. It is wonderful to spend time with them. I have to govern my own desire more than anything,
watching a raptor like that is an unique experience, and I think I might stay hours under a tree to photograph one of them. Thanks for sharing!! You've got a new subs 😉
Phenomenal Images of the OWLS! Thanks for spending all that time out in the cold so I can enjoy the images and video in my nice warm house here in the desert of Arizona! Photography and Hunting both take so much time in the field that most people don't realize the time investment to be successful. Thanks for your time, and respect for the birds.
thank you for watching. 😃
those were some amazing images
Thank you so much Todd.
Wow - I love owls so much. You got fantastic recordings! I‘m amazed. Here, in Germany, where I live, they are so rare and I never saw one in nature. But I‘m looking forward to see someone in the future! 🦉 Keep up the good work. I can learn from you so much! 👍🏻💪🏻
thank you so much Max. You have a life of exploring ahead of you and I am certain there are many owl days in your future. 🙂
I will say, Josh, that Great Grey Owls really are one of my favourite birds to photograph and, as you say, the opportunity doesn’t come around that often so we constantly need to be respectful of their space. Hopefully, it will again because last summer, one of the areas I’ve gone to photograph these wonderful creatures was significantly burned from wildfires. Still unclear whether the habitat will support life for them. Expect to find out in a couple of months. Some great images and footage here. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it Marcus. thank you,
Hey Josh, wow over 10K so awesome! Funny... my hard drives ask me the same thing. Why so many pictures of the same bird? Always look forward to your videos. We don't have GGO's locally but they are on my list! Have a great weekend! Greg
Yeah, I've learned to do a lot more deleting. Thanks as always Greg.
Amazing Owl photos. Congrats on passing the 10k subscriber mark, Josh.
Thanks so much Victor.
Love this one Josh, Your narrative is spot on, I need to go find some owls.
Go for it!
I photograph in the Gulf Islands National Seashore system, try to stay on trails and keep my distance from the wildlife which is mostly birds. Thought I had missed the fledging of great horned owl chicks when I had been away for a few weeks. However, walking down a trail near their nest I looked over and it appeared momma owl had lined her two chicks up on a limb, with her in the background, just for me to photograph. I spent about three minutes taking their pictures and left. When I returned a half-hour later they were gone and I never saw them again. I don't know if they took pity on me and decided to give me a photo op or if gentle persistence paid off but it produced one of my favorite photos and wildlife photography experiences. Hopefully they feel the same way about me.
Such a wonderful experience.
Another great video with some incredible still images to go along with exceptional video. Looks like the 500PF is working out well. I really like mine.
thank you, loving the lens.
