    • The Brits sent many boatloads of convicts to the American colonies for over 100 years until they got their sorry butts kicked in the revolutionary war (which by the way, we would have lost had it not been for the French navy and mosquito borne malaria decimating the Brits and saving our sorry butts), so after they surrendered they were in a pickle. Only then (1788) did they begin sending convicts to Australia

  • The question is, does the revenue from tourism actually reach the public directly? Investing that amount of money into the public services that protect them and allow them hierarchical and superior conveniences is coming from funding that helps the public directly - initiatives that fund homeless prevention programs and social services that help the working and middle class. Does tourism revenue make it back to those social services or does it go mainly to infrastructure? Usually, the latter. Just because they increase total revenue doesn't mean those funds are being dispersed fairly. My sneaking suspicion is that the public IS paying for them and not seeing that money back directly.

    @ncorp2668@ncorp26686 жыл бұрын
    • N Corp a lot of the money is in tourism people come to see them, stop in hotels use the taxis,trains, restaurants,buy souvenirsthat goes to you ordinary people. then theres the money they get from opening their properties to the public the crown gets that but has to pay tax on in

  • Yeah whatever you view, you can't argue with the monarchy on financial grounds. The crown has an old deal with the state where the state pays the queen's expenses, and her estate pays all of it's profits into the treasury. There has never been a year where she cost more than she brought in--and that's not even counting the tourism factor.

    @RMAGGR@RMAGGR6 жыл бұрын
    • Well.....How did the family acquire those lands i wonder, lol....

      @jacquesvermeulen6285@jacquesvermeulen62856 жыл бұрын
    • Well, despite the common belief about the monarchy, most personal land owned by the royal family was either bought or inherited (especially since King George I). Royal land within England itself hasn't been forcibly taken since William the Conqueror (just under 1000 years ago) unless it was disinherited from another noble.

      @jacquesvermeulen6285@jacquesvermeulen62856 жыл бұрын
    • Um, I thought we were talking about royal land. The diamonds have nothing to do with that, as they came from private companies, foreign kings and separately governed colonies. You do know that just because the UK owns the land doesn't make it royal land?

      @sadaasdafa8635@sadaasdafa86356 жыл бұрын
    • Except that there's not a single bit of evidence to show the monarchy brings in tourism money, even Visit Britain couldn't find any. Also once you account for the tax that is lost from the duchies the monarchy is a net lose to the UK

      @cmecoo3109@cmecoo31096 жыл бұрын
  • This was so poorly executed he didn’t press at all. Tourists would still come to Britain even if there wasn’t for the royals. Look at France. There hasn’t been any monarchy in forever and tourists still come to Versailles.

    @sv-bd5em@sv-bd5em6 жыл бұрын
    • sv 93 Versailles gets *better* tourism precisely *because* there is no royalty, as it means that people can walk around inside the palace , which imo sounds more fun than standing outside in the rain looking through the windows.

I wouldn't go to a palace in Britain cuz "here they voted out the monarchy in 2020". I'm against the monarchy on principle but I have a hard time arguing with the tourism part, plus some old people reeeeeally like it and I don't feel like it taking it away from them.

    • I don't give a rats ass about their tourism contributions, because from an economic rights perspective, they represent the idea that one family is more unconditionally valuable and thus worthy of wealth than anyone else. That undermines everything about a healthy civil and democratic society. They are just tired spectre of feudalism that needs purging.
