Collin recently drove this car from Michigan to Florida and back again and has also started to do some fun modifications. What is it like to own a $1000 Lexus? Depends on the condition. They are definitely worth it, if the condition is right. I have an MINT (and when I say MINT, I mean MINT, no exaggeration) condition Black 2000 LS 400. It has a tad over 200K miles on it now. And it has every single option the car came with including AIR SUSPENSION (which is exceptionally rare). I bought it from the original owner back in 2004 with 27K miles, and have babied it ever since. About 3 or 4 years back, I had a guy that actually stopped me while I was headed into a Staples in the SF bay area, and make me an offer of 6K right then and there! I said, no the car was not for sale. He then said he was willing to go higher. 7K? 8K? I told him, sorry, the car was really not for sale at ANY price. It's going to my grave with me!!

I've had mine for 20 yrs. And it's still my daily driver. Perhaps the best car ever made by the human species. Vastly superior to any German junk. Bought mine at the suggestion of a M-B certified master tech who had worked on one (timing belt, etc.) for a friend of his and had a chance to look at it carefully in his shop.
I bought a 95 LS 400 for $700 in 2019 with 196,000 miles. This is a South Florida car with absolutely no rust. Owner bought the car for his wife, and she passed away shortly before I purchased. It was a one owner vehicle in good condition, with front bumper damage. I've since replaced bumper and repainted the car a single color Ebony Teal Pearl, instead of the two tone dark gray metallic bottom. She has 210,000 miles now with new starter, brakes, fuel pump, struts (front and rear), tune-up, tires and aftermarket 18 gold and chrome lip Motegi wheels. Valve cover gaskets, water pump and timing belt kit was done @173,000 miles. I also have only used 93 octane fuel with advice of former owner who purchased it new, and Mobil 1 oil. It's gonna be handed down to one of my grand boys in a few years. Truly an amazing car which can be enjoyed by multiple generations. I can't think of any other car I've owned that runs and looks as good as this one. Nothing rattles, everything still works and it has the Nakamichi Sound system that sounds really nice.
The 98-2000 is LS400 is the best car ever made. I got 98 LS400 236k on the clock and still going strong. My advise for you is to put mobile one high mileage full synthetic oil with denso oil filter to keep the engine in excellent shape.

I've had a '98 for 20 yrs and don't use Mobil 1. I do use Toyota filters. Do basic maintenance myself and stay away from dealers.
Mine has 306,000 miles and runs like new. Belt and pump done every 100k. Still my daily driver
Such a timeless design. It still looks better than most cars on the road (and probably rides better too). Every time when I see one I can't help but to keep staring at it. The only other car that comes close in terms of build quality and refinement is the Lexus LS430, which is arguably the best car in the world.
I bought 1 of 10 first LS 400 back in 1990. $65k. The first ones came with options thats not even found in modern day cars like heated seats, mirrors, air suspension nakamichi 7 speaker 3 amp system, TRD tuned motor with sprinlkers. Did 160 in PA and felt like gliding on air when ECT switch is on.

I've owned 44 cars over the years and there is NO marque or model that can run, mile after mile, with the early LS400s. Luxury is no breakdowns, ever, and a comfortable but road holding ride on even the worst surfaces. The quiet, functional styling keeps it looking timeless, in comparison to later Lexus designs which tend to shout, "Hey, Look at me!" Cheese grater grilles do not impress me, as a trained professional industrial designer, now retired. Unlike this series Lexus, which probably has the most devoted fanbase, late model German luxury cars typically have about 10% of the buyers sell their cars within 1st year. The maintenance costs are the primary complaint. My 1997 LS has 181,000 miles on it and it has never broken-down on the road. I change the Mobil 1 at 5,000 miles and use the very best filters. Only one timing belt replacement (100,000 normal interval), one starter and three sets of radial tires. Oh, yes. I just replaced the battery with a 72-month one. My records show four other batteries, but I live in a mild climate with average year-round temperature of 70 deg. F. There are no cracks in the leather, perhaps because I don't park in the sun a lot and the application of Woolite and distilled water. I anoint the seats, wheel and other leather surfaces once a year. I spray on and let soak in this treatment that professional car restorers use. Other leather preservatives tend to remove the outer colored finish. There is no rust on the original paint, but clear coat is oxidized after 24 years. The engine is as silent at idle as any car I've owned, new or used. In fact, I can hear the engines of late model high-end makes next to me, when sitting in traffic but not my motor.

I bought a GS300 2001 about a year ago. Has 192k now and i love the car. Had a bit of maintenance to do on it but it runs smooth, quiet, and strong. I think I'll get 350k miles out of this car.

"The 4 speeds are not very good transmissions." A34x transmissions are some of the best transmissions out there used in Toyotas from the late 80s up until 20teenish. Literally almost every toyota automatic truck in the 90s and early 2000s and the Tacoma in 2015 uses these. As an owner of Toyotas 5AT in my GS400 and FJ Cruiser, they've been so so in comparison to my 4AT in my LS400, 400,000 mile 4Runner and both my Cressidas.
I went ahead and bought the shop manual used for my LS400 and says the transmission is rated for up to 800 horsepower
Yeah, I was under the impression that the 4 speed is actually the superior transmission in terms of reliability compared to the 5 speed. But then I guess in the grand scheme of things, both are super reliable.
It seems to ride so smooth and despite all that mileage still is very quiet, hardly any wind noise (contrast that with the sorry excuses of cars we get from German brands). Amazing!

I have a 93 LS400. Biggest maintenance costs is you need to expect the trans to slip at some point, and replace or rebuild it (Not terribly expensive but bound to happen), and they rubber timing belt every 100k miles just replace it.
I Still Drive My 1999 Lexus LS400 As My Daily Driver! I've Kept Up The Maintenance (Which Hasn't Cost Much Over The Past 22 Year's). The Interior And Paint Still Looks Great And The Car Runs As Smooth As Butter! I Get 29.3 Miles Per Gallon On The Highway. It's Good To Hear That You're Getting The Same. All I Have To Say Is That Lexus Built A Great Car And I'm Definitely Going To Keep Mine As A Classic Vehicle For Life. I Get Compliments On How Great It Looks And Ride's. I'm A Lexus Fan For Life! ✌️

Best 24year old Roadtrip vehicle ever. I bought one 4,000 miles away, in Phoenix. Got one way air fare for my family and I. Then, drove it up the coast of California and back to Indiana w 4 day stay in Colorado. 24 year old vehicle that will go coast to coast. Revolutionary vehicle. I feel honored to own one that was so well takin care of & highway gas mileage is unbelievable. 24-27mpg at 80-90mph. And will get up to 124 amazingly quick and smooth w the VVT V8. LOVE my 400 & the memories.
I also have a 1998 Lexus es300 with 262xxx miles on it. Slammed to the ground with some 2 piece wheels . Running beautifully. In great shape
I own a 2003 Gs430 with now at 300,000 miles on it and still runs great the 3uz vv-ti engine is *chefs kiss* possibly the best engine just only thing you must keep up with the maintenance and it'll run up to 1 mil miles which is my goal.

Believe it not, I just purchased a 1999 lexus ls400 myself. The only issue is the alternator has to be replaced. Yet I've driven it 22 miles. Can't wait to start making it mine. Photos coming soon.

My son paid $2,000 for a beat up one 1995 LS400 in Arizona. 235K miles. no rust but needed rack and pinion.. I fixed Bad plug wires. I'm going to clean the oxygen sensors to get rid of the check engine light but actually it passed emissions. Engine runs like a Swiss watch I wrestled the car away from him now I'm just going to keep it for myself he bought. Now has no power steering leak and has no oil leak. Burns about a quart of oil between oil changes. something else. Nothing comes close to the comfort of driving this beat up Lexus the perfect Road trip Car. No CVT Transmission to break. This is the car I let my teens Drive so that they don't drive my Camry

To the owner, if you want aux/Bluetooth support on your nakamichi, its actually incredibly simple to piggy back onto the cd player outputs to achieve this. I'm not electronically savvy and I accomplished the whole mod in about 45 minutes. Being that you're a BMW guy, you probably have enough electronic experience out of necessity that you could do this quick too.
I remember sitting in a new LS400 in the mid 90's in the showroom when my dad bought his ES300, it was a dreamcar, out of our price range at the time.

Its a great car I own it for 7 years .its awsome . If you still have a issue with fuel consumption. Change the fuel filter. It will change alot better gas mileage you will get.

Yeh, and LS500 also has that much quality over the competition. It's V35A-FTS is already have proven reliable, despite it's modern and complex design. They tuned it down so much that it can make 600 with a simple ECU tune.

i have a 98 ucf20 ith 218k, and other than some minor electrical issues, it took an impact into a tree at 50mph and drove off like nothing happened. Engine burns oil (like a Toyota) but is an absolute tank that I trust more than my family lol

I own a '96 and I honestly believe that the LS400 is one of the greatest secrets ever.. Eddie says his most favorite part of owning this car is the reliability. I agree. But think about it. It's 25 years old and has 200K miles. Yes, reliability.
You need to get the 5 Speed version one. Other than that any RWD based Lexus GS/LS/SC/IS is pure goat. Another great option is 98-05 GS300/400/430.

I have a Forest green 98 Lexus LS400. It has just a little over 220k miles on it and it's running real good for the time being. I'm glad that it was originally my mom's car and she gave it to me to drive. It is a real smooth vehicle and I like it a lot except for the gross forest green color and I want to change it to either white or black. But other than that it's nice! Thanks guys! :-)

@@traxonn That was a special interior order, I think. You have a great one. Enjoy! Best advice is don't do anything to try to improve it in any way. Change the oil and filter at least every 5K regardless of the kind of oil used.

My friends family had a 1994 ls400 from new till its final wreck at like near 400kmiles basic maintenance it went from his parents to one brother then the sister I think then he got it and we drove around in that thing all damn day n night lol . that car was super comfortable tons of blunts smoked in it lol and I don't remember any rust on it he lived in NJ/NY area

@@rustybricks1924 theyre excellent cars, unfortunately mine got totaled back in may last year by a distracted driver. it got to 280,000 with only minor issues and i suspect it would have easily gone much longer. the main thing is to check that the timing belt was done and to take care of any power steering leaks. they commonly leak from the pump and if you dont fix it in time, power steering fluid will seep into your alternator and ruin it.
My 98 has over 300,000 and we chuggin strong no problems

Have you tried removing the cd changer from the glove box and replaced with a Bluetooth module? Is that even possible? Would have to remove stereo, maybe just tap into it via rca?

Have you had to replace the engine or transmission or just regular maintenance? Also when you drove from Michigan to Florida did it leave you stranded at all? Also what did you get checked for the road trip?
Tell the owner to check out Grom Audio. They retrofit Bluetooth into old stereos like the one he has. They even retrofit Apple CarPlay on old Nav systems.

This is a fantastic and reliable car... and at an awesome price. I bought a 2002 LS430 with 99K miles on it for $11K...(check out my shorts)... so I paid a bit more than EddieX, but I know these cars will last a long time and it's better priced and will probably outlive new cars today where the average cost is about $60K today.

You have to go inside the engine manifold to change the starter. Make sure it’s been replaced before u buy it lol
If you do it yourself, count on more than 10 hours labor. But it's worth it, compared to driving mediocrity every day with anything else in this price range.

I own one of these and even down under they are legendary for reliability. I've owned a '92, and my '98 is better. I wholly agree they were possibly the best engineered car from lexus. Mine only has 80k of your miles on it, and its faultless... Likewise want to keep driving hahah Great video.

I've been to Michigan, the roads there are not pretty. Potholes everywhere, uneven roads, rough parts and most of it is highway.

Bought at 221k and drove from SoCal to Bay Area on the same day and then Bay Area to North Carolina and NC to Texas and so. All after 221k and now it is sitting at 246k. The engine is pretty bulletproof as long as you upkeep with regular oil changes. I drove straight from San Jose to Ashville North Carolina like 650 miles a day and five straight days. There are not that many cars out there, that can do this. I must say that the cabin is pretty silent even at 70 mph all day.

Ifiskgoeofoei oficjwor got a 2001 Lexus LS430 with 217,000 miles. They are amazing vehicles. Just have to take care of them and they last. They are hard to get cheap. Kinda rare to find them for sale.

Damn a 1998 ls400 at that. Only ls400’s I see in my area for $1000 are from 1990-1992, I’d rather get a 97-2000 model but idk maybe I should just get an older one
Great cars, but of course like anything, only meant to last so long. Going to look at doing a lot of repairs to random things, and I only would recommend original parts when possible. Things can get pretty pricey. I've had to fix quite a bit of leaks on mine, and numerous other repairs including suspension components, just under 200k miles.
How is the interior that nice for that price?!

I've owned many, many cars in my lifetime: 1. AMC Spirit 2. Porsche 924 3. Cadillac El dorado (x3) 4. Lexus LS430 (current car) 5. BMW E39 6. Ford Taurus 7. Honda Civic 8. Honda CVCC 9. Honda Accord 10. Ford Pinto ("Pinto Man!") 11. Buick LeSabre 12. Mercedes SL500 13. Another caddy I don't recall model 14. Drove in, but never owned, Lexus LS400 And let me just add that to those who think the Lexus LS is a quiet car, the only reason why you think it's quiet is because all the cars you've owned before were noisy buckets, and almost universally Japanese or German. Had you owned, for example, a Buick Regal, your opinion of Lexus NVH suppression would be middling, at best. I currently own an LS 430. I've driven the LS400. Are these cars quiet? Sure! Are they smooth? Sure! Do they suppress NVH well? Sure! But I'm here to tell you that the quietest car I've ever been in was this one Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham - yellowish leather, miles of polished fake wood, chrome detailing - this card made quite a statement, because of it's extroverted, jazzy interior and hushed, library interior. I mean, this car just glided over the asphalt in complete silence, and at speed a faint hush of wind. In this sense, Toyota copied the domestic luxury cars well, but the road harshness is still present on the LS that was removed from the Cadillac. Your Lexus is still noisy by contrast. (Similar with my El Dorado - these cars easily matched my Lexus in terms of NVH suppression). If you've ever driven in a Buick Electra, regal, Park Avenue (all these names come forth in an endless procession; names of car models that can easily match the LS in terms of comfort, quietness of ride, and NVH suppression, yet they all are forgotten! No one remembers them), of you've ever driven them, then you know that the LS is an overrated car where quietness is concerned. Sure, it's much more quiet than the Germans, and more quiet than most American cars. But, the bucks and Cadillacs of years past? The Lexus LS series of cars are purely "meh..." A note about build quality and reliability, although my caddies have held up well, the Lexus is obviously the quality car here - it's peerless in terms of reliability. Better than the American cars, and far, far better than the German cars where reliability is concerned. It must be made clear that I don't care what anybody says, American luxury cars are far more reliable than German luxury cars. Take it from someone who has owned plenty of both over the years. The automotive press just doesn't hammer the Germans as hard as they should where reliability is concerned. Not even close.

CharroTradicion yes! They had a lot of problems. The only thing that will take this car to the junk yard is rust being from a Michigan. The engine will still be going but the body will be completely rusted.

I just got out of a Mercedes 550 MC late model belonging to a lady friend of mine and it was very harshly-sprung and much more cramped in the interior. I tried to reset the clock for her and leafed through the 700-page owner's manual, trying to find how to move the dashboard clock ahead one hour. The directions said, "Go to 'Vehicle', etc.,etc." on the screen recessed into the center of the dashboard. I couldn't read the screen, because of the tiny lettering and the bright background light from the sun flooding the cockpit. As a retired industrial designer, I'd give only one star for this totally inadequate, unergonomic design. Can you tell I'm not a fan of touchscreens and needlessly complex Mercedes dash?

BTW the Lexus ls430 is a fking fantastic car! Ultra lux pack is cool but don't focus on the stupid package, focus on more important things like what the tranny fluid looks like and maintenance history. However like the ls400, you almost can't go wrong.
