【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

It's my first time seeing Komugi act somewhat aggressively, having a girlfriend awakened something in him. He's usually so submissive. It's the females who I've noticed to be more territorial/protective of their partners but Odashi doesn't seemed threatened by Hana.

@@ensnipe2000 It's the nature of small-clawed otters. They are a matriarchal species. Odashi and Otsuyu had their own sister fight after Otsuyu had babies. Their relationships are very complex.

@@avoboy662 No, Hana and Odashi are female river otters. They are animals and are a bit territorial. Be careful of ascribing human traits to them. Hana is shy around other otters and hasn't spent much time around others besides Kotaro. It's a learning curve for her, like everything else she's mastered.
Kotaro was very curious about Odashi. He is so cute running to and away from her. Hana is the otter boss and she knows it! Acceptance of new otters in their secure, happy home just takes time and patience. It’s difficult when everyone lives far away from each other. Lots of otter personalities today. Fun! 💛🦦🦦💛💛
Hana is actually very timid. Her aggression displays are usually fear responses. Usually. Sometimes she's a mood. During Hana's 2nd on-camera meeting with Ui as they cursed each other out, Ui got very close to Hana twice and both times Hana backed off, not wanting a fight. Chonk Princess talks a big game but doesn't back it up except with the guys (Komugi, Kotaro, Aty). Odashi clearly wanted to be friends with Hana but Hana wasn't having it.
I kinda knew that was why. I only wanted her to be the princess boss. She is my backpack princess and I adore the little fluffy! It’s good Ui and Hana accept each other. I hope one day Hana will accept Odashi too! Or even the funny year olds💛🦦💛

I also liked when she was scratching on the glass door and Kotsume father inside was making a nice game out of it with his fingers... I think that was really nice of him. It did seem to let her know all was going to be okay.

It'll probably end up with just Aty and Kotaru swimming together, Hana close by, Komugi and Odashi not too far off, and Ui either in a cage or meters away from everyone else screaming her head off. After this video, I'm more interested to see how Komugi reacts to Aty now that he has Odashi. Aty was completely smitten by her the last time they met.

He really did. At times I felt sorry that Kotaro was in the midst of drama. He doesn't really like it. I wonder how much time Hana spent with her twin Komugi before her relocation to the Kotsumet household.

First time we've seen Komugi act like that. It must be harder to do these otter crossovers. At first, Hana and Kotaro were the main couple. Now, Aty and Ui and Komugi and Odashi being couples makes the meetings complicated.

Not really. You can see that Hana is very uncertain abd staying near her dad. She was also backing up at her meeting with Ui, despite her remembering that Ui hit Kotaro. Hana is territorial but not spoiling for a fight. She's not used to being around other otters much or having them in her space.
The amount of patience, gentleness, and confidence you displayed throughout this time is truly remarkable

Might be a better idea for the otters to get together somewhere neutral so they don't feel the need to be protective of their home territory. Maybe a park or river visit.

I think if it was just Aty, Komugi and Kotaro, they will be bros for life, but when there are girls around, fighting begins)) Also it’s interesting to see Komugi protecting his beloved Odashi)) haven’t seen Kotaro or Aty doing this thing)) Hope to see one day the whole collaboration of six otters (three couples))
My guess (and I could be completely wrong) is that Kotaro thinks of Hana as a younger sibling. As you see, Komugi is almost always friendly yet today he didnt want Kotaro near Odashi. That goes to say that no matter how sweet the male otter is, he'll make sure others know he has his claim on the female. Kotaro didn't seem bothered when Aty or Komugi was trying to get close to Hana. If anything he just checked in on her after her fight to make sure she was okay and enjoying herself (like a brother would).
@@maevekendrick2715 maybe you are right, but also in Aty case he as well doesn’t fight for Ui, it’s actually the other way around. I think that female otters are still more protective for their territory or mates than males one)) because Odashi also did try to fight with Ui, while Komugi didn’t mind having Aty around, though he was with Odashi at that time as well

@@Maruska1306 Loutre mom mentioned in a previous video that Odashi gets along well with other otters (both male and female) but if someone threatens her first, she doesn't back away from the fight. Ui threatened Odashi immediately after meeting her. So when they had a one-on-one meet, Odashi stood up for herself. Even in this video, Odashi seems almost indifferent, it's Hana who gets territorial (she even snapped at Komugi).

That's a little sad, but on the other hand predictible in some way: The 'homies' feel, that it is an unexpected and unpleasant invasion of their territory. And the "guest-couple" likes to explore everything - but is primarily focussed on each other and a little "threatened-exited" by the resident otters. Conclusion: No, they CLEARLY do NOT ENJOY such "surprises"... 😬🤷♀️😏 Might be, they COULD build a pack, if they really would live together - BUT... let's not forget the fight and separation of Odashi and her sister. 😕🤔 It seems, that it's just a romantic idea of humans, that these incredible cute, intelligent and social little mammals could 'like' visiting each other... It is obviously not the reality. 😞 It's a pity for all otter lovers, I really, really find it sad - but it seems, that we have to accept that as a fact. 🤷♀️ Only exception seem to be potential mates. And males CAN get along and play with each other... It appears that socialising out in nature may be easier as they don't feel like they are being invaded in their homes. Aty, Kotaro, Hana and Komugi sans Ui swam together in the river just fine and they even explored the waterfalls with Ui when she calmed down.
