Next Gen Subaru WRX STI is officially DEAD

A discussion on Subaru's decision to discontinue the STI. Subaru announced they will NOT release an STI based on the current generation WRX platform. Their plan is to pursue an electric version of the STI in the future. I am skeptical and very sad.

  • Man what a sad day today with the news that there will not be a 2022+ STI, even sadder that more than likely the next one will be electric, if there even is a next one.

I'm already getting my maintenance contingency plan by established. I didn't change my clutch on my 2017 WRX @,50K or 60K. That was my fault. As much driving as I do here in Southern CA.

  • I literally bought the last 2021 on any dealer lot in my state last October in Ann Arbor. Sitting in the garage with just over 600 miles on it which is from the drive home from the dealership a couple trips to the shop for cobbs titian exhaust, coil overs and other suspension upgrades and to the tire shop to have te37 put on and aligned before putting it up for winter.

  • It's clear that STI motorsports does not deem an fa24 motor as acceptable in the world of motorsports and racing, if they did, then they would have made a new FA24 sti platform. The fa motor was designed to be compliant with emissions/regulations as a daily driver economy vehicle, not meant for the motorsports and rally heritage that STI stands for. Just look at the last 7 years- STI motorsports division still decides to use EJ for all of its racing, not even glancing at the fa motor. For STI to be competitive in the world of racing, they know they must develop an electrified platform. I believe Subaru is making the right choice to keep STI as a competitive car for racing and motorsports heritage, and congratulate them for not putting in a shitty fa motor

  • Why are you all talking about this engine? The great loss is not about having low outcome engine with wrx but about dead sti gearbox. Wrx sti has a legendary gear box, that can hold up to 1400hp stock, and not it's gone..

    @SaW216216@SaW2162162 жыл бұрын
    • The locking center planetary diff, the helical front diff and the Torsen rear diff make SO MUCH DIFFERENCE on the STi. The WRX is basically all open but the middle kind of locks up in a viscous sort of way. So, the feeling when "getting it" is much different between the two. Other than feel, you rightly hit the ruggedness aspect. The WRX 6 (modified 5) isn't weak, but it's not the STi's nearly indestructible setup. Shift feel is also different, the STi is very direct and rugged. I have a good knowledge of the topic. My wife drives a 2019 WRX and I drive a 2018 STi. We also have a Fiesta ST. It shits so easy and takes zero skill to drive smooth. The Subaru's make you pay some attention to drive smoothly. IT'S DEVASTATING that Ford killed the ST's (in car form) and now Subaru has killed the STi and likely soonish the WRX. WRX and STi sales, along with BRZ are a very small percent of cars sold by Subaru.

      @ToxicityAssured@ToxicityAssured2 жыл бұрын
    • @@ToxicityAssured Thanks for this comprehensive reply! For sure, I didn't mention all the differences in transmission. You are totally right. Don't get me wrong, I understand that wrx/sti/brz have low precent of sale, but check other companies, they have as well some car lines that have low sale perspective but keep them in charge. The brz gets even worse statistic but it has been updated and released. But the Icon of subaru industry was ditched away. You physically can not keep the rally heritage in the car by depriving manual gear box and roaring engine and shifting everything to electricity . It's a hypocrisy when they said that we would keep the essence of rally heritage in further model.

  • Nah, it is most likely supply chain issue. Ukraine produces ~65% of neon. Neon is used to make lasers for chips. Russian also produces ~ 10% of the raw materials used for chips. Russia is selling them to China, who then in turns sell them to manufactures at a jacked up price. Subaru is a small company and was one of the worst hit b the chip shortage. They see the writing on the wall and are putting all there resources into SUV and EV with Toyota/Yamaha.. This war in Ukraine just accelerated/changed everything for Subaru.

  • It's hilarious that they refer to this love as something the market is asking for. Nobody is asking for electric vehicles but the government appointed officials pushing regulations that will destroy everything we know about cars and the lifestyle people enjoy involving them. This is an inevitable move that all car makers will be required to make. Those of us with modifications will be targeted as well. Those of you who sold your oem parts when you made those upgrades will be paying premium to find new ones when the EPA starts handing out fines for altering the emissions. He is right though. These cars are going to become very valuable. But almost useless to the average person. Gas prices skyrocketing and being blamed on conflict is a smoke screen. Inflation worldwide was purposely created to destroy our economies. This doesn't affect rich people at all. Just you and me. They want us to not be able to own these cars all together and I forsee electric vehicle rentals for us since we won't be able to afford to own one for ourselves. It isn't just buying the car. You have to convert your own electrical system at home to be able to properly charge them. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but here in the states our infrastructure is ass. We can't run ac in the summer without popping transformers. Imagine every house trying to charge their cars too?

    • Glad you're aware of this. I try to talk to people with this and they think this is some conspiracy or something. Makes me sad 😔

    • @@markayala it is a conspiracy though, isn't it? Being called a conspiracy theorist is the problem from those people. It's used in a derogatory way. As if our governments are infallible to being corrupt. I was in the military and deployed in 06 to Iraq and again in 10 to Afghanistan. I've seen what our government is willing to do and spend to get as rich as possible and I walked away with a deeper understanding of the lives that were destroyed for oil and natural resources. We called them terrorist for protecting their own neighborhoods from a super power stealing everything they had. We've done it to every 3rd world country in one way or the other. That includes the rest of the super power countries as well. With everyone aligned for green energy it isn't even a hidden agenda. It's out in the open, they literally gave us the time line and vehicle manufacturers are following that time line. We were told we would own nothing and be happy. Investment firms like Black Rock are hyper inflating housing markets by buying up all the single family homes and turning them into rental properties. Middle class people can't afford a house that used to be 250k and is now double the price. My house is worth 550 right now but if I sell I'll be paying that or higher for something comparable and I also have to worry about investment firms with unlimited money out bidding me. It makes no sense to sell right now other that to trick those who think they are getting away with selling high. Used car prices are through the roof. Sti's used are selling for more than they were worth new. Groceries, gas, heat, electric, the inflation on everything is breaking records everyday. In the US our government is exceeding the level of common sense policies you would think they would put in place to stop any of this and yet they don't. But we are too worried about what is happening in Ukraine right now to focus. A country the US propped up and armed to fight the Russians. You can be against Russian policy and also not root for a country with a literal nazi battalion (azov battalion) that have been killing Ukrainian separatist (who live in Ukraine) for the last 8 years. We funded that, because we want their oil and gas. The puppet government there is still asking for more of our tax dollars everyday and everyday we send more money and weapons. It is a conspiracy being enacted by the world leaders as we speak. At the end of the day, what can we do? Go for the ride. Adapt to the new way of living.

  • Internal combustion engines are very efficient. See what a new battery costs you and see how long it takes to charge your electric vehicles. Oh yeah btw, electric vehicles are actually worse for the environment. All that lithium needs to be mined and all the dead batteries need to go somewhere. Wake up people you're being duped and lead off a cliff!

  • I’m a huge fan of Subaru and the STI but idk why everybody is crying, people didn’t even like the next generation WRX 🤡 plus everybody knew this was going to come. If anything people should be happy the STI badge doesn’t get put on this “ugly “, “disappointing” and etc. shell of a WRX that they said it is 🥱

    • I mean I see your point, but I would rather have the car than not at all. Cosmetic stuff can always be rectified with aftermarket mods.
