Next Gen Subaru WRX STI is officially DEAD
A discussion on Subaru's decision to discontinue the STI. Subaru announced they will NOT release an STI based on the current generation WRX platform. Their plan is to pursue an electric version of the STI in the future. I am skeptical and very sad.

Man what a sad day today with the news that there will not be a 2022+ STI, even sadder that more than likely the next one will be electric, if there even is a next one.
Man, if there is one, that rumble sound will be coming from the speakers of the car.
Dumb comment. You literally have no knowledge of car builds between car trims. Engine internals, turbo, suspension, and brakes are all different.
@weebs just creep me out man I’m going to disagree with you. They’re not the same. You can do the research on why. If you don’t want to, that’s fine, you can go ahead and keep slapping labels on things that are not.
I work for Subaru as well as a Subaru ambassador, and just an fyi they are not repeat not making the Sti! I’m not giving any secrets out but as far as I KNOW, nothing is in the works for this futuristic wrx hinda.
We know now that Subaru is going to announce something electric this year (not the solterra, something else). Strong belief that it's going to be the next STI or Forester.
Unexpected but expected. Saw the news and was like, “Well my car’s value just went up.” Bought a 2020 WRX STI in late 2019 with the hunch that this would happen. Love the car, no reason to sell.
Very true, but some of us were in denial 😆
i totally did the same and got a 20 sti about a year ago. so glad i did!
Likewise....21 sti here
I bough first Subaru in my life 2018 Sti in mint condition and low miles with warranty- I’m keeping this car for good
I bought my STi when Covid hit and the Market was down paid 30k with 2k miles feel thankful.
Nice
Me too!
At least Mitsubishi had the respect of giving customers a finial edition. Subaru basically spat in our faces with this bull.
Yeah, not a fan of how they went about it.
Hello 👋 I follow your Chanel for a while and always greatly appreciate how well you prepare material for us with simple language… description of your mods and explanation is superb💯 I wish you sincerely good health my friend and please don’t change your style ! It’s an absolute pleasure to listen your new vlogs and follow your daily life with your STi Also here 2018’ STi Sport Tech Best wishes from Toronto🇨🇦 Cheers. Mike
Well said!! I can’t believe they canceled the STI, I have wanted one for a long time and now it seems like I will never be able to get one.
Well I'm part of the EJ 25 club now. I purchased a 2020 STI the end of January from CarMax with only 9,421K . I can't believe Subaru did this. Stay safe brother and I will always support your channel and our community.
Thanks for dropping by my friend. Good to hear from you.
So are we in a sweet spot having the 2020 STI? I'm not going to ever sell mine. I drive 100miles a day to work. I just got the car literally last month. I'm already getting my maintenance contingency plan by established. I didn't change my clutch on my 2017 WRX @,50K or 60K. That was my fault. As much driving as I do here in Southern CA.
I literally bought the last 2021 on any dealer lot in my state last October in Ann Arbor. Sitting in the garage with just over 600 miles on it which is from the drive home from the dealership a couple trips to the shop for cobbs titian exhaust, coil overs and other suspension upgrades and to the tire shop to have te37 put on and aligned before putting it up for winter.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Some good points for sure.
Thanks for watching!
I love your videos. And looks like our cars just entered the phase of becoming collector's items...
Thanks for watching!
as a 2004 wrx owner, my car hasnt depreciated much at all in the last decade. now it may GAIN value.... but at what cost
I saw that video in 2019 and that video and your reasoning is what helped convince me to get an STI in 2020 rather than to wait it out for the next generation. Thank you for that video.
Yup! I'm so glad I decided not to wait, who knows how long and what would be next...
@@akqjtn BTW is that a phone mount to right of the temperature controls? what brand is that?
Nice camera angle and presentation 🙌
Very nicely done report! So sad about the STI. Glad we have a 2018!
I just bought a 2016 sti and I'm in love with it.
You are so right man. There is nothing like that cold start and that subies Rumble.
I Would like to know if you have test driven ‘22 Wrx and your thoughts about seeing it in person. Has it grown on you or do you still dislike it’s styling.
Great job on your report!
Thank you!
Went to look at the Lexus IS F Sport today. It’s hard to buy that car as tempting as it is. My Sti is amazing. Only has 4133 miles.
I put an order through the day the new wrx got revealed. October 21 build and picked it up mid December. Great decision but the downside is i now feel somewhat guilty when I drive it. Currently on 1000kms
It's clear that STI motorsports does not deem an fa24 motor as acceptable in the world of motorsports and racing, if they did, then they would have made a new FA24 sti platform. The fa motor was designed to be compliant with emissions/regulations as a daily driver economy vehicle, not meant for the motorsports and rally heritage that STI stands for. Just look at the last 7 years- STI motorsports division still decides to use EJ for all of its racing, not even glancing at the fa motor. For STI to be competitive in the world of racing, they know they must develop an electrified platform. I believe Subaru is making the right choice to keep STI as a competitive car for racing and motorsports heritage, and congratulate them for not putting in a shitty fa motor
Definitely see your point. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for the next few years. Hopefully it works out!
The fa is indeed ass. Biggest regret of my life. Nothing good about it.
Great point
Yep agree, I reckon they would of been struggling to make that 400hp everyone was hearing about, reliably.
Dude you're right but what is it about the FA motor that makes it crap? Is it the direct injection stuff? I'm really curious
Still sad when I tried to get one last November, the dealers weren’t able to order any and or get them.
As an STI owner this is hard to see. I can understand why they are doing it but it is still hard to see. As you said dont get rid of my STI I have absolutely have no plans to. I have a wonderful 2014 and love driving it everyday and plan to keep it that way as long as fuel supply permints.
We just picked up a 2020 STI with 18k miles and absolutely love it. Looks like we will be keeping it for a while now.
Sad news for STI..But good news for future resale prices! Also let’s not forget the WRX as well. So if you have one or the other variables with final year production 2021 heritage design, I think you are going to be in luck, but time will tell!
Picked up my 2015 sti on Jan 1st 2016 and loved the car ever since, I was waiting for this new version...guess the pressure is gone. Keeping my 2015 forever hopefully lol.
hello, Can 2022 wrx 6MT be installed a head up display (through OBD socket) ?? thx.
Did you sell your CVT? If so, how come?
Happy I bought my 2020 STi last year. Now it’s looking even better
This is bullish for used wrx sti prices. They should hold their value even better now
I know, even trade in values. I can trade in my car and get more than what I paid for it new in 2019.
I completely agree with you on this. While I've never owned an STI or WRX, I used to drive a manual BMW Z4 3.0. It's a complete roadster and was a huge joy to drive. Always had a smile on my face and upset for eventually selling it. Full disclosure, I'm new to Subaru and just bought an Ascent. Definitely a family vehicle with all the welcomed creature comforts. I still would love to get a small sports car again.
I bought a series white special edition Sti 1 out of 250 in the usa and I will definitely hold on to that 😂
You got the car I wanted, just couldn't get my hands on one.
I have an 18 STi I was thinking of selling to get the new Z. Now I'm not so sure anymore
You made a great decision man.Everyone did know the new model was going to be a big disappointment. The VA chassis is the last in a line of classics. The Gc8 ,the blob eye, hawk eye,wrx wagon then the 15-21 shape.I have the VA wrx and im glad kept it.Subaru has been stale .They just put the nail in the coffin in terms of true performance cars from subaru. Will be going back to euro or the new nissan Z after this
Makes me wonder if the 2022 wrx will be the last one ?
Hearing the news makes me glad that I decided to end my lease on the 2020 wrx to get the 2021 sti in may. Now I know that my car's value is going to hold for a long time.
FTW!
They’re going to do something like ford did with the mustang and make some electric and slap an sti badge on it.
I guess time will tell. I also see it going away completely, as a stand-alone car that is.
Except the real Mustang is still in production.
Very sad times for being a car enthusiast who isn't stinkin' rich. NOW is the time to find a performance car before everything is expensive, boring and EV. I got an Elantra N on the way, planning to keep it for a long time.
Why are you all talking about this engine? The great loss is not about having low outcome engine with wrx but about dead sti gearbox. Wrx sti has a legendary gear box, that can hold up to 1400hp stock, and not it's gone..
The locking center planetary diff, the helical front diff and the Torsen rear diff make SO MUCH DIFFERENCE on the STi. The WRX is basically all open but the middle kind of locks up in a viscous sort of way. So, the feeling when "getting it" is much different between the two. Other than feel, you rightly hit the ruggedness aspect. The WRX 6 (modified 5) isn't weak, but it's not the STi's nearly indestructible setup. Shift feel is also different, the STi is very direct and rugged. I have a good knowledge of the topic. My wife drives a 2019 WRX and I drive a 2018 STi. We also have a Fiesta ST. It shits so easy and takes zero skill to drive smooth. The Subaru's make you pay some attention to drive smoothly. IT'S DEVASTATING that Ford killed the ST's (in car form) and now Subaru has killed the STi and likely soonish the WRX. WRX and STi sales, along with BRZ are a very small percent of cars sold by Subaru.
@@ToxicityAssured Thanks for this comprehensive reply! For sure, I didn't mention all the differences in transmission. You are totally right. Don't get me wrong, I understand that wrx/sti/brz have low precent of sale, but check other companies, they have as well some car lines that have low sale perspective but keep them in charge. The brz gets even worse statistic but it has been updated and released. But the Icon of subaru industry was ditched away. You physically can not keep the rally heritage in the car by depriving manual gear box and roaring engine and shifting everything to electricity . It's a hypocrisy when they said that we would keep the essence of rally heritage in further model.
Nah, it is most likely supply chain issue. Ukraine produces ~65% of neon. Neon is used to make lasers for chips. Russian also produces ~ 10% of the raw materials used for chips. Russia is selling them to China, who then in turns sell them to manufactures at a jacked up price. Subaru is a small company and was one of the worst hit b the chip shortage. They see the writing on the wall and are putting all there resources into SUV and EV with Toyota/Yamaha.. This war in Ukraine just accelerated/changed everything for Subaru.
Subaru didn't want to change the EJ257, so they stopped making the STI.
They definitely squeezed everything they could out of it.
I’m surprised at people’s rxn. It seems Subaru is considering a hybrid, not just an ev option, for the next STI. It might be like the Corvette going mid-engine, it turned out better. BTW I have a 2021 STI. Things change.
It's about time they updated the sti!
I have a 13 WRX hatch and my problem is still no hatch.
😂
Electric STi could be ok, but I guess will have to look at what they figure out. Will miss the shifting, but it looks like they don't care about "drivers" anymore.
I don’t care that they stop producing them, Subaru you better hear me, don’t even think about stopping producing parts for all our Subaru WRX and STi
STi Values now to skyrocket 😎
Damn man
I fucked up, got rid of my 2019 STI. In January 🥺😞😪😟.
Yeah sadly 😥😞
Dont have an Sti but im glad i bought my 21 wrx
I don’t mind electric, just give me the option to row my own ⚙️’s
the only thing truly wrong with all STI's right now is how much it costs to run them because of gas prices.
People felt the same way about the Mach E
I did the same gamble when I purchased my 2020 WR Blue STI. I knew a new body will come out eventually. I did my homework by knowing what the new engine would be. I had a hunch that the 2022 will be a disaster. Now I will keep my STI even more! Great video!!
OMG I AM SO GLAD I GRABBED A 2021 STI!!!!! looooooool it's going to be worth so much more than what I paid for...
right on...
Glad to have my 2018 RA
2017 STI here. Looks like I will sell it for the new solterra and save on gas. Just hit 60K miles.
Here's something for ironic... I picked up a manual truck recently (mostly so I'd have a vehicle to haul a track prepped sports car)... and that truck is a better driving experience than the 18 WRX... it's absurd tbh.
Can you explain more? In what ways is the truck a better driver?
@@ToxicityAssured It just feels better than the VA WRX... part of it is that it's manual, the WRX is CVT, the other part is (I think) hydraulic vs electric steering. There's also part of it where I'm bigger than most everything else on the road, so I feel like I can drive how I want and everyone else will make room so I can be rather relaxed with driving... even though I'm in a city.
My wife has a near mint 2016 Hyper Blue STI... I'm sure she'll take $60k for it...
Mine is world rally blue and is only $59,500... It has new tires and brakes less than 500 miles ago!
indeed...
The WRX is setting itself up for failure... people are going to push the top of the line CVT one... and they're going to end up with a 40k mess while the lower tier MTs are the ones you want to get... but they don't have the the track and suspenion features of the GT edition because Subaru hates manuals apparently >.>
Sad but what a Legacy 😎
Damn this is for sure sad news. I'm so freaking happy I got my 2019.
They could have said that earlier.
Very true...
Got a 2004. Best car i bought.
wow
Suits me my sti will appreciate
Yup
I bought a 21 dark grey metallic Sti back in September. Best decision ever. Only have 4000 miles on it and the car is worth more than it was at 0 miles. Definitely holding onto it for a very long time. Not gonna modify it either. It’s a shame that they are going away from the internal combustion engine STI.
So that means the legendary two competitors of rally racing is all gone? Mitsubishi and Subaru rally are both dead?
Why Bro
I keep asking that same question...
@@akqjtn :)
Willing to bet new STI is going to be codeveloped with the lexus IS electric
Somehow they want to rebrand it to be a electric car.
Looks like it, but it also looks like they may just be trying to save face with that statement.
This is sad...
Never sell your wrx sti, got mine back in 2017 and now it’s worth about msrp
Great, another attainable car becoming more unattainable for someone like me. Feel like I was born in the wrong time to like cars since its all gettting taken away from me.. :/
Just put out 20 versions of the last gen STI and then stop all production of future models as we know them.
Nerd alert! I love electric r/c, but... I'm not ready for, nor can I afford an electric sti. RIP STI/Subaru at least as WE know it
And here's the kicker with EV... the US power grid CANNOT handle everyone going EV, and likely will be unable to until the US goes nuclear. Anything else is a complete pipedream as gas powered vehicles just work better, especially if we're not hamstringing ourselves with our own oil production.
I wanted an STI so bad, but you can't say Gas engines work "better". EVs are over 80% efficient, while gas engines at best are 25% efficient. The reality is, we need to invest in the power infrastructure. But one party refuses to spend any tax dollars doing anything for the greater good of the public.
@@heyaisdabomb Yeah, it's amazing how they completely shut down nuclear in favor of so-called green energies that DO NOT WORK and can take an energy independent country (like Germany) and turn them into Russia's oil bitch because they transitioned from nuclear energy to green energy.
Golf R 🤔...
Or the GR
Back of the Subaru looks like a Honda……
Subaru went down a long time ago. Their hippie roots are taking over... Cvt? All electric? 🙄
It's hilarious that they refer to this love as something the market is asking for. Nobody is asking for electric vehicles but the government appointed officials pushing regulations that will destroy everything we know about cars and the lifestyle people enjoy involving them. This is an inevitable move that all car makers will be required to make. Those of us with modifications will be targeted as well. Those of you who sold your oem parts when you made those upgrades will be paying premium to find new ones when the EPA starts handing out fines for altering the emissions. He is right though. These cars are going to become very valuable. But almost useless to the average person. Gas prices skyrocketing and being blamed on conflict is a smoke screen. Inflation worldwide was purposely created to destroy our economies. This doesn't affect rich people at all. Just you and me. They want us to not be able to own these cars all together and I forsee electric vehicle rentals for us since we won't be able to afford to own one for ourselves. It isn't just buying the car. You have to convert your own electrical system at home to be able to properly charge them. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but here in the states our infrastructure is ass. We can't run ac in the summer without popping transformers. Imagine every house trying to charge their cars too?
Glad you're aware of this. I try to talk to people with this and they think this is some conspiracy or something. Makes me sad 😔
@@markayala it is a conspiracy though, isn't it? Being called a conspiracy theorist is the problem from those people. It's used in a derogatory way. As if our governments are infallible to being corrupt. I was in the military and deployed in 06 to Iraq and again in 10 to Afghanistan. I've seen what our government is willing to do and spend to get as rich as possible and I walked away with a deeper understanding of the lives that were destroyed for oil and natural resources. We called them terrorist for protecting their own neighborhoods from a super power stealing everything they had. We've done it to every 3rd world country in one way or the other. That includes the rest of the super power countries as well. With everyone aligned for green energy it isn't even a hidden agenda. It's out in the open, they literally gave us the time line and vehicle manufacturers are following that time line. We were told we would own nothing and be happy. Investment firms like Black Rock are hyper inflating housing markets by buying up all the single family homes and turning them into rental properties. Middle class people can't afford a house that used to be 250k and is now double the price. My house is worth 550 right now but if I sell I'll be paying that or higher for something comparable and I also have to worry about investment firms with unlimited money out bidding me. It makes no sense to sell right now other that to trick those who think they are getting away with selling high. Used car prices are through the roof. Sti's used are selling for more than they were worth new. Groceries, gas, heat, electric, the inflation on everything is breaking records everyday. In the US our government is exceeding the level of common sense policies you would think they would put in place to stop any of this and yet they don't. But we are too worried about what is happening in Ukraine right now to focus. A country the US propped up and armed to fight the Russians. You can be against Russian policy and also not root for a country with a literal nazi battalion (azov battalion) that have been killing Ukrainian separatist (who live in Ukraine) for the last 8 years. We funded that, because we want their oil and gas. The puppet government there is still asking for more of our tax dollars everyday and everyday we send more money and weapons. It is a conspiracy being enacted by the world leaders as we speak. At the end of the day, what can we do? Go for the ride. Adapt to the new way of living.
Toyota did.....(my guess)
WTF so late? Absolutely bullshit!
the STI has been dead since 2013.
Some would say...
Internal combustion engines are very efficient. See what a new battery costs you and see how long it takes to charge your electric vehicles. Oh yeah btw, electric vehicles are actually worse for the environment. All that lithium needs to be mined and all the dead batteries need to go somewhere. Wake up people you're being duped and lead off a cliff!
People seriously need to wake up lol. Sleeping sheep
Fortunately for me there's other alternatives. Problem with you "Subaru" people is... you're stuck on one brand. Trust me the grass is greener on the other side.
Fuck electric cars 😂😂 fact is you will drive whatever the gov says you will drive
Untuned and unmolested 2019-2021's STI will skyrocket in value! Thank you Subaru!
Thay will kill of WRX soon too
Welcome to the NWO communist world. Hey, you WRX drivers are going to love your new windmill powered STi. 😝
😂
I picked a great time to stop giving a shit about cars. Quite honestly duck the world anyway.
I’m a huge fan of Subaru and the STI but idk why everybody is crying, people didn’t even like the next generation WRX 🤡 plus everybody knew this was going to come. If anything people should be happy the STI badge doesn’t get put on this “ugly “, “disappointing” and etc. shell of a WRX that they said it is 🥱
I mean I see your point, but I would rather have the car than not at all. Cosmetic stuff can always be rectified with aftermarket mods.
