Learn German with our street interviews: In this episode Janusz asks people in the streets how to express love in the German language. We try to find out how to use the popular phrases "Ich liebe dich" and "Ich hab' dich lieb" in German and ask people how they would express love towards their partners, kids or friends.

So sehe ich es auch, ich liebe dich ist schon in vielen Kulturen extrem stark und in anderen ausgenutzt, ich sage inzwischen meinem Partner nie ich liebe dich, sondern unserem Hund lol

@@limotgirl9863 Ich find das generell so unnötig. Man vergisst halt oft, bescheid zu sagen und dann macht sich der andere umso mehr Sorgen. Man sollte sich lieber melden, wenn man Lust auf ein Gespräch hat und nicht um den Kontrollzwang des anderen zu befriedigen (Ich hab das jetzt ein wenig überspitzt formuliert, ich möchte keine hitzige Diskussion, hab euch alle lieb :) )
i met a german once that said that saying ich liebe dich was more like saying i'm in love with you rather than saying i love you making it a more of an intense or deep way of saying it
the "im in love with you" and "i love you" analogy is very good. thats also how i, as a german, would translate it.

In English we say “Love you” or “Love ya” - maybe that’s like the German “Ich hab’ dich lieb”

@@hristinapetkova8031 Du kannst übrigens auch unverheiratet deine Geldgeschäfte zusammen regeln. Der einzige vertretbare Grund (für mich) zu heiraten sind die von Staat ungerechterweise erlegten Vorteile abzusahnen.

In Italienisch haben wir einen ähnlichen Unterschied zwischen "ti voglio bene" = "ich hab dich lieb" und "ti amo" = "ich liebe dich". Ich bin sehr froh, dass es auch in Deutsch verschiedene Ausdrücke gibt, um verschiedene Typen von Liebe zu äußern! "I love you" scheint mir immer ein bisschen zu stark in einigen Situationen... Danke für dieses Video

@@grenschoneich6943 vielleicht "ich bete dich an"... ich finde, "ich vergöttere dich" ist zu stark und könnte auch eine negative Nuance haben, wie das Verb "idolatrare" auf italienisch.

I love Italian. Sadly there isn't an option to learn Italian in my school so I took the next most similar which is Spanish. I'll also go skiing in Italy this year XD

In Ukraine we have two specific wordings for that "Я тебе люблю" (ja tebe liubju) and "Я тебе кохаю" (ja tebe kohaju). The second one only applies to romantic situations, when first one is very general and may be used within various environments.
Ich hab den Ausdruck "Ich hab dich lieb" eigentlich immer schöner empfunden als "Ich liebe dich". Es klingt so warmherzig
Mir geht es ähnlich wie @JJ. Gerade dadurch, dass "ich hab dich lieb" vermutlich häufig im Familienkontext verwendet wird, drückt es für mich eher dieses Gefühl von angekommen sein aus und ist daher die größere Vertrauensbekundung (mir fällt kein besserer Ausdruck ein), auch in einer Beziehung. Ich liebe dich ich für mich wirklich rein romantisch besetzt und ich und fühlt sich im Vergleich aber etwas oberflächlicher an (mehr wie eine "Höflichkeitsfloskel" als eine tatsächliche Liebesbekundung).

"Ich hab dich lieb" drückt halt echt ein positives Gefühl von Zusammengehörigkeit aus. Und es ist universal einsetzbar - "Ich hab dich lieb" kann man auch der Familie oder engen Freunden sagen.
@@cadysia Kann ich nicht bestätigen - mein Partner und ich sagen ständig "Ich hab dich lieb". Ständig "Ich liebe dich" zu sagen wäre in meinen Ohren irgendwie too much. Überzogen für den Alltags-Kontext.
I come from Malaysia, and here we often ask this simple question in Malay. "Sudah makan?", which means "have you eaten?". It's a form of endearment to show that you care for them and their well being. 😀

"Liebe geht durch den Magen" ist ein Deutscher Ausdruck auch... aber in manchen Kulturen nehmen wir das ernsthafter als in anderen. In meiner Kultur ist das ... riesig. Wenn man die Oma besucht, braucht man für 2 Tage danach nicht mehr zu essen.

In Japanisch, wir sagen auch nicht so oft "Ich liebe dich." Wir sagen "Ich mag dich" anstelle von das. Wir sagen "Ich liebe dich." in romantisch Beziehung.
Ja ja, eine Lehrerin, die mich Japanisch lehrt, sagt, dass man in Japan etwas zurückhalten ist und nicht sagt, "Vergiss mich nicht", sondern"Vergiss meine Sache nicht"(私のことを忘れらないてください)
Im Deutschen sagen wir zu Freunden und Familienangehörigen in der Regel auch eher "Ich habe dich lieb." und nicht "Ich liebe dich."

@@m.s.5370 Ja! Wenn ich das Video beobachte, dachte ich, dass diejenigen Phrase ist sehr ähnlich zu 「大好き」oder「好き」(weil wir brauchen auch「好き」für romantisch Beziehung) und 「愛してる」.
In Turkish we say "seni seviyorum" not only to the persons we're romantically involved with but also to our family members and to close friends. Whereas "sana aşığım" can only be said to the person who is literally "the one" for you. Probably the latter would correspond to "ich liebe dich" better.

In der ersten Nacht sagte er „seni seviyorum“. Ich dachte immer, das sei noch zu früh, um das zu sagen. Ich wollte ihm auch "seni seviyorum" sagen, aber aufgrund dieser Situation konnte ich es nicht. Er handelte vor mir, und schließlich sagte ich auch, was ich sagen wollte :)
"Ich liebe dich" is more romantic, as in 'I'm in love with you', it's what you'd say to your SO "Ich hab dich lieb" is platonic (I think that's the word), the kind you'd say to family and friends

In Australian English "love you/ya" softer, used for sign of general affection, than "I love you" which using the pronoun feels extremely personal.

Similar in British English, like i will replace “thanks” with “love you” a lot of the time and saying goodbye i always say “love you”, i don’t think ive ever really said the pronoun unless it was super serious.

Hier hört man manchmal das Klischee vom steifen Deutsch(en) durch, das ich aber überhaupt nicht bestätigen kann. Ich habe die erste Hälfte meines Lebens Deutsch gesprochen; die zweite Englisch. Und noch heute fehlen mir im Englischen emotionale Ausdrücke. Ein ganz einfaches Beispiel: "Ich freue mich auf..." - englisch: "I am looking forward to..." - klingt mir auf Englisch extrem formal und trocken; auf deutsch hört man die Freude durch. Es stimmt zwar, dass 'I love you' häufiger verwendet wird als 'Ich liebe dich', aber es ist auch weniger intensiv. Das allerschwierigste aber ist "geil", in allen seinen Bedeutungen: Horny, sexy, terrific - only 'terrific' comes close (wobei "toll" wohl eine bessere Übersetzung wäre); die sexuellen Bedeutungen klingen eher flach.

In Spanish we have a variety of ways to express love, the basic two: "Te quiero", which you can use with everybody you like, and "Te amo" which is only for the ones you actually feel love for. I like to say "Uno quiere por, y ama a pesar de", which would be in English "One loves because of, and LOVES in spite of...". That conveys the difference, I believe. One can also say: "Te adoro" which is romantic only but informal: something you would say before saying "te amo". "Te estimo" is something you would use with someone you have recently met, or maybe with a coworker with whom you have more than a work relationship but less than a friendship.

Me (English) and my partner (Deutsch) say "I love you" regularly, several times a day. But, they never say "ich liebe dich" to me, and in fact when I do say it auf Deutsch, I get an English "I love you" in return 😂
go for "liebchen" or "liebling" , those always sounded very sweet to me, hopefully not my misinterpretation...:)
@@szelan Hm, I think (me as a German) Liebchen is rather used in an ironic way while as Liebling expresses the serious way. Both translates as "honey". (no, not that honey for eating!) "Liebchen, das musst du aber noch mal lernen!" = "Honey, you gotta learn it again!" "Liebling, du bist die schönste und wundervollste Frau der Welt!" = "Honey, you are the most beautiful and most wonderful woman in the world!" But in old-fashioned German songs, sometimes Liebchen is also used in a serious way. ("mein Liebchen" = my girlfriend/boyfriend, but most times it's girlfriend) Keep complicated! (motto of the Germans)

My mom isn't that good in expressing her love but she found her way in using two very personal pet names for me. It's good and important to find a verbal expression. Even if it seems low-key (like some expressions that were mentioned here, "fahr vorsichtig" for example) or rarely used - the other person will understand and appreciate it. It's like hidden signs. It's actually beautiful.

In spanish we say "te quiero" as a kind of "ich habe dich liebe". "Te amo", on the other hand, would mean something only used in a relationship or with very close familie members, it's like "ich liebe dich". For me it's odd to use "te amo" with friends, but many (crazy lol) people do it.

Ich sage zu meiner Verlobten immer "Ich hab' dich lieb", ebenso wie zu meiner Familie und ganz engen Freund:innen. Aber sie ist die Einzige, die auch manchmal "Ich liebe dich" zu hören bekommt. Das ist für mich eine Aussage, die eine unglaublich tiefe Ehrlichkeit und Zuneigung hat, und deshalb habe ich diesen Satz auch nur zu ihr gesagt und selbst ein Jahr lang in unserer Beziehung gewartet, bis ich diese Worte geäußert habe. Für mich bedeutet es "Du bist die Liebe meines Lebens und wir sind eine eigene kleine Familie, danke, dass es dich gibt!", und ich sage es vor allem, wenn ich sie ansehe und mir mal wieder klar wird, wie sehr ich mich darauf freue, mit ihr alt und grau zu werden und wie unfassbar gut sie mir tut. Die anderen Personen um mich herum hören von mir "nur" "Ich hab' dich lieb", aber das auch in verschiedenen Tonfällen je nach Beziehung. Ich zeige das aber auch nonverbal auf andere Art und Weise.

In Spanish, for friends and family, we say "te quiero", which roughly translates to "I really like you" & "significas mucho para mí/significas el mundo para mí" and that translates to "You mean a lot for me /you mean the world for me" and "te amo" (I love you) which is much more powerful for many people and you would use it with your partner or close friends and family ~🇲🇽
“Te quiero” is more like saying “I want you (alongside with me)” but in a non-romantic way, just for friends and “Te amo” is for someone actually really close to you, Simeon you really can’t “neglect” There’s really a huge gap between both expressions
@@DavisidMatius I learned "te quiero" for "I love you" meaning the romantic way and I studied Spanish and never noticed during years that it could be different from what I learned at school, so I think you're wrong and "te quiero" sí expresses "I love you" (also) in a romantic way.
@@young19boy it really variea depending on the country. There are people who never use “Te amo”, and they just say “te quiero”. Both are exactly the same in terms if meaning. The context is what can change. When I say “te quiero” to my mom, it doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t love her or that I don’t love her enough. It is just a matter of choices. Generally people learn that “te amo” is the absolute but it doesn’t need to be if you never use it. “Te quiero” can reach exactly that level too.

My main language is Spanish and when you like the relationship between someone (like a friendship, but not a strong one) you say "Te quiero", but when you really want to express a strong feeling, something really that comes from inside you (To your family or your lover) you say "Te amo". That's why I said that there's a huge gap
@@DavisidMatius Yes, but "te quiero" is the romantic one and "te amo" is rather for friendships, although it can be used romantic too; so in my opinion you made a mistake. (I studied that language long enough and have C2 level of Spanish, so I think I know that language very well - being a native speaker does not qualify you as far as a university's studies do)

In Greece we express love by saying "Σαγαπάω" (Sagap-a-o) and it's actually a really meaningful, sensitive word that we usually use with our partners, family and close friends. I think that Greek people (and generally Mediterranean people) are more publically emotionally open so we use it pretty often if we really mean it. The only alternative way of saying it in a lighter way to friends, pets etc is ''Σαγαπώ" (Sagapo). Yes, it's the same word without the letter "a" but it makes quite a difference.

@@aweider Jeder liebt nunmal anders. Und manche finden diese Bestätigungen halt schön. Persönlich kann man das nervig finden, aber ich finde man sollte deshalb nicht negativ über andere urteilen :c.
Ich merke das extrem wenn ich Türkisch oder englisch spreche, wie man viel öfters darüber spricht den anderen zu lieben. Die Worte sind so „leichter“, auch wenn sie viel Bedeutung haben. Auf deutsch ist das Wort „ ich liebe dich“ so „schwer“.😅
Hallo an alle! Ich bin Russischer. Ich wusste vorher nicht, dass Deutschen zwei Ausdrücke ihrer Liebe haben. Wir benutzen gewöhnlich nur einen Ausdruck: "Я люблю тебя" (Ya l'ubl'u tebya) oder, als man in unserer Sprache manchmal eine Wörter miteinander verändern kann, "Я тебя люблю". Das ist gleich und man kann es wörtlich übersetzen als "Ich liebe dich". Wenn wir "Ich hab dich lieb" wörtlich auf die russische Sprache übersetzen, klingt es sehr seltsam - wir sagen so gar nie. Well in Italian you can say, "ti amo" in a romantic sense, and then there is also "ti voglio bene" which is taken as less serious and could be said to anyone
Well it's not taken less seriously, it just expresses affection rather than romantic love, ti voglio bene translates ich habe dich lieb, whereas ti amo means Ich liebe dich

Surprisingly, the same thing happens also in Indonesia 🇮🇩☺️ If we translate “I love you” into Indonesian, it will be “Aku cinta kamu”. But no one in Indonesia ever said that. It’s waaay too formal and cringey. Just like “Ich liebe dich”. In Indonesia, we normally say, “Aku sayang kamu” which means “I have an affection for you”. It’s just as casual as, “Ich hab’ dich lieb”, I guess. Or… we can just say “Aku suka kamu” which means “I like you” or “Ich mag dich”.

We don't have that small nuance between "Ich liebe dich." and "Ich hab' dich lieb." as in German. And to express our love we use these kind of expressions of being grateful to get to know someone like: "İyi ki varsın.(I'm glad that you exist.)" And I think Turkish people are also not good at saying directly "Seni seviyorum." that often.

In Czech it's very similar to German - "Miluju tě" would be "Ich liebe dich" which you would only say romantically to a partner. And "mám tě rád" would be "Ich hab dich lieb" which you can say to anyone. But then it changes meaning depending on the context, it would convey a different meaning to family and to friends. But we almost never say it... I remember a couple years ago I told my parents "ich hab ihr lieb" (mám vás rád) and they looked at me like I'm crazy before they said it back :D We prefer longer hugs or we simply take it automatically that "wir haben uns lieb" since if we didn't, we wouldn't spend so much time together. And once I had this notion that yeah, you should say it to your close ones at least once, so I said it to all my closer friends individually and they were kind of weirded out by it but also quite glad to hear it, since it's a nice thing to hear, just unexpected and uncommon. And some of them even asked me if I'm alright or if something bad happened. One was worried that I'm having suicidal thoughts because otherwise why would I say it :D So yeah, if you thought that Germans rarely say it, try saying it to a Czech.

In American English, the lighter version of "I love you" is just "love you!" You use "love you" to express deeper feelings of friendship, not romantic love. "I love you" is a full commitment.
I almost think of 'love you' as a throw away phrase - not that it isn't meant, but not used with much weight. I use 'I love you' even with friends so they know I really mean it. I don't think we use it only for romantic love. I used 'I love you' to my father when I saw him or talked to him via phone.

American here: I've been married for nearly 4 decades and say"I love you" to my Korean husband nearly every day. He virtually never initiates such an expression (and doesn't always reciprocate when I say it either. 😉) HOWEVER, in true Korean fashion, he shows his love in a thousand different ways, big and small, and for this reason I consider him an exceptionally kind, thoughtful and devoted husband.

In portuguese, we say "eu te amo" (literally "ich dich liebe"). It is fairly common in our culture to say it to family members, specially parents and children before you hang up the phone, just like in english. We say "te amo, tchau" and it works just like "love you, bye". To make it lighter and better suited for those phone/not-so-serious situations, we drop the "ich".

In Italian, we must distinguish the phrase "Ti voglio bene" from "Ti amo". The first can be used in an affectionate and friendship sense, but not in a romantic sense, while the second in a romantic sense.
In Italy we usually say something along the lines of "Ti voglio bene" for friends and family which is the equivalent to "Ich hab dich lieb". For a romantic relationship we use "Ti amo". It's more serious and more personal. In Luxembourg, however, there is only one expression which is "Ech hunn dech gär/gaeren". It basically means the same thing as "Ich hab dich lieb". It can be used for both friends & family as well as romantic relationships. In order to know which version the person telling you "Ech hunn dech gär/gaeren." is using you just have to figure it out by context and delivery/tone.

Im Luxemburgischen gibt es zwei Redewendungen um seine Zuneigung aus zu drücken. Es gibt einerseits "Ech si frou mat dir" was wörtlich bedeutet "ich bin froh/glücklich mit dir". Das ist ein Ausdruk für Zuneigung zu einer Person. Man gebracht diesen Ausdruck genau so wie der deutsche Ausdruck "ich hab dich (ganz doll) lieb", für den Partner, die Familie und Freunde. Anderseits gibt es auch den Ausdruck "Ech hunn dech gären". Wörtlich übersetzt bedeutet es "ich hab dich gern", sinnlich ist es trotzdem anders. Denn "ich hab dich gern" bezeichnet im Deutschen eine "leichte" Zuneigung (es wird in seltenen Fällen auch für stärkere Zuneigung benutzt aber das ist nicht umgänglich). Jedoch drückt man im Luxemburgischen damit starke/grosse Liebe aus . Man sagt dies eigentlich nur zum Partner und selten zu engen Familienangehörigen. Dies kann aber auch zur Verwirrung füren da man "Ech hunn ____ gären" benutzt um an zu geben wenn man für etwas eine Neigung/Vorliebe hat oder etwas nach seinem Geschmack findet. Dies liegt aber nur daran dass wir kein Verb haben um weder das Mögen noch das Lieben wörtlich aus zu drücken. Wr haben nur diese beiden Sprüchen.

In Chinese we say "我爱你(sounds like wo ai ni)" as a kind of "Ich liebe dich". But mostly we would express our love through daily words like" how is the dinner" and behaviours like accompany you to the hospital.

In Spanish we have the sentences "te quiero" and "te amo" to express love. "Te quiero" would be something like "Ich habe dich lieb", it's less intense, and "te amo" would be more like "ich liebe dich".
In Philippines, the equivalent for Ich Liebe Dich is Mahal Kita/Iniibig Kita/Iniirog Kita in Tagalog - one of the more than 175 languages. Most Filipinos I know, like me and my clan rarely utter these phrases. We say Kumain ka na ba? (Have you eaten?) or Ingat (take care) to show affection. 💞
The last time I said "I love you" was 10 years ago which marked the end of my friendship with that person because the feeling wasn't mutual. In my native language traditionally we almost never say "I love you" unless it's very serious, but lately some people tried to make it more casual.

In Afrikaans we say "Ek is lief vir jou" same as 'Ich liebe dich', we say it mostly to a partner/family member or very close friend. 'Ich hab dich lieb' in Afrikaans "Ek het jou lief" we rarely use this expression, pretty formal and old-school. 'Ich mag die Easy German KZhead videos' = "Ek hou van die Easy German KZhead videos"
