  • I just wanted to add my mustard: Blau machen kommt von der Blaufärbung von Stoffen, die immer wieder gefärbt und getrocknet werden mussten. Wenn man also "blau machte" hatte man relativ viele Wartezeiten und Pausen, man saß rum und "machte blau".

  • Die Redewendung "Wenn man vom Teufel spricht" gibt es auch in der italienischen Sprache. Dazu sagt man manchmal "...so tauchen schon seine Hörner auf!" :)

  • In Nicaragua, not in Mexico, instead of saying "Talking to the devil" we say: "Hoy no te morís", wich means "Today you will not die". I dont know why. Thanks for your great content.

  • Ich bin ein Fan ihres Kanals aus China. In China gibt es auch eine ähnliche Redewendung wie " Wenn man vom Teufel spricht.”, heiß “Wenn man von Cao Cao spricht, kommt er an.”( Wenn man direkt übersetzt.) Cao Cao ist eine echte historische Figur und auch Protagonist von The Romance of three Kingdoms. Ganz interessant. Ich habe viele aus dem Video gelernt. Hilfreich, Danke!

  • Interessant zum Thema blau. Ich hatte es auch immer auf die Blaufärberei mit dem Färberwaid und dem dazugehörigen trinken von (leicht-)alkoholischem Bier zurückgeführt. Aber offenbar ist es gar nicht so sicher. Toll finde ich, dass Ihr immer Eure gesprochene Sprache haargenau so niederschreibt. So kann der Lerner nachvollziehen, was tatsächlich gesagt wird und was nur ein Verhaspler, Stolperer oder Ähnliches ist. Weiter so!

  • Hätte ich irgendwann diese Redewendungen fließend anwenden können! Dann wäre ich der glücklichste man in der ganzen Welt. Aber dafür soll ich immer wieder intensiv üben.   • In Brazil instead of "to make an elephant out of a mosquito" we use "to make a storm on a water glass" (fazer tempestade em copo de água) and instead of "step in every bowl of fat" we say "step on the ball" (pisar na bola)

  • We have some of the same idioms in English. Just a few: - "Wenn man vom Teufel spricht" should be translated in English to "speak of the devil" and it means the same thing. When someone appears while you're talking about them. - "Aus einer Mücke einen Elefanten machen" translated to "make a mountain out of a molehill" is correct, but exaggerating doesn't explain it properly. We use it to say someone is making a big deal out of nothing, or over-reacting to a minor issue, and that's pretty much what was portrayed by Cari and Janusz in their example.

    • Australians (and Brits also, I'm pretty sure) also say 'speak of the devil'. I don't think I've ever heard 'talk of the devil'.

    • I would say that "talk of the devil" is much more common in British English, because it refers to the topic of the previous talk, or conversation, or speech.(not speak) If you like the word "talk" is being treated as a noun, not a verb. Having said that it is difficult to be dogmatic because Britain has many regional dialects. In some parts of the country "speak of the devil" as a abbreviation of "to speak of the devil" might be the usual form. If so, I have not come across it.

  • cari! im brasilien sagt ofter " nimmt das pferd aus dem Regen" das bedeutet: ein Wünsch wird nicht passiert(geschehen). z.b. Ich fahre heute mit deinen Auto. - dann sagst du: nimmt das pferd aus dem Regen. mit mein Auto fährst du nicht.

  • Das mit dem Blau ist interessant. In Blumenau - Brasilien (eine deutsche Besiedlung) sagt man "Alles blau" wenn man sagen will, dass alles gut oder alles ok ist. Es gibt sogar traditionelle Lieder die sagen "Alles blau in Blumenau" :) Vielleicht kommt das aus dem Titellied von unserem Oktoberfest? Die letzte Strophe ist so: "Hallo Blumenau, Bom dia Brasil, Alles gut, alles Blau, Alles Himmelblau in Blumenau".

  • Das mit dem Urin stimmt. Um Stoffe mit Färberwaid zu färben wurde dieses mit Urin gemischt. Die Zugabe von Alkohol hat den Prozess verbessert. Allerdings wollte man nicht den guten Alkohol direkt in die Urinbrühe schütten, also hat man den vorher ausgetrunken. www.farbenundleben.de/kultur/blaumachen.htm

  • Wow! These are all used on the east coast of the US as well, except for "are you blue?" which here would mean "Are you sad?" and the elephant out of a mosquito one. As an equivalent we would say "Blowing things out of proportion." Ich habe nur keine Ahnung warum. Danke für das Video !

  • Im Uk haben wir die Satz 'every Tom, Dick and Harry' fuer jederman. Zum beispiel 'We were late, but he still had to stop to speak to every Tom, Dick and Harry on the way. I was furious!'. Jeder kennt ein Tom, Dick (Richard) oder Harry.
