    • It took him 8 minutes to sink to that point, and george's advice of laying flat probably works in the first 2. If you lay down flat and try to float the moment you see you start sinking, you should be mostly fine. The reason you sink is because your whole body weight is on your feet; by laying flat you're multiplying the area by well over a dozen times while keeping the same mass.

  • I think me and my cousins came across really slow acting quick sand. The tide was out and we wanted to get to this small island in a bay that we always wanted to explore. Half way there our feet kept getting stuck in the sand and we could pull them out but our other foot would sink faster. There was no where to stand that was solid. We ended up getting really muddy and covered in wet sand. My main concern was my parents getting mad at me for getting my clothes all covered in wet sand. ( We would lean forward on the beach or fall over cuz we lost our balance, that's how the sand got on our clothes) Anyway we gave up on the island and just returned to shore but if that sand was any looser we could have ended up in proper quick sand.

  • I once stepped on a patch of quicksand walking across a beach like that. It was a fair way out, too, so nobody within shouting distance, which could have gotten me into a really ugly pickle. Luckily, I had good reflexes: as soon as I felt my foot not meeting the expected resistance on the ground while taking a step, I shifted my weight to the back foot and got away without trouble. It felt a bit like missing a step, so it does wake you up to the situation and gets your reflexes going quite quickly, but I was lucky to notice the lack of firm ground while my weight was still balanced between both legs.

There is this area of the coast that looks more like a swamp and I had to cross it to reach the other side but about half the way I was sinking in quicksand. Luckily there were some rocks nearby. It required lot of strength to reach the rocks and then pulling my legs out.

    • Madara Ryuzaki Uhh... Animals arent over harvesting the oceans, leaking oil everywhere, and generaly just making asses of themselves like we are. When a particular species overpopulates, nature corrects and reigns it in. We've neutralized most natural influences that would do that, and we're clearly not intelligent enough to curb rampant breeding on our own... So...

    • Actually animals overkill other animals everyday. You just don't know about it because it's in the wild. All it takes is a little common sense not to spew out garbage that you have no knowledge about other then what you find on the Internet.

  • Panic can lead to death, but it's such a drawn out process. The way quicksand works is like a vacuum and it does take time. If you instantly sank into it super fast, then there's likely a lot of water and it would be easier to get out.

  • I saw on a video in this scenario, you sit down/lie down, then you have to _slowly_ backstroke your way out of the quicksand. That's how you get out if you are by yourself and you walk into quicksand by mistake.
