The brush out is so very iportant, I appreciate your thorough instruction, and REALLY looking forward to seeing the mentioned upcoming Havenese groom, and yes, the face is often where other videos fall quite short of accurate for this specific breed. hopefully little Snoopy will be your (perfect) model again :-), but so glad to have found your grooming site, with appreciation for the Havenese breed! Thank you very much! i must go now and subscribe! :-)

    • Twice a week?? I have to do it every single day because his sister is an American Bull Dog who slobbers on him all day long. H e has an interesting hair gel which is what it looks like after they've played all day long. He's grown to enjoy his brushing so he basically gets tangles but not knots. I can't imagine if I skipped a day.. He is only 41/2 months old. I'm going to keep his hair long. I've seen way too many Havanese grooming fails. I do have a question, he gets a piece of hair that goes up by his eye too. I brush him wet but not until it is dry, should I brush his face until it dries?

      @3artsofhealing233@3artsofhealing2336 жыл бұрын
    • @@3artsofhealing233 I've heard every day too! However I don't do a full body brush every day. I have a malamute and the advice I've heard is like do a section every day. So back legs one day, torso the next, front legs after that, then ruff, head, tail, then start over on the back....So I guess it works out to about two to three times a week?

  • Thank you Rudy...a groomer once told me only to use a comb...and brushing my two Havaneses takes for ever...I have to do tiny sections trying to work out knots and trying to hold hair section so it will not pull on skin and hurt my babies. I was always worried about scratching skin while using the slicker brush. My male looks just like Snoopy. 😉

    @scotts.5573@scotts.557311 ай бұрын
    • A comb is always best on a Havanes, but it has to be done daily,and the must remain knot free at all times,or else you will find yourself yanking, and pulling on his coat causing pain..Although using a Slicker, may sometimes break the hair, it also can be the more comfortable option ..

      @GroomingByRudy@GroomingByRudy11 ай бұрын
  • I'm watching and grooming my dog at the same time, except our grooming position is always having her in my lap! I like this method of short strokes with the slicker. I normally would have used a pin brush first, followed by a comb to get the knots out, then the slicker to smooth it. But the slicker first is working and doesn't seem to be breaking her top coat. The only thing I would suggest is that, as an owner, mats don't have to be shaved off. I just carefully work them out with a comb, picking at it from the outside edge and working in to the middle of it.

  • OMG no one in my area knows how to brush my Havanese, He mats so easily and this video is so helpful. I can brush him one day and the next he can be matted. And he knots quickly to. • Very helpful video! Thank you. Am planning on getting a Havanese in Spring 2018 (am on waiting list of v good breeder). Had a Bichon frise who lived to be over age 17, so I'm prepared for the daily grooming, I think. Will look forward to more of your grooming tips for this breed. I'm thinking that for the first year (I hope less) I'll have to keep our puppy in the puppy cut, and get her used to grooming. Snoopy is such a great guy that I'm hopeful we can have ours grow a coat before the first birthday.

    @dianacambridge38@dianacambridge386 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Diana. Sorry for such a late response, i could have sworn i replied to you. Considering the growing popularity of this breed you can expect plenty more videos on Havanese. If you have owned a Bichon in the past than you will most likely be more prepared for the daily upkeep than someone who hasn't.

    • Rudy, came back again to watch -- the entire vid, which is SO helpful, and added bonus because Snoopy is so lovely, what a great boy ... so wanted to tell you again this vid is very helpful, even inspiring. Inspiration helps, when it's a Hav who'll need 2x to 3x per week brushing. A question: I was consistently told to not bathe my Bichon frise more than about once per month (ish), although of course IS done if they get muddy. This did work for our Bichon, maybe even LESS frequently than 1x/month, with her somewhat delicate skin. Is this the same recommended interval for the Havanese? ... Thanks, and we're looking forward to more vids on care of Havanese breed -- but we do watch your vids on other breeds and subjects, too.

      @dianacambridge38@dianacambridge386 жыл бұрын
    • Hey Diana,Thank You so much,for the rewatch.That means so much to us.The videos are meant for just that,so that you can reference,and become more practiced.To answer your question about bathing,I usually tell my customers to not bath any more than every 3 weeks to not dry out the coat,or skin.Also,always do a thorough brush out prior to every bath,and if bathing often, try to use the most mild shampoo you can find,such as a tearless puppy shampoo..There are some great products that you can use to help keep your dogs coat clean in between baths..We use Show Sheen,just spray some on,and brush it in.Its a great dirt repellent..Thanks Again for watching..

  • This is so informative, thank you! I’m going to tag this video for reassurance during my daily brushing. My Havanese Teddy is just a year old and is getting better about the brushing, but man, it’s still a struggle. I have found that separating the knots with my fingers works so much better than trying to brush it out first, and Teddy to,erases the finger detangling much better. I have super curly hair and I’m the same way! Get away from me with that brush! Thanks again.

    @chrisallen1934@chrisallen19345 жыл бұрын
    • Try a Chris Christensen wooden brush with spray detangler. That was recommended on a lot of Havanese sites. My Hav never minded that because it doesn't hurt. He would lie on his back while brushing which was a huge change!

    • Hi J,Thank You,for your kind comment.Daily wiping,with a warm clean rag,or cotton,will help.When you have her groomed, you can ask your groomer,to go short under the eyes,by either using a clipper,or a thinning shear..If she matts up quickly under the eyes,ask if they can just clip out under the eyes in between grooming appointments .Maybe every 3 weeks.It will prevent the matting..

    • Jean..Thank You for your kind comments..Yes,we do use cream rinses,and detanglers..Just make sure to do a thorough brush out,prior to the bath,and also we use a product called Show Sheen..that works great for static ..Im not to keen on whitening shampoos,i find there not all that effective,and tend to dry out the coat if used to often..Not a whole lot you can do about the staining,except to change there drinking water,and possibly switch to an all natural raw diet..All dogs are different ,and some have a lot more acidity in there saliva then others,which will cause more staining..Thank You again for watching us..

  • Fantastic video--you have a great teaching style. One question: Do you mist/dampen before brushing? I've read that you should never brush the hair dry--or you could break the hair. But then I've also read that you shouldn't brush the hair wet--the hair is elastic wet and the stretching means more pulling at the dog's skin (or something like that). So which is it? Or is a light misting the happy medium? Thanks!

    @dgarrison322@dgarrison3222 жыл бұрын
    • Thank you so much ! That is a great question, yes light misting is a happy medium BUT depends on breed, for example, Havanese, yes some light misting is a good idea, but say a Poodle? Not necessary, you won’t break the hair on a breed like that.

  • Thank you, Rudy, for the informative video. My most awesome15 year old Maltese died in February, and I'm considering getting either a Havanese or a little poodle. I kept my Maltese in long, coat but not show coat, and brushed him every night. But, that's a single coat, as you know. Which coat would you say is the most like a Maltese as far as grooming goes? Thank you very much!

    @bethomansky7139@bethomansky71395 жыл бұрын
    • Hey Beth,so sorry to hear that your Maltese passed away..I think that the Havanese is closest to a maltese coat,more so than a poodle..They are also very smart,easy to train,and very lovable..Good Luck,with your new pup,and let us know how you make out with him,or her..Thank You so much for your kind comment,and for watching..

  • You should brush a coat after it has been lightly misted, never dry as you break coat. Use a live in conditioner or a detangle spray.

    @marnac65@marnac65 Жыл бұрын
  • Is this applicable to all coat types? Because ive always heard that too....brush with the grain of the hair growth....but ive recently heard for malamutes to brush against the grain to make the hair stick up all fluffy. I also notice when he blows his coat i get more hair out going back and forth: with, against, crosswise to and then with the grain again.

    @MarsellaFyngold@MarsellaFyngold5 жыл бұрын
    • The process would be the same, however the tool would be different. On a malamute you would want to combine the slicker brush and the rake. However if it was a show dog both the process and tools would be different. Our Shelty video may be more helpful. kzhead.info/sun/htaYkaqAaoSei4E/bejne.html

  • What if I prefer to keep my Havanese‘ coat a bit shorter, approximately 2 1/2 inches? Where I live, it’s very hot half of the year, and the other half is slightly cooler, but still pretty hot and humid compared to other parts of the world. I don’t want my Havie to overheat, so how will the grooming differ with a shorter coat?

    • I read that the long coat keeps them cooler, but my Hav loves a short coat & acts like a puppy at 13 yrs when it was cut. In the hot humid climate of the southern coast, he definitely loved a very short coat in the summer tangle-free & low maintenace!

    @Cyn7040@Cyn70406 жыл бұрын
    • Hey Cyn,sorry for the late response..It is not uncommon,for a dog to not like the brushing process..If your dog is knotted,or matted,don't try to brush it out,it will only make her hate it more,and she will associate the brushing with being pulled ,or yanked on.You can try to clip out knots,and or mats,and try to brush her little by little,with no tugging,so she knows that the brush is not gonna pull on her coat..if she is matted or knotted,you may have to give her a shave down,and than start brushing her everyday,even if she has really short coat,just to get her used to it..It will give you a fresh start..
