There are many times that we need to screw two thin objects together and we are unable to make a fold due to their thin width. The solution to this problem is given by the rivet nuts!

  • Your machining is great to watch regardless of the build. Btw, pay no attention to the negative comments. They seem to forget that people enjoy making the tools they use vs buying the cheap ones. It's likely something they either have no talent for, or they're too lazy to do it. *Great job.*

    • I’ll second that. With the skills, equipment and desire to make these types of things, it is so satisfying overcoming design challenges and producing such a great tool. I’m on here as I want to make one as backup for my existing tool. The bolts in the keyway was a genius way of stopping it from spinning.🇬🇧

  • When you guys are installing rivnuts, with whatever tool you have, here's a tip: Drill a hole one size smaller than the rivnut, then take an EZ-out or similar tapered sharp tool with several surfaces and tap it into the hole until you can just barely fit the rivnut in. You want to make a few small cuts on the inside so the hole isn't perfectly round, sort of hexagonal to a degree. The rivnut will mushroom out and fill the irregular shaped hole giving it a secure grip. I'm not certain of the processes that go into it, probably vibration or deformation from repeated torque, but eventually rivnuts will just get loose and spin around...making the bolt you put in there pretty much a permanent feature if you put the rivnut in tubing. If you can reach the back side with pliers, you might get it out, otherwise you have to get out the cutting wheel or a dremel and hack the bolt off, then take the part off, then hack away at the loose rivnut so you can put a new one in. This little tip circumvents that because it'll still hold even when it loosens up over time. If you notice the rivnut isn't holding tight, probably best to install a new one even if it still works. I experimented with drilling through the flange on the edge of the rivnut to install a tiny roll pin, and while it works great to keep it from spinning, you have to be really precise with its location or you might drill through the threads or weaken the rivnut itself. It's easier to just modify the hole than install a roll pin. Another experiment I tried was to add an internal lock washer under the flange, that worked better than nothing but they eventually get loose and spin as well.

  • Loved the machining process and workmanship. A very simple tool is made by drilling a hole of the bolt size in the end of a piece of 1/4" or 3/16 flat stock of a width of about 1/2-3/4" and about 8" long. Now place the bolt through the hole. On the other side of the tool, place a star washer over the bolt and then screw the riv-nut on to the bolt so the star washer is between the face of the flat stock and the shouler of the riv-nut. Push the riv-nut into the work piece and then tighten the bolt with a socket or driver of your choice. The star washer will hold the riv-nut from spinning while you tighten and it compresses. The one I made has a couple different size holes on each end of the flat stock for different bolt sizes. Very cheap and simple tool that works flawlessly and takes up very little space in the tool drawer.

  • Being a machinist, and mechanic all my life. Good work on the machining, with exception of the knurling on the shaft for the bearing. Mistakes are made sometimes, but that is just a future wear point when the knurling wears off. Also i watched this and its entirety, hoping this was going to be a tight area tool... yet it was not. Hence the amazon 89.99 tool is pre practical even if it breaks a few times lol. Good job though.

    • Brilliant? Spending hours on an inferior design? Needs about two feel of clearance and an anti-torque bar to use as well as you having to provide the power drill. $25 would have purchased a ready-to-use, short clearance, tool that doesn't torque when used. Stupid unless you just want the Rube Goldberg machine of threaded rivets.

  • Great video dude, you know if you replaced the 2 Allen screws that locate the key way with a kind of spring loaded button, bit like you have to lock a grinder, you could plunge it in too compress you rivnut and then release it and use your drill in reverse to spin it back out whilst holding the body, save having to manually remove it or remove handle and spin the whole tool. Love watching stuff like this, you can learn so much 👍👍👍

Hold bolt with allen key and spanner (wrench) the nut nut onto the Rivut until it's tight. Remove the "tool" and its job done. It's not fast but it's cheap and quick enough for the odd repair job.

  • I made mine much simpler that is free (or 1$ if you don't have a bolt, nut and a piece of plate iron): rivnut-long bolt- nospin washer (angle iron with a hole in it)- nut - head of the bolt. So you need 4 hands for this: keep the angle iron steady (this will keep the rivnut from spinning), keep the bolt (by the bolt head) steady so it does not spin, tighten the nut pushing on the angle iron on the rivnut head and mushrooming the rivnut while keeping axial pressure on the bolt so the rivnut head is flush on the surface. Now most of the needed hands can be replaced by eyes or other tools: I do rivnuts on bike frames and that angle iron has two holes in it at correct bottle cage spacing. so i put two rivnuts in one go and also the angle iron is steady and not spinning. (this can also be ziptied or clamped, or just keep an eye on the bottom angle iron not to spin), I choose a torx or allen bolt that can be easily held still by a screwdriver while keeping it pressed (one hand) and then tighten the nut with an open end or even better a ring spanner with ratchet - way faster.
