Real hand grenades vs. 660 kg / 1450 lbs steel box! How many grenades the box can take before exploding? Do we need to fill it with water and use hydroforming to destroy it? We will find out that in this important experiment! We also film all of the explosions with Chronos high speed cameras to get really nice slow motion shots.
"What is a lot more?" PommiHenkka, 2021. 🤣 If you want to see how the box was made check out Henkka's video kzhead.info/sun/hcmRhtx_oZijpac/bejne.html There is English subtitles!
What was the distance your team was away from the detonation? Was there a metal roof on top ?
Now you got to convert this project into an explosive water cannon 5,000,000. Make it vertical, and put stuff on top of the opening. Can you imagine the height some stuff would get too!
@@johnchung6900 about 400 meters and we were under heavy duty farm equipment. The large pieces (the whole sides of the box) can't fly that far with these amounts of explosives and small parts (fragments from the welds) are easily stopped by the heavy duty machinery.
SUCH A COOL VIDEO!
"We been really lucky we didn't loose any cameras!!!!!" Um you forgot to add OR PEOPLE!!!!!! F me the speed that side panel shot past the camera you would have needed to be behind something more than a little substantial not to get taken out by it. Damn that had some force behind it. This has to be one of the most interesting videos to watch that you have made so far, just for that couple of seconds of footage as the panel went past. I can't wait to see what you come up with next. :)
Remember kids - things can start to get dangerous once you pass the 1 kilo of C4 mark
So we should use a max. of 999g then !
Hehehe😂
@@casemodder89 Yes, that way it will be safe! /s
Yeah, but just barely.

And fly right past the expensive cameras. 😃

That's my fetish too. We should skype
It's definitely something I have never seen in action. I've heard it but not 2inch thick steel lol
"...so the welds were good, even if they broke. The problem was 2 hand grenades." Best commentary.
I don't think it would had broke if the box was formed entirely as a single piece..
The welds broke because it was the area of least resistance because the center area of the plate isnt fused to steel
Props to whoever welded the box when a weld can take enough force to the point that an inch of steel bends before it breaks is incredible
2 inch 50mm
Would be a great addition to your resume. Potential employer: So, what sort of welding experience do you have? You: **shows welds can take 4 dry grenades or two grenades with water to the point the steel bends before the welds break** Potential employer: o_o hired.
"Camera is a bit shaken from the near death experience." Priceless! 🤣

I broke my spinal (Back) some month ago, so when I launch it was so funny that it hurts as hell! I can't imagine how bad It's feeling If you don't die that anvil accident.. It's pretty sure like Lauri said "game over".. No hospital, no fancy medics.. Or If you can live without your head so then..
I like how the explosive expert really knows what he's doing. "FOUR hand grenades!" "Uh, how about just two first."
"There is nothing wrong with the welds, the problem was 2 hand grenades" lol. I've heard a lot of excuses from welders but that one takes the cake.
Nothing like seeing PommiHenkka get actually scared by Lauri's suggestion
"3kg of c4" ... "No... but more than 1kg."
Sketchy as fhuck... Don't try this at home, you will die. Ok. I won't. Great advice!
yep :]
Yea, I've never seen Pommi back down!
Also Lauri suggested 4 granades and Pommi said: "no, let's try 2". And the almost die with 2 lol
The sight and sound of that thick steel plate flying towards the camera is legitimately scary! You were not wrong, this is one of your best videos.
But it's also hilarious how the thumbnail has him pointed at the explosives like, "Bofa Deez"
This is why they teach you to duck into cover after shooting your RPG at the target during anti-tank training.
Please don't escalate this. Let's find other cool things to do. That plate cutting 25 cm into the ground 50 meters away was terrifying.
It was f#cking terrifying! I actually flinched, I rarely flinch at stuff in the real world! My first thought was I hope those guys were nowhere near that!
It reminded me of when fpsrussia almost got hit by a truck door. It was worse because it flew right past him
I'm fairly certain the first hand grenade in water broke a good portion of the inner welds, and that if you had done one grenade the second time, you would have had a similar result. But two grenades was still the right choice because where one is enough, two is always better.
Yes, it was over for the box once the damage from the first grenade in water went past elastic deformation into plastic deformation. At that point both the steel plates and the welds were compromised and I, too, am pretty certain that another single charge would have split it open.
There were no grenades
Watching the videos that show some of the construction of the box, it appears there were only some small tack welds inside, compared to the massive layered welds on the outside.
@@jrotcelite it passed its yield strength. Yield strength is NOT ultimate strength. TECHNICALLY the steel plates still defeated water + grenades. The grenade defeated the welds, not the steel plate.
@@mitchellward5739 idk if u blind or some but there were clearly many grenades.
"the welds were great, the problem was the 2 hand grenades" love it
"the welds are ok, it was the two hand grenades" given metal fatigue is a real thing, I would say the welds were great! it survived 20? hand grenades total?!
I wonder how many welding rods they used to construct this thing. Im thinking maybe 200.
@@ryanmalin They MIG welded it using a Kemppi X8. Look it up if you’re interested in welding, it’s pretty badass.
@@ryanmalin They said about 60Kg of welds in the previous video
Could be improved, welds done properly are stronger than the steel itself.
Welds were a little skimpy though, if you wanted full thickness, the welds would have a radius of 1" rather than flat... still entertaining result. And before anyone pounces on me, I say this as a journeyman welder/fabricator with 25 years experience.
Oh my god, I love that stereotypical Finnish straightforwardness. "Don't try this at home or you are going to die."
A lot of folks in the USA probably still won't understand this...
Great example of how much force the air absorbs compressing, and how much force water transfers not compressing. Awesome video!
I love the reverberating sound the box makes when the grenades explode.
There is a saying in civil engineering: "As the amount of explosives increases, the number of problems incapable of being improved asymptotically approaches zero."
Which way the problem is improved- better or worse- is up to your definition.
Can you plot this on a graph?
Nuclear or hydrogen bombs cannot even destroy a mountain...
@@prandomable Only because you're not using enough of them. Proves my point.
@@josephcote6120 it would take hell a lot of nukes to even destroy a little mountain just saying LOL!...there is like no amount of nukes in this world that could wipe out Himalayan mountain range. Maybe just lower Mt. Everest (at best) and probably will need countless amount of nukes just for lowering Mt. Everest. Also there are no nukes powerful enough to destroy an asteroid only 9.7 km (6 miles) wide according to NASA's scientific prediction...they made a video explaining why. Asteroid 6 miles wide is obviously too BIG for even the biggest nukes to destroy.

We love y'all! Thanks for the shows, Finland rules!
Utterly terrifying. I had no idea merely 2 hand grenades had that much concussive power. That's a ton of steel and it blew apart like a dollhouse. Also this really makes you appreciate when they do explosive hydroforming of steel spheres, to think of just how carefully calibrated that explosive needs to be to turn a dodecahedron into a pufferfish, without rupturing it entirely.
it's the water...a piston engine will happily run sucking air for thousands of hours, but let it ingest water and the conrods (which aren't exactly toothpicks) will bend with the 1st attempt of compression. If those 2 grenades had no shrapnel-producing casing, you could probably be fine mostly standing 10m from the explosion (RIP eardrums though). Do the same in water and you'd suffer injuries prob. even 50m away. High-grade explosives are no joke ;-)
@@AKAtheA What makes you lucky is that the human body is mostly water. Check the experiments done by the teams around Jacques Cousteau and Hans Hass shortly after World War II. A human diver is more likely to survive a nearby underwater explosion than a submarine (at the same distance to the explosion).
not just two hand gernades. two plus water = BIG difference

@@norbertfleck812 - Hydroforming enters the room.
@@norbertfleck812 the problem was the weld, and it was also thinner. The welds were very very impressive yes but it STILL finally gave up. If the box was formed entirely without any thinner welds. Wouahh best Video ever! Sound, explosions, all is perfect!
This is as good as the Mythbuster cement truck moment. Legend.
After all of these years I hate Mythbusters for the fact they went small scale and then right to the big explosions and even though they were big and awesome they hurt the story on many projects. One example was when they used the 2 inch thick sheet of steel to try and flatten a car with explosives they went all out rather than scaling it up to see what they could do. They just splintered the sheet. Another one was cherry bombs in the toilet where they capped all the ends and blew up toilets. They clearly know that is not how a plumbing system works. Some of the things they did were stupid and went way overboard.
@@kameljoe21 if you're not a fan of stupid and overboard, what are you doing on this channel?
@@guadalupe8589 Your reading skills are really poor. I said that Mythbusters went small scale to right to the big explosions. They never finished their myth to see what could work. For example they just packed a cemet truck with explossive and blew it up. They did not even try it know the concrete out of it. They just blew it up. At least we got more than a handful of shots from this explosion. Even the video before this one as well. We saw the progression of its explosion. We saw that it can launch a cool bowling ball and an anvil to great heights..
@@kameljoe21 nope, reading skills are perfectly fine. Deal with it
@@kameljoe21 The impression I got from mythbusters was that they would do an experiment to test their myth and faithfully perform the experiment. Then, if that failed, they would go overboard and have some fun. The point is that they did actually thoroughly test their myths, and blowing everything up was plan B.

Next time try making a wield-less steel box. Make or have someone make a steel box that was molded as one piece, then perhaps reinforce it with (wielding) tungsten.
Tungsten is heat resistant and certainly quite hard, but it's actually an extremely brittle metal. You wouldn't want to use it as a reinforcing material.
@@dustinbrueggemann1875 you were probably thinking reinforcement on the outside. I was thinking more of reinforcement of the inside of the box. I forgot to clarify where the reinforcements took place.
@@kranker114 That doesn't change the fact that tungsten is not a suitable structural metal.
You should return that defective box to the manufacturer for a refund!
Actually giving them the pieces for analysis would be useful to them. And the WTF looks on their faces would be worth a video of its own! As an Engineer I'd like to have a look at at it myself as Forensic Failure Analysis was a large part of my career! Now retired... ;)
Correct. The cube is new enough that it should be still covered under warranty.
I think "blast proof" is meant to cover "from the outside" and not "from the inside with a structurally weakening hole cut in the top."
@@demef758 Especially as that box was supposed to be blast proof... Obviously when they welded it, they left the plates too cold, so the weld didn't completely fuse the plates together.
@@armntic The plates had straight edges and that made them weak, as the weld had nothing to grab on... The hole on top just relieved some of the pressure from the blast.

11:41 That plate flying is probably the scariest thing on the channel
Best part was when the top piece landed 😀 huge blast, flyng chunks of steel and when all went finally silent, a random blop 😂
This is absolutely epic! Slightly dangerous? Yes, for sure, any time you make a hundred kilo steel plate fly in a random direction at 20 meters per second it officially qualifies as “slightly dangerous”. The folks that built that box should be congratulated for their skill. You filled it with water and a hand grenade and almost nothing happened! If I ever need something welded I’m calling those guys for sure. Just be VERY GLAD you didn’t use water and four grenades, the results could have been disastrous.
In this case the squares flew in a predictable direction. Check the drone footage of all four walls flying directly where they were facing. Just a little bit less force and two of the walls could've held together and gone in a completely different direction though.
Because you said it, they're gonna feel the need to build a new box out of even thicker steel and use water and 4 grenades.
@@BikerDash the "steels" technically still defeated the grenades + water. The weld broke due to it being thinner and probably weaker too. They DO NOT need a thicker box, they just need to find a BETTER way to hold the steels together even more.
The water + grenade defeated "the welds". NOT the steel plates...
