Real hand grenades vs. 660 kg / 1450 lbs steel box! How many grenades the box can take before exploding? Do we need to fill it with water and use hydroforming to destroy it? We will find out that in this important experiment! We also film all of the explosions with Chronos high speed cameras to get really nice slow motion shots.

F me the speed that side panel shot past the camera you would have needed to be behind something more than a little substantial not to get taken out by it. Damn that had some force behind it. This has to be one of the most interesting videos to watch that you have made so far, just for that couple of seconds of footage as the panel went past. I can't wait to see what you come up with next. :)

    • Yes, it was over for the box once the damage from the first grenade in water went past elastic deformation into plastic deformation. At that point both the steel plates and the welds were compromised and I, too, am pretty certain that another single charge would have split it open.

  • Utterly terrifying. I had no idea merely 2 hand grenades had that much concussive power. That's a ton of steel and it blew apart like a dollhouse. Also this really makes you appreciate when they do explosive hydroforming of steel spheres, to think of just how carefully calibrated that explosive needs to be to turn a dodecahedron into a pufferfish, without rupturing it entirely.

    @MattsAwesomeStuff@MattsAwesomeStuff2 жыл бұрын
    • it's the water...a piston engine will happily run sucking air for thousands of hours, but let it ingest water and the conrods (which aren't exactly toothpicks) will bend with the 1st attempt of compression. If those 2 grenades had no shrapnel-producing casing, you could probably be fine mostly standing 10m from the explosion (RIP eardrums though). Do the same in water and you'd suffer injuries prob. even 50m away. High-grade explosives are no joke ;-)

One example was when they used the 2 inch thick sheet of steel to try and flatten a car with explosives they went all out rather than scaling it up to see what they could do. They just splintered the sheet. Another one was cherry bombs in the toilet where they capped all the ends and blew up toilets. They clearly know that is not how a plumbing system works. Some of the things they did were stupid and went way overboard.
