It sounds like the stuff of science fiction: A Boeing 747 with an internal hanger loaded with 10 specially designed fighter jets. An on board crew to launch, recover, refuel and rearm the jets while in mid-flight. Sleeping quarters and a crew lounge to ensure that a squadron of 14 fighter pilots and 18 mission specialists stay rested. All of it hurtling forward at Mach 0.85, 35 thousand feet above sea-level. That’s asking a lot from a Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet. But a once classified feasible study prepared for the U.S. Air Force details how it could be done.
An Airborne Aircraft Carrying Boeing 747 might have been an overly-ambitious, overly-complex and ham-handed idea from 1970s, but it wasn’t entirely out of left field. The U.S. Military had been experiment with the aerial aircraft carrier concepts for nearly half a century. In the early 1930s, two U.S. Navy airships, the USS Akron and the USS Macon carried up to 5 planes stored inside an internal hangar bay. These airborne aircraft carriers enhanced the Navy’s seaborne scouting ability, and the airships’ onboard planes could be deployed for further scouting or defensive purposes. But both USS Akron and Macon were destroyed in weather related accidents not even 3 years after their introductions, helping to put an end to any future airship-based aircraft carriers. But the experiments continued in the 1940s, this time spurred on by a need to protect long-range intercontinental bombers. A seemingly sensible solution to extending escort fighter range was to have long-range bombers carry escort fighters onboard which could be deployed and recovered when needed. But the promising concept proved far more difficult in reality, with aircraft recovery being a particularly dangerous endeavor. Multiple docking methods were attempted, but only one version using a trapeze mechanism and a full-sized fighter ever saw limited service. By the mid-1950s, aerial refueling had proven itself to be a far more practical and safe solution to extending aircraft range.
Yet, the Air Force reexamined the concept again in the early 1970s. This time, spurred on by perceived strategic vulnerabilities to conventional seaborne carriers and the new opportunities brought on the enormous Boeing 747 and Lockheed C-5. The feasibility study titled #747 #Boeing #FlyingAircraftCarrier

I think if we revisited this concept today, we might be able to get it to work. Folding wings, like on the Hornet. New alloys to cut weight. I think it could be done, but I don't know if the fighters would be a match for now 6th gen full size fighters. And we have planes that can drop precision guided munitions and then do their own air to air fighting.
One word: drones
This was 2 years ago but I think some drones could actually put up a fight against certain 6th gen fighter *coughs* Russia *cough* and even then I don’t think bandits would risked getting ripped apart by AAs and other jets
I think this could work with remote-controlled drones being controlled by people INSIDE the AAC. You launch a drone that has guns or missiles. It shoots bandit, and goes back. You can save a TON of space with something like this, and it would be super easy to train pilots.
@@senzanome7302since when does Russia have a 6th gen fighter. The 57 is a 5th gen fighter *only* if you listen to Russia. The 57 is really a 4+ gen considering it’s about as stealth as a B-52 and it carries ordinance that makes the tomcat look modern. Another thing, we have the capability to strike any target in the world in under 24 hours. We have FOBs, Aircraft Carriers, and Cruise Missiles capable of more destruction and superiority over an airspace than any drone carrying 747 could hope to carry.

Too bad the Russians rolled out their 4th generation fighters (Mikoyan MiG-29) way ahead of its time. Fortunately we had our own versions and now lead the aviation industry with 5th generation fighters. With no one to compete over the air space, air dominance will remain so for the U.S. Air Force. Then again, these Americans are willing to make "micro fighters" and dump them to conscripts or allied countries who can't afford stealth fighters, falsely advertise as the 21st century version of the P-51 Mustang.
Behbeh fighter jets are so cute when they're little!
Pilots say "If it looks right, it'll fly right," and the Goblin flew as well as it looked ... which wasn't very good. It was difficult to fly, it only managed to safely dock with its mother ship three times, and once all that was out of the way they discovered it was 100 MPH slower than the fighters it was meant to intercept. maybe the AN225 class aircraft would be suitable for this project? since the Antonov 225 is very big and the only 6 engine driven plane, has a lot of space too that can fit an ok amount of fighters
If Russia owned it/them, they most likely would’ve constructed one. The fall of the Soviet Union left them essentially broke and could no longer support it, it was purchased back from Antonov, the aircrafts creator, and is solely used as heavy cargo transportation. But there are two(?) uncompleted 225s in storage, so if they really wanted to (if they even had the money and resources) it could be possible.

@@diaz6636 Think the concept is for combat drones, like a strike force or QRF. Current long range/high duration drones are big surveillance or nuke drones like the Global Hawk. Something like the Predator requires ALOT of lead time on missions and has a shorter range when armed. A C5 with several predator sized drones could carry several different kinds of weaponry/sensor packages the predator just can't manage on quick reaction missions. Also, consider the impact of AI tech on air to air combat, if a C5 could deploy even lets say 5 predator sized drones with sidewinder similar weapons platforms that is instant airspace control...then they can recover them, refuel/maintain them, and keep them on mission for as long as the aircrew can handle it.
This is so weirdly nostalgic in a way, I remember reading about a similar concept in Bill Gunston's "Future Fighters" when I was a child. This idea is right up there with the supersonic bomber. Even on Navy carriers the elevators and launch systems experience failures all of the time. Imagine the tiny fighter pilot asking to be brought aboard only to be told that the recovery system is down and he is low on fuel. Or a damaged tiny fighter trying to be recovered that will not fit the profile of the system. Drones are a much saner way to accomplish this mission and can be designed to fit the carrier aircraft without the concerns of a human pilot.

Hi Mustard, I recommend looking into the Boeing 747 Cruise Missile Carrier Aircraft (CMCA). It's an unrealized concept where a Boeing 747-200F's main deck is fitted with revolver-style ammunition cylinders that move along built-in cargo-handling rails. The cylinders take turns positioning themselves near the side cargo door to launch their payloads. Refer to US Patents 4208949 and 4475436. Lockheed had its own thing going with US Patent 4040334. While this may not be worth an entire video, I think you and your team might be interested in looking into the subject matter.

@@tammiestait5465 what war crimes? Its the same thing as a guided missile. They can actually see the face of the person they are attacking with those missiles. The only difference is that collateral damage would be minimized. Guided bombs are the same as drones, except they can only fall. Missiles have a limited flight time. A drone would have the ability to stay on station for hours, it would be more target specific and thus less risk to others nearby. This is basically the concept of Project Pluto, the single most terrifying weapon devised be mortal minds (that includes Zyclon-B and Agent Orange). It would have been a supersonic, RATO-launch, nuclear scramjet powered multi-payload ICBM. - It would launch from ground via RATO boosters, or air launch via a specially-modified B-52, travel at Mach-2+ until it reached its drop zone, within which it would launch its multiple megaton-yield submunitions (twelve, I believe). Once it expended its payload, it would deactivate overheat/overspeed safeties and travel on-the-deck at Mach-3.5+ over populated areas while leaking radiation, it’s supersonic wake destroying buildings and ripping up roads. After it could no longer function above acceptable levels, it would ditch reactor shielding and crash into the target nation/force’s capital (at the time, The Kremlin), making the area uninhabitable for years. - The thing about nuclear powered aircraft is, barring systems failure, they have virtually unlimited range and flight-time. Once launched, this missile, called the Supersonic Low-Altitude Missile, or S.L.A.M. (best name for an apocalypse machine ever, by the way) could strike anywhere, at any time, and considering it would be below radar detection altitude for at least 70% of its operational lifespan, you would never see it coming.

I agree, I think he can do a 777x video exploring the folding wingtips, he can even talk about the navy fighters. I think another great topic would be VTOL aircrafts and go in depth on the Harrier and the F35B, and explain why the VTOL concept is not applied to airliners
Just watch all the old ones...
But old planes are more fun... particularly the ones that didn't succeed. I'm holding out for a Fairey Rotodyne
The Antonov An-225 would be very interesting!
@@max.32430 More interesting will be the imaginative plans cooked up by the Soviet engineers for the plane. Similar to this video .

In Soviet Russia, airports ARE aircraft!

The video was very informative, but I was MOST IMPRESSED by the way the SkillShare sponsorship slid into the video at the end. Kudos, I will now consider SkillShare the next time I need to expand my trainings.
we need to develope this so we're one step closer to the ultimate weapon: the aircraft carrier carrier

Heck yea
Wtf
YOU FUCKING GENIUS
Fighter drone swarms make this a very potent weapon if you ask me. Outfit the mother craft with some heavy fire power, especially defensive weapons to take out incoming projectiles, and I'd be curious to see what it can do. Hold these comments though I'll watch the video later.
For some reason I have the phrase: CARRIER HAS ARRIVED stuck in my head now.
