On this segment of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation, Alie Ward meets with Mili Gevorkyan, the marketing manager at SkyTechSport, to learn more about the technology that athletes use to perfect downhill skiing skills without snow.
In combination with virtual reality, a computer analyzes pressure, position, and the angle of the skis. It then sends information to the simulator's motor to recreate bumps, ice, and other conditions.

  • Amazing. How much does the whole system cost (hardware and software) and is it and where available for purchase?

  • Huh, why does this look so easy compared to normal carving? I have so much difficulty trying to edge the skis properly on the slopes and always end up skidding a little.

    • Well, obviously there is some balancing mechanism in place, otherwise her body composition of rotating shoulders and inclined upper body would definitely make her fall on an actual slope.

  • I have like 10 hrs training on this machine. My skiing is way better, almost carving on slopes.

  • The movement is not accurate, as in reality the feets are not always in parallel, an improvement would be to be able to keep one/both feet front/back to each other

  • There is no risk of crashing on moguls or crossing tips. This wouldn’t do it for me. If you want to burn off your Papa John’s, it’s fine. Learn to do the zipper line on a mogul run, not so much.

  • This doesnt look very realistic. Especially as a beginner you will have huge problems, to not cross your skis, how do u want to learn that on this simulator. It can't even happen.
