  • This is fantastic! I’m so happy you are committed to living a permaculture life for ALL our children. Since I retired almost two years ago I have dedicated my time to learning and practicing a regenerative lifestyle. My little five acres is my responsibility to nurture and treat with respect. I have fallen in love with soil and am so excited to wake up every day with the opportunity to show it the love it deserves. I have started a worm bin and it’s fascinating as well. It’s a ring side seat to the life of soil. At some point you guys should try it. Once you understand the needs of the worms it’s really very easy and takes very little time. The reward of the castings as well as the experience of watching the worms do their important work is so rewarding! Love you guys! 😊❤️

  • That was fabulous, I loved farmer Crusoe listening so intently. This is such an important part of us living on the planet, respecting it rather than abusing it. We’re all so used to cheaper foods that are not necessarily the best for us, or the land. If we ate better quality food, that is food grown in good soil, I’m sure we’d all be healthier as no contaminates could get into the food. It’s always good to know where your food comes from. Lots of luck on this journey, it’s so exciting to think what can happen. Highs and lows I expect, but that’s part of heading into the unknown, take care x

Our petrol mower died a couple of years ago and the grass grew long and wild, we saw so many butterflies and insects it was amazing! We've since bought a hover mower and don't cut the grass very short and leave the long grass around the edges. My lawn was the only one that didn't die in the drought this summer and there's still plenty of wildlife around. Adaptive gardening is definitely the way to go!

    • When I had my first garden it was a pocket hankerchief about 10x10 m in London. During the time I lived there, I never cut it I just let the grass grow, but removed most of what I considered weeds. It was a luscious patch of grass and like yours Claire, it was full of wildlife The grass only ever got to a certain length, and never looked a real mess - as in winter it would die away to about 2 inches long at best. I called it my eco meadow! I loved walking bare foot in it. Thanks for the video about regenerative planting it was very encouraging.

Its a fascinating journey and you are more than half way there with established fruit and natural tree's on your farm, it's hard work but very rewarding and your little ones and you will be healthier and more content with life. It was great to know there are regeneration farmers around few but around to learn from them, key is rotation and irrigation, even leaving the land to its own regeneration with no planting for one year as to give it rest, as mentioned in the Word of God to do it every 7 years. Hope you are well Tara you getting closer to your delivery date, prayers are with you. Enjoy this restful time with Crusoe and John. 👍🙏🥰💖🌺👏

  • How very exciting! I wish I was back in my twenties again, to plant and plant and look after the soil. My dad was a sugar famer. He would be very interested in the 'new' farming methods. I remember he used to plant fields of beans for a. To put nitrogen back in the soil, and b. Feed his staff! He also used to leave fields to 'rest' I live in the city but I have a worm farm and we harvest rain water, we use it to water the plants! I'm very excited to see what the Newbys are going to be up to when you get back to Portugal! Lots of blessings from a hot, dry Highveld no sign of rain yet!!!🇿🇦

Fantastic well done 👍👍👍👍

  • Wonderful to see more people spreading the news about permaculture practices. I'm doing a course right now to help our land succeed. It's so important to build our soils, the crazy thing is that today's food not only destroys the soils and the planet but it is less nutrient rich and less good for us. With better practices we can feed the world with less food that would be more nutrient rich and help us to grow and thrive. I don't know how we get the big agri businesses to change their practices. But we can all do our little bit. Thank you

  • Loved this! I really enjoy documentaries that focus on how we can change our ways and fix the damage we've done. Kiss the Ground, which you mentioned in a previous video, is one of my favorites. I grew up on a crop and dairy farm and my father died a miserable death from multiple cancers I know came from all the chemicals he used on a daily basis. I'm looking forward to watching you guys do it the right way. I'm so glad you're sharing your journey with us and teaching us as you learn as well.

  • I can honestly testify that a little to no dig method plus leaving things to die down over winter without tidying it all up and not using pesticides and artificial fertilizers has been the very best thing i could do for my garden. I grow vegetables alongside flowering plants and i try my best to include as many native single flower plants. My garden and vegetable growing has gone from strength to strength plus i have a garden teeming with insects and wildlife. Everyone comments on how lovely my garden is and i really do vey little to it - just a little bit of taming now and again. I am really looking forward to seeing how you take all this invaluable knowledge and learning and create your own bit of paradise.

  • I had 8 acres and planted almost everything for the animals. I also had a pond dug for frogs, newts and anything but fish. (They eat everything else.) I had some flowering shrubs, bulbs, trees and crabapples and other nurturing berries, nuts, apples, peaches, mulberries and a vegetable garden. I loved it until my body wore out and I had to sell. I love that you are careful to share with wildlife.

  • So pleased you are embracing premature and regenerative farming. We have a small strip of lawn comprised.of grass, clover and a few other plants that have self seeded. The little birds of several species love it and feed on the seeding grass if we let it grow a bit.and generally peck around for insects etc.If you have a bird bath nearby with a branch to perch on and a bush to nice in , they will love it! A lawn is also essential for running under the sprinkler in summer!

  • If you take care of the soil organically, it will will take care of you, as an organism forever. Yes, it is harder at the beginning, there is so much to learn, but eventually it will be the the most environmentally and financially, viable way to live. It took me a few years to learn how to make and create organic living soil, composting and the other zillion things that will become second nature. Can't wait to follow you on your journey. The best to you and yours.

The veggie one was the size of a football field the other was half the size. I loved it miss it very much. We had cows, horses, pigs, chickens, and ducks. Of course a dog. I really miss it. We had our own smoke house which was our well house also. My mother could douse for water so we could always find a great source of water. Love Sundays!!!

  • My partner and I have always had a veggie garden. I grew up in country NZ in a time that everyone had a veggie garden. My partner is English and he had an allotment. We now live in Perth Western Australia and have sand not soil so composting is essential. It’s very difficult to grow veggie in the heat but our best growing time is spring, winter and autumn. We do manage leafy green in summer with shade cloth. We have a fig tree, Lemon, lime, mandarin and a feijoa tree all on a small block. Our neighbours come by for their lemon and limes regularly as they fruit most of the year. We love our little garden and their is nothing as nice as going to the garden to pick fresh herbs while you are cooking. Good on you for all your do and I really enjoy watching your vlog. Thanks

So I found tonight's vlog very informative and motivational. Good to see Crusoe eating fresh fruit / vegetables each week. Crusoe should grow up to be a healthy boy. • Hello Tara John and Crusoe what a truly wonderful visit to that farm I thoroughly enjoyed watching it , the problem with the de line of birds and insects is the loss of trees and hedgerows ,and when I was growing up the hedgerows had blackberries and raspberries growing in them and wild strawberries on the ground and mushrooms to which my grandfather used to take us for walks and collect these take them back for my grandmother to make pies and Jams , this was in wales a wonderful childhood and my grandfathers very long garden to which he grew just about everything . He would dig a hole the size of a bucket where all the peelings egg shells all kitchen waste plus fluff and dust from the house and the bucket under the wooden seated toilet at the bottom of the garden . Even now I have a popcorn bucket in my utility which I bring into the kitchen and all the waste goes into it then I dig a hole and bury it just like grandad but I cannot keep digging hole non stop as I only have a patch as it is orchard and all stones, but the little bit I do have I am putting nutrients back into the soil and less waste into the wheely bin. The more I watch Crusoe the more I want to hug him and can understand John wanting to spend as much time as possible with him he is so Comical fresh cucumber looks good and I had to laugh in one of your clips on your farm when Crusoe is holding the hose and moves it towards John I cracked up sorry John but it was funny . You have many happy years to come on your farm and a wonderful life for your children when the other makes an appearance and that means many more times for us to join you and watch Crusoe growing up thank you so much stay safe my friends ❤

  • I’m so excited that you are going to use regenerative and permaculture practices on the farm. I have been watching tons of KZhead videos on this subject and thought your farm was a perfect candidate for using ponds, swales, and berms to capture water and create a food Forrest. Justin Rhodes has a a regenerative farm and has a good channel to learn from, and Roots and Refuge farm just moved to another state and are building their new farm from scratch and are using regenerative practices too. Their mission is to teach people how to grow their own food, so are a good resource. I am trying it on a small scale at my urban home in Oregon, trying to build up the soil and create a better, healthier place for my daughter.
