www.comicsforbeginners.com - Is there a right way to hold a pen or a pencil when you draw? One of my KZhead chanel followers seems to think so. And it's NOT how I hold a pencil!

  • That is the exact same way I hold a pencil too. I never knew it was different until I was trying to teach my son how to hold a pencil and my mom said "you're doing it wrong!" Lol I can't do it the "normal" way either.

  • I love this video. It is interesting to see someone else that holds their pencil differently. I've also never been able to hold a pencil the 'correct' way. The way I hold mine though is I kind of hold it inbetween my thumb and middle finger, kind of curling my index finger ontop of the pencil.

  • Sir I just wanted to let you know, I've been having pain in my wrist and fingers no matter what position I hold my pen or pencil. However I've just tried your grip now and.... well it works great! No pain XD

  • The person who left that comment was a real troll. Good for you for taking it in stride! You make me want to explore different ways of holding my pencil and stylus, instead of giving that dweeb a piece of my mind. What you offered was much more helpful!

  • Oh my god! I seriously thought I had to learn how to hold the pencil differently (I am anyways but just to make my right hand more opposable) but I hold the pencil just like you! I hope neither of our careers get cut short for carpal tunnel syndrome :D

  • I also did have notice Palle's "not so standard" way he holds the pencil but obviously it works so good for him that any polemic is pointless. It depends of the art type I'd say. For standard comics penciling, I hold it regularly, but for some other stuff, especially when I set the drawing board almost vertically, I hold it with thumb and pointing finger, like pastel or chalk perhaps. Mostly when do shadings etc...

    • I recently stumbled across this strange phenomenon. Watching TV, where we usually see American movies and shows, I noticed that many people hold pencils in strange and incorrect ways. So, I thought it was strictly an American phenomenon, until one day I noticed the same thing in a British documentary. That got me curious and I started paying attention to the way people in different countries hold their pens. I searched online and checked many KZhead videos of schools, universities, individuals writing, celebrities signing autographs, politicians signing documents etc., and I realised that incorrect pencil grip is rather common all around the world. Then I travelled to Germany and saw the same thing in person. So, it seems that we here in Bosnia (and possibly former Yugoslavia in general) can be grateful for a very good educational system, because I never see that here. Everyone holds a pen in the same, correct way. Writing skills were always very important in our schools, from handwriting to spelling and grammar. It also explains why our children are usually very good students abroad, even when they went there as refugees.

  • I hold a pencil in a similar way, except my hand looks really weird, I can't hold a pencil any other way.

  • There is not really a 'right way' to hold a pencil (or a brush, or pen, or any tool really) & if the way you hold it works for you then that's YOUR right way. The point that is often missed, I think, is taking breaks; to not retain a tensed & flexed grip for too long, & to stop BEFORE you get pains in hands or wrists.

  • - This message is directed especially to that "total idiot" who suggested this. Today is considered discrimination. - What should we "the normal guys" say about those who draw with their mouth or feet ??? "That is completely wrong as they hold the brushes and we should not let them paint "??? - Overall my message to everyone is, if you have a passion for ART dnot'o be discouraged by those who try to bring you down In ART there is NO right way, there is just ART - Here are some examples of disadvantaged people and very good artists A Chinese man paints with his feet and his mouth bazza west painting by mouth ben nevis

    • Awesome, Roman, congrats! I had the same experience with my teachers. Every time I changed school they would call me out for holding the pen wrong. Now that's how I make my living. Feels good :-)

  • Hi. Don't hate me, but watching you hold your pencil that way freaks me out! I'm glad it works for you, but I wonder what your actual handwriting/cursive looks like vs. drawings. Also, the way you were told to hold your pencil by teachers is "wrong" too. You are resting the pencil in the crook between your thumb and forefinger, which makes writing across the page virtually impossible. Instead, the pencil should follow the line of your forefinger, resting against the top knuckle of your forefinger. I can write this way, for hours on end, with a pencil, ballpoint pen, marker, fountain pen, calligraphy pen, with no cramping or pain. Don't hate on me guys. Just trying to be helpful.
