    • ... It is not a bad pick. They need a QB of the future... They Loved penix. Kirk Cousins is essentially trash.... he is an older version of Dak Prescott. Great in the regular season total GARBAGE in the post season. Cousins is essentially on a 2 year deal which give Penix 2 years to sit and learn which is apparently a great thing looking at Mahomes and Love. So yea... This was a great pick and your take is trash on this one.

  • I could see them using him as trade capital, but I think essentially their plan is 2 years with Kirk and then move on to Penix, especially after looking at how Kirk's contract is structured. Sucks for Kirk and his family to be uprooted thinking they would be there at least 4 years and then learning it wil probably only be 2 years. It's a business, but this has obviously been in the works for a while. Their excuse for not telling Kirk was it was a sensitive issue and they didn't want other teams finding out. In other words, they are telling Kirk they don't trust him. Hell of a way to start a relationship.

I agree a team should focus all their energy when in their window to win. You shouldn't sell the farm but definitely everything should go towards improving the team now. I understand the criticism but it is the reality that many teams do this now.

The league screwed him on a bad call against the lions. Offensive PI on a touchdown catch. The league later changed that call during the next week but our season was over and he left. Coaches like him and Tomlin are the dungy coaching tree. Trust in it. They are solid people and coaches. Tampa loved Ra.

But this has effectively been a full circle that started when Raheem Morris interviewed to be Dan Quinn’s replacement and was determined not to have been good enough for the job at that time, only to be given the job the next time he interviewed after the guy who beat him out was fired before the sun could even hit the ground for the first day of Offseason 2024. Hmm, I'm a Vikings fan and I can say for a fact that Kirk feels threatened by any QB that might take his job. He goes out of his way to not provide any advice. 2) The Falcons can just trade Cousins midseason or after the 2024 season. Hmm, Kirk has a no trade clause and he's not going to uproot his family and move to another city. Also what team needs a QB so bad that they will take on his contract? That said if Cousins goes down with a serious injury this year then the Falcons will look like geniuses.

  • If their plan was to draft, Michael Penix the entire time… then why the hell did they even bother signing Kirk cousins? You could’ve gotten another veteran for significantly cheaper to play as a bridge quarterback. Like, they could’ve just went and grabbed Gardner Minshew before he signed with the Raiders. He would’ve been a perfectly cheap option that would make a perfect bridge quarterback. He plays for maybe one year and then you start Penix afterwards. • Atlanta, gotta love it. You just trade for a massively expensive experienced QB. You just use your 1st high impact 1st Round Draft Pick Selection to get a TOP 10 player, and its a QB for goodness sakes. Cousins has a few years left on his gun belt to be your STARTER. You just Drafted a young fella with hopes to be a STARTER more sooner than later. Your Cap Space takes a whack just on hiring on Cousins. Then this guy is gunna sit maybe his first contract and then demand, a massive QB contract and by then maybe Cousins will be too long in the tooth and expendable. In the meantime, you are tying up huge cash in Cap Space on two QB's. One, as a Backup for at least 4 years. Money that could have been spent on peripheral players to protect that STARTER QB. Lord have mercy, did Atlanta screw up.

  • Well, I'm a Pats fan and this make sense. If Cousins will bring what the Falcons expect him to bring, they won't pick in the top 20 the upcoming 4 years. Then Cousins is out, and they will start to look for an early pick, since they expectedly will play bad after Cousins for at least a season. How do you know that you will strike with that pick? They were lucky with the transition from Vick to Ryan, but not that much after Ryan. Now they try to correct the mistake. Just look at my Patriots after Brady. And I'm not sure that Maye will be the long term answer at all. He would need 2-3 year on the bench, but behind who? The Falcons tackled this issue.

    • In the previous tampering cases where action was taken, the GM, owner and /or coach contacted the player about a new contract. That didn’t happen in this case. Kirk didn’t talk to the GM, owner OR the head coach either. He is rehabbing an injury an injury and talked to the head athletic trainer. And of the teams that were penalized…the player was not dealing with an injury. None of one of what happened with Kirk / Falcons rises to the level of tampering that the other teams were penalized for. In only the most serious case, the Dolphins lost their first rounder. And in none of other tampering cases that were FAR more serious, no players were suspended.

There is no better situation for Penix Jnr. than to watch and learn how a true pro like Cousins prepares and be ready for when he has to go in. After the number of injuries that happened to starting QB's last season all the comments about Penix Jnr sitting for at least 2 years seems stupid to me,the odds are he starts multible games this season. The flipside is the Dolphins who have Tua,a QB who has never beaten a legit team from December on and has been given a saloon ride in the QB room with no competition since they dumped Ryan Fitzpatrick who was always better than him.

  • Penix wants to play not ride the bench. If Kirk's achilles isn't healing that's one thing but they are going to have two issues and neither are good. 1. As soon as Kirk throws a couple INT's the crowd is going to start screaming for Penix. Or you have factions within the team that want Kirk then others that want Penix and it divided your team. 2. Kirk wins just enough that you waste a bunch of Penix's rookie contract and he just basically rots on the bench and for 4 years you're in the high teens to low 20's limbo in draft position.

Especially when you have a chance to get a guy this high and can groom him for 2 or 3 seasons to get him ready to start one day. Far too often teams throw QB's into the fire too soon.

Rodgers had a not great year the year b4, Love dropped in the draft, Love was young compared to Penix, plus the Packers didn't just pick up Rodgers in free agency for 4 years right b4 drafting his replacement. They should've traded back and gotten a defensive player or never given Kirk a 4 year deal. It might all work, but they wasted a pick that could've helped them win this year: Odunze, Turner, etc.

    • I think he throws weird. It looks like he only throws with his arm when QBs need to use their whole body. You know who does throw an accurate, tight spiral? Kirk Cousins. kzhead.info/sun/YLZ8mJFxpJuAdnA/bejne.html Sean McVay on Kirk....."People say Kirk doesn't have good arm strength!" McVay said, sounding incredulous. "I don't know what film guys have been watching, but he can make all the throws, on time, in tight windows. I think this guy's arm talent is incredible. It's special. Coaches all talk about it, but I don't think this guy gets the credit [from the general public] for the natural stroke and consistency he displays. The ball comes out quickly and he throws a nice, crisp spiral that makes it catchable. I think when you really saw his arm talent was that Sunday night game we played against the Packers in 2016 (a 42-24 Washington victory at FedEx Field in mid-November). The wind was just howling; it was brutal. When you're down there in warmups, as a play-caller, you're thinking, 'Man, I have to alter some of my calls to account for this.' But I didn't have to change a thing." Mike McDaniel on Kirk...."in his first start against the Browns, Cousins did something even more mind-blowing. Said McDaniel: "We have a keeper where he rolls to his right and there's a guy dragging across that's his first option. Leonard Hankerson runs a post on the backside to clear out the safety; he's like a non-option. And Kirk, on the move, throws it 60 yards across his body and hits [Hankerson] for a touchdown. That play survives in our teach tapes because it's the only time it's been thrown. I love it when that happens, 'cause now I can show that play every year to our receivers and say, 'See -- it could come to you -- so run your fastest.' "

  • I think this boils down to if you agree w the premise that Michael Penix Jr (MPJ) is a future franchise qb or not. If you do, and the pick falls into your lap at #8; then, you do what the Falcons did and select him. If you believe he's NOT; then you fill out your roster with other skilled positions and get any other qb in the later rounds as a project. I agree w the Falcons that MPJ will be a franchise qb. And the timeline w Kirk Cousins and the Falcons personnel was what baffled me - him being almost twice the age of some of his teammates. But I think they just want their young players to experience the post-season. And Kirk Cousins at bare minimum can get his team into the wildcard games. For ATL, not getting in to the second season for YEARS, they decided to bite the bullet and go w Cousins. But, I can definitely see MPJ becoming a franchise qb within his rookie contract. And his age, is right along with the skilled positions on this team - so that they all can grow together.

    @SincerelyYoursWill@SincerelyYoursWill10 күн бұрын
    • it was a dumb move simply because of timing, by the time Cousins contract is up Penix will be nearly 28 years old and his rookie contract will be up lol. The time to win with a young QB is when they are still on their rookie contract which wont be the case when he takes over. And they wasted a top 10 pick on a 2nd round prospect while they signed Cousins to a massive deal which indicates that they are in a win now mode and if thats the case you take a day 1 cant miss starter with a top 10 pick.

      @britneyystaples91@britneyystaples9110 күн бұрын
    • @@britneyystaples91 "they wasted a top 10 pick on a 2nd round prospect" is really the summation of your position. I already stated that if you believe that Michael Penix Jr is a franchise qb; then the ATL falcons decision to choose him at #8 is a brilliant move. You believe that he's a "wasted top 10 pick on a 2nd round prospect" - so you believe there is little difference between his career trajectory and every other qb below. And given how offensive heavy the 2024 1st round draft was; betting on MPJ being available in the 2nd round was not happening in 2024. ESPECIALLY since there were a record overall number of qbs & wrs drafted in this year's first round. Additionally, I've YET to see an NFL quarterback make it to the Pro Bowl after an Achilles injury. Aaron Rogers & Kirk Cousins both are former pro bowlers. But are you certain that in their future seasons that they can withstand the punishment of playing the qb position for multiple years? I don't. And it appears that Atlanta feels that way too.

  • When Cousins was first signed with Atlanta the 'pro' talking heads all seemed to say, "this gets them in the playoffs, but can Cousins take them all the way," with the resounding feeling being that, no, Cousins does what Cousins does, sits in the pocket until he throws or the pocket collapses. I for one do not believe Cousins is making it through 64 starts, and somewhere between zero and sixteen playoff games without an injury. And I think if we read between the lines, Arthur Blank ain't giving Cousins more than two years to get us to a Superbowl. Blank ain't getting any younger. As a Falcons fan I can say that I feel ok about Cousins, but not great. Penix, if he is anything like they think he's going to be, I'm all for it. I was content with the pick, can't wait to see the guy take his first snaps when Cousins gets hurt or can't make a start. Plenty of defensive and offensive options to choose from during the rest of the draft. We'll be alright.

That is the silver lining. However, they had a great opportunity to bolster their defense with some of the talent that was still available at the time. Penix Jr was a huge investment for what I would consider an insurance policy.
