Why Better Tires are Faster than More Power

Everyone wants more power, but there's a lot you can do to your car before cranking up the boost or boring out cylinders. We’ve talked about weight versus power, and we've talked about suspension versus power; but there's one thing that can get you more of a performance advantage than all of those. It's the stuff that actually touches the ground: your wheel and tire setup. So what makes a good wheel? What makes a good tire? And why the heck do they mix metric and imperial so much?! Today on B2B, let's see if we can get to grips with mechanical grip.

Donut is a youtube channel and wants interesting videos that people watch and to make the video interesting they pay for things to put into the video, not the car itself most likeley since its Jeremiah's camaro but what i was saying with my comment was that Jeremiah probably asked donut if they could do a show with his camaro and that results in some nice mods to his camaro, yes there is a possibility that Jeremiah is paying for the things aswell.

    • @@purwantiallan5089 They're everywhere on KZhead -- once a channel hits some threshold of viewership, they really pound the comments... Having a lot of early (Notification Squad-type) comments also is the key for the bots -- notice that they only reply to other's comments, not post new comments of their own. The bot accounts are subscribed to all of the big channels, and when they get notified of a new video, the bots scan the comments and auto reply to everything they find. Perhaps a way to combat them is to upload with comments disabled for some period of time, then open up for comments after the bots have been triggered. But that would have to be done manually, as I don't think KZhead gives creators the tools to automate that.

    • Whilst I do wish Science Garage had a successor, I wish they'd just rename this B2B as Science Garage (so same content, just use the old name)... Then bring back the original B2B aswell with James (reviewing specific cars, like that ME E30 with the engine swap)... With that in mind, they'd have to lose a series aswell, which for me, would be D-List, as no matter how many times I try to watch it, I just can't

  • Forgot where I heard it from, but I remember an experienced tuner say that if you're gonna mod out your car for performance, always start from the outside going in. As in the progress line should be wheels and tires, then brakes, then suspension, then intake, then exhaust, then finally the engine. It kinda annoys me so many wannabe racers always do it the other way around

    @nong333@nong3332 жыл бұрын

  • My friends always wondered why I always took a podium position in Forza whenever we used to play all the time, even though I had a "slower" car. It took them too long to learn that power means nothing without proper grip. I always buy the tire and suspension upgrades before adding power so I know I dont have to worry about losing traction. This is also why once I get my RX7 running again, I'm focusing on the suspension and tires first before slapping a turbo on, even though everyone I talk to want me to turbo it asap lmao

  • Best mod I have ever done in all my (many) years of modding - tires. Tracking a car for years without proper tires was not only wrong but it taught me to learn new ways to drive. When I finally ponied up for a set of RE-71's my car was 100 percent a different machine. I had to re-learn the car so much so that it became too fast. Funny to say that but it was too fast for autocross. Tires should have been first and brakes second.

    • @@julianpenton1675 Totally valuable lessons learned, you are correct. I did teach myself to drive very aggressively and on the limit with the wrong tires. • The LACK of information in the automotive world about tires is downright scary. Not many know what date codes are or what they mean. Not many know that all season tires suck ass in all 4 seasons. Not many know that all weather tires exist. Not many know that the recommended pressure lives on a sticker in the car and not printed on the tire. Not many know that two different brand 275/40R17 tires are actually different sizes. Some brands run larger than others for the same given size. And not many know that cars have 8 springs, and only 4 of them are damped. The tires are the other 4 springs. And pressure and construction affects the rate of those air springs.

  • I bought a car with a staggered wheel setup, whereby the fronts are narrower than what could fit in the wheel wells due to increased offset. After watching, I am convinced that ditching the staggered setup is the right way to go. The fronts would be further out, but narrower while the rear would be nearly maxed out. Thanks for the insights on contact patch and pressure. Lucked out by buying a second square set of used forged wheels by accident.

I swapped from a top-end all season tire (Conti DWS) to top-end summer tire (Michelin 4S) made my daily driving much more enjoyable. There was no more wheel slips when kicking down. I got winter tires a few years ago and it felt the same both terms of driving stability and safety as well.

Then you’d have a comparison to a proper track tire vs a road tire (comparison for a first time track day), and then a track tire vs the optimal size of track tire and high end wheel.

  • The first time i experienced the shock of the grip of low-profile tires was with my first Audi Quattro. As standard it came with 15" wheels and 195/65/15 tires. Of course couple of months in and me being 22, i decided to get 18". The only tires i could fit w/o rubbing were 245/25/18 (you always want 235/30/18) but even with the worse option it was incredible how much more pronounce the surface feedback was and the amount of grip you have. Of course it didn't take long to find the negative side of the low-profile tires - just the very next day hit a pothole and had to replace both the tire and the wheel. But ever since them i always go for 245/35/18 as a default choice on my cars - comfy and grippy. Of course now i always make sure beforehand that the car can fit them :)
