It will be added to the banned substance list, leaving many players in a race against time to wean themselves off it.

I saw what it did to my dad when he went to hospital for hip issues. the moment they gave him tramadol he slept like a baby at night and i thought it was a miracle drug. His whole mood was just better with tramadol. But luckily he was taking it under hospital supervision and after a week they stopped it , he still struggles with sleep but the drug is too powerful when i noticed how fast it changed his mood and sleep.

Hi, please make sure your Dad is investigated properly and thoroughly. Hip pain is really easy to brush-off as "joint wear" as per x-ray but in some cases it can be something more sinnister. Please demand a high contrast imaging e.g. MRI. I work as a doctor and I've seen this so many times. Do not hesitate, do it as soon as you see this comment. A few important things here. 1. If you are having problems with drugs then you are not weak, not stupid, not broken, and not alone. 2. If you need help there are people waiting to help you - your GP, or the Frank service in the UK. Even 111 can help. 3. I'm a bit disappointed Tifo don't put these details in the videos and hope they do in future. 4. Some of the comments here from apparent doctors condemning users etc. are not particularly helpful. As well as the stick there needs to an coherent offer of help and guidance from football authorities. This woulf both help to clean up the game and help people as human beings.
Nope it does mean you’re weak and unstable. However, you’re not alone and there is plenty of non pharmaceutical help for mental or psychological issues.

@@mobaumeister2732 you're wrong, but even if you were right-which, remember, you're not-"weak" isn't a particularly useful metric here. addiction is something to which some people are more predisposed than others, and that predisposition is affected by a wide variety of variables: genetics, childhood trauma, the environment in which you live, etc etc. some people may have a predisposition that never becomes addiction, but that's not a product of willpower-it's a product of environment and circumstance.

Tramadol itself is not "Evil", I have seen the good it can do in an acute setting. It seems in football it has been prescribed, supplied and administered irresponsibly. While i agree with the spirit of this video, the inaccuracies in the player statements show that the players need education around painkillers even if it is just a small course. This way players can make informed choices. Being a pro athlete is a profession. I expect a bit of sports science to be taught and this to be included. Tramadol has it's place in the pain killer hierachy. In the NHS as a truama nurse a number of years ago we were administering it routinely alongside Paracetamol and as an option to codiene for pre and post procedure pain management, always acute pain NEVER for chronic pain. Back then tramadol was seen a a drug that straddled the classfications of "Non-opoid" like paracetatol and "Weak Opiod" like codeine. Tramadol became restricted in the NHS about 10 years ago to protect from unauthorised supply leading to deaths from abuse. To think that this hasnt happened elsewhere is suprising
Pharmacologist here, couldnt agree more. The problem here is that none of the drugs mentioned in this video on their own is "evil" or "bad". If used in the clinical setting with the right doses etc, they can be highly effective and will help patients. The key term here is misuse of these medications, if as someone said theres a push from clubs for players to return from injury more quickly, then of course there will be a incentive from players to reduce their pain and get on the field quicker. This will be exacerbated at the higher levels, where players are also on international duty then return for club games.
Well said - Tramadol is important for many patients and shouldn’t be generically categorised as “evil”. I love that you’re tackling challenging football issues that go unnoticed TIFO, but it’s worth adding a professional medical opinion in there for medical issues. Tramadol is safe when used appropriately and you should make people know there are legitimate uses for the general community.

My father was on it after a fall that left him with a spine injury. It was scary how easily he could get a prescription, and how nobody warned him of how addictive it can be. Atter months of physio and care, he is almost back to normal, and he doesn't need to take it anymore.

As a pharmacist, tramadol is very useful because it is lot less habit forming and lower side effects compared to oxycodone etc. So lot of doctors prescribe them for people for chronic join and muscle. Sad truth is that few drugs actually help with chronic pain and has relatively lower risk of addiction as Tramadol. Diclofenac and acetaminophen or ibuprofen helps on lower level of pain but in my professional exp, most say it barely helped with their medium to severe pain. I get these players saying it is addiction forming, but most medical professional would not agree that much because compared to other pain meds, it really is not, and would be more concerned about stomach issue.

This is a positive step, but I feel somehow more needs to be done to stop clubs pressuring players to return earlier from injuries too. I dont know how you do that, but it feels like a lot of the stories of painkiller overuse start with a player being pressured to rush back from a knee injury.
What's positive about it? There's alcohol and gambling addiction that exists too but these leagues and clubs want to profit from that. Why single out painkillers if they're not even PEDs?

Tramadol saved me after years of knee and back pain. Been on it for 2 years as could not handle cocodamol. Tramadol in the right dose has saved me.

Same here, I’ve been taking for 11 years after countless spinal fusions, if I didn’t have them to take I’d struggle to move. Now perhaps I’m lucky, I take the recommended daily dosage and not one more, my body immediately knows if I’ve had more (this has been a rare occurrence in which I did not keep track of how many I’d had) never though have I taken more than two more of the prescribed dosage. I keep my pain management on schedule and I do not suffer any ill effects, I had years of codeine which was unpleasant and did nothing for the pain. Tramadol has been great for me. Unfortunately though as it is a controlled substance it will affect people and lead them down a path of addiction, it’s the same with all prescription pain medication. For people to call it evil though doesn’t sit right with me, I’m not unsympathetic to people with addiction but it just happened to be tramadol that caused it for them, millions of other people struggle with other medications- you’re either lucky and you don’t have an addictive trait or you’re unlucky enough for you to suffer from it. This is a great story into football behind the scenes though. I will say to anyone who feels like they’re struggling go and seek help immediately. All the best.
I got tramadol after surgery a decade or so ago. I didn't need it but I did take it. I only had a short supply and I can get why folk would get addicted. I felt amazing on it. I describe it as "making my soul feel fuzzy". I'm very glad I only had a few days worth.
Some youths in Nigeria abuse it. It’s very addictive.
Cycling has been trying to deal with Tramadol for a while now. Pro riders have said it’s a danger to others as you are not safe in the bunch when you are on it. It was banned a couple of years ago and Nairo Quintana, 6th in the 2023 Tour de France and a regular podium finisher was banned for 6 months for test inf positive twice in the 2022 Tour.

There needs to be a more holistic approach to pain management. Giving players 14 months before banning a substance they rely on just means giving them a year to find a new substance to rely on.....
This is a good video but there were some points that were overlooked. Firstly, drugs are not just banned because one person doesn’t like them. A drug has to fill at least two of the WADA criteria before being banned: (1) Has the potential to enhance sporting performance. (2) Represents a health risk to the athlete. (3) Violates the spirit of sport. Secondly, it should be specified that WADA is the anti-doping agency across all sports so this isn’t an issue that is unique to football. Thirdly, a lot of research has been conducted into the effects of tramadol in sport. Dr Alexis Mauger and the team over at the University of Kent have done some excellent work on the topic. Finally, it is worth reiterating that it is a player’s responsibility as to what substances/methods they use. If a drugs test returns as positive, it is not the responsibility of the medics or the club - it is down to the player. They are the rules.

It’s amazing on the one hand a shame on the other how far athletes are willing to go to keep going and the cost it incurs. It does provide a lesson to us all on working hard to achieve your goals and realise your dreams and ambition though!
Couple of Kids who played for south Sydney Rugby League club OD d on it preseason a few years back. That effectively ended their careers before they had even started.
The painkiller issue is huge all around the world, not only in pro sports, but of course also in pro sports. Pro athletes have to play way too much and not being able to play puts their career at risk. Getting hooked on this stuff can ruin your life, so be really careful with what you take and how much/long you take it. Doctors are part of the problem, they prescribe with a loose hand and don't care enough about the potentially devastating lasting effects these things can have on people.

Drug misuse is an issue with many dimensions. It's easy to blame a particular substance, though that's not really a solution. Life can be tough for many, I'm not sure we have the empathy required as a species to resolve the issue, at least for now.
Two years ago I had a routine surgery (1h general anesthesia, they let me sleep at home the same evening). They prescribed me like 10 boxes of that stuff just in case. I took 1 pill because after an abdominal surgery it still hurts for a couple days, then I started feeling better and after having read the ingredients I threw the 10 boxes away. Nobody told me the potential effects, yet they gave me 10 boxes and let me take it unsupervised for a surgery that after 10 days of rest without painkillers didn't hurt anymore. Public hospital in France I was lucky and careful, others may not be :(

The video could do with a bit more nuance - having prescribed tramadol 100s of times it is usually prescribed with good intentions to treat acute pain. However both healthcare professionals and patients need to make sure it doesn’t ’fulfil’ other roles, where other approaches are safer are more effective. Same for naproxen and diclofenac - although it can cause stomach ulcers and bleeding it again can be helpful for pain, and the bleeding risk can be mitigated to an extent with PPIs. By overly demonising drugs I hope you don’t have to make a video in a few years of footballers with chronic PTSD due to pain post injury where a short course of analgesia may have been hugely beneficial. Nuance is all I’m asking for.

Thank you for saying this.. I have had multiple surgeries and tramadol is the only thing that helped me get sleep during the first few days with most post-op pain. It's a matter of following the guidelines of the doctor.. when the doctor told me to not take it more than 3-5 days.. I listened. Then there was one surgery (recently) where they only gave me NSAIDs and I had sleepless nights for about a week and delayed recovery and longer rehab. It's always easy to blame the substance than take responsibility for your addiction.
Tramadol was like the pill in the Bradley Cooper film Limitless for me. Took away any anxiety, helpes me focus on things and gave me energy for hours. 6 years later i was taking up to 20-30 pills a day just to feel 'normal'. I haven't touched it in 2 years its an evil drug and needs to ve erradicated from society.

Tramadol are weak af 50mg's are a joke A mate of mine had prescribed 200mg after knee reconstruction he'd have one and was away with the ferries. I took five on two occasions and l felt absolutely nothing...ripped off ⛳
I was on 6-8 per day for 2 years and I can say it was the worse time in my life. Once I was clean, it still took 6-9 months before I felt myself again. My brain was fuzzy, my mind was not my own. If anyone is struggling with this - please get help. It’s an evil drug.
That's a crazy high dose for a crazy amount of length. The drug isn't evil.. whoever put you on that dosage is.
Once in my life I took half a tablet of Tramadol from a mate who told me it would help me stay up late at work, it was euphoric in 10 mins I stopped feeling sleepy couldn't sit or calm down and felt inexplicable desire to move around for half a day, very strange mental state during that never without prescription and actual need again.

It is a bit hard to ban a painkiller that is prescribed after any big surgery. I dont think it is fair to make people go through pain just because the painkiller has the risk of being addictive.
I have some much experience in this and I can say it’s easy to become an addict because you think it’s not so dangerous but you become easily dependent on it
Tramadol is an opioid, it def has habit forming issues that runs wild here in the USA. Diclofenac and Naproxen are NSAID's. These agents first line, and are bare minumum to control pain, that actually work as anti-inflammatory (hence the name) to target route of problem not just cover the pain.

If there prescriptions have ended how are they getting it? Are they getting it from there clubs or on the black market?
With the rising number of games per season a player is expected to play, the injuries are increasing, either reduce the schedule or allow then to use the painkillers they need.
The players are monitored 24/7, with the best doctors money can guy, earning millions per year. They’ll be fine

Wow, I took this for pain for a lifelong medical condition a decade ago and it made me so sleepy, switched off and not myself that after a month I refused to keep taking it as it was sacring me. I didn't realise it was so prevelant in football, a horrible drug. I syill take Naproxen and Coedine when needed now, but I'm well aware of the risks so I take it sparingly.
Where are the players getting them? And why are they not being monitored? I really don't understand how professional sports have all different things for their players, but lack something like mental care for anxiety, depression, etc, or services for alcohol and other substance abuse centers. I'm pretty sure that the team doctors are affiliated with a local hospital or the clubs link up such services since their players are their precious commodities and investments....

Like any substance with the potential for addiction, if the dosage is managed and the benefits eg. Living life free of severe pain outway the side affects theres nothing wrong with it. I have been taking tramadol for years but i have stayed on a low dose and have made sure to monitor usage with my doctor. Never had a problem and i regularly take days off from taking it. I dont think the problem is an inate substance, the problem is that these footballers are being pandered to by their club doctors and clearly dont have sufficient education about the medication theyre taking.

Codeine is an opioid, it won't rot your stomach. It converts to morphine in your body.
Ridiculous ban, don’t know if it’ll help those who do consume it in a negative way either. And also unfair because many are probably using it without issues. No drug is ”evil”, sometimes people just don’t have the right understanding of how to use them, or they’re going through something that makes the more likely do develop an unhealthy relationship with the drug.
I love football but I am extremely concerned about the cost of my pleasure watching a game. So many player seemingly suffer in silence, afraid to seek help incase it impacts their career prospect. With so many young people suffering quite awful injuries at a young age (based on a recent BBC report about ACL injury in youth player's and other reports) I fear that there is a real problem around this topic. I hope any player watching this video follows the advice here about getting help. I don't know what alternatives are out there for long term pain but I am sure that talking to a professional who is not connected to your club (as they may be under pressure to get players match fit at any cost, although I hope I am wrong about that) might be a start. From this one fan. I appreciate you, I don't want my pleasure of watching your performance to cost you your physical and/or mental health. I am sorry if you have ever felt that we don't care, we do. I personally want players to have a great career and not suffer in later life as a consequence. Thank you for your dedication and passion. We love you all. Even when your rubbish. Wjen i was 14-17 i stole loads and loads of tramadol from my mum. It was horrific. Dont do it. I was addicted and i almost died from nit breathing.
I had to take Tramadol for 8 years after fracturing multiple vertebrae and I finally had a massive surgery to be able to stop. This medication should absolutely be banned, or only used for surgical recovery. Besides, these young men don’t need to deal with the complications of opiates, like long term constipation.
It is well known how ubiquitious drug use is in sport, everyone does it. Fact of the matter is that the stakes, for players, are so high that they are basically forced to abuse NSAIDs, other anti-inflammitorys and various painkillers. Apart for performance enhancing, drugs like Paracetamol can help shorten your recovery period so much that youd be in a disadvantage if you didnt use it. many of these drugs have negative long-term effects on the liver, heart, and kidneys. this is the sad reality of football
Im no football player, but i do take Tramadol regularly for a lifelong debilitating health condition. It is not the drug that is the problem, its the lack of education about responsible opioid use. Please keep in contact with a medical professional and learn about the risks. There is plenty of stories like this one. Almost any medication can be abused, but it can also improve quality of life with responsible use. IMO this drug is being stigmatised because a football player just started taking it without a prescription or medical advice.

Tramadol breaks natural sleep patterns. Withdrawal becomes difficult, and not being able to sleep makes every day life impossible, leading to reliance on the drug.
Is that what Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech were taking at Chelsea last season? It might be why Eden Hazard retired? What about Tyrone Mings?
tramadol can cause QT prolongation. When a person has a prolonged QT interval, they may experience serious heart problems . They may have an irregular heartbeat, which can become life threatening. Could be one of the reasons why we are seeing more heart problems in football nowadays
Of course medicines for moderate/severe pain can be extremely dangerous. However, we must not demonise these drugs and advertise them as a force for bad. This highlights to me the importance of safe prescribing.
If it's such an addictive drug why are they planning to "punish" players by giving them bans rather than actually trying to help them stop using it?
The last few words are enlightening. "Players have 14 months to ween themselves off....." Well done for allowing this and I hope the players can find some sort of therapies apart from another drug.
tramadol is especially difficult to get off bc it seems to also have some inhibitory reuptake effects on serotonin and norepinephrine. this means that as well as the usual delights of opioid withdrawal, you also cop the effects of SSRI/SNRI withdrawal.

I thought this would be an expose of the astounding increase in numbers of players being diagnosed with asthma and being prescribed Sulbutamol with the side effect of being able to cover greater distances during a football match but no!🙄
Of course, I hope this drug doesn't spread across football. I must say though; the governing bodies are not doing the most to protect football players from acute and chronic pain. These players are expected to play 80 games of football a season in the highest level. If they're gonna take a 'just say no' approach, then they need to do their best to prevent players from needing tramadol in the first place.
Why should we care, they literally make more money in ONE week than I make in ONE year working.

I have taken Tramadol because I was allergic to codeine. Worst drug I have taken, so I ended it before I had taken on the tablets and then smoked dope for the pain, 'best' drug I have taken.
I wonder how we went from singing from being high on drugs in cycling in the past anyway from being banned like being on steroids liability I guess.
Addictive & may contribute to neurological disorders later in life. No sports doctors should be prescribing these, or any kind of medication for sleep. Military & meditative techniques for getting sleep are easy to learn and effective.. Doctors tend to intervene when they should refer to others more expert in specific situations. Sleep is one of those situations.

Well, if it's so widely used I wouldn't say football actually fears this drug. And I hoped we'd actually get some info on the drug itself during the video. You hardly give us any information on how it works, or why it's used as opposed to other painkillers. Or why it's worse. Or whether any top PL teams or players are known to use it. Or what its possible replacements are once it's banned. I don't think this is a great way to tackle a drug that is a possible problem in football - by just quoting some negative experiences people have had with it.

Tramadol has only been classified as a controlled substance in the USA since 2014 But since the first day I started working at my hospital pharmacy in 2006, we have treated it as a controlled substance anyhow, because the nurses knew how good it was and were pocketing pills

I got prescribed that after surgery and when i stopped i honestly thought I was going to die I felt so bad, I've never touched painkillers since.

Is a nasty drug. Was prescribed it for back pain and ended up on maximum dosage for 3 years before weaning myself off. Think there is more of an awareness now by GPs about the risks thankfully.

As someone who was hooked on it, I can relate. The thing is a wonder drug, until it isn't. Edit: to be honest, though., I dunno how much of a positive impact banning it will have. It's addictive, but isn't inherently evil imo.

Wow. This popped up in my KZhead feed after I talked to someone in my job with severe spine issues. He's taking tramadol. And knows it might cause an addiction. But without it, he would be unable to work- the next strongest painkiller he could advance to is morphine, and he might need it. The solution in football has to be two-fold: reduce the number of games pros have to play to minimize the risk of injuries that later need strong painkillers, and of course, ban tramadol in anyone not undergoing a recovery period from an injury. If you're on the field, you have to be clean.
