Claude Debussy (1862-1918),
The Two Arabesques (Deux Arabesques) , L. 66 (1888 - 1891)
Nikolai Lugansky, 2019
From Moscow Philharmonic Society
[0:00] No. 1 in E major. Andantino con moto
[4:12] No. 2 in G major. Allegretto scherzando
“Debussy’s first compositions for solo piano to be issued in print were his Deux Arabesques. Already in his lifetime some 123,000 copies were sold of the first one, making it then, as now, one of his most popular pieces. It is funny to read that, even though they were published in 1891, as late as 1903 the newspaper Le Figaro published the first one as a musical supplement in which they called it a ‘new and entirely recent composition’ by a ‘young composer’ (Debussy was forty-one by then), stating how perplexing the music might be to even the most experienced pianist. They were no doubt trying to cash in on his success the previous year with his opera Pelléas et Mélisande, which had made him famous overnight.
Now nothing seems simpler than these totally charming pieces, with their flowing and decorative writing. Debussy once used the term ‘arabesque’ in describing a movement of a Bach violin concerto, speaking of the ‘principle of ornament, which is the basis of all forms of art‘“.

I feel like being transported to other realm while listening to this beauty.
Not only the tempo but unparalleled use of rubato, dynamic and allargando techniques produce a magical listening experience. Nikolai Lugansky's perfect technique and musical sensitivity enable heartfelt expression of great emotional impact. Decidedly, he has it all !
Bunin’s version is very nice as well
Debussy, for all his personal faults, aimed for transcendence in his music. Lugansky delivers that in spades, with both tenderness and joy. Thank you for sharing. So, so beautiful.
When I am listening to his wonderful performance, I feel a hundred years of loneliness
His beautiful performance is a great gift to Debussy lovers
To hear Claude Debussy performed.by Lugansky.is like to travel in time to another World full of Fantasy, Creatures of another dimensions, forest with lakes with multiple moons and infinity of stars.... Simple Magic. I really love Debussy. He's s Unique. And the performance of Lugansky , make me without words. Marvelous. Thanks you. 🌟🌞💫🌜🍀😺🌝🙊🤟🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤🌹💐🌳🍃🏔️🍄🌼
I have listened to this version so many times that when I listen to anyone else's version, I can't stand it. They either play it too fast and rigid, or too slow and drawn out. Nikolai's is a beautiful blend of pace and intensity in some moments, then fluidly slowing down and meandering in others. Just how I imagine Claude himself to have played it. It's absolutely delightful, and one of my all time favourite tracks.
It's just so dreamy when he meanders softly and slowly. Such is the magic of music like this, and an artist like that.
I do not agree, i think he doesn’t interpretate arabesque at his best…
Is no one gonna talk about the 2nd movement? It feels like he haven’t completed finding all the notes, and mistakes are everywhere
Here is the great secret to performing Debuaay:: follow Debussy's explicit directions. No more dramatic infusion, just perform as you are told in Debussy's rather neurotic instructions. And that is exactly what Lugansky does here. Bravo, Bravo, Bravo. When Lugansky does this, it speaks to my heart. Thank you for such a wonderful performance.
Ах... какая нежность звучания!
To be so expressive with these relatively simple piano pieces shows the great artistry of Nikolai Lugansky. Ah, Claude Debussy, you are greater than you seem!
This piece is definetely not easy
OMG! Who is that BARBARIAN coughing in the audience!
"barbarian" lollllll
😂😂😂
Right?! Omg that person should've go outside not until the piece is done, I'm so mad.
Another typical Russian coughing. Annoying
This is happening in Moscow. Russians are kinda barbaric on musical concerts . I am telling this as a Russian myself
This is the best version of Deux Arabesque I’ve found. His tempo is unparalleled
Absolutely. I have listened to his version so many times that when I listen to anyone else's version, I instantly can't stand it. They either play it too fast and rigid, or too slow and drawn out. Nikolai's is a beautiful blend of pace and intensity in some moments, then fluidly slowing and meandering in others. Just how I imagine Claude himself to have played it. It's absolutely delightful, and one of my all time favourite tracks.
Lugansky always has absolutely ideal tempo!)

Гениально , Николай👏👏👏
This pianist playing so well!!! 😍😍😍
I have fallen in love with his Etude in D sharp minor. It's clean.
I don’t think so
Listening to his incomparable performance , I can feel the aesthetics of Debussy From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
Don't forget that one of the great interpretations of Arabesque #1 is by Japanese musician and composer, Isao Tomita.
@@cbooth2004 Thankyou From A corner of shining an colorful au Tokyo 🍊🌾🌰🍁🍄🍄🌽🍇🍇🇯🇵
Браво Николай
Marvellous - thank you. Debussy would have liked it.
God of the music😳
😍😍😍 (The *cough*, *cough*, though 😂)
It's unbelievable isn't it? I can somewhat understand the coughing between the two movements (not ideal, but it is what it is). But there were literally people coughing ONE MINUTE into the performance! It's pathetic how an adult human can't hold in a cough for a few minutes to let the beauty of the piece flourish, but instead have to prioritise their own comfort levels
Финоминально 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍
Beuatifull !!!!!!!!
👏👏👏👏
Вы просто гений
Это так!
The death of live music 🗣️💨

Is it not too fast? Im just wondering, cause i play this piece much slower

In my opinion I think the second one is a bit too fast for my taste. just my opinion
