Road tripping across Iraq (proper) is a wild experience and I do not recommend any tourist to do it. It can get pretty intense! My buddy Alvaro (IG: @wanderreds) and I were stopped at over 30 police checkpoints - some easy, others hard - and by the end of the journey, my brain was fried … But we made it in one piece to the Southern city of Basra, and I documented the entire experience for you to see.

@@chanellatece8337 Bruh, he literally exaggerated alot in the video. There's no kidnapping and stuff. The checkpoints are for people's safety.
Your video quality has been skyrocketing and I am here for that
Oh look, a verified KZheadr
Hi KhAnubis luv ur videos
I love you Khanubis
The reason WHY there are so many checkpoints is to keep the people of Iraq safe and maintain security levels throughout the region. Don't be afraid of the men at the checkpoints, they may look aloof, intimidating, and unfriendly, but I promise they are there for safety and controlling who comes in/goes out.
Are you talking about those same iraqi security forces that fled when the soldiers of IS came to fight them ?
@@ownageparty not all .. Alot of Iraqi forces fought them, kicked doors in to find them and liberated cities. The Kurdish forces are still mainly to thank for eradicating isis though
@@ownageparty Let's not forget that ISIS used propaganda for intimidation which led to the fall of Mosul. Soldiers thought they would be beheaded.
How do you know any of that??? I'm Iranian with an Iraqi wife and in laws who still live in Iraq, you're just some Asian girl who's probably woke and wants to virtue signal. Stop while you're ahead please.
@@ownageparty are you stuck in 2014? They later came back and defeated them, and since then the Security points are there to prevent anything from this happening again

@@drewbinsky we felt your stress through every second of this video 😅 so intense!

the iraqi security forces can't even ensure their own safety, if you get kidnapped or robbed they won't be able to do anything.

Right, Saddam’s right hand man (Al-Duri) was a red head.

@@drewbinsky lol hello
Wow, the checkpoints looked really intense! I give you credit for keeping your composure through them as I would be sweating! I'm glad everything went well in the end! I really enjoyed this one!
It’s actually low risk there. I’m Iraqi and I’ve been on the road. The police are usually unprofessional and half the time they stop foreigners just for the sake of speaking to them or wasting time. However the region is extremely run down and the infrastructure is horrible. Thousands of illegally built structures and homes add to the already horrible pollution and garbage crisis. Desertification, lack of green space, decades of destruction, war and corruption means little progress to see. But you absolutely need a local guide and some connections if you want to make it through.
Well obviously if you're Iraqi they won't bother but if you're American they will bother you use your mind... Lmao

Thanks *Drew* for your efforts. We hope *iraq* and *people of iraq* bright future.. From Somalia
I also went to Iraq in 2019 for pilgrimage. As I am from India which is a pretty stable country it was surprising to see these crazy checkpoints everywhere. However they have to as if they won't, the terrorists will destroy everything. When we were in Hilla( a town) there was an incident where somebody took out a revolver and started shooting.though the police later caught him we all left the town that time.though the people are great and care for everyone. We are Indians though(literal canadians of asia, everyone loves us). labbaik ya hussain

You capture the culture, normal life and yes the history of the places you visit. I actually got a bit emotional seeing you go to Ur as someone that studied that site in Uni obsessively but could never get there. Please keep going to these places and showing the world them.

When I was in Iraq in 05 I had a dude that looked just like drew come up to our ECP and spoke fluent English. He was originally from Ireland and his dad had moved to Iraq to take a job in the petroleum industry. He dressed like a local and spoke fluent Arabic too. It was crazy. Super nice guy, sat and talked to him for a while. So we did see a handful of people that looked like Drew in the two years I spent there.

13:47 Basra is actually one of the most rundown cities in all of Iraq ! for being such a massive city and the economic capital of Iraq it's more than an embarrassment , Iraq is all rundown but Basra takes it to another level .
The corruption in Basrah is the highest level, it has all the money but no progress and no projects done, tribal stupidity and control with nothing but ignorance, the leaders their encourage all that so they can have the chance to grab more and no one notice the corruption and they can get away with it...the worse of the worst..

You’re putting too much emphasis on something that’s not there. Using the drama and suspense of being in a war torn country and hyping it up with a few scenes that in fact are irrelevant. What bothers me is that it had happened more often then once, and I actually like alot of your videos.
The video I've been waiting for. Iraq's sights may be amazing but the war zone reality still is a thing.

When I was in Iraq,I talked to one MP (Military Police) and he was pissed because he said they would train the Iraqi Police and they wouldn't learn anything, especially the IPs at checkpoints. And of the bases I've been to, Basra was the worst (as far as violence outside the gate). So I'm glad you're showing some of the good sites of Iraq.
Hope that stuff will get better for them
It is impossible to apply the style of the American police in Iraq we do not accept that someone comes to check our bodies Including critical body areas or put the person on the ground and put his foot on it
@@tomaszzalewski4541 me too
@@naseeralkhalidi5189 it's not even that. For example, the MP I talked to trained on making sure no one takes their rifle.
