  • I remember as a kid the last friday of every month my dad would buy me a matchbox car on his way home from work. I had to search his pockets to find it. I used to get so excited to see which one i had got. I had a large box i kept them all in and play for hours. Such simple times with a simple toy. Respect to that man.

  • Late 50's to early 60's I built up a Matchbox collection including the transporter. I remember when Hot Wheels came out and I didn't trust them. They did not have the detail of Matchbox. I joined the Navy and when I came home, my mother had tossed all my collectable toys, comic books, etc. I was devastated. I'm shocked at the value these items garner today.

    • When I was a kid in the early 70's I had boxes of thousands of comic books, Mad Magazine and Cracked magazines, that I had collected. We were poor, but not so poor that we couldn't spend a couple of dollars at the flea market on the weekends. My father was a mason, and when I wasn't in school he would take me to work to be a gopher for the crew. I didn't do much, mostly ran around exploring the jobsites. I guess it was just his way of giving me an allowance. But I would take most of that money and spend it on old editions of comics and magazines at flea markets and yard sales. They weren't really collectible at the time, so people were just happy to get rid of them. Sometimes they would just give me stacks for free cause of how excited I seemed to be. Lots of first and very early editions of some very popular comics. And like yourself, my mother, whom I will love eternally, threw them all away in a top to bottom house cleaning session, one summer that I was away at my uncles ranch.

I hadn't heard about him in years, so this is a real treat! I thought he left the hobby, but obviously not! Well done, Charlie!!!! You are a hero of the hobby!!!!

  • Thanks for sharing this story of this incredible Matchbox model collection! What I love about Matchbox vehicles until "Superfast" came along with their oversized crazy looking tires, was the high degree of detail that went into each diecast model. I also loved the later features that came along in the 1960s such as opening doors, engine hoods or the hydraulic piston travel such as on the Matchbox, yellow painted "Jumbo crane." Thankfully, I still have two Matchbox carrying cases totally filed with these miniature relics from my childhood past (wish I had hung onto the boxes!).

  • At 7:44 the green station wagon with the 2 dogs in the back was a big deal. If I recall correctly, it had a "tilt-to-steer" ability--if you gently pushed down on one side of the hood, the car would turn in that direction. Also if memory serves, that same car was available by mailing in box tops from breakfast cereal and they would mail the car to you. And everybody LOVED the 2 dogs in the back!

Many years later I discovered an original boxed ERF lorry in the bottom of our wrapping paper box! I got quite fond of the Models of Yesteryear range too - even the 1970s ones in 'funky' metallic colours.

  • The trademark Matchbox was originally registered by Emil and Richard Kohnstam in 1954. When Emil died Lesney were able to buy out Richard Kohnstam and the full rights to the name Matchbox and the sales rights and design registrations, the name MOKO was dropped by 1961. MOKO were the first two letters of the two names of the founder Moses Kohnstam. MOKO was a trademark of an old established firm of toy merchants, Information sourced from Matchbox Diecast Toys, The First Forty Years.

  • My favourite was a green mk4 Ford Cortina, I don't know what happened to it but I still remember spending hours with it as a kid in the 70's. Also remember staring at those Matchbox plastic display cases in my local toy store trying to pick the next car (we were not rich enough to have them all). That shop is a carpet shop now which is another said reflection on the changing world. Great to see this guys collection, I think men are lucky to keep part of their child's eye mind which inspires these enthusiasms.

  • So passionate was I about Matchbox models in the early sixties, I exchanged correspondence with the factory on a few occasions. Still have a score of my models from back then, and most are mint, as I didn't play with them. I eventually moved up to 1/18 scale diecast models in the early eighties. Thank you for this trip down Memory Lane.

  • Fantastic! That brings back so many memories of cars that I own/owned/wanted to own. I remember keeping mine in boxes, until I finally got one of the Collector Cases of the times, then threw them away. 😞 However, I still have the cars (only around 90 of them though). My favourite memory is from 1966. When my younger brother was born, I remember Dad handing me a Dodge Wreck Truck (BP tow truck) when we were leaving the hospital and telling me that it was from my baby brother. Thanks for sharing this, best wishes from New Zealand.

I had a small collection (50 or so) 1:18 scale cars and they just took too much space, so I have been converting them into the 1:43 scale models, and again just the ones I can’t live without. So far the Mrs is not complaining about dusting them…which I never liked her doing on the bigger cars. Thanks for posting this video.
